The asymmetry in the neutrino mean free path for the absorption reaction $ν+ n \rightarrow e^{-} + p$, is evaluated within hot neutron matter under a strong magnetic field. We consider densities in the range $0.05 \leq ρ\leq 0.4$ fm$^{-3}$, several temperatures up to 30 MeV and magnetic field strengths from $B=0$ up to $B=10^{18}$~G. Polarized neutron matter is described within the non--relativistic Hartree--Fock model using the LNS Skyrme interaction. The neutrino mean free path has a weak dependence with the temperature and in the strong magnetic field region, it decreases for growing values of it. This contrast with the scattering reaction $ν+ n \rightarrow ν' + n'$, where the average mean free path is almost independent of the magnetic field and has a strong dependence with the temperature. We have evaluated the asymmetry from both the absorption and scattering reactions. Our results shows that the total asymmetry depends on the magnetic field intensity, the density and the temperature. For a density of $0.16$ fm$^{-3}$ and for a magnetic field strength of B=$10^{17}$~G, the asymmetry in the mean free path is found to be, $\sim 9\%$ and $\sim 3.4\%$ for temperatures of T$=15$ and $30$ MeV, respectively. While the same set of asymmetries for B=$10^{18}$~G, is $\sim 58\%$ and $\sim 48\%$.
The effects of a strong magnetic field in the dynamical response of a pure neutron system to a weak neutrino probe are studied within the framework of the Landau Fermi Liquid Theory in the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock approximation. We use Skyrme forces to parametrize the partially magnetized nuclear interacting plasma and describe its collective modes. We study the vector and vector-axial matter response functions and the neutrino mean free path in this two-component fermion system with net spin polarization and density dependent in-medium correlations. We find a decrease in the neutrino opa…
The formalism of linear response theory for a Skyrme functional including spin-orbit and tensor terms is generalized to the case of infinite nuclear matter with arbitrary isospin asymmetry. Response functions are obtained by solving an algebraic system of equations, which is explicitly given. Spin-isospin strength functions are analyzed varying the conditions of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry and temperature. The presence of instabilities, including the spinodal one, is studied by means of the static susceptibility.
The properties of spin polarized neutron matter are studied both at zero and finite temperature using Skyrme-type interactions. It is shown that the critical density at which ferromagnetism takes place decreases with temperature. This unexpected behaviour is associated to an anomalous behaviour of the entropy which becomes larger for the polarized phase than for the unpolarized one above a certain critical density. This fact is a consequence of the dependence of the entropy on the effective mass of the neutrons with different third spin component and a new constraint on the parameters of the e…
Generalized symmetry energy coefficients of asymmetric nuclear matter are obtained as screening functions. The dependence of the isospin symmetry energy coefficient on the neutron proton (n-p) asymmetry may be determined unless by a constant (exponent) $Z$ which depend on microscopic properties. The dependence of the generalized symmetry energy coefficients with Skyrme forces on the n-p asymmetry and on the density, only from .5 up to 1.5 $ρ_0$, are investigated in the isospin and scalar channels. The use of Skyrme-type effective forces allows us to obtain analytical expressions for these para…
We present the formalism of linear response theory both at zero and finite temperature in the case of asymmetric nuclear matter excited by an isospin flip probe. The particle-hole interaction is derived from a general Skyrme functional that includes spin-orbit and tensor terms. Response functions are obtained by solving a closed algebraic system of equations. Spin strength functions are analyzed for typical values of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry and temperature.
