Gravitational-wave detectors on earth have detected gravitational waves from merging compact objects in the local Universe. In future we will detect gravitational waves from higher-redshift sources, which trace the high-redshift structure formation history. That is, by observing high-redshift gravitational-wave events we will be able to probe structure formation history. This will provide additional insight into the early Universe when primordial fluctuations are generated and also into the nature of dark matter.
In this paper, using and implementing a new line of sight CMB code, called CMBAns [1], that allows us to modify H(z) for any given feature at any redshift we study the effect of changes in the expansion history of the Universe on the CMB power spectrum. Motivated by the detailed analytical calculations of the effects of the changes in H(z) on ISW plateau and CMB low multipoles, we study two phenomenological parametric form of the expansion history using WMAP data and through MCMC analysis. Our MCMC analysis shows that the standard LCDM cosmological model is consistent with the CMB data allowin…
The cause for the observed acceleration in the expansion of the universe is unknown, and referred to as "dark energy" for convenience. Dark energy could be an unknown energy component, or a modification of Einstein's general relativity. This dictates the measurements that are optimal in unveiling the nature of dark energy: the cosmic expansion history, and the growth history of cosmic large scale structure. I will examine Type Ia supernovae and galaxy clustering as dark energy probes, and discuss recent results and future prospects.
We investigate the utility of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and the red giant branch (RGB) as probes of the star formation history (SFH) of the nearby (D=2.5 Mpc) dwarf irregular galaxy, KKH 98. Near-infrared (IR) Keck Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (AO) images resolve 592 IR bright stars reaching over 1 magnitude below the Tip of the Red Giant Branch. Significantly deeper optical (F475W and F814W) Hubble Space Telescope images of the same field contain over 2500 stars, reaching to the Red Clump and the Main Sequence turn-off for 0.5 Gyr old populations. Compared to the optical color mag…
We investigate the use of the halo mass-gap statistic --- defined as the logarithmic difference in mass between the host halo and its most massive satellite subhalo --- as a probe of halo age and concentration. A cosmological N-body simulation is used to study N ~25, 000 group/cluster sized halos in the mass range 10^12.5 < M_halo/M_sol < 10^14.5. In agreement with previous work, we find that halo mass-gap is related to halo formation time and concentration. On average, older and more highly concentrated halos have larger halo mass-gaps, and this trend is stronger than the mass-concentration r…
Motivated by the current constraints on the epoch of reionisation from recent cosmic microwave background observations, ionising background measurements of star-forming galaxies, and low redshifts line-of-sight probes, we propose a new data-motivated parameterisation of the history of the average ionisation fraction. This parameterisation describes a flexible redshift-asymmetric reionisation process in two regimes that is capable of fitting all the current constraints.
Multiple astrophysical probes of the cosmic star formation history yield widely different inferences of this rate at redshifts z > 1. While all probes seem to indicate a period of peak star formation known as the cosmic noon between 1.5 < z < 3, the detailed inferences from these probes are in disagreement. In particular, the magnitude of the peak star formation rate density indicated by H-alpha data is higher by a factor of ~ 4 compared to the magnitude of the peak indicated by UV/IR data. In this work, we explore the potential of future measurements of the diffuse supernova neutrino backgrou…
The cosmic thermal history, quantified by the evolution of the mean thermal energy density in the universe, is driven by the growth of structures as baryons get shock heated in collapsing dark matter halos. This process can be probed by redshift-dependent amplitudes of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect background. To do so, we cross-correlate eight sky intensity maps in the $\it{Planck}$ and Infrared Astronomical Satellite missions with two million spectroscopic redshift references in the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys. This delivers snapshot spectra for the far-infrared to microwave backgr…
