We study transfer of single photon in an one-dimensional finite Glauber-Fock cavity array whose coupling strengths satisfy a square root law. The evolved state in the array can be mapped to an upper truncated coherent state if the cavities are resonant. Appropriate choices of resonance frequencies provide perfect transfer of a photon between any two cavities in the array. Perfect transfer of the photon allows perfect quantum state transfer between the cavities. Our findings may help in realizing quantum communication and information processing in photonic lattices.
Glauber-Fock lattices refer to a special class of semi-infinite tight-binding lattices with inhomogeneous hopping rates which are found in certain simple solid-state, quantum optics and quantum field theoretical models. Here it is shown that dynamic localization, i.e. suppression of quantum diffusion and periodic quantum self-imaging by an external sinusoidal force [D.H. Dunlap and V.M. Kenkre, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 34}, 3625 (1986)], can be exactly realized in Glauber-Fock lattices, in spite of inhomogeneity of hopping rates and lattice truncation.
The dynamics of Glauber-Fock lattice of size N is given through exact diagonalization of the corresponding Hamiltonian; the spectra $\{λ_{k}\}$ is given as the roots of the $N$-th Hermite polynomial, $H_{N}(λ_k/\sqrt{2})=0$, and the eigenstates are given in terms of Hermite polynomials evaluated at these roots. The exact dynamics is used to study coherent phenomena in discrete lattices. Due to the symmetry and spacing of the eigenvalues $\{λ_{k}\}$, oscillatory behavior with highly localized spectra, that is, near complete revivals of the photon number and partial recovery of the initial state…
We demonstrate that single-photon as well as biphoton revivals are possible in a new class of dynamic optical systems-the so-called Glauber-Fock oscillator lattices. In these arrays, both Bloch-like oscillations and dynamic delocalization can occur which can be described in closed form. The bunching and anti-bunching response of path-entangled photons can be pre-engineered in such coupled optical arrangements and the possibility of emulating Fermionic behavior in this family of lattices is also considered. We elucidate these effects via pertinent examples and we discuss the prospect of experim…
We consider a Glauber-Fock oscillator and show that diffraction can be managed. We show how to design arrays of waveguides where light beams experience zero diffraction. We find an exact analytical family of nondiffracting localized solution. We predict discrete parametric oscillation in the Glauber-Fock oscillator.
Coherent states and their generalisations, displaced Fock states, are of fundamental importance to quantum optics. Here we present a direct observation of a classical analogue for the emergence of these states from the eigenstates of the harmonic oscillator. To this end, the light propagation in a Glauber-Fock waveguide lattice serves as equivalent for the displacement of Fock states in phase space. Theoretical calculations and analogue classical experiments show that the square-root distribution of the coupling parameter in such lattices supports a new family of intriguing quantum correlation…
A scheme for preparation of coherent superposition of Fock states of electromagnetic field is constructed. The superposition state is created inside the cavity via a strong interaction of a four-level atom with quantum field of the cavity and classic laser fields. We demonstrate the possibility to create desired arbitrary superposition of the cavity Fock states just by changing the relative delay of the fields. Then, as another application of our model, we study a means of creating entanglement of neutral four-level atoms using different sequences of interactions with the cavity and laser fiel…
In this article we discuss the realization of atomic GHZ states involving three-level atoms in a cascade and in a lambda configuration and we show explicitly how to use this state to perform the GHZ test in which it is possible to decide between local realism theories and quantum mechanics. The experimental realizations proposed makes use the interaction of Rydberg atoms with a cavity prepared in a state which is a superposition of zero and one Fock states.
We propose a scheme to generate arbitrary Fock states |N> in a cavity QED using N resonant Rydberg atoms. The atom-field interaction times are controlled via Stark-shifts adjusted in a way that each atom transfers a photon to the cavity, turning atomic detections useless. Fluctuations affecting the control of the atom-field interactions are also considered.
In this article we discuss two schemes of teleportation of atomic states. In the first scheme we consider atoms in a three-level cascade configuration and in the second scheme we consider atoms in a three-level lambda configuration. The experimental realization proposed makes use of cavity Quatum Electrodynamics involving the interaction of Rydberg atoms with a micromaser cavity prepared in a state $|ψ>_{C}=(|0> +|1>)/\sqrt{2}$
A two-photon Fock state is prepared in a cavity sustaining a "source mode " and a "target mode", with a single circular Rydberg atom. In a third-order Raman process, the atom emits a photon in the target while scattering one photon from the source into the target. The final two-photon state is probed by measuring by Ramsey interferometry the cavity light shifts induced by the target field on the same atom. Extensions to other multi-photon processes and to a new type of micromaser are briefly discussed.
