Discrete convex functions are used in many areas, including operations research, discrete-event systems, game theory, and economics. The objective of this paper is to investigate basic operations such as direct sum, splitting, and aggregation that are related to network induction of discrete convex functions as well as discrete convex sets. Various kinds of discrete convex functions in discrete convex analysis are considered such as integrally convex functions, L-convex functions, M-convex functions, multimodular functions, and discrete midpoint convex functions.
Large horsepower induction motors play a critical role in the operation of industrial facilities. In this respect, the distribution network operators dedicate a high priority to the operational safety of these motor loads. In this paper, the induction motor starting is modeled analytically and in a semi-static fashion. This model is imbedded in a convex distribution system restoration problem. In this optimization problem, it is aimed to determine the optimal status of static loads and the optimal dispatch of distributed generators such that: a) the induction motors can be reaccelerated in a s…
In this paper, we study the rate of convergence of the cyclic projection algorithm applied to finitely many basic semi-algebraic convex sets. We establish an explicit convergence rate estimate which relies on the maximum degree of the polynomials that generate the basic semi-algebraic convex sets and the dimension of the underlying space. We achieve our results by exploiting the algebraic structure of the basic semi-algebraic convex sets.
Large horsepower induction motors play a critical role as industrial drives in production facilities. The operational safety of distribution networks during the starting transients of these motor loads is a critical concern for the operators. In this paper, an analytical and convex optimization model is derived representing the starting transients of the induction motor in a semi-static fashion. This model is used to find the optimal energization sequence of different loads (static and motor loads) following an outage in a distribution network. The optimization problem includes the optimal con…
The basic reproduction number $R_0$ is a fundamental quantity in epidemiological modeling, reflecting the typical number of secondary infections that arise from a single infected individual. While $R_0$ is widely known to scientists, policymakers, and the general public, it has received comparatively little attention in the controls community. This note provides two novel characterizations of $R_0$: a stability characterization and a geometric program characterization. The geometric program characterization allows us to write $R_0$-constrained and budget-constrained optimal resource allocation…
We study some basic properties of the function $f_0:M\rightarrow\IR$ on Hadamard manifolds defined by $$ f_0(x):=\langle u_0,\exp_{x_0}^{-1}x\rangle\quad\mbox{for any $x\in M$}. $$ A characterization for the function to be linear affine is given and a counterexample on Poincaré plane is provided, which in particular, shows that assertions (i) and (ii) claimed in \cite[Proposition 3.4]{Papa2009} are not true, and that the function $f_0$ is indeed not quasi-convex. Furthermore, we discuss the convexity properties of the sub-level sets of the function on Riemannian manifolds with constant section…
In this paper a class of robust two-stage combinatorial optimization problems is discussed. It is assumed that the uncertain second stage costs are specified in the form of a convex uncertainty set, in particular polyhedral or ellipsoidal ones. It is shown that the robust two-stage versions of basic network and selection problems are NP-hard, even in a very restrictive cases. Some exact and approximation algorithms for the general problem are constructed. Polynomial and approximation algorithms for the robust two-stage versions of basic problems, such as the selection and shortest path problem…
Consider a finite system of non-strict real polynomial inequalities and suppose its solution set $S\subseteq\mathbb R^n$ is convex, has nonempty interior and is compact. Suppose that the system satisfies the Archimedean condition, which is slightly stronger than the compactness of $S$. Suppose that each defining polynomial satisfies a second order strict quasiconcavity condition where it vanishes on $S$ (which is very natural because of the convexity of $S$) or its Hessian has a certain matrix sums of squares certificate for negative-semidefiniteness on $S$ (fulfilled trivially by linear polyn…
We introduce Newton-ADMM, a method for fast conic optimization. The basic idea is to view the residuals of consecutive iterates generated by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) as a set of fixed point equations, and then use a nonsmooth Newton method to find a solution; we apply the basic idea to the Splitting Cone Solver (SCS), a state-of-the-art method for solving generic conic optimization problems. We demonstrate theoretically, by extending the theory of semismooth operators, that Newton-ADMM converges rapidly (i.e., quadratically) to a solution; empirically, Newton-ADMM…
