We demonstrate the emergence of transparent behavior in a chain of periodically spaced non-identical quantums emitters coupled to a waveguide, in the special case when the inter-atomic separation is a half-integral multiple of the resonant wavelength, i.e. $kL$ is an integral multiple of $π$, with $k$ being the spatial frequency and $L$ the spatial periodicity. When equal but opposite frequency detunings are assigned in pairs to a system of even number of atoms, perfect transmission ensues. When the chain size is odd, a similar assignment leads to the disappearance of collective effects as the odd atom determines the spectral behavior. We also manifest the robustness of these features against dissipative effects and show, how the spectral behavior hinges significantly on the relative detunings between the atoms as compared to the decay rate. A key distinction from the phenomenon of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) is that in the waveguide case, the presence of an intrinsic waveguide mediated phase coupling between the atoms strongly affects the transport properties. Furthermore, while reciprocity in single-photon transport does not generally hold due to the phase coupling, we observe an interesting exception for $kL = nπ$ at which the waveguide demonstrates reciprocal behavior with regard to both the transmission and reflection coefficients.
A technique based on using optical fiber taper waveguides for probing single emitters embedded in thin dielectric membranes is assessed through numerical simulations. For an appropriate membrane geometry, photoluminescence collection efficiencies in excess of 10 % are predicted, exceeding the efficiency of standard free-space collection by an order of magnitude. Our results indicate that these fiber taper waveguides offer excellent prospects for performing efficient spectroscopy of single emitters embedded in thin films, such as a single self-assembled quantum dot in a semiconductor membrane.
Coherent interactions between quantum emitters in tailored photonic structures is a fundamental building block for future quantum technologies, but remains challenging to observe in complex solid-state environments, where the role of decoherence must be considered. Here, we investigate the optical interaction between two quantum emitters mediated by one-dimensional waveguides in a realistic solid-state environment, focusing on the creation, population and detection of a sub-radiant state, in the presence of dephasing. We show that as dephasing increases, the signatures of sub-radiance quickly …
In a preceding paper we introduced a formalism to study the scattering of low intensity fields from a system of multi-level emitters embedded in a $3$D dielectric medium. Here we show how this photon-scattering relation can be used to analyze the scattering of single photons and weak coherent states from any generic multi-level quantum emitter coupled to a $1$D waveguide. The reduction of the photon-scattering relation to $1$D waveguides provides for the first time a direct solution of the scattering problem involving low intensity fields in the waveguide QED regime. To show how our formalism …
We demonstrate the possibility of designing efficient, non reciprocal few-photon devices by exploiting the chiral coupling between two waveguide modes and a single quantum emitter. We show how this system can induce non-reciprocal photon transport at the single-photon level and act as an optical diode. Afterwards, we also show how the same system shows a transistor-like behaviour for a two-photon input. The efficiency in both cases is shown to be large for feasible experimental implementations. Our results illustrate the potential of chiral waveguide-emitter couplings for applications in quant…
We present a heuristic mathematical model of the relation between the geometry of a photonic crystal waveguide and the Purcell enhancement factor at a particular wavelength of interest. We use this model to propose approaches to the design of a photonic crystal waveguide maximizing the Purcell enhancement at a target wavelength. Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed structures exhibit robustness to fabrication defects introduced into photonic crystal geometry.