We propose a scheme for producing large Fock states in Cavity QED via the implementation of a highly selective atom-field interaction. It is based on Raman excitation of a three-level atom by a classical field and a quantized field mode. Selectivity appears when one tunes to resonance a specific transition inside a chosen atom-field subspace, while other transitions remain dispersive, as a consequence of the field dependent electronic energy shifts. We show that this scheme can be also employed for reconstructing, in a new and efficient way, the Wigner function of the cavity field state.
We study the effects of counter rotating terms in the interaction of quantized light with a two-level atom, by using the method of small rotations. We give an expression for the wave function of the composed system atom plus field and point out one initial wave function that generates a quantum bit of the electromagnetic field with arbitrary amplitudes.
We propose a technique for quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement and heralded preparation of Fock states by dynamics of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). An atomic ensemble trapped in an optical cavity is driven by two external continuous-wave classical fields to form EIT in steady state. As soon as a weak coherent field is injected into the cavity, the EIT system departs from steady state, falls into transient state dynamics by the dispersive coupling between cavity injected photons and atoms. Because the imaginary part of time-dependent linear susceptibility Im[X(t)] of the a…
We demonstrate that superpositions of coherent and displaced Fock states, also referred to as generalized Schrödinger cats cats, can be created by application of a nonlinear displacement operator which is a deformed version of the Glauber displacement operator. Consequently, such generalized cat states can be formally considered as nonlinear coherent states. We then show that Glauber-Fock photonic lattices endowed with alternating positive and negative coupling coefficients give rise to classical analogs of such cat states. In addition, it is pointed out that the analytic propagator of these d…
The relaxation of a quantum field stored in a high-$Q$ superconducting cavity is monitored by non-resonant Rydberg atoms. The field, subjected to repetitive quantum non-demolition (QND) photon counting, undergoes jumps between photon number states. We select ensembles of field realizations evolving from a given Fock state and reconstruct the subsequent evolution of their photon number distributions. We realize in this way a tomography of the photon number relaxation process yielding all the jump rates between Fock states. The damping rates of the $n$ photon states ($0\leq n \leq 7$) are found …
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new method to generate arbitrary Fock-state superpositions in a superconducting quantum circuit, where a qubit is dispersively coupled to a microwave cavity mode without the need of fine-frequency tuning. Here the qubit is used to conditionally modulate the probability amplitudes of the Fock state components of a coherent state to those of the desired superposition state, instead of pumping photons one by one into the cavity as in previous schemes. Our method does not require the adjustment of the qubit frequency during the cavity state preparation, …
Within the framework of exact quantum electrodynamics in dispersing and absorbing media, we have studied the quantum state of the radiation emitted from an initially in the upper state prepared two-level atom in a high-$Q$ cavity, including the regime where the emitted photon belongs to a wave packet that simultaneously covers the areas inside and outside the cavity. For both continuing atom--field interaction and short-term atom--field interaction, we have determined the spatio-temporal shape of the excited outgoing wave packet and calculated the efficiency of the wave packet to carry a one-p…
We present a new paradigm in the field of cavity QED by bringing out remarkable features associated with the avoided crossing of the dressed state levels of the Jaynes Cummings model. We demonstrate how the parametric couplings, realized by a second order nonlinearity in the cavity, can turn the crossing of dressed states into avoided crossings. We show how one can generate coherence between the avoided crossing of dressed states. Such coherences result, for example, in quantum beats in the excitation probability of the qubit. The quality of quantum beats can be considerably improved by adiaba…
Quantum mechanical spreading of a particle hopping on tight binding lattices can be suppressed by the application of an external ac force, leading to periodic wave packet reconstruction. Such a phenomenon, referred to as dynamic localization (DL), occurs for certain magic values of the ratio $Γ=F_0/ ω$ between the amplitude $F_0$ and frequency $ω$ of the ac force. It is generally believed that in the low-frequency limit ($ω\rightarrow 0$) DL can be achieved for an infinitesimally small value of the force $F_0$, i.e. at finite values of $Γ$. Such a normal behavior is found in homogeneous lattic…
We present a scheme to generate arbitrary superposition of the Fock states in a high-Q cavity. This proposal is based on a sequence of laser pulses, which are tuned appropriately to control transitions on Fock state. It is shown that N laser pulses are needed to generate a pure state with a phonon number limit $N$.