The scalar perturbation induced gravitational waves are a probe of the primordial density perturbation spectrum on small scales. In this paper, we show that they can also probe the thermal history of the universe. We assume the universe underwent a stage with a constant equation of state parameter $w$, followed by the radiation-dominated stage of the conventional big bang universe. We find that the infrared slope of the power spectrum of the induced stochastic gravitational wave background for decelerating cosmologies is related to the equation of state of the universe. Furthermore, the induce…
We consider the information that can be derived about massive black-hole binary populations and their formation history solely from current and possible future pulsar timing array (PTA) results. We use models of the stochastic gravitational-wave background from circular massive black hole binaries with chirp mass in the range $10^6 - 10^{11} M_\odot$ evolving solely due to radiation reaction. Our parameterised models for the black hole merger history make only weak assumptions about the properties of the black holes merging over cosmic time. We show that current PTA results place an upper limi…
Since Hubble and Lamaitre's discovery of the expanding universe using galaxies till the recent discovery of the accelerating universe using standard candles, direct measurements of the evolution of the scale factor of the universe a(t) have played central roles in establishing the standard model of cosmology. In this letter, we show that such a measurement may be extended to the primordial universe using massive fields as standard clocks, providing a direct evidence for the scenario responsible for the Big Bang. This is a short and non-technical introduction to the idea of classical and quantu…
We test with gravitational lensing data the dark matter (DM) halos embedding the luminous baryonic component of galaxy clusters; our benchmark is provided by their two-stage cosmogonical development that we compute with its variance, and by the related 'α-profiles' we derive. The latter solve the Jeans equation for the self-gravitating, anisotropic DM equilibria, and yield the radial runs of the density ρ(r) and the velocity dispersion σ_r^2(r) in terms of the DM 'entropy' K = σ_r^2/ρ^(2/3) ~ r^(α) highlighted by recent N-body simulations; the former constrains the slope to the narrow range α~…
As a candidate of dark matter, primordial black holes (PBHs) have attracted more and more attentions as they could be possible progenitors of the heavy binary black holes (BBHs) observed by LIGO/Virgo. Accurately estimating the merger rate of PBH binaries will be crucial to reconstruct the mass distribution of PBHs. It was pointed out the merger history of PBHs may shift the merger rate distribution depending on the mass function of PBHs. In this paper, we use 10 BBH events from LIGO/Virgo O1 and O2 observing runs to constrain the merger rate distribution of PBHs by accounting the effect of me…
Despite decades of effort, the timing and duration of He II reionization, as well as its morphology and the properties of the quasars believed to drive it, are still not well constrained. In this paper we present a new method to study both He II reionization and quasars via the thermal proximity effect -- the photoelectric heating of the intergalactic medium around quasars when their hard radiation doubly ionizes helium. We post-process a SPH simulation with 1D radiative calculations, and study how the thermal proximity effect depends on the amount of singly ionized helium, $x_{\rm HeII,0}$, w…
The cosmic expansion history, mapped by the Hubble parameter as a function of redshift, offers the most direct probe of the dark energy equation of state. One way to determine the Hubble parameter at different redshifts is essentially differentiating the cosmic age or distance with respect to redshift, which may incur large numerical errors with observational data. Taking the scenario that the Hubble parameter increases monotonically with redshift as a reasonable prior, we propose to enforce the monotonicity when reconstructing the Hubble parameter at a series of redshifts. Tests with mock typ…
Binary pulsars can be excellent probes of ultra-light dark matter. We consider the scenario where the latter is represented by a spin-2 field. The coherent oscillations of the dark matter field perturb the dynamics of binary systems, leading to secular effects for masses that resonate with the binary systems. For the range $10^{-23}$eV $\lesssim m \lesssim 10^{-17}$eV we show that current timing data could potentially constrain the universal coupling strength of dark matter to ordinary matter at the level of $α\simeq 10^{-5}$.
