In order to support near-term applications of quantum computing, a new compute paradigm has emerged--the quantum-classical cloud--in which quantum computers (QPUs) work in tandem with classical computers (CPUs) via a shared cloud infrastructure. In this work, we enumerate the architectural requirements of a quantum-classical cloud platform, and present a framework for benchmarking its runtime performance. In addition, we walk through two platform-level enhancements, parametric compilation and active qubit reset, that specifically optimize a quantum-classical architecture to support variational hybrid algorithms (VHAs), the most promising applications of near-term quantum hardware. Finally, we show that integrating these two features into the Rigetti Quantum Cloud Services (QCS) platform results in considerable improvements to the latencies that govern algorithm runtime.
Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) are the quantum analog of classical neural networks (NNs). A VQA consists of a parameterized quantum circuit (PQC) which is composed of multiple layers of ansatzes (simpler PQCs, which are an analogy of NN layers) that differ only in selections of parameters. Previous work has identified the alternating layered ansatz as potentially a new standard ansatz in near-term quantum computing. Indeed, shallow alternating layered VQAs are easy to implement and have been shown to be both trainable and expressive. In this work, we introduce a training algorithm with …
We propose an orbital optimized method for unitary coupled cluster theory (OO-UCC) within the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) framework for quantum computers. OO-UCC variationally determines the coupled cluster amplitudes and also molecular orbital coefficients. Owing to its fully variational nature, first-order properties are readily available. This feature allows the optimization of molecular structures in VQE without solving any additional equations. Furthermore, the method requires smaller active space and shallower quantum circuit than UCC to achieve the same accuracy. We present nu…
Quantum processing units boost entanglement at the level of hardware and enable physical simulations of highly correlated electron states in molecules and intermolecular chemical bonds. The variational quantum eigensolver provides a hardware-efficient toolbox for ground state simulation; however, with limitations in precision. Even in the absence of noise, the algorithm may result into a biased energy estimation, particularly with some shallower ansatz types. Noise additionally degrades entanglement and hinders the ground state energy estimation (especially if the noise is not fully characteri…
Elucidating photochemical reactions is vital to understand various biochemical phenomena and develop functional materials such as artificial photosynthesis and organic solar cells, albeit its notorious difficulty by both experiments and theories. The best theoretical way so far to analyze photochemical reactions at the level of ab initio electronic structure is the state-averaged multi-configurational self-consistent field (SA-MCSCF) method. However, the exponential computational cost of classical computers with the increasing number of molecular orbitals hinders applications of SA-MCSCF for l…
The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm, designed to calculate the energy of molecular ground states on near-term quantum computers, requires specification of symmetries that describe the system, e.g. spin state and number of electrons. This opens the possibility of using VQE to obtain excited states as the lowest energy solutions of a given set of symmetries. In this paper, the performances of various unitary coupled cluster (UCC) ansätze applied to VQE calculations on excited states are investigated, using quantum circuits designed to represent single reference and multireference…
Currently, quantum hardware is restrained by noises and qubit numbers. Thus, a quantum virtual machine that simulates operations of a quantum computer on classical computers is a vital tool for developing and testing quantum algorithms before deploying them on real quantum computers. Various variational quantum algorithms have been proposed and tested on quantum virtual machines to surpass the limitations of quantum hardware. Our goal is to exploit further the variational quantum algorithms towards practical applications of quantum machine learning using state-of-the-art quantum computers. Thi…
Classical algorithms for predicting the equilibrium geometry of strongly correlated molecules require expensive wave function methods that become impractical already for few-atom systems. In this work, we introduce a variational quantum algorithm for finding the most stable structure of a molecule by explicitly considering the parametric dependence of the electronic Hamiltonian on the nuclear coordinates. The equilibrium geometry of the molecule is obtained by minimizing a more general cost function that depends on both the quantum circuit and the Hamiltonian parameters, which are simultaneous…
In this work, we present a stochastic variational calculation (SVM) of energies and wave functions of few particle systems coupled to quantum fields in cavity QED. The light-matter coupled system is described by the Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonian. The spatial wave function and the photon spaces are optimized by a random selection process. Examples for a two-dimensional trion and confined electrons as well as for the He atom and the Hydrogen molecule are presented showing that the light-matter coupling drastically changes the electronic states.
We study theoretically the effects of dissipation on the performances of a variational quantum algorithm used to approximately solve a combinatorial optimization problem, the Maximum Independent Set, on a platform of neutral atoms. We take a realistic model of dissipation with spontaneous emission, and show numerically that the detrimental effects of these incoherent processes are spontaneously attenuated by the variational nature of the procedure. We furthermore implement an alternative optimization scheme recently proposed, where one uses the expected shortfall of the mean energy as the obje…