A feedback scheme for preparation of photon number states in a microwave cavity is proposed. Quantum Non Demolition (QND) measurement of the cavity field provides information on its actual state. The control consists in injecting into the cavity mode a microwave pulse adjusted to maximize the population of the desired target photon number. In the ideal case (perfect cavity and measures), we present the feedback scheme and its detailed convergence proof through stochastic Lyapunov techniques based on super-martingales and other probabilistic arguments. Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations performed …
We propose a theoretical scheme to deterministically generate Fock states in a Kerr cavity thorough adiabatic variation of the driving field strength and the cavity detuning. We show that the required time to generate a $n$-photon Fock state scales as the square root of $n$. Requirements for the Kerr coefficient relative to the system decoherence rate are provided as a function of desired state fidelity, indicating that the scheme is potentially realizable with the present state of the art in microwave superconducting circuits.
In the paper, we employ a wavefunction approach to investigate the evolution of a two-photon wave packet propagating in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) system. We derive and solve, both analytically and numerically, a set of equations of motion governing the quantum state of the system. That allows us to provide real-time analysis of the evolution of the wave packet two-photon joint spectrum (2PJS) and the excitation dynamics of the JC system in the course of its interaction with the two-photon pulse. We demonstrate that the 2PJS and the spectrum of the wave pac…
We propose a robust scheme to generate multi-photon Fock states in an atom-maser-cavity system using adiabatic passage techniques and topological properties of the dressed eigenenergy surfaces. The mechanism is an exchange of photons from the maser field into the initially empty cavity by bichromatic adiabatic passage. The number of exchanged photons depends on the design of the adiabatic dynamics through and around the conical intersections of dressed eigenenergy surfaces.
Single photon source is one of the key devices for optical quantum information processing. Differing from the usual stimulated Raman adiabatic passage to obtain single-photon radiation, here we propose an approach to produce optical Fock state on demand in the usual atom-cavity system by utilizing the technique of transitionless quantum driving. The present proposal effectively suppresses the unwanted but practically unavoidable nonadiabatic transitions in the previous adiabatic schemes. Therefore, the efficiency of Fock state production by the present technique could be significantly high, ev…
In this paper, we present a protocol to engineer upper-bounded and sliced Jaynes-Cummings and anti-Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonians in cavity quantum electrodynamics. In the upper-bounded Hamiltonians, the atom-field interaction is confined to a subspace of Fock states ranging from $\left\vert 0\right\rangle $ up to $\left\vert 4\right\rangle $, while in the sliced interaction the Fock subspace ranges from $\left\vert M\right\rangle $ up to $\left\vert M+4\right\rangle $. We also show how to build upper-bounded and sliced Liouvillians irrespective of engineering Hamiltonians. The upper-bounded and…

We present a scheme for the deterministic generation of N-photon Fock states from N three-level atoms in a high-finesse optical cavity. The method applies an external laser pulsethat generates an $N$-photon output state while adiabatically keeping the atom-cavity system within a subspace of optically dark states. We present analytical estimates of the error due to amplitude leakage from these dark states for general N, and compare it with explicit results of numerical simulations for N \leq 5. The method is shown to provide a robust source of N-photon states under a variety of experimental con…
The Jaynes-Cummings (JC) system, which describes the interaction between a cavity and a two-level atom, is one of the most important systems in quantum optics. We obtain analytic solutions for the one- and two-photon transport in a waveguide side-coupled to the JC system using input-output formalism in Fock space. With these results, we discuss the conditions under which the JC system functions as a photon switch for waveguide photons in both the strong and weak coupling regimes
In this article we discuss two schemes of teleportation of cavity field states. In the first scheme we consider cavities prepared in a coherent state and in the second scheme we consider cavities prepared in a superposition of zero and one Fock states.