Planar photonic nanostructures have recently attracted a great deal of attention for quantum optics applications. In this article, we carry out full 3D numerical simulations to fully account for all radiation channels and thereby quantify the coupling efficiency of a quantum emitter embedded in a photonic-crystal waveguide. We utilize mixed boundary conditions by combining active Dirichlet boundary conditions for the guided mode and perfectly-matched layers for the radiation modes. In this way, the leakage from the quantum emitter to the surrounding environment can be determined and the spectr…
The single-photon scattering in a rectangular waveguide by a V-type three-level emitter is studied for large range of input-photon energy beyond the single-mode region. By using Lippmann-Schwinger formalism, the necessary and sufficient conditions of complete transmission and complete reflection are derived analytically. In the single-mode region, the complete transmission caused by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and the complete reflection due to Fano resonance can both be achieved by adjusting the emitter's parameters. But in the multi-mode region, except that the input-state…
We study cooperative behavior of quantum dipole emitters coupled to a rectangular waveguide with dielectric core and silver cladding. We investigate cooperative emission and inter-emitter entanglement generation phenomena for emitters whose resonant frequencies are near the frequency cutoff of the waveguide, where the waveguide effectively behaves as zero-index metamaterial. We show that coupling emitters to a zero-index waveguide allows one to relax the constraint on precision positioning of emitters for observing inter-emitter entanglement generation and extend the spatial scale at which the…
We show that strongly correlated photon transport can be observed in waveguides containing optically dense ensembles of emitters. Remarkably, this occurs even for weak coupling efficiencies. Specifically, we compute the photon transport properties through a chirally coupled system of $N$ two-level systems driven by a weak coherent field, where each emitter can also scatter photons out of the waveguide. The photon correlations arise due to an interplay of nonlinearity and coupling to a loss reservoir, which creates a strong effective interaction between transmitted photons. The highly correlate…
Nanophotonic interfaces between single emitters and light promise to enable new quantum optical technologies. Here, we use a combination of finite element simulations and analytic quantum theory to investigate the interaction of various quantum emitters with slot-waveguide rings. We predict that for rings with radii as small as 1.44 $μ$m (Q = 27,900), near-unity emitter-waveguide coupling efficiencies and emission enhancements on the order of 1300 can be achieved. By tuning the ring geometry or introducing losses, we show that realistic emitter-ring systems can be made to be either weakly or s…
We report on the coherent internal-state control of single crystalline nanodiamonds, containing on average 1200 nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, embedded in three-dimensional direct-laser-written waveguides. We excite the NV centers by light propagating through the waveguide, and we show that emitted fluorescence can be efficiently coupled to the waveguide modes. We find an average coupling efficiency of 21.6% into all guided modes. Moreover, we investigate optically-detected magnetic-resonance spectra as well as Rabi oscillations recorded through the waveguide-coupled signal. Our work shows tha…
A quantum emitter efficiently coupled to a nanophotonic waveguide constitutes a promising system for the realization of single-photon transistors, quantum-logic gates based on giant single-photon nonlinearities, and high bit-rate deterministic single-photon sources. The key figure of merit for such devices is the $β$-factor, which is the probability for an emitted single photon to be channeled into a desired waveguide mode. We report on the experimental achievement of $β= 98.43 \pm 0.04\%$ for a quantum dot coupled to a photonic-crystal waveguide, corresponding to a single-emitter cooperativit…
This review describes the emerging field of waveguide quantum electrodynamics (WQED) concerned with the interaction of photons propagating in a waveguide with localized quantum emitters. The collective emitter-photon interactions can lead to both enhanced and suppressed coupling compared to the case of independent emitters. Here, we focus on guided photons and ordered arrays, leading to super- and sub-radiant states, bound photon states and quantum correlations with promising quantum information applications. We highlight recent groundbreaking experiments performed with different quantum platf…
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is gaining interest for potential applications in integrated quantum nanophotonics. Yet, to establish hBN as an integrated photonic platform several cornerstones must be established, including the integration and coupling of quantum emitters to photonic waveguides. Supported by simulations, we study the approach of monolithic integration, which is expected to have coupling efficiencies that are 4 times higher than those of a conventional hybrid stacking strategy. We then demonstrate the fabrication of such devices from hBN and showcase the successful integration o…
We theoretically study a system composed by a waveguide and a moving quantum emitter in the single excitation subspace, treating the emitter motional degree of freedom quantum mechanically. We first characterize single-photon scattering off a single moving quantum emitter, showing both nonreciprocal transmission and recoil-induced reduction of the quantum emitter motional energy. We then characterize the bound states within the bandgap, which display a motion-induced asymmetric phase in real space. We also demonstrate how these bound states form a continuous band with exotic dispersion relatio…
One of the main steps towards large-scale quantum photonics consists of the integration of single photon sources (SPS) with photonic integrated circuits (PICs). For that purpose, the PICs should offer an efficient light coupling and a high preservation of the indistinguishability of photons. Therefore, optimization of the indistinguishability through waveguide design is especially relevant. In this work we have developed an analytical model to calculate the coupling and the indistinguishability of an ideal point-source quantum emitter coupled to a photonic waveguide depending on source orienta…
We report a resonant enhancement of luminescence intensity from an ensemble of CdS/ZnS quantum dots embedded in a nanoscale rectangular photonic waveguide operating at the epsilon-near-zero regime.
