Conference outlook talk at The 21st international workshop on neutrinos from accelerators (NuFact2019), August 26 - August 31, 2019, Daegu, Korea 13 pages, 9 figures
Here I identify some of the opportunities in particle physics associated to the lepton sector, according to their perceived significance, and taking into account the current state-of-the-art.
I present a personal vision of what is essential in the field of neutrino mass, both from the point of view of what has been achieved and what could lie ahead. In the process, I offer a logical, theoretical and phenomenological rationale behind my opinions. It is however neither a summary of what was discussed in the conference nor a party-line viewpoint, rather an attempt to dig through the enormous body of material in our field in order to uncover a common unifying thread. The main focus is on the search for a predictive and self-contained theory of the origin and nature of neutrino mass, wi…
As a community, our goal is to understand the fundamental nature of energy, matter, space, and time, and to apply that knowledge to understand the birth, evolution and fate of the universe. Our scope is broad and we use many tools: accelerator, non-accelerator & cosmological observations, all have a critical role to play. The progress we have made towards our goal, the tools we need to progress further, the opportunities we have for achieving transformational paradigm-altering scientific advances: great discoveries, and the importance of being a united global field to make progress toward our …
This brief review grew out from the HEP Concluding Talk of the {\it 25th Anniversary of the Rencontres du Vietnam}, held August 2018 in Quy Nhon. The first two-thirds gives a Summary and Highlights, or snapshot, of High Energy Physics at the end of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Run 2. It can be view as the combined effort of the program organizers, the invited plenary speakers, and finally filtered into the present mosaic. It certainly should not be viewed as comprehensive. In the second one-third, a more personal Perspective and Outlook is given, including my take on the flavor anomalies, and w…
What life is there after Higgs? Specifically, what physics lies beyond the Standard Model (SM)? These are the biggest questions in particle physics today, and my talk is oriented towards efforts to answer them at the LHC and elsewhere.
Energy distributions of decay products carry information on the kinematics of the decay in ways that are at the same time straightforward and quite hidden. I will review these properties and discuss their early historical applications as well as more recent ones in the context of i) methods for the measurement of masses of new physics particle with semi-invisible decays, ii) the characterization of Dark Matter particles produced at colliders, iii) precision mass measurements of Standard Model particles, in particular of the top quark. Finally I will give an outlook of further developments and …
We review the recent highlights of theoretical flavour physics, based on the theory summary talk given at FPCP2017. Over the past years, a number of intriguing anomalies have emerged in flavour violating $K$ and $B$ meson decays, constituting some of the most promising hints for the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model. We discuss the theory status of these anomalies and outline possible future directions to test the underlying New Physics.
A very brief overview is presented on some of the current most active areas of research in formal aspects of High Energy Physics and Cosmology. Including the recent breakthrough on the black hole information paradox, developments on amplitudes, the bootstrap and swampland programmes as well as progress towards realistic UV complete models of particle physics and cosmology. Perspectives on future contact with observations are discussed, emphasising the long term prospect for ultra high frequency gravitational waves to test early universe physics beyond the Standard Model.
The strongest constraints on the Yukawa-type corrections to Newton's gravitational law and on the coupling constants of axion-like particles to nucleons, following from recently performed experiments of the Casimir physics, are presented. Specifically, the constraints obtained from measurements of the lateral and normal Casimir forces between sinusoidally corrugated surfaces, and from the isoelectronic experiment are considered, and the ranges of their greatest strength are refined. Minor modifications in the experimental setups are proposed which allow strengthening the resultant constraints …
Kilometer$^3$-scale neutrino detectors such as IceCube, ANTARES, and the proposed Km3Net neutrino observatory in the Mediterranean have measured, and will continue to characterize, the atmospheric neutrino spectrum above 1 TeV. Such precise measurements enable us to probe new neutrino physics, in particular, those that arise from Lorentz violation. In this paper, we first relate the effective new physics hamiltonian terms with the Lorentz violating literature. Second, we calculate the oscillation probability formulas for the two-level $ν_μ-ν_τ$ sector. Finally, we comment on some of the challe…
This topical group focuses on searches for signals from physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM), both from a theoretical and experimental perspective, including neutrino-related BSM and searches for BSM in other sectors using neutrino facilities.
I present a grand view of some of the main particle physics challenges from a neutrino perspective. After a brief review of the current status of neutrino physics, I illustrate the possible role neutrinos can play in the elucidation of various puzzles in particle physics and cosmology, for which the Standard Model offers no answer.
Solar neutrino studies triggered and largely motivated the major developments in neutrino physics in the last 50 years. Theory of neutrino propagation in different media with matter and fields has been elaborated. It includes oscillations in vacuum and matter, resonance flavor conversion and resonance oscillations, spin and spin-flavor precession, etc. LMA MSW has been established as the true solution of the solar neutrino problem. Parameters theta12 and Delta_m21^2 have been measured; theta13 extracted from the solar data is in agreement with results from reactor experiments. Solar neutrino s…
Neutrinos produced by nuclear reactors have played a major role in advancing our knowledge of the properties of neutrinos. The first direct detection of the neutrino, confirming its existence, was performed using reactor neutrinos. More recent experiments utilizing reactor neutrinos have also found clear evidence for neutrino oscillation, providing unique input for the determination of neutrino mass and mixing. Ongoing and future reactor neutrino experiments will explore other important issues, including the neutrino mass hierarchy and the search for sterile neutrinos and other new physics bey…
Since the discovery of nuclear beta decay, nuclear physicists have studied the weak interaction and the nature of neutrinos. Many recent and current experiments have been focused on the elucidation of neutrino oscillations and neutrino mass. The quest for the absolute value of neutrino mass continues with higher precision studies of the tritium beta decay spectrum near the endpoint. Neutrino oscillations are studied through measurements of reactor neutrinos as a function of baseline and energy. And experiments searching for neutrinoless double beta decay seek to discover violation of lepton nu…
Most of the free parameters in the Standard Model (SM) -- a quantum field theory which has successfully elucidated the behaviors of strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions of all the known fundamental particles, come from the lepton and quark flavors. The discovery of neutrino oscillations has proved that the SM is incomplete, at least in its lepton sector; and thus the door of opportunity is opened to exploring new physics beyond the SM and solving a number of flavor puzzles. In this review article we give an overview of important progress made in understanding the mass spectra, flavor …
We discuss the recent progress in neutrino physics in the following fields: (i) interpretation of the short and long neutrino oscillation data in terms of neutrino flavor transitions; (ii) models for neutrino masses and mixings.
