Tweet hashtags have the potential to improve the search for information during disaster events. However, there is a large number of disaster-related tweets that do not have any user-provided hashtags. Moreover, only a small number of tweets that contain actionable hashtags are useful for disaster response. To facilitate progress on automatic identification (or extraction) of disaster hashtags for Twitter data, we construct a unique dataset of disaster-related tweets annotated with hashtags useful for filtering actionable information. Using this dataset, we further investigate Long Short Term Memory-based models within a Multi-Task Learning framework. The best performing model achieves an F1-score as high as 92.22%. The dataset, code, and other resources are available on Github.
Social media is often utilized as a lifeline for communication during natural disasters. Traditionally, natural disaster tweets are filtered from the Twitter stream using the name of the natural disaster and the filtered tweets are sent for human annotation. The process of human annotation to create labeled sets for machine learning models is laborious, time consuming, at times inaccurate, and more importantly not scalable in terms of size and real-time use. In this work, we curate a silver standard dataset using weak supervision. In order to validate its utility, we train machine learning mod…

Social networks are widely used for information consumption and dissemination, especially during time-critical events such as natural disasters. Despite its significantly large volume, social media content is often too noisy for direct use in any application. Therefore, it is important to filter, categorize, and concisely summarize the available content to facilitate effective consumption and decision-making. To address such issues automatic classification systems have been developed using supervised modeling approaches, thanks to the earlier efforts on creating labeled datasets. However, exis…

We propose a comprehensive end-to-end pipeline for Twitter hashtags recommendation system including data collection, supervised training setting and zero shot training setting. In the supervised training setting, we have proposed and compared the performance of various deep learning architectures, namely Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and Transformer Network. However, it is not feasible to collect data for all possible hashtag labels and train a classifier model on them. To overcome this limitation, we propose a Zero Shot Learning (ZSL) paradigm for predicti…

Natural disasters (e.g., hurricanes) affect millions of people each year, causing widespread destruction in their wake. People have recently taken to social media websites (e.g., Twitter) to share their sentiments and feelings with the larger community. Consequently, these platforms have become instrumental in understanding and perceiving emotions at scale. In this paper, we introduce HurricaneEmo, an emotion dataset of 15,000 English tweets spanning three hurricanes: Harvey, Irma, and Maria. We present a comprehensive study of fine-grained emotions and propose classification tasks to discrimi…
Twitter is one of the most popular microblogging services in the world. The great amount of information within Twitter makes it an important information channel for people to learn and share news. Twitter hashtag is an popular feature that can be viewed as human-labeled information which people use to identify the topic of a tweet. Many researchers have proposed event-detection approaches that can monitor Twitter data and determine whether special events, such as accidents, extreme weather, earthquakes, or crimes take place. Although many approaches use hashtags as one of their features, few o…
Hashtags have become a powerful tool in social platforms such as Twitter to categorize and search for content, and to spread short messages across members of the social network. In this paper, we study temporal hashtag usage practices in Twitter with the aim of designing a cognitive-inspired hashtag recommendation algorithm we call BLLi,s. Our main idea is to incorporate the effect of time on (i) individual hashtag reuse (i.e., reusing own hashtags), and (ii) social hashtag reuse (i.e., reusing hashtags, which has been previously used by a followee) into a predictive model. For this, we turn t…
The rise in popularity of microblogging services like Twitter has led to increased use of content annotation strategies like the hashtag. Hashtags provide users with a tagging mechanism to help organize, group, and create visibility for their posts. This is a simple idea but can be challenging for the user in practice which leads to infrequent usage. In this paper, we will investigate various methods of recommending hashtags as new posts are created to encourage more widespread adoption and usage. Hashtag recommendation comes with numerous challenges including processing huge volumes of stream…

Increasing popularity of Twitter in politics is subject to commercial and academic interest. To fully exploit the merits of this platform, reaching the target audience with desired political leanings is critical. This paper extends the research on inferring political orientations of Twitter users to the case of 2017 Turkish constitutional referendum. After constructing a targeted dataset of tweets, we explore several types of potential features to build accurate machine learning based predictive models. In our experiments, a three-class support vector machine (SVM) classifier trained on semant…
The micro-blogging platform Twitter allows its nearly 320 million monthly active users to build a network of follower connections to other Twitter users (i.e., followees) in order to subscribe to content posted by these users. With this feature, Twitter has become one of the most popular social networks on the Web and was also the first platform that offered the concept of hashtags. Hashtags are freely-chosen keywords, which start with the hash character, to annotate, categorize and contextualize Twitter posts (i.e., tweets). Although hashtags are widely accepted and used by the Twitter commun…
In our work [KPL17], we study temporal usage patterns of Twitter hashtags, and we use the Base-Level Learning (BLL) equation from the cognitive architecture ACT-R [An04] to model how a person reuses her own, individual hashtags as well as hashtags from her social network. The BLL equation accounts for the time-dependent decay of item exposure in human memory. According to BLL, the usefulness of a piece of information (e.g., a hashtag) is defined by how frequently and how recently it was used in the past, following a time-dependent decay that is best modeled with a power-law distribution. We us…