We study correlated two-photon transport in a (quasi) one-dimensional photonic waveguide coupled to a three-level $Λ$-type emitter driven by a classical light field. Two-photon correlation is much stronger in the waveguide for a driven three-level emitter (3LE) than a two-level emitter. The driven 3LE waveguide shows electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), and we investigate the scaling of EIT for one and two photons. We show that the two transmitted photons are bunched together at any distance separation when energy of the incident photons meets "two-photon resonance" criterion for EI…
The recent discovery of room temperature intrinsic single-photon emitters in silicon nitride (SiN) provides the unique opportunity for seamless monolithic integration of quantum light sources with the well-established SiN photonic platform. In this work, we develop a novel approach to realize planar waveguides made of low-autofluorescing SiN with intrinsic quantum emitters and demonstrate the single-photon emission coupling into the waveguide mode. The observed emission coupling from these emitters is found to be in line with numerical simulations. The coupling of the single-photon emission to…
We investigate the creation and control of emergent collective behavior and quantum correlations using feedback in an emitter-waveguide system using a minimal model. Employing homodyne detection of photons emitted from a laser-driven emitter ensemble into the modes of a waveguide allows to generate intricate dynamical phases. In particular, we show the emergence of a time-crystal phase, the transition to which is controlled by the feedback strength. Feedback enables furthermore the control of many-body quantum correlations, which become manifest in spin squeezing in the emitter ensemble. Devel…
Efficient on-chip integration of single-photon emitters imposes a major bottleneck for applications of photonic integrated circuits in quantum technologies. Resonantly excited solid-state emitters are emerging as near-optimal quantum light sources, if not for the lack of scalability of current devices. Current integration approaches rely on cost-inefficient individual emitter placement in photonic integrated circuits, rendering applications impossible. A promising scalable platform is based on two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. However, resonant excitation and single-photon emission of waveg…
We study theoretically two vibrating quantum emitters trapped near a one-dimensional waveguide and interacting with propagating photons. We demonstrate, that in the regime of strong optomechanical interaction the light-induced coupling of emitter vibrations can lead to formation of spatially localized vibration modes, exhibiting parity-time (PT ) symmetry breaking. These localized vibrations can be interpreted as topological defects in the quasiclassical energy spectrum.
A solid state emitter coupled to a photonic crystal cavity exhibits increased photon emission into a single frequency mode. However, current designs for photonic crystal cavities coupled to quantum emitters have three main problems: emitters are placed near surfaces that can degrade their optical properties, the cavity fluorescence cannot be collected into a single useful mode for further routing, and post-fabrication tuning is not currently possible in a stable and reversible manner for each node individually. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid cavity design with minimal fabrication of the …
We develop a self-consistent finite element method to study spontaneous emission at nanoscale proximity of plasmonic waveguides. In the model, it is assumed that only one guided mode is dominatingly excited by the quantum emitter. With such one dominating mode assumption, the cross section of the plasmonic waveguide can be arbitrary. We apply our numerical method to calculate the coupling of a quantum emitter to a cylindrical nanowire and a rectangular waveguide, and compare the cylindrical nanowire to previous work valid in quasistatic approximation. The fraction of the energy coupled to the …
We introduce two models of quasi-discrete optical systems: an array of waveguides doped by four-level N-type atoms, and a nonlinear checkerboard pattern, formed by doping with three-level atoms of the Λ-type. The dopant atoms are driven by external fields, to induce the effect of the electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT). These active systems offer advantages and addition degrees of freedom, in comparison with ordinary passive waveguiding systems. In the array of active waveguides, the driving field may adjust linear and nonlinear propagation regimes for a probe signal. The nonlinear …
We study the dynamics of single-photon absorption by a single emitter coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide that simultaneously provides channels for spontaneous emission decay and a channel for the input photon. We have developed a time-dependent theory that allows us to specify any input single-photon wavepacket guided by the waveguide as initial condition, and calculate the excitation probability of the emitter, as well as the time evolution of the transmitted and reflected field. For single-photon wavepackets with a gaussian spectrum and temporal shape, we obtain analytical solutions for …

