The effect of spatially modulated interaction on quantum phase transition in one-dimensional interacting spinless fermion system is theoretically investigated by exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group method. Our calculations show that the periodically modulated interaction can drive the spinless fermion system into topological charge density wave state. The topological state is encoded by quasiparticle end states and the fractional quantized $e/2$ end charges, and characterized by Berry phase and Chern number. The quasiparticle energy spectra as a function of modulated interaction period appears a stunning fractal-like structure. For the quasi-periodic case, the topological phase transition can also occur. In a word, the spatially modulated interaction can be a new simple and elegant avenue towards realizing to interacting topological phases.
We use exact diagonalization and cluster perturbation theory to address the role of strong interactions and quantum fluctuations for spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice. We find quantum fluctuations to be very pronounced both at weak and strong interactions. A weak second-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V_2$ induces a tendency toward an interaction-generated quantum anomalous Hall phase, as borne out in mean-field theory. However, quantum fluctuations prevent the formation of a stable quantum Hall phase before the onset of the charge-modulated phase predicted at large $V_2$ by mean-field th…
We present results of molecular dynamics simulations of the electron system on the surface of liquid helium. The simulations are done for 1600 electrons with periodic boundary conditions. Electron scattering by capillary waves and phonons in helium is explicitly taken into account. We find that the self-diffusion coefficient superlinearly decreases with the decreasing temperature. In the free electron system it turns to zero essentially discontinuously, which we associate with the liquid to solid transition. In contrast, when the system is placed in the fully commensurate one-dimensional poten…
Electronic nematic phases are broadly characterized by spontaneously broken rotational symmetry. Although they have been widely recognized in the context of high temperature cuprates, bilayer ruthenates, and iron-based superconductors, the focus so far has been exclusively on the uniform nematic phase. Recently, however, it was proposed that on a square lattice a nematic instability in the d-wave charge channel could lead to a spatially modulated nematic state, where the modulation vector q is determined by the relative location of the Fermi level to the van Hove singularity. Interestingly, th…
We study an one-dimensional transverse field Ising model with additional periodically modulated real and complex fields. It is shown that both models can be mapped on a pseudo spin system in the k space in the aid of an extended Bogoliubov transformation. This allows us to introduce the geometric quantity, the Chern number, to identify the nature of quantum phases. Based on the exact solution, we find that the spatially modulated real and complex fields rearrange the phase boundaries from that of the ordinary Ising model, which can be characterized by the Chern numbers defined in the context o…
We show that the five-dimensional Maxwell theory with the Chern-Simons term is tachyonic in the presence of a constant electric field. When coupled to gravity, a sufficiently large Chern-Simons coupling causes instability of the Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in anti-de Sitter space. The instability happens only at non-vanishing momenta, suggesting a spatially modulated phase in the holographically dual quantum field theory in 3+1 dimensions, with spontaneous current generation in a helical configuration. The three-charge extremal black hole in the type IIB superstring theory on AdS_5 x S^5 ba…
We present a string theory construction of a gravity dual of a spatially modulated phase. In our earlier work, we showed that the Chern-Simons term in the 5-dimensional Maxwell theory destabilizes the Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in anti-de Sitter space if the Chern-Simons coupling is sufficiently high. In this paper, we show that a similar instability is realized on the worldvolume of 8-branes in the Sakai-Sugimoto model in the quark-gluon plasma phase. We also construct and analyze a non-linear solution describing the end-point of the transition. Our result suggests a new spatially modulat…
Topological phases typically encode topology at the level of the single particle band structure. But a remarkable class of models shows that quantum anomalous Hall effects can be driven exclusively by interactions, while the parent non-interacting band structure is topologically trivial. Unfortunately, these models have so far relied on interactions that do not spatially decay and are therefore unphysical. We study a model of spinless fermions on a decorated honeycomb lattice. Using complementary methods, mean-field theory and exact diagonalization, we find a robust quantum anomalous Hall phas…
Free fermions form a Fermi surface, which results in non-zero spectral weight at low energy and finite wavevector. In this work, we find similar features in holographic phases dual to strongly coupled quantum superfluid matter. At zero temperature, the phases we consider exhibit semi-local criticality in the IR and all the charge is carried by the scalar condensate outside the black hole horizon. Depending on the value taken by the IR critical exponents, we find Fermi surfaces in the transverse sector, Fermi shells in the longitudinal sector or no spectral weight at all. When there is non-zero…
We study two-component fermions in optical lattices with spatially alternating on-site interactions using dynamical mean-field theory. Calculating the quasi-particle weight, double occupancy, and order parameters for each sublattice, we discuss the low-temperature properties of the system. When both interactions are repulsive, the magnetically ordered state is realized at half-filling. In the attractive case, the superfluid state is, in general, realized with a particle number imbalance. On the other hand, when repulsive and attractive interactions are comparable in the half-filled system, the…
