Estimating a mesh from an unordered set of sparse, noisy 3D points is a challenging problem that requires carefully selected priors. Existing hand-crafted priors, such as smoothness regularizers, impose an undesirable trade-off between attenuating noise and preserving local detail. Recent deep-learning approaches produce impressive results by learning priors directly from the data. However, the priors are learned at the object level, which makes these algorithms class-specific and even sensitive to the pose of the object. We introduce meshlets, small patches of mesh that we use to learn local shape priors. Meshlets act as a dictionary of local features and thus allow to use learned priors to reconstruct object meshes in any pose and from unseen classes, even when the noise is large and the samples sparse.

We present MeshLeTemp, a powerful method for 3D human pose and mesh reconstruction from a single image. In terms of human body priors encoding, we propose using a learnable template human mesh instead of a constant template as utilized by previous state-of-the-art methods. The proposed learnable template reflects not only vertex-vertex interactions but also the human pose and body shape, being able to adapt to diverse images. We conduct extensive experiments to show the generalizability of our method on unseen scenarios.

In this paper we propose a new approach to incrementally initialize a manifold surface for automatic 3D reconstruction from images. More precisely we focus on the automatic initialization of a 3D mesh as close as possible to the final solution; indeed many approaches require a good initial solution for further refinement via multi-view stereo techniques. Our novel algorithm automatically estimates an initial manifold mesh for surface evolving multi-view stereo algorithms, where the manifold property needs to be enforced. It bootstraps from 3D points extracted via Structure from Motion, then it…
Traditional methods of reconstructing 3D human pose and mesh from single images rely on paired image-mesh datasets, which can be difficult and expensive to obtain. Due to this limitation, model scalability is constrained as well as reconstruction performance. Towards addressing the challenge, we introduce Mesh Pre-Training (MPT), an effective pre-training strategy that leverages large amounts of MoCap data to effectively perform pre-training at scale. We introduce the use of MoCap-generated heatmaps as input representations to the mesh regression transformer and propose a Masked Heatmap Modeli…
3D hand-mesh reconstruction from RGB images facilitates many applications, including augmented reality (AR). However, this requires not only real-time speed and accurate hand pose and shape but also plausible mesh-image alignment. While existing works already achieve promising results, meeting all three requirements is very challenging. This paper presents a novel pipeline by decoupling the hand-mesh reconstruction task into three stages: a joint stage to predict hand joints and segmentation; a mesh stage to predict a rough hand mesh; and a refine stage to fine-tune it with an offset mesh for …

This paper introduces a novel framework called DTNet for 3D mesh reconstruction and generation via Disentangled Topology. Beyond previous works, we learn a topology-aware neural template specific to each input then deform the template to reconstruct a detailed mesh while preserving the learned topology. One key insight is to decouple the complex mesh reconstruction into two sub-tasks: topology formulation and shape deformation. Thanks to the decoupling, DT-Net implicitly learns a disentangled representation for the topology and shape in the latent space. Hence, it can enable novel disentangled…
Nonparametric approaches have shown promising results on reconstructing 3D human mesh from a single monocular image. Unlike previous approaches that use a parametric human model like skinned multi-person linear model (SMPL), and attempt to regress the model parameters, nonparametric approaches relax the heavy reliance on the parametric space. However, existing nonparametric methods require ground truth meshes as their regression target for each vertex, and obtaining ground truth mesh labels is very expensive. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to learn human mesh reconstruction without…
We present a new method, called MEsh TRansfOrmer (METRO), to reconstruct 3D human pose and mesh vertices from a single image. Our method uses a transformer encoder to jointly model vertex-vertex and vertex-joint interactions, and outputs 3D joint coordinates and mesh vertices simultaneously. Compared to existing techniques that regress pose and shape parameters, METRO does not rely on any parametric mesh models like SMPL, thus it can be easily extended to other objects such as hands. We further relax the mesh topology and allow the transformer self-attention mechanism to freely attend between …
Monocular 3D reconstruction is to reconstruct the shape of object and its other information from a single RGB image. In 3D reconstruction, polygon mesh, with detailed surface information and low computational cost, is the most prevalent expression form obtained from deep learning models. However, the state-of-the-art schemes fail to directly generate well-structured meshes, and we identify that most meshes have severe Vertices Clustering (VC) and Illegal Twist (IT) problems. By analyzing the mesh deformation process, we pinpoint that the inappropriate usage of Chamfer Distance (CD) loss is a r…

Semantic reconstruction of indoor scenes refers to both scene understanding and object reconstruction. Existing works either address one part of this problem or focus on independent objects. In this paper, we bridge the gap between understanding and reconstruction, and propose an end-to-end solution to jointly reconstruct room layout, object bounding boxes and meshes from a single image. Instead of separately resolving scene understanding and object reconstruction, our method builds upon a holistic scene context and proposes a coarse-to-fine hierarchy with three components: 1. room layout with…

