Consider an uplink cloud radio access network where users are observed simultaneously by several base stations, each with a rate-limited link to a central processor, which wishes to decode all transmitted messages. Recent efforts have demonstrated the advantages of compression-based strategies that send quantized channel observations to the central processor, rather than attempt local decoding. We study the setting where channel state information is not available at the transmitters, but known fully or partially at the base stations. We propose an end-to-end integer-forcing framework for compression-based uplink cloud radio access, and show that it operates within a constant gap from the optimal outage probability if channel state information is fully available at the base stations. We demonstrate via simulations that our framework is competitive with state-of-the-art Wyner-Ziv-based strategies.
The recently proposed Cell-Free massive MIMO architecture is studied for the uplink. In contrast to most previous works, joint detection is performed using global CSI. Therefore, we study strategies for transferring CSI to the CPU taking into account the fronthaul capacity which limits CSI quantization. Two strategies for pilot-based CSI acquisition are considered: estimate-and-quantize and quantize-and-estimate. These are analysed using the Bussgang decomposition. For a given quantization constraint for the data and CSI the achievable rate per user with Zero-Forcing is determined. Numerical r…
Consider a Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-access channel (MAC) with channel matrix $\mathbf{H}$ and a Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) with channel matrix $\mathbf{H}^{\mathsf{T}}$. For the MIMO MAC, the integer-forcing architecture consists of first decoding integer-linear combinations of the transmitted codewords, which are then solved for the original messages. For the MIMO BC, the integer-forcing architecture consists of pre-inverting the integer-linear combinations at the transmitter so that each receiver can obtain its desired codeword by decoding an integer-…
This work aims to design a cellular network for maximal energy efficiency (EE). In particular, we consider the uplink with multi-antenna base stations and assume that zero- forcing (ZF) combining is used for data detection with imperfect channel state information. Using stochastic geometry and a new lower bound on the average per-user spectral efficiency of the network, we optimize the pilot reuse factor, number of antennas and users per base station. Closed-form expressions are computed from which valuable insights into the interplay between the optimization variables, hardware characteristic…
In this paper, we analyze the performance of the uplink communication of massive multi-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under the effects of pilot contamination and delayed channels because of terminal mobility. The base stations (BSs) estimate the channels through the uplink training, and then use zero-forcing processing to decode the transmit signals from the users. The probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is derived for any finite number of antennas. From this PDF, we derive an achievable ergodic rate with a finite number of BS …
We study information theoretic models of interference networks that consist of K Base Station (BS) - Mobile Terminal (MT) pairs. Each BS is connected to the MT carrying the same index as well as L following MTs, where the connectivity parameter L >= 1. We fix the value of L and study large networks as K goes to infinity. We assume that each MT can be associated with Nc BSs, and these associations are determined by a cloud-based controller that has a global view of the network. An MT has to be associated with a BS, in order for the BS to transmit its message in the downlink, or decode its messa…
We study information theoretic models of interference networks that consist of K Base Station (BS) - Mobile Terminal (MT) pairs. Each BS is connected to the MT carrying the same index as well as L following MTs. We fix the value of L and study the per user Degrees of Freedom (puDoF) in large networks. We assume that each MT can be associated with N BSs, and these associations are determined by a cloud-based controller that has a global view of the network. An MT has to be associated with a BS, for the BS to transmit its message in the downlink, or have its decoded message in the uplink. We pro…
In this paper, we consider a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication system between a base station equipped with multiple antennas and multiple mobile users each equipped with a single antenna. The uplink scenario is considered. The uplink channels are acquired by the base station through a training phase. Two linear processing schemes are considered, namely maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF). We optimize the training period and optimal training energy under the average and peak power constraint so that an achievable sum rate is maximized.
In this letter, we investigate Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) for an uplink communication system with finite blocklength. Considering a two-user Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) Multiple Access Channel (MAC), we study the impact of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), blocklength, power allocation and target rate on the error probability performance of RSMA where one user message is split. We demonstrate that RSMA can improve the error probability performance significantly compared to Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) and RSMA can have a larger rate region than NOMA.