We present measurements of both scale- and time-dependent deviations from the standard gravitational field equations. These late-time modifications are introduced separately for relativistic and non-relativistic particles, by way of the parameters $G_{\rm matter}(k,z)$ and $G_{\rm light}(k,z)$ using two bins in both scale and time, with transition wavenumber $0.01$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and redshift 1. We emphasize the use of two dynamical probes to constrain this set of parameters, galaxy power spectrum multipoles and the direct peculiar velocity power spectrum, which probe fluctuations on different sca…
We forecast the expected cosmological constraints from a combination of probes of both the universal expansion rate and matter perturbation growth, in the form of weak lensing tomography, galaxy tomography, supernovae, and the cosmic microwave background incorporating all cross-correlations between the observables for an extensive cosmological parameter set. We allow for non-zero curvature and parameterize our ignorance of the early universe by allowing for a non-negligible fraction of dark energy (DE) at high redshifts. We find that early DE density can be constrained to 0.2% of the critical …
I review work on modelling the infrared and submillimetre SEDs of galaxies. The underlying physical assumptions are discussed and spherically symmetric, axisymmetric, and 3-dimensional radiative transfer codes are reviewed. Models for galaxies with Spitzer IRS data and for galaxies in the Herschel-Hermes survey are discussed. Searches for high redshift infrared and submillimetre galaxies, the star formation history, the evolution of dust extinction, and constraints from source-counts, are briefly discussed.
This paper summarises the potential of the LISA mission to constrain the expansion history of the universe using massive black hole binary mergers as gravitational wave standard sirens. After briefly reviewing the concept of standard siren, the analysis and methodologies of Ref. [1] are briefly outlined to show how LISA can be used as a cosmological probe, while a selection of results taken from Refs. [1,2] is presented in order to estimate the power of LISA in constraining cosmological parameters.
Inferring high-fidelity constraints on the spatial curvature parameter, $Ω_{\rm K}$, under as few assumptions as possible, is of fundamental importance in cosmology. We propose a method to non-parametrically infer $Ω_{\rm K}$ from late-Universe probes alone. Using Gaussian Processes (GP) to reconstruct the expansion history, we combine Cosmic Chronometers (CC) and Type Ia Supernovae (SNe~Ia) data to infer constraints on curvature, marginalized over the expansion history, calibration of the CC and SNe~Ia data, and the GP hyper-parameters. The obtained constraints on $Ω_{\rm K}$ are free from pa…
We study the dynamical structure of a bimodal galaxy cluster Abell 3653 at z=0.1089 by using combined optical and X-ray data. Observations include archival data from Anglo-Australian Telescope and X-ray observatories of XMM-Newton and Chandra. We draw a global picture for A3653 using galaxy density, X-ray luminosity and temperature maps. Galaxy distribution has a regular morphological shape at the 3 Mpc size. Galaxy density map shows an elongation EW direction, which perfectly aligns with the extended diffuse X-ray emission. We detect two dominant grouping around two brightest cluster galaxies…
The thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect contains information about the thermal history of the universe, observable in maps of the Compton $y$ parameter; however, it does not contain information about the redshift of the sources. Recent papers have utilized a tomographic approach, cross-correlating the Compton $y$ map with the locations of galaxies with known redshift, in order to deproject the signal along the line of sight. In this paper, we test the validity and accuracy of this tomographic approach to probe the thermal history of the universe. We use the state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodyna…
Quasars are the most luminous non-transient sources in the epoch of cosmological reionization (i.e., which ended a billion years after the Big Bang, corresponding to a redshift of z ~ 5), and are powerful probes of the inter-galactic medium at that time. This review covers current efforts to identify high-redshift quasars and how they have been used to constrain the reionization history. This includes a full description of the various processes by which neutral hydrogen atoms can absorb/scatter ultraviolet photons, and which lead to the Gunn-Peterson effect, dark gap and dark pixel analyses, q…