We introduce a simple and effective network architecture for monocular 3D hand pose estimation consisting of an image encoder followed by a mesh convolutional decoder that is trained through a direct 3D hand mesh reconstruction loss. We train our network by gathering a large-scale dataset of hand action in YouTube videos and use it as a source of weak supervision. Our weakly-supervised mesh convolutions-based system largely outperforms state-of-the-art methods, even halving the errors on the in the wild benchmark. Non-parametric mesh reconstruction has recently shown significant progress in 3D hand and body applications. In these methods, mesh vertices and edges are visible to neural networks, enabling the possibility to establish a direct mapping between 2D image pixels and 3D mesh vertices. In this paper, we seek to establish and exploit this mapping with a simple and compact architecture. The network is designed with these considerations: 1) aggregating both local 2D image features from the encoder and 3D geometric features captured in the mesh decoder; 2) decoding coarse-to-fine meshes along the dec…

Recovering a textured 3D mesh from a monocular image is highly challenging, particularly for in-the-wild objects that lack 3D ground truths. In this work, we present MeshInversion, a novel framework to improve the reconstruction by exploiting the generative prior of a 3D GAN pre-trained for 3D textured mesh synthesis. Reconstruction is achieved by searching for a latent space in the 3D GAN that best resembles the target mesh in accordance with the single view observation. Since the pre-trained GAN encapsulates rich 3D semantics in terms of mesh geometry and texture, searching within the GAN ma…

Semantic scene reconstruction from point cloud is an essential and challenging task for 3D scene understanding. This task requires not only to recognize each instance in the scene, but also to recover their geometries based on the partial observed point cloud. Existing methods usually attempt to directly predict occupancy values of the complete object based on incomplete point cloud proposals from a detection-based backbone. However, this framework always fails to reconstruct high fidelity mesh due to the obstruction of various detected false positive object proposals and the ambiguity of inco…

Reconstructing the 3D mesh of a general object from a single image is now possible thanks to the latest advances of deep learning technologies. However, due to the nontrivial difficulty of generating a feasible mesh structure, the state-of-the-art approaches often simplify the problem by learning the displacements of a template mesh that deforms it to the target surface. Though reconstructing a 3D shape with complex topology can be achieved by deforming multiple mesh patches, it remains difficult to stitch the results to ensure a high meshing quality. In this paper, we present an end-to-end si…

Monocular 3D reconstruction of deformable objects, such as human body parts, has been typically approached by predicting parameters of heavyweight linear models. In this paper, we demonstrate an alternative solution that is based on the idea of encoding images into a latent non-linear representation of meshes. The prior on 3D hand shapes is learned by training an autoencoder with intrinsic graph convolutions performed in the spectral domain. The pre-trained decoder acts as a non-linear statistical deformable model. The latent parameters that reconstruct the shape and articulated pose of hands …

Even though 3D face reconstruction has achieved impressive progress, most orthogonal projection-based face reconstruction methods can not achieve accurate and consistent reconstruction results when the face is very close to the camera due to the distortion under the perspective projection. In this paper, we propose to simultaneously reconstruct 3D face mesh in the world space and predict 2D face landmarks on the image plane to address the problem of perspective 3D face reconstruction. Based on the predicted 3D vertices and 2D landmarks, the 6DoF (6 Degrees of Freedom) face pose can be easily e…

This paper presents an algorithm to reconstruct temporally consistent 3D meshes of deformable object instances from videos in the wild. Without requiring annotations of 3D mesh, 2D keypoints, or camera pose for each video frame, we pose video-based reconstruction as a self-supervised online adaptation problem applied to any incoming test video. We first learn a category-specific 3D reconstruction model from a collection of single-view images of the same category that jointly predicts the shape, texture, and camera pose of an image. Then, at inference time, we adapt the model to a test video ov…
We present a new multi-stream 3D mesh reconstruction network (MSMR-Net) for hand pose estimation from a single RGB image. Our model consists of an image encoder followed by a mesh-convolution decoder composed of connected graph convolution layers. In contrast to previous models that form a single mesh decoding path, our decoder network incorporates multiple cross-resolution trajectories that are executed in parallel. Thus, global and local information are shared to form rich decoding representations at minor additional parameter cost compared to the single trajectory network. We demonstrate th…
Fueled by the power of deep learning techniques and implicit shape learning, recent advances in single-image human digitalization have reached unprecedented accuracy and could recover fine-grained surface details such as garment wrinkles. However, a common problem for the implicit-based methods is that they cannot produce separated and topology-consistent mesh for each garment piece, which is crucial for the current 3D content creation pipeline. To address this issue, we proposed a novel geometry inference framework ReEF that reconstructs topology-consistent layered garment mesh by registering…