A multiple-input multiple-output wireless communication system is analytically studied, which operates with the aid of a large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surface (LRIS). LRIS is equipped with multiple passive elements with discrete phase adjustment capabilities, and independent Rician fading conditions are assumed for both the transmitter-to-LRIS and LRIS-to-receiver links. A direct transceiver link is also considered which is modeled by Rayleigh fading distribution. The system performance is analytically studied when the linear yet efficient zero-forcing detection is implemented at the …
This paper analyzes two-tier heterogeneous cellular network with decoupled downlink and uplink access. The basic performance benefits of uplink/downlink decoupling have been recently introduced. Here we provide a more elaborate treatment of the decoupling mechanism by analyzing spectral and energy efficiency of the system, as the joint improvement of these two features is crucial for the upcoming 5G systems. Contrary to the common assumption of a homogeneous user domain, we analyze two-tier user domain, whose transmit powers depend purely on the association process. The derived joint associati…
The autocorrelation of a Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequence with a non-zero cyclically shifted version of itself is zero. Due to the interesting property, ZC sequences are widely used in the LTE air interface in the primary synchronization signal (PSS), random access preamble (PRACH), uplink control channel (PUCCH) etc. However, this interesting property of ZC sequence is not useful in the random access initial uplink synchronization problem due to some specific structures of the underlying problem. In particular, the state of the art uplink synchronization algorithms do not perform equally for all ZC s…
Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that the Gaussian broadcast channel has the same capacity region as the dual Gaussian multiple-access channel under the same sumpower constraint. This paper investigates a similar duality relationship between the uplink and downlink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN), where a central processor (CP) cooperatively serves multiple mobile users through multiple remote radio heads (RRHs) connected to the CP with finite-capacity fronthaul links. The uplink of such a C-RAN model corresponds to a multipleaccess relay channel; the downlink corresponds to …
The fifth generation (5G) communication scenarios such as the cellular network and the emerging machine type communications will produce massive small packets. To support massive connectivity and avoid signaling overhead caused by the transmission of those small packets, this paper proposes a novel method to improve the transmission efficiency for massive connections of wireless uplink channel. The proposed method combines compressive sensing (CS) with power domain NOMA jointly, especially neither the scheduling nor the centralized power allocation is necessary in the method. Both the analysis…
Massive MIMO systems, where the base stations are equipped with hundreds of antennas, are an attractive way to handle the rapid growth of data traffic. As the number of users increases, the initial access and handover in contemporary networks will be flooded by user collisions. In this work, we propose a random access procedure that resolves collisions and also performs timing, channel, and power estimation by simply utilizing the large number of antennas envisioned in massive MIMO systems and the inherent timing misalignments of uplink signals during network access and handover. Numerical res…
The present paper deals with an OFDM-based uplink within a multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) system where a massive MIMO approach is employed. In this context, the linear detectors Minimum Mean-Squared Error (MMSE), Zero Forcing (ZF) and Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) are considered and assessed. This papers includes Bit Error Rate (BER) results for uncoded QPSK/OFDM transmissions through a flat Rayleigh fading channel under the assumption of perfect power control and channel estimation. BER results are obtained through Monte Carlo simulations. Performance results are discussed in detail and we confirm…
Fifth generation (5G) wireless networks are expected to support very diverse applications and terminals. Massive connectivity with a large number of devices is an important requirement for 5G networks. Current LTE system is not able to efficiently support massive connectivity, especially on the uplink (UL). Among the issues arise due to massive connectivity is the cost of signaling overhead and latency. In this paper, an uplink contention-based sparse code multiple access (SCMA) design is proposed as a solution. First, the system design aspects of the proposed multiple-access scheme are descri…
To decrease the training overhead and improve the channel estimation accuracy in uplink cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), a superimposed-segment training design is proposed. The core idea of the proposal is that each mobile station superimposes a periodic training sequence on the data signal, and each remote radio heads prepends a separate pilot to the received signal before forwarding it to the centralized base band unit pool. Moreover, a complex-exponential basis-expansion-model based channel estimation algorithm to maximize a posteriori probability is developed, where the basis-expansio…