The radiation emitted by a classically pumped three-level $Λ$-type emitter in a resonator cavity featuring both radiative and unwanted losses is studied. In particular, the efficiency of one-photon Fock state excitation of the outgoing wave packet and the spatio-temporal shape of the wave packet are investigated. It is shown that for given shape of the emitter--cavity interaction, adjusting the shape of the pump pulse renders it possible to generate the emission of one-photon Fock state wave packets of desired shape with high efficiency.
We propose a mechanism for producing Fock states on demand leaking from a single mode optical cavity interacting with a single atom and a laser pulse. The number of photons can be chosen, as it is determined by the Zeeman substructure of the ground state of the atom and its initial state. The deterministic generation of a free-propagating Fock state of $1\leq n\leq2F$ photons is achieved, when a circularly polarized laser pulse completely transfers the atomic population between Zeeman sublevels of the ground hyperfine state $F$ through far-detuned Raman scattering thus producing linearly polar…
The on-demand preparation of higher-order Fock states is of fundamental importance in quantum information sciences. We propose and compare different protocols to generate higher-order Fock states in solid state quantum-dot--cavity systems. The protocols make use of a series of laser pulses to excite the quantum dot exciton and off-resonant pulses to control the detuning between dot and cavity. Our theoretical studies include dot and cavity loss processes as well as the pure-dephasing type coupling to longitudinal acoustic phonons in a numerically complete fashion. By going beyond the two-level…
The multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model is investigated and applications in quantum information science are explored. Considering the strong atom-field coupling regime and an $N$-photon interaction, a nonlinear driving field can perform an arbitrary rotation in the Fock space of the cavity mode involving the vacuum and an $M$-Fock state, with $M<N$. Besides, driving the cavity mode with a linear coherent field (superposition of many Fock states), only the cavity states within the Fock subspace {$|0\rangle,|1\rangle,..., |N-1\rangle$} can be populated, i.e., we show how to implement a Fock state …
We theoretically study the deterministic generation of photon Fock states on-demand using a protocol based on a Jaynes Cummings quantum random walk which includes damping. We then show how each of the steps of this protocol can be implemented in a low temperature solid-state quantum system with a Nitrogen-Vacancy centre in a nano-diamond coupled to a nearby high-Q optical cavity. By controlling the coupling duration between the NV and the cavity via the application of a time dependent Stark shift, and by increasing the decay rate of the NV via stimulated emission depletion (STED) a Fock state …
Conventional Glauber coherent states (CS) can be defined in several equivalent ways, e.g., by displacing the vacuum or, explicitly, by their infinite Poissonian expansion in Fock states. It is well known that these definitions become inequivalent if applied to finite $d$-level systems (qudits). We present a comparative Wigner-function description of the qudit CS defined (i) by the action of the truncated displacement operator on the vacuum and (ii) by the Poissonian expansion in Fock states of the Glauber CS truncated at $(d-1)$-photon Fock state. These states can be generated from a classical…
We calculate the emission spectra, the Glauber $g^{(2)}$ function, and the entanglement of formation for a few two-level emitters coupled to a single cavity mode and subject to an external laser-excitation. To evaluate these quantities we couple the system to environmental degrees of freedom which leads to dissipative dynamics. Because of the periodic time-dependence of the system Hamiltonian, the coefficients of the (Markovian) master equation are constant if Floquet states are used as the computational basis. Studying the emission spectra we show that the dynamic Stark effect, i.e., the shif…
We present and analyze a reservoir-engineering approach to stabilizing Fock states in a superconducting microwave cavity which does not require any microwave-frequency control drives. Instead, our system makes use of a Josephson junction biased by a dc voltage which is coupled both to a principle storage cavity and a second auxiliary cavity. Our analysis shows that Fock states can be stabilized with an extremely high fidelity. We also show how the same system can be used to prepare on-demand propagating Fock states, again without the use of microwave pulses.
