In this work we derive the first theoretical prediction of the cross-correlation signal between the unresolved gamma-ray background and the 21-cm line originated by the spin-flip transition of neutral hydrogen atoms, by taking as benchmark experiment the space telescope {\it Fermi}-LAT for gamma rays and the next-generation radio telescope Square Kilometer Array (SKA) as well as its precursor MeerKAT for the 21-cm emission. The attainable bounds in the dark matter (DM) parameter space are envisioned to be competitive already with the combination {\it Fermi}-LAT $\times$ MeerKAT, but SKA will allow to go deeper and probe a thermal DM particle up to masses of 130 GeV. A future gamma-ray detector with better angular resolution and larger exposure together with an ungraded radio telescope will have the potentiality to probe a DM candidate with thermal annihilation cross-section and masses up to the TeV scale.
In this contribution I review the present status and discuss some prospects for indirect detection of dark matter with gamma-rays. Thanks to the Fermi Large Area Telescope, searches in gamma-rays have reached sensitivities that allow to probe the most interesting parameter space of the weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) paradigm. This gain in sensitivity is naturally accompanied by a number of detection claims or indications, the most recent being the claim of a line feature at a dark matter particle mass of $\sim$ 130 GeV at the Galactic Centre, a claim which requires confirmation fr…
Searches for dark matter annihilation signals in the diffuse gamma-ray background are promising. We present the first comprehensive study utilizing both flux and anisotropy, using the example of a spectral line signal. Besides improving sensitivity, a combined analysis will help separately determine the particle properties of dark matter and the cosmological aspects of its clumping into halo substructure. The significance of a signal in a shot-noise-dominated anisotropy analysis increases linearly with time $t$, as opposed to $\sqrt{t}$ for a flux analysis, so a flux hint might be confirmed wi…
The launch of the gamma-ray telescope Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) started a pivotal period in indirect detection of dark matter. By outperforming expectations, for the first time a robust and stringent test of the paradigm of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) is within reach. In this paper, we discuss astrophysical targets for WIMP detection and the challenges they present, review the analysis tools which have been employed to tackle these challenges, and summarize the status of constraints on and the claimed detections in the WIMP parameter space. Methods and results wil…
The annihilations of WIMPs produce high energy gamma-rays in the final state. These high energy gamma-rays may be detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Amongst the plausible targets are the Galactic Center, the centre of galaxy clusters, dwarf Sphreroidal galaxies and substructures in Galactic haloes. I will review on the recent results from observations of ongoing IACTs.
In many cosmologies dark matter clusters on sub-kiloparsec scales and forms compact subhalos, in which the majority of Galactic dark matter could reside. Null results in direct detection experiments since their advent four decades ago could then be the result of extremely rare encounters between the Earth and these subhalos. We investigate alternative and promising means to identify subhalo dark matter interacting with Standard Model particles: (1) subhalo collisions with old neutron stars can transfer kinetic energy and brighten the latter to luminosities within the reach of imminent infrared…
We aim to understand the nature of the absorbing neutral gas in the galaxies hosting high-redshift long-duration GRBs and to determine their physical conditions. We report the detection of a significant number of previously unidentified allowed transition lines of Fe+, involving the fine structure of the ground term and that of other excited levels, from the zabs=3.969, log N(H0)=22.10 DLA system located in the host galaxy of GRB 050730. The time-dependent evolution of the observed Fe+ energy-level populations is modelled by assuming the excitation mechanism is fluorescence following excitatio…
In this thesis, we examined the possibilities offered by multi-messenger astronomy in the context of indirect dark matter detection. We have applied a multi-wavelength strategy by studying different signals across the electromagnetic spectrum (gamma-rays, X-rays, radio waves) produced at different scales of the Universe (galactic, extragalactic, cosmic web filaments). In Part I, we obtained the first-ever prediction of the cross-correlation signal between the extragalactic gamma-ray flux and the 21cm line emitted by hydrogen atoms in dark matter halos. We showed that the neutral hydrogen distr…