The Internet-of-things (IoT) is the paradigm where anything will be connected. There are two main approaches to handle the surge in the uplink (UL) traffic the IoT is expected to generate, namely, Scheduled UL (SC-UL) and random access uplink (RA-UL) transmissions. SC-UL is perceived as a viable tool to control Quality-of-Service (QoS) levels while entailing some overhead in the scheduling request prior to any UL transmission. On the other hand, RA-UL is a simple single-phase transmission strategy. While this obviously eliminates scheduling overheads, very little is known about how scalable RA…
We introduce a comprehensive analytical framework to compare between open access and closed access in two-tier femtocell networks, with regard to uplink interference and outage. Interference at both the macrocell and femtocell levels is considered. A stochastic geometric approach is employed as the basis for our analysis. We further derive sufficient conditions for open access and closed access to outperform each other in terms of the outage probability, leading to closed-form expressions to upper and lower bound the difference in the targeted received power between the two access modes. Simul…
In this paper, we consider hybrid uplink nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) that can support more users by exploiting the notion of power-domain NOMA. In hybrid uplink NOMA, we do not consider centralized power control as a base station (BS) needs instantaneous channel state information (CSI) of all users which leads to a high signaling overhead. Rather, each user is allowed to perform power control under fading in accordance with a truncated channel inversion power control policy. Due to the lack of coordination of centralized power control, users in the same resource block compete for acce…
We consider the distributed uplink resource allocation problem in a multi-carrier wireless network with multiple access points (APs). Each mobile user can optimize its own transmission rate by selecting a suitable AP and by controlling its transmit power. Our objective is to devise suitable algorithms by which mobile users can jointly perform these tasks in a distributed manner. Our approach relies on a game theoretic formulation of the joint power control and AP selection problem. In the proposed game, each user is a player with an associated strategy containing a discrete variable (the AP se…
The mobile edge computing framework offers the opportunity to reduce the energy that devices must expend to complete computational tasks. The extent of that energy reduction depends on the nature of the tasks, and on the choice of the multiple access scheme. In this paper, we first address the uplink communication resource allocation for offloading systems that exploit the full capabilities of the multiple access channel (FullMA). For indivisible tasks we provide a closed-form optimal solution of the energy minimization problem when a given set of users with different latency constraints are o…
The concept of user-centric and personalized service in the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks encourages technical solutions such as dynamic asymmetric uplink/downlink resource allocation and elastic association of cells to users with decoupled uplink and downlink (DeUD) access. In this paper we develop a joint uplink and downlink optimization algorithm for DeUD-enabled wireless networks for adaptive joint uplink and downlink bandwidth allocation and power control, under different link association policies. Based on a general model of inter-cell interference, we propose a three-step optimi…
In this paper, first we briefly describe the differences in the working principles of uplink and downlink NOMA transmissions. Then, for both uplink and downlink NOMA, we formulate a sum-throughput maximization problem in a cell such that the user clustering (i.e., grouping users into a single cluster or multiple clusters) and power allocations in NOMA cluster(s) can be optimized under transmission power constraints, minimum rate requirements of the users, and SIC constraints. Due to the combinatorial nature of the formulated mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem, we solve the pr…
In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), the baseband units and radio units of base stations are separated, which requires high-capacity fronthaul links connecting both parts. In this paper, we consider the delay-aware fronthaul allocation problem for C-RANs. The stochastic optimization problem is formulated as an infinite horizon average cost Markov decision process. To deal with the curse of dimensionality, we derive a closed-form approximate priority function and the associated error bound using perturbation analysis. Based on the closed-form approximate priority function, we propose a low-…
In this paper, we consider a relay-assisted uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system. In this system, two radio frequency (RF) users are grouped for simultaneous transmissions, over each resource block, to an intermediate relay. The relay then forwards the amplified version of the users' aggregated signals, in the presence of multiuser interference, to a relatively far destination. In order to cope with the users' ever-increasing desire for higher data rates, a high-throughput free-space optics (FSO) link is employed as the relay-destination backhaul link. It is assumed that the FSO…
In the envisioned 5G, uplink grant-free multiple access will become the enabler of ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) services. By removing the forward scheduling request (SR) and backward scheduling grant (SG), pilot-based channel estimation and data transmission are launched in one-shot communications with the aim of maintaining the reliability of $99.999\% $ or more and latency of 1ms or less under 5G new radio (NR) numerologies. The problem is that channel estimation can easily suffer from pilot aware attack which significantly reduces the system reliability. To solve this, …
