We introduce a method to estimate the HI mass within the optical radius of disk galaxies from integrated HI spectra, with an uncertainty of 0.09 dex. We use these estimates to study how inner HI fuels star formation in late-type disk galaxies. We find that star formation rate (SFR) at a given stellar mass ($M_*$) is well correlated with the inner HI surface density ($Σ_{\rm HI,in}$) and inner HI mass-to-stellar mass ratio. For the massive ($M_*>10^{10} M_{\odot}$) disk galaxies, higher SFR at a given stellar mass is also related with higher efficiency of converting inner HI to molecular gas, but no such correlation is found for the total HI mass. The highest $Σ_{\rm HI,in}$ and the fastest depletion of the total neutral gas within the optical disks are found in the most compact and star-forming disk galaxies at a given stellar mass. These results highlight the important role of inner HI as an intermediate step of fueling star formation in disk galaxies.
We present a structural decomposition analysis of the galaxies in the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS) using (gri) images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Utilising the 2D Bayesian light profile fitting code ProFit, we fit single- and double-component models taking advantage of a robust Markov chain Monte Carlo optimisation algorithm in which we assume a Sersic profile for single-component models and a combination of a Sersic bulge and near-exponential disc (0.5 < n < 1.5) for double-component models. We investigate the effect of bulges on the atomic hydrogen (HI) content in galaxi…
We use our catalogue of structural decomposition measurements for the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS) to study the role of bulges both along and across the galaxy star-forming main sequence (SFMS). We show that the slope in the $sSFR$-$M_{\star}$ relation flattens by $\sim$0.1 dex per decade in $M_{\star}$ when re-normalising $sSFR$ by disc stellar mass instead of total stellar mass. However, recasting the $sSFR$-$M_{\star}$ relation into the framework of only disc-specific quantities shows that a residual trend remains against disc stellar mass with equivalent slope and comparable …
We present the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS), a gas fraction-limited census of the atomic (HI) gas content of 1179 galaxies selected only by stellar mass ($M_\star =10^{9}-10^{11.5} M_\odot$) and redshift ($0.01<z<0.05$). This includes new Arecibo observations of 208 galaxies, for which we release catalogs and HI spectra. In addition to extending the GASS HI scaling relations by one decade in stellar mass, we quantify total (atomic+molecular) cold gas fractions and molecular-to-atomic gas mass ratios, $R_{mol}$, for the subset of 477 galaxies observed with the IRAM 30 m telescope.…
Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, we have made the first high spatial and spectral resolution observations of the molecular gas and dust in the prototypical blue compact dwarf galaxy II Zw 40. The CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) emission is clumpy and distributed throughout the central star-forming region. Only one of eight molecular clouds has associated star formation. The continuum spectral energy distribution is dominated by free-free and synchrotron: at 870$μm$, only 50% of the emission is from dust. We derive a CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor by several methods including a new me…
By using AMR cosmological hydrodynamic N-body zoom-in simulations, with the RAMSES code, we studied the mass transport processes onto galactic nuclei from high redshift up to $z\sim6$. Due to the large dynamical range of the simulations we were able to study the mass accretion process on scales from $\sim50[kpc]$ to $\sim$ few $1[pc]$. We studied the BH growth on to the galactic center in relation with the mass transport processes associated to both the Reynolds stress and the gravitational stress on the disc. Such methodology allowed us to identify the main mass transport process as a functio…
We study the shapes of spatially integrated H I emission-line profiles of galaxies in the EAGLE simulation using three separate measures of the profile's asymmetry. We show that the subset of EAGLE galaxies whose gas fractions and stellar masses are consistent with those in the xGASS survey also have similar H I line asymmetries. Central galaxies with symmetric H I line profiles typically correspond to rotationally supported H I and stellar disks, but those with asymmetric line profiles may or may not correspond to dispersion-dominated systems. Galaxies with symmetric H I emission lines are, o…