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory is a wide field-of-view observatory sensitive to 0.5 TeV - 100 TeV gamma-rays and cosmic-rays in the State of Puebla, Mexico at an altitude of 4100m. The HAWC observatory performed an indirect search for dark matter via GeV-TeV photons resulting from dark matter annihilation and decay considering various sources, including dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), the M31 galaxy and the Virgo cluster, as well as a combined limit using the dSphs. HAWC has not seen statistically significant excess from these sources. We searched for dark ma…
A leading hypothesis for the nature of the elusive dark matter are thermally produced, weakly interacting massive particles that arise in many theories beyond the standard model of particle physics. Their self-annihilation in astrophysical regions of high density provides a potential means of indirectly detecting dark matter through the annihilation products, which nicely complements direct and collider searches. Here, I review the case of gamma rays which are particularly promising in this respect: distinct and unambiguous spectral signatures would not only allow a clear discrimination from a…
We show, by using an extensive sample of viable supersymmetric models as templates, that indirect detection of dark matter through gamma rays may have a large potential for identifying the nature of dark matter. This is in particular true also for models that give too weak dark matter-nucleon scattering cross sections to be probed by present and planned direct detection experiments. Also models with a mass scale too high to be accessible at CERN's LHC accelerator may show up in next-generation imaging Cherenkov telescope arrays. Based on our our findings, we therefore suggest to view indirect …
Recently, new data on antiprotons and positrons from PAMELA, e- + e+ spectra from ATIC, FERMI and HESS up to TeV energies all indicate deviations from expectations, which has caused an interesting mix of new explanations, ranging from background, standard astrophysical sources to signals from dark matter (DM) annihilation. Unfortunately, the excess in positrons is not matched with obvious excesses in antiprotons or gamma rays, so a new class of DM scenarios with leptophilic WIMP candidates have been invoked. On the other hand, the increase in the positron fraction, which could have had any spe…
Due to their long mean free paths, X-rays are expected to have many significant impacts globally on the properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) by their heating and ionizing processes on large scales. At high redshifts, X-rays from Population (Pop) III binaries might have important effects on cosmic reionization and the Lyman alpha forest. As a continuation of our previous work on Pop III binary X-rays (Xu et al. 2014), we use the Pop III distribution and evolution from the Renaissance Simulations, a suite of self-consistent cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the formatio…
Cold dark matter subhalos are expected to populate galaxies in numbers. If dark matter self-annihilates, these objects turn into prime targets for indirect searches, in particular with gamma-ray telescopes. Incidentally, the Fermi-LAT catalog already contains many unidentified sources that might be associated with subhalos. In this paper, we determine the probability for subhalos to be identified as gamma-ray pointlike sources from their predicted distribution properties. We use a semi-analytical model for the Galactic subhalo population, which, in contrast to cosmological simulations, can be …
Recent observations of isotropic diffuse backgrounds by Fermi and IceCube allow us to get more insight into distant very-high-energy (VHE) and ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-ray/neutrino emitters, including cosmic-ray accelerators/sources. First, we investigate the contribution of intergalactic cascades induced by gamma-rays and/or cosmic rays (CRs) to the diffuse gamma-ray background (DGB) in view of the latest Fermi data. We identify a possible VHE Excess from the fact that the Fermi data are well above expectations for an attenuated power law, and show that cascades induced by VHE gamma rays…
We propose a new method to search for axion-like particles (ALPs) based on the gamma-rays produced concomitant with high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The existence of high-energy neutrinos implies production of gamma-rays in the same sources. Photons can convert into ALPs in the sources' magnetic fields, and will travel as ALPs through extragalactic space. Back-conversion in the Milky Way's magnetic field leads to a diffuse anisotropic high-energy photon flux that existing and upcoming gamma-ray detectors, like HAWC, CTA, and LHAASO can detect. This method probes unexplored ALP parameter sp…