By combining the concepts of superposition coding at the transmitter(s) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver(s), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has recently emerged as a promising multiple access technique for 5G wireless technology. In this article, we first discuss the fundamentals of uplink and downlink NOMA transmissions and outline their key distinctions (in terms of implementation complexity, detection and decoding at the SIC receiver(s), incurred intra-cell and inter-cell interferences). Later, for both downlink and uplink NOMA, we theoretically derive t…
The limited fronthaul capacity is known to be one of the main problems in cloud radio access networks (CRANs), especially in the wireless fronthaul links. In this paper, we consider the uplink of a CRAN system, where massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is utilized in the fronthaul link. Considering multi-antenna user equipment (UEs) and multi-antenna remote radio heads (RRHs), we maximize the system sum-rate by jointly optimizing the precoders at the UEs and the quantization noise covariance matrices and transmit powers at the RRHs. To solve the resulting nonconvex problem, an iterat…
Recent studies have numerically demonstrated the possible advantages of the asynchronous non-orthogonal multiple access (ANOMA) over the conventional synchronous non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The ANOMA makes use of the oversampling technique by intentionally introducing a timing mismatch between symbols of different users. Focusing on a two-user uplink system, for the first time, we analytically prove that the ANOMA with a sufficiently large frame length can always outperform the NOMA in terms of the sum throughput. To this end, we derive the expression for the sum throughput of the A…
In a heterogeneous network consisting of macro base stations (MBSs) and small base stations (SBSs), the traditional cell association policy, i.e., coupled access (CA), is far from optimal, due to the significant difference between the coverage and transmit powers of MBSs and SBSs. Hence, users may choose to associate with different types of BSs in downlink (DL) and uplink (UL), i.e., decoupled access (DA), to enhance spectral efficiency. In this paper, DA in multiuser MIMO communications is investigated in terms of UL spectral efficiency. Firstly, we obtain the UL association probabilities. In…
The optimal design of the energy-efficient multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) aided uplink ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) system is an important but unsolved problem. For such a system, we propose a novel absorbing-Markov-chain-based analysis framework to shed light on the puzzling relationship between the delay and reliability, as well as to quantify the system energy efficiency. We derive the transition probabilities of the absorbing Markov chain considering the Rayleigh fading, the channel estimation error, the zero-forcing multi-user-detection (ZF-MUD), the grant-free…
Multi-tier cellular communication networks constitute a promising approach to expand the coverage of cellular networks and enable them to offer higher data rates. In this paper, an uplink two-tier communication network is studied, in which macro users, femto users and femto access points are geometrically located inside the coverage area of a macro base station according to Poisson point processes. Each femtocell is assumed to have a fixed backhaul constraint that puts a limit on the maximum number of femto and macro users it can service. Under this backhaul constraint, the network adopts a sp…
This letter puts forth an analytical approach to evaluate the outage probability of power-based NOMA on the uplink of a 5G cell, the outage being defined as the event where the receiver fails to successfully decode all the simultaneously received signals. In the examined scenario, Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) is considered and an arbitrary number of superimposed signals is present. For the Rayleigh fading case, the outage probability is provided in closed-form, clearly outlining its dependency on the signal-to-noise ratio of the users that are simultaneously transmitting, as well…
Uplink-downlink duality refers to the fact that under a sum-power constraint, the capacity regions of a Gaussian multiple-access channel and a Gaussian broadcast channel with Hermitian transposed channel matrices are identical. This paper generalizes this result to a cooperative cellular network, in which remote access-points are deployed as relays in serving the users under the coordination of a central processor (CP). In this model, the users and the relays are connected over noisy wireless links, while the relays and the CP are connected over noiseless but rate-limited fronthaul links. Base…
The 5th generation mobile communication systems aim to support massive access for future wireless applications. Unfortunately, wireless resource scarcity in random access (RA) is a fundamental bottleneck for enabling massive access. To address this problem, we propose a virtual carrier sensing (VCS) based RA scheme in massive MIMO systems. The essence of the proposed scheme lies in exploiting wireless spatial resources of uplink channels occupied by assigned user equipments (UEs) to increase channel resources for RA. With the proposed scheme, RA UEs are able to exploit the spatial resources th…