We review several (and provide new) results on the theory of moments, sums of squares and basic semi-algebraic sets when convexity is present. In particular, we show that under convexity, the hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations for polynomial optimization simplifies and has finite convergence, a highly desirable feature as convex problems are in principle easier to solve. In addition, if a basic semi-algebraic set K is convex but its defining polynomials are not, we provide a certificate of convexity if a sufficient (and almost necessary) condition is satified. This condition can be checked …
Motivated by applications in robotics and computer vision, we study problems related to spatial reasoning of a 3D environment using sublevel sets of polynomials. These include: tightly containing a cloud of points (e.g., representing an obstacle) with convex or nearly-convex basic semialgebraic sets, computation of Euclidean distances between two such sets, separation of two convex basic semalgebraic sets that overlap, and tight containment of the union of several basic semialgebraic sets with a single convex one. We use algebraic techniques from sum of squares optimization that reduce all the…

For general quadratically-constrained quadratic programming (QCQP), we propose a parabolic relaxation described with convex quadratic constraints. An interesting property of the parabolic relaxation is that the original non-convex feasible set is contained on the boundary of the parabolic relaxation. Under certain assumptions, this property enables one to recover near-optimal feasible points via objective penalization. Moreover, through an appropriate change of coordinates that requires a one-time computation of an optimal basis, the easier-to-solve parabolic relaxation can be made as strong a…
M-convex functions, which are a generalization of valuated matroids, play a central role in discrete convex analysis. Quadratic M-convex functions constitute a basic and important subclass of M-convex functions, which has a close relationship with phylogenetics as well as valued constraint satisfaction problems. In this paper, we consider the quadratic M-convexity testing problem (QMCTP), which is the problem of deciding whether a given quadratic function on $\{0,1\}^n$ is M-convex. We show that QMCTP is co-NP-complete in general, but is polynomial-time solvable under a natural assumption. Fur…
The article deals with operations defined on convex polyhedra or polyhedral convex functions. Given two convex polyhedra, operations like Minkowski sum, intersection and closed convex hull of the union are considered. Basic operations for one convex polyhedron are, for example, the polar, the conical hull and the image under affine transformation. The concept of a P-representation of a convex polyhedron is introduced. It is shown that many polyhedral calculus operations can be expressed explicitly in terms of P-representations. We point out that all the relevant computational effort for polyhe…
We consider the problem of minimizing a convex function over a convex set given access only to an evaluation oracle for the function and a membership oracle for the set. We give a simple algorithm which solves this problem with $\tilde{O}(n^2)$ oracle calls and $\tilde{O}(n^3)$ additional arithmetic operations. Using this result, we obtain more efficient reductions among the five basic oracles for convex sets and functions defined by Grötschel, Lovasz and Schrijver.
In this paper we introduce disciplined convex-concave programming (DCCP), which combines the ideas of disciplined convex programming (DCP) with convex-concave programming (CCP). Convex-concave programming is an organized heuristic for solving nonconvex problems that involve objective and constraint functions that are a sum of a convex and a concave term. DCP is a structured way to define convex optimization problems, based on a family of basic convex and concave functions and a few rules for combining them. Problems expressed using DCP can be automatically converted to standard form and solved…
We present a method for constructing Constant Function Market Makers (CFMMs) whose portfolio value functions match a desired payoff. More specifically, we show that the space of concave, nonnegative, nondecreasing, 1-homogeneous payoff functions and the space of convex CFMMs are equivalent; in other words, every CFMM has a concave, nonnegative, nondecreasing, 1-homogeneous payoff function, and every payoff function with these properties has a corresponding convex CFMM. We demonstrate a simple method for recovering a CFMM trading function that produces this desired payoff. This method uses only…
The self-concordant-like property of a smooth convex function is a new analytical structure that generalizes the self-concordant notion. While a wide variety of important applications feature the self-concordant-like property, this concept has heretofore remained unexploited in convex optimization. To this end, we develop a variable metric framework of minimizing the sum of a "simple" convex function and a self-concordant-like function. We introduce a new analytic step-size selection procedure and prove that the basic gradient algorithm has improved convergence guarantees as compared to "fast"…