The possibility of appearance of spin polarized states in symmetric and strongly asymmetric nuclear matter is analyzed within the framework of a Fermi liquid theory with the Skyrme effective interaction. The zero temperature dependence of the neutron and proton spin polarization parameters as functions of density is found for SkM$^*$, SGII (symmetric case) and SLy4, SLy5 (strongly asymmetric case) effective forces. By comparing free energy densities, it is shown that in symmetric nuclear matter ferromagnetic spin state (parallel orientation of neutron and proton spins) is more preferable than …
We study the effect of the splitting of neutron and proton effective masses with isospin asymmetry on the properties of the Skyrme energy density functional. We discuss the ability of the latter to predict observable of infinite matter and finite nuclei, paying particular attention to controlling the agreement with ab-initio predictions of the spin-isospin content of the nuclear equation of state, as well as diagnosing the onset of finite size instabilities, which we find to be of critical importance. We show that these various constraints cannot be simultaneously fulfilled by the standard Sky…
We present the explicit form of the next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) Skyrme interaction in momentum space by including the fourth-order gradient potentials to the standard Skyrme interaction. With the N$^2$LO Skyrme interaction, we evaluate the second-order corrections to the nuclear bulk quantities of nuclear matter: equation of state (EoS) of isospin symmetric and pure neutron matter, density-dependent in-medium effective nucleon mass, isospin-asymmetry energy, pressure and incompressibility. These second-order contributions are ultraviolet (UV) divergent due to the zero range charact…
We present an analytic, recoil-order calculation of the proton asymmetry from polarized neutron $β$-decay. The differential decay rate in terms of electron energy and proton direction follows, parametrized in terms of the most general Lorentz-invariant hadron current coupled to a left-handed lepton current. Implications for experimental efforts to measure recoil-order currents are discussed.
We calculate the energy dependence of the asymmetry in the cross sections for circularly polarized photons on an unpolarized deuteron target in $d\vecγ \to np$ in pionless effective field theory. By matching the parity-violating low-energy constants to different sets of corresponding model parameters we obtain estimates for the asymmetry. In addition we calculate two possible figures of merit for the asymmetry in order to assess the preferred photon energy at which to perform a possible future experiment at a high-intensity photon source.
Neutrino mean free paths in magnetized neutron matter are calculated using the Hartree-Fock approximation with effective Skyrme and Gogny forces in the framework of the Landau Fermi Liquid Theory. It is shown that describing nuclear interaction with Skyrme forces and for magnetic field strengths $log_{10} B(G) \gtrsim 17$, the neutrino mean free paths stay almost unchanged at intermediate densities but they largely increase at high densities when they are compared to the field-free case results. However the description with Gogny forces differs from the previous and mean free paths stay almons…
Based on the phenomenological Skyrme interaction various density-dependent nuclear matter quantities are calculated up to second order in many-body perturbation theory. The spin-orbit term as well as two tensor terms contribute at second order to the energy per particle. The simultaneous calculation of the isotropic Fermi-liquid parameters provides a rigorous check through the validity of the Landau relations. It is found that published results for these second order contributions are incorrect in most cases. In particular, interference terms between $s$-wave and $p$-wave components of the int…
Response functions of infinite nuclear matter with arbitrary isospin asymmetry are studied in the framework of the random phase approximation. The residual interaction is derived from a general nuclear Skyrme energy density functional. Besides the usual central, spin-orbit and tensor terms it could also include other components as new density-dependent terms or three-body terms. Algebraic expressions for the response functions are obtained from the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the particle-hole propagator. Applications to symmetric nuclear matter, pure neutron matter and asymmetric nuclear matt…
We investigate the isoscalar and isovector E1 response of neutron-rich nuclei, within a semi-classical transport model employing effective interactions for the nuclear mean-field. In particular, we adopt the recently introduced SAMi-J Skyrme interactions, whose parameters are specifically tuned to improve the description of spin-isospin properties of nuclei. Our analysis evidences a relevant degree of isoscalar/isovector mixing of the collective excitations developing in neutron-rich systems. Focusing on the low-lying strength emerging in the isovector response, we show that this energy region…