The scattering between light and individual saturable quantum emitters can induce strong optical nonlinearities and correlations between individual light quanta. Typically, this leads to an effective attraction that can generate exotic bound states of photons, which form quantum mechanical precursors of optical solitons, as found in many optical media. Here, we study the propagation of light through an optical waveguide that is chirally coupled to three-level quantum emitters. We show that the additional laser-coupling to a third emitter state not only permits to control the properties of the …
A recursive scheme for the design of scatterers acting simultaneously as emitters and absorbers, such as lasers and coherent perfect absorbers in optics, at multiple prescribed frequencies is proposed. The approach is based on the assembly of non-Hermitian emitter and absorber units into self-dual emitter-absorber trimers at different composition levels, exploiting the simple structure of the corresponding transfer matrices. In particular, lifting the restriction to parity-time-symmetric setups enables the realization of emitter and absorber action at distinct frequencies and provides flexibil…
We study theoretically the spatial distribution of the polarizations in the array of resonant electromagnetic dipole emitters coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. The ratchet effect manifests itself in the spatial asymmetry of the distribution of the emitter occupations along the array under symmetrical pumping from both sides. The occupation asymmetry is driven by the periodic modulation in time of the emitter resonance frequencies. We find numerically and analytically the optimal conditions for maximal asymmetry. We also demonstrate that the ratchet effect can be enhanced due to the forma…
Sorting quantum fields into different modes according to their Fock-space quantum numbers is a highly desirable quantum operation. In this Letter, we show that a pair of two-level emitters, chirally coupled to a waveguide, may scatter single- and two-photon components of an input pulse into orthogonal temporal modes with a fidelity $\gtrsim 0.9997$. We develop a general theory to characterize and optimize this process and observe an interesting dynamics in the two-photon scattering regime: while the first emitter gives rise to a complex multimode field, the second emitter recombines the field …
We show, via simulations, that an optical fiber taper waveguide can be an efficient tool for photoluminescence and resonant, extinction spectroscopy of single emitters, such as molecules or colloidal quantum dots, deposited on the surface of a thin dielectric membrane. Placed over a high refractive index membrane, a tapered fiber waveguide induces the formation of hybrid mode waves, akin to dielectric slotted waveguide modes, that provide strong field confinement in the low index gap region. The availability of such gap-confined waves yields potentially high spontaneous emission enhancement fa…
We propose and theoretically investigate a model to realize cascaded optical nonlinearity with few atoms and photons in one-dimension (1D). The optical nonlinearity in our system is mediated by resonant interactions of photons with two-level emitters, such as atoms or quantum dots in a 1D photonic waveguide. Multi-photon transmission in the waveguide is nonreciprocal when the emitters have different transition energies. Our theory provides a clear physical understanding of the origin of nonreciprocity in the presence of cascaded nonlinearity. We show how various two-photon nonlinear effects in…
Slow light with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the core of cylindrical waveguide (CW) for an optical fiber system containing three-level atoms is investigated. The CW modes are treated in the weakly guiding approximation which renders the analysis into manageable form. The transparency window and permittivity profile of the waveguide due to the strong pump field in the EIT scheme is calculated. For a specific permittivity profile of the waveguide due to EIT, the propagation constant of the weak signal field and spatial shape of fundamental guided mode are calculated by solvi…
Interfacing single emitters and photonic nanostructures enables modifying their emission properties, such as enhancing individual decay rates or controlling the emission direction. To achieve full control, the single emitter must be positioned in the nanostructures deterministically. Here, we use spectroscopy to gain spectral and spatial information about individual quantum dots in order to position each emitter in a pre-determined location in a unit cell of a photonic-crystal waveguide. Depending on the spatial and spectral positioning within the structured nanophotonic mode, we observe that …