We show the stabilization of two trimer phases in a chain of spinless fermions with a correlated hopping term. A trimer fluid forms due to a gain in trimer kinetic energy and competes with a fluid of unbound fermions. Furthermore, we observe two intermediate phases where these two fluids coexist and do not spatially separate. Depending on the way trimers are created out of the Fermi sea, hybridization can occur, in which case the onset of correlations between the two fluids is well captured by a generalized BCS ansatz. These results are finally extended to the formation of larger multimers, wh…
In this paper, we study periodically modulated $s=1/2$ spin chain in a linear gradient potential (LP) that is generated by an external magnetic field. In the absence of the LP, the system has topological states that exhibit a magnetization plateau for a uniform external magnetic field. These topological states have a finite integer Chern number and their stability is clarified by an equivalent spinless fermion system derived by a Jordan-Wigner transformation. We show that the LP, which is nothing but a constant electric field in the spinless fermion system, destabilizes the topological states,…
In the previous paper [arXiv:0911.0679], we showed that the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole in the 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter space coupled to the Maxwell theory with the Chern-Simons term is unstable when the Chern-Simons coupling is sufficiently large. In the dual conformal field theory, the instability suggests a spatially modulated phase transition. In this paper, we construct and analyze non-linear solutions which describe the end-point of this phase transition. In the limit where the Chern-Simons coupling is large, we find that the phase transition is of the second order with the mean fi…
We introduce a class of spinless fermion models that exhibit quantum many-body scars (QMBS) originating from kinetic constraints in the form of density-assisted hopping. The models can be defined on any lattice in any dimension and allow for spatially varying interactions. We construct a tower of exact eigenstates with finite energy density, and we demonstrate that these QMBS are responsible for the nonthermal nature of the system by studying the entanglement entropy and correlation functions. The quench dynamics from certain initial states is also investigated, and it is confirmed that the QM…
Charge order in cuprate superconductors is a possible source of anomalous electronic properties in the underdoped regime. Intra-unit cell charge ordering tendencies point to electronic nematic order involving oxygen orbitals. In this context we investigate charge instabilities in the Emery model and calculate the charge susceptibility within diagrammatic perturbation theory. In this approach, the onset of charge order is signalled by a divergence of the susceptibility. Our calculations reveal three different kinds of order: a commensurate ($q=0$) nematic order, and two incommensurate nematic p…

We performed a study of the perturbative instabilities in Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a gravitational Chern-Simons term, which is dual to a strongly coupled field theory with both chiral and mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly. With an analysis of the fluctuations in the near horizon regime at zero temperature, we found that there might be two possible sources of instabilities. The first one corresponds to a real mass-squared which is below the BF bound of AdS$_2$, and it leads to the bell-curve phase diagram at finite temperature. The effect of mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly is…
We investigate the phase diagram of spinless fermions with nearest and next-nearest neighbour density-density interactions on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling. Using Exact Diagonalization techniques of the full Hamiltonian and constrained subspaces, combined with a careful choice of finite-size clusters, we determine the different charge orderings that occur for large interactions. In this regime we find a two-sublattice Néel-like state, a charge modulated state with a tripling of the unit cell, a zig-zag phase and a novel charge ordered states with a 12 site unit cells we call Néel domai…
A key concept in the emerging field of spintronics is the electric field control of spin precession via the effective magnetic field generated by the Rashba spin orbit interaction (RSOI). Here, by extensive Density Matrix Renormalization Group computations, we demonstrate the presence of alternating spin current order in the gapped phases of a quantum wire with spatially modulated RSOI and repulsive electron-electron interactions. Our results are analytically supported by bosonization and by a mapping to a locally rotated spin basis.

Stripe phases were predicted to arise in doped antiferromagnets through competition between magnetism and the kinetic energy of mobile carriers (typically holes). In copper-oxides the main experimental evidence for stripes is neutron scattering from La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 (LNSCO) and La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 (LBCO) which reveals coexisting static spin and charge order whose wavelengths differ by a factor of two, reminiscent of charged rivers separating regions of oppositely-phased antiferromagnetism. A neutron is an electrically neutral object, however, so does not detect charge but rather its associ…
The interplay of magnetic and charge fluctuations can lead to quantum phases with exceptional electronic properties. A case in point is magnetically-driven superconductivity, where magnetic correlations fundamentally affect the underlying symmetry and generate new physical properties. The superconducting wave-function in most known magnetic superconductors does not break translational symmetry. However, it has been predicted that modulated triplet p-wave superconductivity occurs in singlet d-wave superconductors with spin-density wave (SDW) order. Here we report evidence for the presence of a …