The isoscalar and isovector particle densities and the surface tension coefficients at the average binding energy are used to derive analytical expressions of the neutron skin thickness and the isovector stiffness of sharp edged proton-neutron asymmetric nuclei. For most Skyrme forces these quantities are significantly larger than the well known ones. Using the analytical isovector surface energy constants in the framework of the hydrodynamical and the Fermi-liquid droplet models the mean energies and the sum rules of the isovector giant dipole resonances are in fair agreement with the experim…
Spin polarized states in nuclear matter with an effective nucleon-nucleon interaction are studied for a wide range of isospin asymmetries and densities. Based on a Fermi liquid theory, it is shown that there are a few possible scenarios of spin ordered phase transitions: (a) nuclear matter undergoes at some critical density a phase transition to a spin polarized state with the oppositely directed spins of neutrons and protons (Skyrme SLy4 and Gogny D1S interactions); (b) at some critical density, a spin polarized state with the like-directed neutron and proton spins appears (Skyrme SkI5 intera…
Recent measurement of the parity-violating (PV) asymmetry in the elastic electron scattering on $^{27}$Al target evokes the interest in the distribution of the neutron in the nucleus. In this work, we calculate the neutron skin thickness ($R_{np}$) of $^{27}$Al with nonrelativistic nuclear structure models. We focus on the role of the effective mass, symmetry energy and pairing force. Models are selected to have effective masses in the range $(0.58-1.05)M$ where $M$ is the nucleon mass in free space, and stiffness of the symmetry energy is varied by choosing the slope of the symmetry energy in…
Nuclear matter equations of state based on Skyrme, Myers-Swiatecki and Tondeur interactions are written as polynomials of the cubic root of density, with coefficients that are functions of the relative neutron excess $δ$. In the extrapolation toward states far away from the standard one, it is shown that the asymmetry dependence of the critical point ($ρ_c, δ_c$) depends on the model used. However, when the equations of state are fitted to the same standard state, the value of $δ_c$ is almost the same in Skyrme and in Myers-Swiatecki interactions, while is much lower in Tondeur interaction. Fu…
The nuclear response to longitudinally polarized electrons, detected in coincidence with out-of-plane high-energy protons, is discussed in a simple model where the ejectile wave function is approximated as a plane wave with a complex wave vector. This choice is equivalent to solve the problem of Final-State Interactions (FSI) in homogeneous nuclear matter, as the residual nucleus can be described to a first approximation when dealing with very fast emitted protons. The main advantage of the present method is that in the framework of the Distorted-Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA) it allows for…
Symmetry energy terms from macroscopic mass formulae are investigated as generalized polarizabilities of nuclear matter. Besides the neutron-proton (n-p) symmetry energy the spin dependent symmetry energies and a scalar one are also defined. They depend on the nuclear densities ($ρ$), neutron-proton asymmetry ($b$), temperature ($T$) and exchanged energy and momentum ($q$). Based on a standard expression for the generalized polarizabilities, a differential equation is proposed to constrain the dependence of the symmetry energy on the n-p asymmetry and on the density. Some solutions are discuss…
We calculate P-odd difference of the total cross-sections of the deuteron disintegration by left and right polarized photons. The relative magnitude of this difference in the threshold region is about 10^{-7}. Its experimental measurement would give valuable information on the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction at short distances.
In the framework of a Fermi liquid theory it is considered the possibility of appearance of spin polarized states in strongly asymmetric nuclear matter with Skyrme effective interaction. The zero temperature dependence of neutron and proton spin polarization parameters as functions of density is found for SLy4, SLy5 effective forces. It is shown that at some critical density it will be formed the state with the oppositely directed spins of neutrons and protons, while the state with the same direction of spins does not appear. In comparison with neutron matter, even small admixture of protons s…
Polarized flavor asymmetry Delta u-bar/Delta d-bar is investigated in a meson-cloud model. A polarized nucleon splits into a rho meson and a baryon, then the polarized rho meson interacts with the virtual photon. Because of the difference between the longitudinally polarized distributions Delta u-bar and Delta d-bar in rho, the polarized flavor asymmetry is produced in the nucleon. In addition, we show that the g_2 part of rho contributes to the asymmetry especially at medium x with small Q^2.
We discuss the possibility of finding polarized antiquark flavor asymmetry in Drell-Yan processes. We find that the difference between polarized proton-proton and proton-deuteron Drell-Yan cross sections should provide valuable information on the polarized flavor asymmetry. Numerical results indicate that the asymmetry effects are conspicuous especially in the large-x_F region. Our analysis is important for the transversity distributions because the flavor asymmetry cannot be found by inclusive lepton scattering and W-production processes.