We present a new technique for empirically calibrating how the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of X-ray binary (XRB) populations evolves following a star-formation event. We first utilize detailed stellar population synthesis modeling of far-UV to far-IR photometry of the nearby face-on spiral galaxy M51 to construct maps of the star-formation histories (SFHs) on subgalactic (~400 pc) scales. Next, we use the ~850 ks cumulative Chandra exposure of M51 to identify and isolate 2-7 keV detected point sources within the galaxy, and we use our SFH maps to recover the local properties of the stellar…
We present a five-band Herschel study (100-500um) of three galaxy clusters at z~1.2 from the Spitzer Adaptation of the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (SpARCS). With a sample of 120 spectroscopically-confirmed cluster members, we investigate the role of environment on galaxy properties utilizing the projected cluster phase space (line-of-sight velocity versus clustercentric radius), which probes the time-averaged galaxy density to which a galaxy has been exposed. We divide cluster galaxies into phase-space bins of (r/r200) x (v/sigma_v), tracing a sequence of accretion histories in phase space. St…
The standard model of cosmology is underpinned by the assumption of the statistical isotropy of the Universe. Observations of the cosmic microwave background, galaxy distributions, and supernovae, among other media, support the assumption of isotropy at scales $\gtrsim 100$\,Mpc. The recent detections of gravitational waves from merging stellar-mass binary black holes provide a new probe of anisotropy; complementary and independent of all other probes of the matter distribution in the Universe. We present an analysis using a spherical harmonic model to determine the level of anisotropy in the …
In the near future, the redshift drift observations in optical and radio bands will provide precise measurements on $H(z)$ covering the redshift ranges of $2<z<5$ and $0<z<0.3$. In addition, gravitational wave (GW) standard siren observations could make measurements on the dipole anisotropy of luminosity distance, which will also provide the $H(z)$ measurements in the redshift range of $0<z<3$. In this work, we propose a multi-messenger and multi-wavelength observational strategy to measure $H(z)$ based on the three next-generation projects, E-ELT, SKA, and DECIGO, and we wish to see whether t…
We consider redshift drift in a general space-time as expressed in terms of physically interpretable multipole series. An important realisation from the derived results is that redshift drift cannot in general be thought of as a direct probe of the average expansion rate of the Universe due to the presence of structure along the light beams from the astrophysical sources to the observer. We also predict the general presence of a dipolar and a quadrupolar offset in the detection of redshift drift for observers placed in locally anisotropic environments.
As a binary pulsar moves through a wind of dark matter particles, the resulting dynamical friction modifies the binary's orbit. We study this effect for the double disk dark matter (DDDM) scenario, where a fraction of the dark matter is dissipative and settles into a thin disk. For binaries within the dark disk, this effect is enhanced due to the higher dark matter density and lower velocity dispersion of the dark disk, and due to its co-rotation with the baryonic disk.We estimate the effect and compare it with observations for two different limits in the Knudsen number ($Kn$). First, in the c…
The massive black holes we observe in galaxies today are the natural end-product of a complex evolutionary path, in which black holes seeded in proto-galaxies at high redshift grow through cosmic history via a sequence of mergers and accretion episodes. Electromagnetic observations probe a small subset of the population of massive black holes (namely, those that are active or those that are very close to us), but planned space-based gravitational-wave observatories such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) can measure the parameters of ``electromagnetically invisible'' massive blac…
Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are recently discovered extra-galactic radio transients which are now used as novel cosmological probes. We show how the Bursts' Dispersion Measure can model-independently probe the history of Hydrogen reionization. Using a FlexKnot free-form parameterization to reconstruct the reionization history we predict an 11% accuracy constraint on the CMB optical depth, and 4% accuracy on the midpoint of reionization, to be achieved with 100 FRBs originating from redshifts z>5.