In this work, we propose an approach for the design of a waveguide structure that allows for efficient and highly asymmetric coupling of the quantum sources with circularly polarized transition dipole moments to the guided mode of the structure. The approach is based on the mixing of the two quasi-degenerate modes of a periodic waveguide with an auxiliary single-mode waveguide leading to the formation of the dispersion with a stationary inflection point and consequently to the high coupling efficiency of this mode with a dipole source. We show that the distribution of the field polarization in…
Scalable quantum technologies require faithful conversion between matter qubits storing the quantum information and photonic qubits carrying the information in integrated circuits and waveguides. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic field chirality which arises in nanophotonic waveguides leads to unidirectional emission from an embedded quantum dot quantum emitter, with resultant in-plane transfer of matter-qubit (spin) information. The chiral behavior occurs despite the non-chiral geometry and material of the waveguides. Using dot registration techniques we achieve a quantum emitter determ…
In this article, we examine plasmon induced transparency (PIT) effect in a parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) comprising of two similar pyramidal shaped grooves. One of the grooves is filled with air, while the other is filled with a dielectric material whose refractive index can be varied. The resonant frequencies corresponding to the air and dielectric grooves in the proposed configuration results in the transparency window which can be modulated with the refractive index of the dielectric material. The approach provides flexibility to actively control transparency effect in a waveguide configu…
Spin-dependent, directional light-matter interactions form the basis of chiral quantum networks. In the solid state, quantum emitters commonly possess circularly polarised optical transitions with spin-dependent handedness. We demonstrate numerically that spin-dependent chiral coupling can be realised by embedding such an emitter in a waveguide-coupled nanocavity, which supports two near-degenerate, orthogonally-polarised cavity modes. The chiral behaviour arises due to direction-dependent interference between the cavity modes upon coupling to two single-mode output waveguides. Notably, an exp…
Interfacing solid-state emitters with photonic structures is a key strategy for developing highly efficient photonic quantum technologies. Such structures are often organised into two distinct categories: nanocavities and waveguides. However, any realistic nanocavity structure simultaneously has characteristics of both a cavity and waveguide, which is particularly pronounced when the cavity is constructed using low-reflectivity mirrors in a waveguide structure with good transverse light confinement. In this regime, standard cavity quantum optics theory breaks down, as the waveguide character o…
We determine the optical response of a thin and dense layer of interacting quantum emitters. We show that in such a dense system, the Lorentz redshift and the associated interaction broadening can be used to control the transmission and reflection spectra. In the presence of overlapping resonances, a Dipole-Induced Electromagnetic Transparency (DIET) regime, similar to Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT), may be achieved. DIET relies on destructive interference between the electromagnetic waves emitted by quantum emitters. Carefully tuning material parameters allows to achieve narro…

The first part of the manuscript dealswith several applications of optical nanofibers as a platform for light-matter interaction. In particular we will explore: thecoupling between a dipole placed on the surface of the nanofiber; the coupling between two parallel nanofibers; as well asthe mechanical properties of an optical nanofiber. In the second part of the manuscript, we will focus on solving tw…
As an analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has been realized both in plasmonic metamaterial and waveguide structures. Via near-field coupling within unit cells, PIT with broadband could be produced by plasmonic metamaterials, which, however, has not been realized in on-chip plasmonic waveguide structures. Here, we introduce broadband PIT based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Utilizing the direct coupling structure, PIT emerges based on an easy-fabricated structure without gap. By tuning coupling distance, th…
Nanoscale generation of individual photons in confined geometries is an exciting research field aiming at exploiting localized electromagnetic fields for light manipulation. One of the outstanding challenges of photonic systems combining emitters with nanostructured media is the selective channelling of photons emitted by embedded sources into specific optical modes and their transport at distant locations in integrated systems. Here, we show that soft-matter nanofibers, electrospun with embedded emitters, combine subwavelength field localization and large broadband near-field coupling with lo…