The hashtag recommendation problem addresses recommending (suggesting) one or more hashtags to explicitly tag a post made on a given social network platform, based upon the content and context of the post. In this work, we propose a novel methodology for hashtag recommendation for microblog posts, specifically Twitter. The methodology, EmTaggeR, is built upon a training-testing framework that builds on the top of the concept of word embedding. The training phase comprises of learning word vectors associated with each hashtag, and deriving a word embedding for each hashtag. We provide two train…

Aspect-based opinion mining is widely applied to review data to aggregate or summarize opinions of a product, and the current state-of-the-art is achieved with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA)-based model. Although social media data like tweets are laden with opinions, their "dirty" nature (as natural language) has discouraged researchers from applying LDA-based opinion model for product review mining. Tweets are often informal, unstructured and lacking labeled data such as categories and ratings, making it challenging for product opinion mining. In this paper, we propose an LDA-based opinion…
Twitter, one of the biggest and most popular microblogging Websites, has evolved into a powerful communication platform which allows millions of active users to generate huge volume of microposts and queries on a daily basis. To accommodate effective categorization and easy search, users are allowed to make use of hashtags, keywords or phrases prefixed by hash character, to categorize and summarize their posts. However, valid hashtags are not restricted and thus are created in a free and heterogeneous style, increasing difficulty of the task of tweet categorization. In this paper, we propose a…
Vaccine hesitancy, which has recently been driven by online narratives, significantly degrades the efficacy of vaccination strategies, such as those for COVID-19. Despite broad agreement in the medical community about the safety and efficacy of available vaccines, a large number of social media users continue to be inundated with false information about vaccines and are indecisive or unwilling to be vaccinated. The goal of this study is to better understand anti-vaccine sentiment by developing a system capable of automatically identifying the users responsible for spreading anti-vaccine narrat…
Past studies in Sarcasm Detection mostly make use of Twitter datasets collected using hashtag-based supervision but such datasets are noisy in terms of labels and language. Furthermore, many tweets are replies to other tweets, and detecting sarcasm in these requires the availability of contextual tweets. To overcome the limitations related to noise in Twitter datasets, we curate News Headlines Dataset from two news websites: TheOnion aims at producing sarcastic versions of current events, whereas HuffPost publishes real news. The dataset contains about 28K headlines out of which 13K are sarcas…

Conversations on social media (SM) are increasingly being used to investigate social issues on the web, such as online harassment and rumor spread. For such issues, a common thread of research uses adversarial reactions, e.g., replies pointing out factual inaccuracies in rumors. Though adversarial reactions are prevalent in online conversations, inferring those adverse views (or stance) from the text in replies is difficult and requires complex natural language processing (NLP) models. Moreover, conventional NLP models for stance mining need labeled data for supervised learning. Getting labele…

Microblogging platforms such as Twitter provide active communication channels during mass convergence and emergency events such as earthquakes, typhoons. During the sudden onset of a crisis situation, affected people post useful information on Twitter that can be used for situational awareness and other humanitarian disaster response efforts, if processed timely and effectively. Processing social media information pose multiple challenges such as parsing noisy, brief and informal messages, learning information categories from the incoming stream of messages and classifying them into different …
The rapid adoption of online social media platforms has transformed the way of communication and interaction. On these platforms, discussions in the form of trending topics provide a glimpse of events happening around the world in real-time. Also, these trends are used for political campaigns, public awareness, and brand promotions. Consequently, these trends are sensitive to manipulation by malicious users who aim to mislead the mass audience. In this article, we identify and study the characteristics of users involved in the manipulation of Twitter trends in Pakistan. We propose 'Manipify', …
In the era of data-driven journalism, data analytics can deliver tools to support journalists in connecting to new and developing news stories, e.g., as echoed in micro-blogs such as Twitter, the new citizen-driven media. In this paper, we propose a framework for tracking and automatically connecting news articles to Twitter conversations as captured by Twitter hashtags. For example, such a system could alert journalists about news that get a lot of Twitter reaction, so that they can investigate those conversations for new developments in the story, promote their article to a set of interested…
Twitter data is extremely noisy -- each tweet is short, unstructured and with informal language, a challenge for current topic modeling. On the other hand, tweets are accompanied by extra information such as authorship, hashtags and the user-follower network. Exploiting this additional information, we propose the Twitter-Network (TN) topic model to jointly model the text and the social network in a full Bayesian nonparametric way. The TN topic model employs the hierarchical Poisson-Dirichlet processes (PDP) for text modeling and a Gaussian process random function model for social network model…