We present a new set of weak-line abundances of HII regions in M81, based on Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) observations. The aim is to derive plasma and abundance analysis for a sizable set of emission-line targets to study the galactic chemical contents in the framework of galactic metallicity gradients. We used the weak-line abundance approach by deriving electron density and temperatures for several HII regions in M81. Gradient analysis is based on oxygen abundances.Together with a set of HII region abundances determined similarly by us with Multi-Mirror Telescope (MMT) spectra, t…
Strong gravitational lensing of gravitational wave sources offers a novel probe of both the lens galaxy and the binary source population. In particular, the strong lensing event rate and the time delay distribution of multiply-imaged gravitational-wave binary coalescence events can be used to constrain the mass distribution of the lenses as well as the intrinsic properties of the source population. We calculate the strong lensing event rate for a range of second (2G) and third generation (3G) detectors, including Advanced LIGO/Virgo, A+, Einstein Telescope (ET), and Cosmic Explorer (CE). For 3…
We consider the thermal effects into the evaluation of the dark matter production process. With the assistance of the right handed neutrinos, the freeze-in massive particle dark matter production history can be modified by the two-step phase transitions. The kinematic of decay/inverse decay or annihilation processes can be affected by the finite temperature effects as the Universe cools down. The history of the symmetry respected by the model can be revealed by the DM relic abundance evolution processes. The strong first order electroweak phase transition generated gravitational waves can be p…
Recent measurements from the CMB and from high-redshift galaxy observations have placed rough constraints on the midpoint and duration of the Epoch of Reionization. Detailed measurements of the ionization history remain elusive, although two proposed probes show great promise for this purpose: the 21cm global signal and the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. We formally confirm the common assumption that these two probes are highly complementary, with the kSZ being more sensitive to extended ionization histories and the global signal to rapidly evolving ones. We do so by performing a Kar…
The Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) traces the emission of star-forming galaxies throughout all cosmic epochs. Breaking down the contribution from galaxies at different redshifts to the observed CIB maps would allow us to probe the history of star formation. In this paper, we cross-correlate maps of the CIB with galaxy samples covering the range $z\lesssim2$ to measure the bias-weighted star-formation rate (SFR) density $\langle bρ_{\rm SFR}\rangle$ as a function of time in a model independent way. This quantity is complementary to direct measurements of the SFR density $ρ_{\rm SFR}$, giving …
Given that the reionization history of cosmic hydrogen is yet to be stringently constrained, it is worth checking the prospects of doing so using physically motivated models and available observational data. For this purpose, we use an extended version of the explicitly photon-conserving semi-numerical model of reionization, $\texttt{SCRIPT}$, which also includes thermal evolution of the intergalactic medium (IGM). The model incorporates the effects of inhomogeneous recombination and radiative feedback self-consistently and is characterized by five free parameters (two for the redshift-depende…
We investigate the gravitational wave background from a first order phase transition in a matter-dominated universe, and show that it has a unique feature from which important information about the properties of the phase transition and thermal history of the universe can be easily extracted. Also, we discuss the inverse problem of such a gravitational wave background in view of the degeneracy among macroscopic parameters governing the signal.
Understanding infrared (IR) luminosity is fundamental to understanding the cosmic star formation history and AGN evolution, since their most intense stages are often obscured by dust. Japanese infrared satellite, AKARI, provided unique data sets to probe this both at low and high redshifts. The AKARI performed all sky survey in 6 IR bands (9, 18, 65, 90, 140, and 160$μ$m) with 3-10 times better sensitivity than IRAS, covering the crucial far-IR wavelengths across the peak of the dust emission. Combined with a better spatial resolution, AKARI can much more precisely measure the total infrared l…
A light scalar dark matter (DM) is allowed in a wide range of the mass and interaction types. We show that the light scalar DM may be probed in a new way from final years of neutron-star (NS) binary inspirals. If the DM interacts with the neutron, its long wave coherence in the background can induce the time-oscillating mass shift, to which the binary inspiral is inherently sensitive. But the sensitivity is found to be significantly enhanced by a large number of gravitational-wave (GW) cycles during year-long highest-frequency measurements in the broadband $f \simeq 0.01-1000$ Hz. The future b…
Space-borne gravitational wave detectors, such as the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, are expected to observe black hole coalescences to high redshift and with large signal-to-noise ratios, rendering their gravitational waves ideal probes of fundamental physics. The promotion of Newton's constant to a time-function introduces modifications to the binary's binding energy and the gravitational wave luminosity, leading to corrections in the chirping frequency. Such corrections propagate into the response function and, given a gravitational wave observation, they allow for constraints…
Type Ia supernovae luminosities can be corrected to render them useful as standard candles able to probe the expansion history of the universe. This technique was successful applied to discover the present acceleration of the universe. As the number of SNe Ia observed at high redshift increases and analysis techniques are perfected, people aim to use this technique to probe the equation of state of the dark energy. Nevertheless, the nature of SNe Ia progenitors remains controversial and concerns persist about possible evolution effects that may be larger and harder to characterize than the mor…