The recently published GALFA-HI Compact Cloud Catalogue lists 20 neutral hydrogen clouds that might pinpoint previously undiscovered high-latitude dwarf galaxies. Detection of an associated gamma-ray dark matter signal could provide a route to distinguish unambiguously between truly dark matter dominated systems that have accumulated neutral hydrogen but have not successfully ignited star formation and pure gaseous structures devoid of dark matter. We use 4.3 years of Fermi observations to derive gamma-ray flux upper limits in the 1-300 GeV energy range for the sample. Limits on gamma rays fro…
Indirect dark matter searches are briefly reviewed. Current experimental data from satellites and Cherenkov telescopes searching for antimatter and gamma rays in galactic and extragalactic regions, are compared with predictions from theoretical models of dark matter. The analysis is focused on WIMPs such as the neutralino and the sneutrino, and a superWIMP such as the gravitino, in several interesting supersymmetric models. In particular, the discussion is carried out in the context of R-parity conserving models such as the MSSM, the NMSSM, and an extended NMSSM, and the R-parity violating mod…
In these lectures, I describe a variety of efforts to identify or constrain the identity of dark matter by detecting the annihilation or decay products of these particles, or their effects. After reviewing the motivation for indirect searches, I discuss what we have learned about dark matter from observations of gamma rays, cosmic rays and neutrinos, as well as the cosmic microwave background. Measurements such as these have been used to significantly constrain a wide range of thermal relic dark matter candidates, in particular those with masses below a few hundred GeV. I also discuss a number…
Due to their long mean free path, X-rays are expected to have an important impact on cosmic reionization by heating and ionizing the IGM on large scales, especially after simulations have suggested that Population III stars may form in pairs at redshifts as high as 20 - 30. We use the Pop III distribution and evolution from a self-consistent cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulation of the formation of the first galaxies and a simple Pop III X-ray binaries model to estimate their X-ray output in a high density region larger than 100 comoving (Mpc)$^3$. We then combine three different met…
We investigate dwarf irregular(dIrr) galaxies as a new category of targets for indirect Dark Matter(DM) searches with gamma-rays. In the framework of point-like analysis, dwarf spheroidal(dSph) galaxies are usually considered as one of the best category of targets for indirect DM searches. Nonetheless, as a result of their uncertain kinematics, the DM content and astrophysical J-factors of dSphs are usually affected by significant errors. In this paper, we study a sample of 36 dIrrs as prospective targets of interest. In the framework of the universal rotation curve, the kinematics of dIrr gal…
The indirect detection of dark matter annihilation and decay using observations of photons, charged cosmic rays, and neutrinos offers a promising means of identifying the particle nature of this elusive component of the universe. The last decade has seen substantial advances in observational data sets, complemented by new insights from numerical simulations, which together have enabled for the first time strong constraints on dark matter particle models, and have revealed several intriguing hints of possible signals. This review provides an introduction to indirect detection methods and an ove…
Diffuse, non-thermal extended emission not associated with the AGN phenomenon, found in many clusters of galaxies hosted by an AGN, are related to the acceleration of cosmic rays. In the current work we present preliminary evidence of absence of such formations in clusters of galaxies hosted by optically identified cD galaxies. Our subsample consists of three powerful low redshift radiogalaxies, centered in poor clusters of galaxies. We have searched for radio relics and (mini)halos which could be forming as a result of the confinement of cosmic rays by bubbles creayed by the AGN. We report on…
Dark matter subhalos, predicted in large numbers in the cold dark matter scenario, should have an impact on particle dark matter searches. Recent results show that tidal disruption of these objects in computer simulations is over-efficient due to numerical artifacts and resolution effects. Accounting for these results, we re-estimate the subhalo abundance in the Milky Way using semi-analytical techniques. In particular, we show that the boost factor for gamma rays and cosmic-ray antiprotons is increased by roughly a factor of two.
High-energy photons with $\mathcal{O}$(MeV) energies from radioactive contaminants can scatter in a solid-state target material and constitute an important low-energy background for sub-GeV dark matter direct-detection searches. This background is most noticeable for energy deposits in the $1 - 100$ meV range due to the partially coherent scattering enhancement in the forward scattering direction. We comprehensively quantify the resulting single- and multi-phonon background in Si, Ge, GaAs, SiC, and Al$_2$O$_3$ target materials, which are representative of target materials of interest in low-m…