Utilizing counterdiabatic (CD) driving - aiming at suppression of diabatic transition - in digitized adiabatic evolution have garnered immense interest in quantum protocols and algorithms. However, improving the approximate CD terms with a nested commutator ansatz is a challenging task. In this work, we propose a technique of finding optimal coefficients of the CD terms using a variational quantum circuit. By classical optimizations routines, the parameters of this circuit are optimized to provide the coefficients corresponding to the CD terms. Then their improved performance is exemplified in…
The Fermi-Hubbard model is a plausible target to be solved by a quantum computer using the variational quantum eigensolver algorithm. However, problem sizes beyond the reach of classical exact diagonalisation are also beyond the reach of current quantum computing hardware. Here we use a simple method which compresses the first nontrivial subcase of the Hubbard model -- with one spin-up and one spin-down fermion -- enabling larger instances to be addressed using current quantum computing hardware. We implement this method on a superconducting quantum hardware platform for the case of the $2 \ti…

We propose a hybrid quantum-classical approach to model continuous classical probability distributions using a variational quantum circuit. The architecture of the variational circuit consists of two parts: a quantum circuit employed to encode a classical random variable into a quantum state, called the quantum encoder, and a variational circuit whose parameters are optimized to mimic a target probability distribution. Samples are generated by measuring the expectation values of a set of operators chosen at the beginning of the calculation. Our quantum generator can be complemented with a clas…
Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) are promising methods to demonstrate quantum advantage on near-term devices as the required resources are divided between a quantum simulator and a classical optimizer. As such, designing a VQA which is resource-efficient and robust against noise is a key factor to achieve potential advantage with the existing noisy quantum simulators. It turns out that a fixed VQA circuit design, such as the widely-used hardware efficient ansatz, is not necessarily robust against imperfections. In this work, we propose a genome-length-adjustable evolutionary algorithm to …
We present a classically solvable model that leads to optimized low-depth quantum circuits leveraging separable pair approximations. The obtained circuits are well suited as a baseline circuit for emerging quantum hardware and can, in the long term, provide significantly improved initial states for quantum algorithms. The associated wavefunctions can be represented with linear memory requirement which allows classical optimization of the circuits and naturally defines a minimum benchmark for quantum algorithms. In this work, we employ directly determined pair-natural orbitals within a basis-se…

Inference is the task of drawing conclusions about unobserved variables given observations of related variables. Applications range from identifying diseases from symptoms to classifying economic regimes from price movements. Unfortunately, performing exact inference is intractable in general. One alternative is variational inference, where a candidate probability distribution is optimized to approximate the posterior distribution over unobserved variables. For good approximations, a flexible and highly expressive candidate distribution is desirable. In this work, we use quantum Born machines …
The annealing schedule is optimized for a parameter in the Lechner-Hauke-Zoller (LHZ) scheme for quantum annealing designed for the all-to-all-interacting Ising model representing generic combinatorial optimization problems. We adapt the variational approach proposed by Matsuura et al. (arXiv:2003.09913) to the annealing schedule of a term representing a constraint for variables intrinsic to the LHZ scheme with the annealing schedule of other terms kept intact. Numerical results for a simple ferromagnetic model and the spin-glass problem show that nonmonotonic annealing schedules optimize the …
We present a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm that simulates electronic structures of periodic systems such as ground states and quasiparticle band structures. By extending the unitary coupled cluster (UCC) theory to describe crystals in arbitrary dimensions, for a hydrogen chain, we numerically demonstrate that the UCC ansatz implemented on a quantum circuit can be successfully optimized with a small deviation from the exact diagonalization over the entire range of the potential energy curves. Furthermore, by using the quantum subspace expansion method, in which we truncate the Hilbert spac…