Angular distributions for production of the $Θ^+$ pentaquark are calculated for the collisions of polarized protons with polarized target protons. We compare calculations based on different assumptions concerning spin and parity ($J=1/2^\pm,3/2^\pm$) of the $Θ^+$ state. For a wide class of interactions the spin correlation parameters describing the asymmetric angular distributions are calculated up to 250 MeV above production threshold. The deviations from the near threshold behavior are investigated.
We discuss the Drell-Yan proton-deuteron (p-d) asymmetry R_{pd}, which is defined by the proton-proton and proton-deuteron cross-section ratio Δ_{(T)}σ^{pd}/2Δ_{(T)}σ^{pp}, and its relation to the polarized light-antiquark flavor asymmetry. Using a formalism of the polarized {\it pd} Drell-Yan process, we show that the R_{pd} especially in the large-x_F region is very useful for finding the flavor asymmetry in the longitudinally-polarized and transversity distributions. Our results are particularly important to study the flavor asymmetry in the transversity distributions because they cannot be…
We discuss the relation between the ratio of the proton-deuteron (pd) Drell-Yan cross section to the proton-proton (pp) one Δ_{(T)} σ_{pd}/2 Δ_{(T)} σ_{pp} and the flavor asymmetry in polarized light-antiquark distributions. Using a recent formalism of the polarized pd Drell-Yan process, we show that the difference between the pp and pd cross sections is valuable for finding not only the flavor asymmetry in longitudinally polarized antiquark distributions but also the one in transversity distributions. It is especially important that we point out the possibility of measuring the flavor asymmet…
We study the $\sin2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in the $πN$ Drell-Yan process, when the nucleon is longitudinally polarized. The asymmetry is contributed by the combination of the Boer-Mulders function and the longitudinal transversity distribution function. We consider the Drell-Yan processes by $π^\pm$ beams colliding on the proton and deuteron targets, respectively. We calculate the $\sin2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries in these processes using the Boer-Mulders function and the longitudinal transversity from spectator models. We show that the study on single polarized $πN$ Drell-Yan processes can not on…
The PHENIX experiment at BNL-RHIC recently reported the single transverse spin asymmetry $A_N$ for forward neutrons measured in polarized proton-nucleus collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200\,$GeV; $A_N$ in proton-aluminum and proton-gold collisions are -0.015 and 0.18, respectively, which are clearly different from $A_N=-0.08$ in proton-proton collisions. In this paper, we propose large $A_N$ for forward neutrons in ultraperipheral polarized proton-nucleus collisions as an explanation of the PHENIX measurements. The proposed model is demonstrated using two Monte Carlo simulations organized as fo…
We discuss the possible factorization of the tensor asymmetry $A^T_d$ measured for polarized deuteron targets within a relativistic framework. We define a reduced asymmetry and find that factorization holds only in plane wave impulse approximation and if p-waves are neglected. Our numerical results show a strong factorization breaking once final state interactions are included. We also compare the d-wave content of the wave functions with the size of the factored, reduced asymmetry and find that there is no systematic relationship of this quantity to the d-wave probability of the various wave …
Properties of spin polarized isospin asymmetric nuclear matter are studied within the framework of the Brueckner--Hartree--Fock formalism. The single-particle potentials of neutrons and protons with spin up and down are determined for several values of the neutron and proton spin polarizations and the asymmetry parameter. It is found an almost linear and symmetric variation of the single-particle potentials as increasing these parameters. An analytic parametrization of the total energy per particle as a function of the asymmetry and spin polarizations is constructed. This parametrization is em…
New ab initio constrained extended Skyrme equations of state for simulations of neutron stars, supernovae and binary mergers: II. Thermal response in the suprasaturation density domain
We construct three new Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) mass models, labeled HFB-19, HFB-20, and HFB-21, with unconventional Skyrme forces containing $t_4$ and $t_5$ terms, i.e., density-dependent generalizations of the usual $t_1$ and $t_2$ terms, respectively. The new forces underlying these models are fitted respectively to three different realistic equations of state of neutron matter for which the density dependence of the symmetry energy ranges from the very soft to the very stiff, reflecting thereby our present lack of complete knowledge of the high-density behavior of nuclear matter. All …