While keyphrase extraction has received considerable attention in recent years, relatively few studies exist on extracting keyphrases from social media platforms such as Twitter, and even fewer for extracting disaster-related keyphrases from such sources. During a disaster, keyphrases can be extremely useful for filtering relevant tweets that can enhance situational awareness. Previously, joint training of two different layers of a stacked Recurrent Neural Network for keyword discovery and keyphrase extraction had been shown to be effective in extracting keyphrases from general Twitter data. Hashtags in online social media have become a way for users to build communities around topics, promote opinions, and categorize messages. In the political context, hashtags on Twitter are used by users to campaign for their parties, spread news, or to get followers and get a general idea by following a discussion built around a hashtag. In the past, researchers have studied certain types and specific properties of hashtags by utilizing a lot of data collected around hashtags. In this paper, we perform a large-scale empirical analysis of elections using only the hashtags shared on Twitter duri…
Hashtag recommendation is a crucial task, especially with an increase of interest in using social media platforms such as Twitter in the last decade. Hashtag recommendation systems automatically suggest hashtags to a user while writing a tweet. Most of the research in the area of hashtag recommendation have used classical metrics such as hit rate, precision, recall, and F1-score to measure the accuracy of hashtag recommendation systems. These metrics are based on the exact match of the recommended hashtags with their corresponding ground truth. However, it is not clear how adequate these metri…
Twitter is a popular social network platform where users can interact and post texts of up to 280 characters called tweets. Hashtags, hyperlinked words in tweets, have increasingly become crucial for tweet retrieval and search. Using hashtags for tweet topic classification is a challenging problem because of context dependent among words, slangs, abbreviation and emoticons in a short tweet along with evolving use of hashtags. Since Twitter generates millions of tweets daily, tweet analytics is a fundamental problem of Big data stream that often requires a real-time Distributed processing. This…
Social media information distributes in different Online Social Networks (OSNs). This paper addresses the problem integrating the cross-OSN information to facilitate an immersive social media search experience. We exploit hashtag, which is widely used to annotate and organize multi-modal items in different OSNs, as the bridge for information aggregation and organization. A three-stage solution framework is proposed for hashtag representation, clustering and demonstration. Given an event query, the related items from three OSNs, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube, are organized in cluster-hashtag-item…
In social media like Twitter, hashtags carry a lot of semantic information and can be easily distinguished from the main text. Exploring and visualizing the space of hashtags in a meaningful way can offer important insights into a dataset, especially in crisis situations. In this demonstration paper, we present a functioning prototype, HashViz, that ingests a corpus of tweets collected in the aftermath of a crisis situation (such as the Las Vegas shootings) and uses the fastText bag-of-tricks semantic embedding algorithm (from Facebook Research) to embed words and hashtags into a vector space.…

Social media such as tweets are emerging as platforms contributing to situational awareness during disasters. Information shared on Twitter by both affected population (e.g., requesting assistance, warning) and those outside the impact zone (e.g., providing assistance) would help first responders, decision makers, and the public to understand the situation first-hand. Effective use of such information requires timely selection and analysis of tweets that are relevant to a particular disaster. Even though abundant tweets are promising as a data source, it is challenging to automatically identif…

In this paper, we present TwiSent, a sentiment analysis system for Twitter. Based on the topic searched, TwiSent collects tweets pertaining to it and categorizes them into the different polarity classes positive, negative and objective. However, analyzing micro-blog posts have many inherent challenges compared to the other text genres. Through TwiSent, we address the problems of 1) Spams pertaining to sentiment analysis in Twitter, 2) Structural anomalies in the text in the form of incorrect spellings, nonstandard abbreviations, slangs etc., 3) Entity specificity in the context of the topic se…
Twitter has grown to become an important platform to access immediate information about major events and dynamic topics. As one example, recent work has shown that classifiers trained to detect topical content on Twitter can generalize well beyond the training data. Since access to Twitter data is hidden behind a limited search API, it is impossible (for most users) to apply these classifiers directly to the Twitter unfiltered data streams ("firehose"). Rather, applications must first decide what content to retrieve through the search API before filtering that content with topical classifiers.…
Bot Detection is an essential asset in a period where Online Social Networks(OSN) is a part of our lives. This task becomes more relevant in crises, as the Covid-19 pandemic, where there is an incipient risk of proliferation of social bots, producing a possible source of misinformation. In order to address this issue, it has been compared different methods to detect automatically social bots on Twitter using Data Selection. The techniques utilized to elaborate the bot detection models include the utilization of features as the tweets metadata or the Digital Fingerprint of the Twitter accounts.…
The importance of social media is again exposed in the recent tragedy of the 2023 Turkey and Syria earthquake. One way to assess a certain aspect of the value of scientific research is to measure the attention it receives on social media. While previous research has mostly focused on the "number of mentions" of scientific research on social media, the current study applies "topic networks" to measure public attention to scientific research on Twitter. Topic networks are the networks of co-occurring author keywords in scholarly publications and networks of co-occurring hashtags in the tweets mentioning those scholarly publications. This study investigates which topics in opioid scholarly publications ha…