This paper computes the distortion power at the receiver side of an FBMC/OQAM-based OFDMA uplink channel under strong frequency selectivity and/or user timing errors. More precisely, it provides a distortion expression that is valid for a wide class of prototype pulses (not necessarily perfect-reconstruction ones) when the number of subcarriers is sufficiently large. This result is a valuable instrument for analyzing how users interfere to one another and to justify, formally, the common choice of placing an empty guard band between adjacent users. Interestingly, the number of out-band subcarr…
This paper proposes a stochastic geometry framework to analyze the SINR and rate performance in a large-scale uplink massive MIMO network. Based on the model, expressions are derived for spatial average SINR distributions over user and base station distributions with maximum ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers. We show that using massive MIMO, the uplink SINR in certain urban marco-cell scenarios is limited by interference. In the interference-limited regime, the results reveal that for MRC receivers, a super-linear (polynomial) scaling law between the number of base station …
In this paper, we investigate the combination of two key enabling technologies for the fifth generation (5G) wireless mobile communication, namely millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In particular, we consider a typical 2-user uplink mmWave-NOMA system, where the base station (BS) equips an analog beamforming structure with a single RF chain and serves 2 NOMA users. An optimization problem is formulated to maximize the achievable sum rate of the 2 users while ensuring a minimal rate constraint for each user. The problem turns to be a joint power c…
The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted sparse code multiple access (RIS-SCMA) is an attractive scheme for future wireless networks. In this letter, for the first time, the RIS phase shifts of the uplink RIS-SCMA system are optimized based on the alternate optimization (AO) technique to improve the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a discrete set of RIS phase shifts. The system model of the uplink RIS-SCMA is formulated to utilize the AO algorithm. For further reduction in the computational complexity, a low-complexity AO (LC-AO) algorithm is proposed. The complexity analy…
A full-duplex (FD) multiple antenna access point (AP) communicating with single antenna half-duplex (HD) spatially random users to support simultaneous uplink (UL)/downlink (DL) transmissions is investigated. Since FD nodes are inherently constrained by the loopback interference (LI), we study precoding schemes for the AP based on maximum ratio combining (MRC)/maximal ratio transmission (MRT), zero-forcing and the optimal scheme for UL and DL sum rate maximization using tools from stochastic geometry. In order to shed insights into the system's performance, simple expressions for single antenn…
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is envisioned to be one of the most beneficial technologies for next generation wireless networks due to its enhanced performance compared to other conventional radio access techniques. Although the principle of NOMA allows multiple users to use the same frequency resource, due to decoding complication, information of users in practical systems cannot be decoded successfully if many of them use the same channel. Consequently, assigned spectrum of a system needs to be split into multiple subchannels in order to multiplex that among many users. Uplink resour…
We discuss the problem of designing channel access architectures for enabling fast, low-latency, grant-free and uncoordinated uplink for densely packed wireless nodes. Specifically, we study random-access codes, previously introduced for the AWGN multiple-access channel (MAC) by Polyanskiy'2017, in the practically more relevant case of users subject to Rayleigh fading, when channel gains are unknown to the decoder. We propose a random coding achievability bound, which we analyze both non-asymptotically (at finite blocklength) and asymptotically. As a candidate practical solution, we propose an…
Reconfigurable intelligent surface-empowered communication (RIS) and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) are promising candidates for future generations of wireless networks. The former enhances the transmission environments, whereas the latter provides a high spectral efficiency transmission. This letter proposes, for the first time, an RIS-assisted uplink SCMA (SCMA-RIS) scheme to improve the conventional SCMA spectrum efficiency. The message passing algorithm (MPA) is utilized and modified to decode the SCMA-RIS transmitted signals. Moreover, a low-complexity decoder for the SCMA-RIS scheme …
We characterize the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) rates of a full-duplex cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with all participate and single best remote radio head (RRH) association schemes. Specifically, multi-antenna equipped RRHs distributed according to a Poisson point process is assumed. The UL and DL sum rate of the single best RRH association scheme is maximized using receive and transmit beamformer designs at the UL and DL RRHs, respectively. In the case of the single best strategy, we study both optimum and sub-optimum schemes based on maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission…
Wireless cellular networks evolve towards a heterogeneous infrastructure, featuring multiple types of Base Stations (BSs), such as Femto BSs (FBSs) and Macro BSs (MBSs). A wireless device observes multiple points (BSs) through which it can access the infrastructure and it may choose to receive the downlink (DL) traffic from one BS and send uplink (UL) traffic through another BS. Such a situation is referred to as decoupled DL/UL access. Using the framework of stochastic geometry, we derive the association probability for DL/UL. In order to maximize the average received power, as the relative d…