The observation of genuine quantum features of nano-mechanical motion is a key goal for both fundamental and applied quantum science. To this end, a promising approach is the stabilization of nonclassical features in the presence of dissipation, by means of the tunable coupling with a photonic environment. Here we present a scheme that combines dissipative squeezing with a mechanical nonlinearity to stabilize arbitrary approximations of (displaced) mechanical Fock state of any number. We consider an optomechanical system driven by three control lasers--at the cavity resonance and at the two me…
Stimulated Raman interaction of a classically pumped single three-level $Λ$-type atom in a resonator cavity featuring both radiative and unwanted losses is studied. It is shown that in the regime of stimulated adiabatic Raman passage the excited outgoing wave packet of the cavity-assisted electromagnetic field can be prepared in a one-photon Fock state with high efficiency. In this regime, the spatio-temporal shape of the wave packet does not depend on the interaction shape of the pump field, provided that the interaction of the atom with the pump is time-delayed with respect to the interactio…
We put forward a deterministic dissipative protocol to prepare phonon Fock states in nonlinear quantum optomechanical devices. The system is composed of a mechanical mode interacting with an optical field via radiation pressure, whereas the light mode is laser-driven in the resolved blue-sideband regime. To keep our results tractable, we have switched to an interaction picture in a displaced basis, where the effective Hamiltonian exhibits the selective photon-phonon interaction explicitly. After proper parameter adjustment and similarly to cavity-cooling schemes, the quantum evolution allows s…
We propose a scheme for quantum computing using high-Q cavities in which the qubits are represented by single cavity modes restricted in the space spanned by the two lowest Fock states. We show that single qubit operations and universal multiple qubit gates can be implemented using atoms sequentially crossing the cavities.
An arbitrary initial state of an optical or microwave field in a lossy driven nonlinear cavity can be changed, in the steady-state limit, into a partially incoherent superposition of only the vacuum and the single-photon states. This effect is known as single-photon blockade, which is usually analyzed for a Kerr-type nonlinear cavity parametrically driven by a single-photon process assuming single-photon loss mechanisms. We study photon blockade engineering via a squeezed reservoir, i.e., a quantum reservoir, where only two-photon absorption is allowed. Namely, we analyze a lossy nonlinear cav…
We study the diffraction of quantum degenerate fermionic atoms off of quantized light fields in an optical cavity. We compare the case of a linear cavity with standing wave modes to that of a ring cavity with two counter-propagating traveling wave modes. It is found that the dynamics of the atoms strongly depends on the quantization procedure for the cavity field. For standing waves, no correlations develop between the cavity field and the atoms. Consequently, standing wave Fock states yield the same results as a classical standing wave field while coherent states give rise to a collapse and r…
We describe a scheme of deterministic single-photon subtraction in a solid-state system consisting of a charged quantum dot coupled to a bimodal photonic-crystal cavity with a moderate magnetic field applied in a Voigt configuration. We numerically simulate injection of optical pulses into one of the modes of the bimodal cavity and show that the system deterministically transfers one photon into the second cavity mode for input pulses in the form of both Fock states and coherent states.

We propose a robust scheme to generate single-photon Fock states and atom-photon and atom-atom entanglement in atom-cavity systems. We also present a scheme for quantum networking between two cavity nodes using an atomic channel. The mechanism is based on Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) and half-SCRAP processes in a microwave cavity. The engineering of these states depends on the design of the adiabatic dynamics through the static and dynamic Stark shifts.
Fock states with photon numbers n up to 7 are prepared on demand in a microwave superconducting cavity by a quantum feedback procedure which reverses decoherence-induced quantum jumps. Circular Rydberg atoms are used as quantum non-demolition sensors or as single photon emitter/absorber actuators. The quantum nature of these actuators matches the correction of single-photon quantum jumps due to relaxation. The flexibility of this method is suited to the generation of arbitrary sequences of Fock states.
We investigate the photon induced tunneling phenomena in a photonic crystal cavity containing a strongly coupled quantum dot and describe how this tunneling can be used to generate photon states consisting mainly of a particular Fock state. Additionally, we study experimentally the photon-induced tunneling as a function of excitation laser power and frequency and show the signature of second rung of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian in the observed photon-statistics.
We resolve phonon number states in the spectrum of a superconducting qubit coupled to a multimode acoustic cavity. Crucial to this resolution is the sharp frequency dependence in the qubit-phonon interaction engineered by coupling the qubit to surface acoustic waves in two locations separated by $\sim40$ acoustic wavelengths. In analogy to double-slit diffraction, the resulting self-interference generates high-contrast frequency structure in the qubit-phonon interaction. We observe this frequency structure both in the coupling rate to multiple cavity modes and in the qubit spontaneous emission…