We report recent theoretical progress on a polarization asymmetry in the proton-deuteron Drell-Yan process with a polarized-deuteron target and the tensor-polarized structure function $b_1$. Experimental measurements are possible at JLab for $b_1$ and at Fermilab for the Drell-Yan process. First, we show a theoretical estimate for the proton-deuteron Drell-Yan asymmetry in the Fermilab-E1039 experiment. We evolved tensor-polarized parton distribution functions, which explain existing HERMES $b_1$ data, at $Q^2=2.5$ GeV$^2$ to the $Q^2$ range of the Fermilab Drell-Yan measurements. Then, we pre…
There are four new structure functions for the spin-1 deuteron in comparison with the ones for the spin-1/2 proton, and they are called $b_1$, $b_2$, $b_3$, and $b_4$. The twist-2 structure functions $b_1$ and $b_2$ are expressed by tensor-polarized parton distribution functions in the deuteron. HERMES measurements of $b_1$ are much different from the prediction of the standard deuteron model with D-state admixture. It indicates that the structure functions $b_1$ and $b_2$ probe an interesting new aspect in the deuteron. There is an approved experiment at JLab to measure $b_1$ and it is expect…
The role of the nucleon resonances ($N^*$) in $ω$ photoproduction is investigated by using the resonance parameters predicted by Capstick and Roberts. The contributions from the nucleon resonances are found to be significant in various spin asymmetries. In particular, we found that a crucial test of our predictions can be made by measuring the parity asymmetry and beam-target double asymmetry at forward scattering angles.
The measurement was performed with circularly polarized photons incident on longitudinally polarized target in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The helicity asymmetry E for $\vecγ\vec{p}\toπ^0p$ was determined at CM energies between 1450 MeV and 2050 MeV and compared to the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial-wave analyses.
We show that the polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process is ideal to probe the pretzelosity distribution ($h_{1T}^\perp$), which is one of the new transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions of the nucleon. We present predictions of the $\cos(2ϕ+ ϕ_a - ϕ_b)$ asymmetry in the transversely polarized proton-antiproton Drell-Yan process at PAX kinematics and find that the results are significantly larger compared with those of the $\sin(3ϕ_h - ϕ_S)$ asymmetry in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process at HERMES, COMPASS, and JLab kinematics. We conclude that the $\cos(2ϕ+…
We discuss polarized parton distributions and their effects on spin asymmetries at RHIC. In particular, transversity distributions and transverse spin asymmetry are studied. First, we show the $Q^2$ evolution difference between a transversity distribution and a corresponding longitudinally polarized distribution. The difference could be an important test of perturbative QCD in high-energy spin physics. Then, the transverse spin asymmetry $A_{TT}$ is calculated with possible transversity distributions. Next, we study antiquark flavor asymmetry $Δ_{_T} \bar u/ Δ_{_T} \bar d$ in the transversity …
Tensor structure of the deuteron can be studied by deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan process to understand it in terms of quark and gluon degrees of freedom. It probes interesting features in the deuteron including a D-wave contribution. In the charged-lepton DIS, twist-two structure functions $b_1$ and $b_2$ are expressed by tensor-polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs). We note that the HERMES experimental measurement of $b_1$ seems to be much different from a conventional theoretical prediction. This puzzling situation should be significantly improved in the near future by an …
Core collapse supernovae are dominated by weakly interacting neutrinos. This provides a unique opportunity for macroscopic parity violation. We speculate that parity violation in a strong magnetic field can lead to an asymmetry in the explosion and a recoil of the newly formed neutron star. We estimate the asymmetry from neutrino-polarized-neutron elastic scattering, polarized electron capture and neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering in a (partially) polarized electron gas.
Tensor-polarized parton distribution functions are new quantities in spin-one hadrons such as the deuteron, and they could probe new quark-gluon dynamics in hadron and nuclear physics. In charged-lepton deep inelastic scattering (DIS), they are studied by the twist-two structure functions $b_1$ and $b_2$. The HERMES collaboration found unexpectedly large $b_1$ values than a naive theoretical expectation based on the standard deuteron model. The situation should be significantly improved in the near future by an approved experiment to measure $b_1$ at JLab (Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator…