We design a jamming-resistant receiver scheme to enhance the robustness of a massive MIMO uplink system against jamming. We assume that a jammer attacks the system both in the pilot and data transmission phases. The key feature of the proposed scheme is that, in the pilot phase, we estimate not only the legitimate channel, but also the jamming channel by exploiting a purposely unused pilot sequence. The jamming channel estimate is used to constructed linear receive filters that reject the impact of the jamming signal. The performance of the proposed scheme is analytically evaluated using asymp…
This paper considers a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) where spatially distributed remote radio heads (RRHs) communicate with a full-duplex user. In order to reflect a realistic scenario, the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) RRHs are assumed to be equipped with multiple antennas and distributed according to a Poisson point process. We consider all participate and nearest RRH association schemes with distributed beamforming in the form of maximum ratio combining/maximal ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) and zero-forcing/MRT(ZF/MRT) processing. We derive analytical expressions useful to compare the a…
In many scenarios, low latency wireless communication assumes two-way connection, such that the node that receives information can swiftly send acknowledgment or other response. In this paper, we address the problem of low latency two-way communication and address it through proposal of a base station (BS) cooperation scheme. The scheme is based on downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) decoupled access (DUDA). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the idea of decoupled access is used to reduce latency. We derive the analytical expression for the average latency and verify that the …
Network assisted full-duplex (NAFD) is a spatial-division duplex technique for future wireless networks with cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF massive MIMO) network, where a large number of remote antenna units (RAUs), either using half-duplex or full-duplex, jointly support truly flexible duplex including time-division duplex, frequency-division duplex and full duplex on demand of uplink and downlink traffic by using network MIMO methods. With NAFD, bi-directional data rates of the wireless network could be increased and end-to-end delay could be reduced. In this paper, the…
Linear processing in the spatial domain at the base stations (BSs) and at the users of MIMO cellular systems enables the control of both inter-cell and intra-cell interference. A number of iterative algorithms have been proposed that allow the BSs and the users to calculate the transmit-side and the receive-side linear processors in a distributed manner via message exchange based only on local channel state information. In this paper, a novel such strategy is proposed that requires the exchange of unitary matrices between BSs and users. Specifically, focusing on a general both uplink- and down…
Femtocells are assuming an increasingly important role in the coverage and capacity of cellular networks. In contrast to existing cellular systems, femtocells are end-user deployed and controlled, randomly located, and rely on third party backhaul (e.g. DSL or cable modem). Femtocells can be configured to be either open access or closed access. Open access allows an arbitrary nearby cellular user to use the femtocell, whereas closed access restricts the use of the femtocell to users explicitly approved by the owner. Seemingly, the network operator would prefer an open access deployment since t…
This paper investigates the compress-and-forward scheme for an uplink cloud radio access network (C-RAN) model, where multi-antenna base-stations (BSs) are connected to a cloud-computing based central processor (CP) via capacity-limited fronthaul links. The BSs compress the received signals with Wyner-Ziv coding and send the representation bits to the CP; the CP performs the decoding of all the users' messages. Under this setup, this paper makes progress toward the optimal structure of the fronthaul compression and CP decoding strategies for the compress-and-forward scheme in C-RAN. On the CP …
We characterize the stability, metastability, and the stationary regime of traffic dynamics in a single-cell uplink wireless system. The traffic is represented in terms of spatial birth-death processes, in which users arrive as a Poisson point process in time and space, each with a file to transmit to the base station. The service rate of each user is based on its signal to interference plus noise ratio, where the interference is from other active users in the cell. Once the file is fully transmitted, the user leaves the cell. We derive the necessary and sufficient condition for network stabil…
Uplink and downlink cloud radio access networks are modeled as two-hop K-user L-relay networks, whereby small base-stations act as relays for end-to-end communications and are connected to a central processor via orthogonal fronthaul links of finite capacities. Simplified versions of network compress-forward (or noisy network coding) and distributed decode-forward are presented to establish inner bounds on the capacity region for uplink and downlink communications, that match the respective cutset bounds to within a finite gap independent of the channel gains and signal to noise ratios. These …