This paper considers a new problem of adapting a pre-trained model of human mesh reconstruction to out-of-domain streaming videos. However, most previous methods based on the parametric SMPL model \cite{loper2015smpl} underperform in new domains with unexpected, domain-specific attributes, such as camera parameters, lengths of bones, backgrounds, and occlusions. Our general idea is to dynamically fine-tune the source model on test video streams with additional temporal constraints, such that it can mitigate the domain gaps without over-fitting the 2D information of individual test frames. A su…
Current 6D object pose methods consist of deep CNN models fully optimized for a single object but with its architecture standardized among objects with different shapes. In contrast to previous works, we explicitly exploit each object's distinct topological information i.e. 3D dense meshes in the pose estimation model, with an automated process and prior to any post-processing refinement stage. In order to achieve this, we propose a learning framework in which a Graph Convolutional Neural Network reconstructs a pose conditioned 3D mesh of the object. A robust estimation of the allocentric orie…
We present a novel approach to reconstruct RGB-D indoor scene with plane primitives. Our approach takes as input a RGB-D sequence and a dense coarse mesh reconstructed by some 3D reconstruction method on the sequence, and generate a lightweight, low-polygonal mesh with clear face textures and sharp features without losing geometry details from the original scene. To achieve this, we firstly partition the input mesh with plane primitives, simplify it into a lightweight mesh next, then optimize plane parameters, camera poses and texture colors to maximize the photometric consistency across frame…

Human reconstruction and synthesis from monocular RGB videos is a challenging problem due to clothing, occlusion, texture discontinuities and sharpness, and framespecific pose changes. Many methods employ deferred rendering, NeRFs and implicit methods to represent clothed humans, on the premise that mesh-based representations cannot capture complex clothing and textures from RGB, silhouettes, and keypoints alone. We provide a counter viewpoint to this fundamental premise by optimizing a SMPL+D mesh and an efficient, multi-resolution texture representation using only RGB images, binary silhouet…

Specifically, for 2D encoding, we propose lightweight yet effective stacked structures. Regarding 3D decoding, we provide an efficient graph operator, namely depth-separable spiral convolution. Moreover, we present a novel feature lifting module for bridging the gap between 2D and 3D representations. We present a novel framework for mesh reconstruction from unstructured point clouds by taking advantage of the learned visibility of the 3D points in the virtual views and traditional graph-cut based mesh generation. Specifically, we first propose a three-step network that explicitly employs depth completion for visibility prediction. Then the visibility information of multiple views is aggregated to generate a 3D mesh model by solving an optimization problem considering visibility in which a novel adaptive visibility weighting in surface determination is also introduced to suppress line of si…

We address the problem of mesh reconstruction from live RGB-D video, assuming a calibrated camera and poses provided externally (e.g., by a SLAM system). In contrast to most existing approaches, we do not fuse depth measurements in a volume but in a dense surfel cloud. We asynchronously (re)triangulate the smoothed surfels to reconstruct a surface mesh. This novel approach enables to maintain a dense surface representation of the scene during SLAM which can quickly adapt to loop closures. This is possible by deforming the surfel cloud and asynchronously remeshing the surface where necessary. T…

Rendering is the process of generating 2D images from 3D assets, simulated in a virtual environment, typically with a graphics pipeline. By inverting such renderer, one can think of a learning approach to predict a 3D shape from an input image. However, standard rendering pipelines involve a fundamental discretization step called rasterization, which prevents the rendering process to be differentiable, hence suitable for learning. We present the first non-parametric and truly differentiable rasterizer based on silhouettes. Our method enables unsupervised learning for high-quality 3D mesh recon…
In this paper, we aim to reconstruct a full 3D human shape from a single image. Previous vertex-level and parameter regression approaches reconstruct 3D human shape based on a pre-defined adjacency matrix to encode positive relations between nodes. The deep topological relations for the surface of the 3D human body are not carefully exploited. Moreover, the performance of most existing approaches often suffer from domain gap when handling more occlusion cases in real-world scenes. In this work, we propose a Deep Mesh Relation Capturing Graph Convolution Network, DC-GNet, with a shape completio…
Much progress has been made in the supervised learning of 3D reconstruction of rigid objects from multi-view images or a video. However, it is more challenging to reconstruct severely deformed objects from a single-view RGB image in an unsupervised manner. Although training-based methods, such as specific category-level training, have been shown to successfully reconstruct rigid objects and slightly deformed objects like birds from a single-view image, they cannot effectively handle severely deformed objects and neither can be applied to some downstream tasks in the real world due to the incon…

One challenge that remains open in 3D deep learning is how to efficiently represent 3D data to feed deep networks. Recent works have relied on volumetric or point cloud representations, but such approaches suffer from a number of issues such as computational complexity, unordered data, and lack of finer geometry. This paper demonstrates that a mesh representation (i.e. vertices and faces to form polygonal surfaces) is able to capture fine-grained geometry for 3D reconstruction tasks. A mesh however is also unstructured data similar to point clouds. We address this problem by proposing a learni…