We characterize the conditional distributions of the HI gas-to-stellar mass ratio, $R_{HI}\equiv M_{HI}/M_{\ast}$, given the stellar mass, $M_{\ast}$, of local galaxies from $M_{\ast}\sim 10^7$ to $10^{12}$ $M_{\odot}$ separated into centrals and satellites as well as into late- and early-type galaxies (LTGs and ETGs, respectively). To do so, we use (1) the homogeneous "eXtended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey", xGASS (Catinella et al. 2018), by re-estimating their upper limits and taking into account them in our statistical analysis; and (2) the results from a large compilation of HI data reported …

To facilitate the study of black hole fueling, star formation, and feedback in galaxies, we outline a method for treating the radial forces on interstellar gas due to absorption of photons by dust grains. The method gives the correct behavior in all of the relevant limits (dominated by the central point source; dominated by the distributed isotropic source; optically thin; optically thick to UV/optical; optically thick to IR) and reasonably interpolates between the limits when necessary. The method is explicitly energy conserving so that UV/optical photons that are absorbed are not lost, but a…
The origin of the cold gas in central galaxies in groups is still a matter of debate. We present Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of 18 optically selected local Brightest Group Galaxies (BGGs) to study the kinematics and distribution of the optical emission-line gas. MUSE observations reveal a distribution of gas morphologies including ten complex networks of filaments extending up to 10 kpc to two compact (<3 kpc) and five extended (>5 kpc) disk-dominated structures. Some rotating disks show rings and elongated structures arising from the central disk. The kinematics of t…
We present results of the clustering analysis between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies at redshift 0.1-1.0 for investigating properties of galaxies associated with the AGNs, revealing the nature of fueling mechanism of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We used 8059 SDSS AGNs/QSOs for which virial masses of individual SMBHs were measured, and divided them into four mass groups. Cross-correlation analysis was performed and bias for each mass group was derived. The averaged color and luminosity distributions of galaxies around the AGNs/QSOs were also derived for each mass group. The gal…
Observations of AGN have suggested a possible delay between the peak of star formation (on some scale) and AGN activity. Inefficient fueling (and/or feedback) from fast stellar winds has been invoked to explain this, but we argue this is unlikely in bright systems accreting primarily cold dense gas. We show that such a delay can arise even in bright quasars for purely dynamical reasons. If some large-scale process produces rapid inflow, smaller scales will quickly become gas-dominated. As the gas density peaks, so does the SFR. However, gravitational torques which govern further inflow are rel…
We investigate the molecular gas content of z~6 quasar host galaxies using the IRAM / Northern Extended Millimeter Array. We target the 3mm dust continuum, and the line emission from CO(6-5), CO(7-6), [CI]2-1 in 10 infra-red-luminous quasars that have been previously studied in their 1mm dust continuum and [CII] line emission. We detect CO(7-6) at various degrees of significance in all the targeted sources, thus doubling the number of such detections in z~6 quasars. The 3mm to 1mm flux density ratios are consistent with a modified black body spectrum with a dust temperature $T_{dust}$~47 K and…
Galactic halo gas traces inflowing star formation fuel and feedback from a galaxy's disk and is therefore crucial to our understanding of galaxy evolution. In this review, we summarize the multi-wavelength observational properties and origin models of Galactic and low redshift spiral galaxy halo gas. Galactic halos contain multiphase gas flows that are dominated in mass by the ionized component and extend to large radii. The densest, coldest halo gas observed in neutral hydrogen (HI) is generally closest to the disk (< 20 kpc), and absorption line results indicate warm and warm-hot diffuse hal…
We analyse measurements of the evolving stellar mass (M0) at which the bending of the star-forming main sequence (MS) occurs over 0<z<4. We find M0~10^10Msun over 0<z<1, then M0 rises up to ~10^11Msun at z=2, and then stays flat or slowly increases towards higher redshifts. When converting M0 values into hosting dark matter halo masses, we show that this behaviour is remarkably consistent with the evolving cold- to hot-accretion transition mass, as predicted by theory and defined by the redshift-independent Mshock at z<1.4 and by the rising Mstream at z>1.4 (for which we propose a revision in …
