We consider minimizing a sum of non-smooth objective functions with set constraints in a distributed manner. As to this problem, we propose a distributed algorithm with an exponential convergence rate for the first time. By the exact penalty method, we reformulate the problem equivalently as a standard distributed one without consensus constraints. Then we design a distributed projected subgradient algorithm with the help of differential inclusions. Furthermore, we show that the algorithm converges to the optimal solution exponentially for strongly convex objective functions.
Distributed Nash equilibrium seeking of aggregative games is investigated and a continuous-time algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is designed by virtue of projected gradient play dynamics and distributed average tracking dynamics, and is applicable to games with constrained strategy sets and weight-balanced communication graphs. We obtain an exponential convergence of the proposed algorithm to the Nash equilibrium. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of our methods.
In this paper we are interested in the problem of state observation of state-affine nonlinear systems. Our main contribution is to propose a globally exponentially convergent observer that requires only the necessary assumption of observability of the system. To the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first time such a result is reported in the literature.
We propose globally exponentially convergent continuous observers for invariant kinematic systems on finite-dimensional matrix Lie groups. Such an observer estimates, from measurements of landmarks, vectors and biased velocity, both the system state and the unknown constant bias in velocity measurement, where the state belongs to the state-space Lie group and the velocity to the Lie algebra of the Lie group. The main technique is to embed a given system defined on a matrix Lie group into Euclidean space and build observers in the Euclidean space. The theory is illustrated with the special Eucl…
In this paper, we consider two formulations for Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) under Slater type constraint qualification assumption, namely, SDP smooth and non-smooth formulations. We also propose two first-order linearly convergent algorithms for solving these formulations. Moreover, we introduce a bundle-level method which converges linearly uniformly for both smooth and non-smooth problems and does not require any smoothness information. The convergence properties of these algorithms are also discussed. Finally, we consider a special case of LMIs, linear system of inequalities, and show…
We consider the application of the type-I Anderson acceleration to solving general non-smooth fixed-point problems. By interleaving with safe-guarding steps, and employing a Powell-type regularization and a re-start checking for strong linear independence of the updates, we propose the first globally convergent variant of Anderson acceleration assuming only that the fixed-point iteration is non-expansive. We show by extensive numerical experiments that many first order algorithms can be improved, especially in their terminal convergence, with the proposed algorithm. Our proposed method of acce…
The paper presents a new state estimation algorithm for a bilinear equation representing the Fourier- Galerkin (FG) approximation of the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations on a torus in R2. This state equation is subject to uncertain but bounded noise in the input (Kolmogorov forcing) and initial conditions, and its output is incomplete and contains bounded noise. The algorithm designs a time-dependent gain such that the estimation error converges to zero exponentially. The sufficient condition for the existence of the gain are formulated in the form of algebraic Riccati equations. To demonstrate th…
Smoothing methods have become part of the standard tool set for the study and solution of nondifferentiable and constrained optimization problems as well as a range of other variational and equilibrium problems. In this note we synthesize and extend recent results due to Beck and Teboulle on infimal convolution smoothing for convex functions with those of X. Chen on gradient consistency for nonconvex functions. We use epi-convergence techniques to define a notion of epi-smoothing that allows us to tap into the rich variational structure of the subdifferential calculus for nonsmooth, nonconvex,…

We analyze a preconditioned subgradient method for optimizing composite functions $h \circ c$, where $h$ is a locally Lipschitz function and $c$ is a smooth nonlinear mapping. We prove that when $c$ satisfies a constant rank property and $h$ is semismooth and sharp on the image of $c$, the method converges linearly. In contrast to standard subgradient methods, its oracle complexity is invariant under reparameterizations of $c$.
We propose a globally convergent Gauss-Newton algorithm for finding a local optimal solution of a non-convex and possibly non-smooth optimization problem. The algorithm that we present is based on a Gauss-Newton-type iteration for the non-smooth penalized formulation of the original problem. We establish a global convergence rate for this scheme from any initial point to a stationary point of the problem while using an exact penalty formulation. Under some more restrictive conditions we also derive local quadratic convergence for this scheme. We apply our proposed algorithm to solve the Altern…
This paper presents a new generalized Armijo's line-search method, and combines it with a phi-regulation defined to obtain a new algorithm solving the very general non-linear non-smooth convex programming. For the algorithm designed, the global convergence is proved and the algorithm has super-linear convergent rate under very weak conditions. This paper generalized the results of reference "Fukushima M and Qi LQ (1996) SIAM Journal of Optimization 6: 1106-20".
The minimum volume enclosing ellipsoid (MVEE) problem is an optimization problem in the basis of many practical problems. This paper describes some new properties of this model and proposes a first-order oracle algorithm, the Adjusted Coordinate Descent (ACD) algorithm, to address the MVEE problem. The ACD algorithm is globally linear convergent and has an overwhelming advantage over the other algorithms in cases where the dimension of the data is large. Moreover, as a byproduct of the convergence property of the ACD algorithm, we prove the global linear convergence of the Frank-Wolfe type alg…
We study the \emph{Proximal Alternating Predictor-Corrector} (PAPC) algorithm introduced recently by Drori, Sabach and Teboulle to solve nonsmooth structured convex-concave saddle point problems consisting of the sum of a smooth convex function, a finite collection of nonsmooth convex functions and bilinear terms. We introduce the notion of pointwise quadratic supportability, which is a relaxation of a standard strong convexity assumption and allows us to show that the primal sequence is R-linearly convergent to an optimal solution and the primal-dual sequence is globally Q-linearly convergent…
The past decade has demonstrated increasing interests in using optimal control based methods within coherent quantum controllable systems. The versatility of such methods has been demonstrated with particular elegance within nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) where natural separation between coherent and dissipative spin dynamics processes has enabled coherent quantum control over long periods of time to shape the experiment to almost ideal adoption to the spin system and external manipulations. This has led to new design principles as well as powerful new experimental methods within magnetic re…
In the modern paradigm of multi-agent networks, communication has become one of the main bottlenecks for decentralized optimization, where a large number of agents are involved in minimizing the average of the local cost functions. In this paper, we propose a robust compressed push-pull algorithm (RCPP) that combines gradient tracking with communication compression. In particular, RCPP is compatible with a much more general class of compression operators that allow both relative and absolute compression errors. We show that RCPP achieves linear convergence rate for smooth objective functions s…
Decentralized optimization is a powerful paradigm that finds applications in engineering and learning design. This work studies decentralized composite optimization problems with non-smooth regularization terms. Most existing gradient-based proximal decentralized methods are known to converge to the optimal solution with sublinear rates, and it remains unclear whether this family of methods can achieve global linear convergence. To tackle this problem, this work assumes the non-smooth regularization term is common across all networked agents, which is the case for many machine learning problem…
This paper presents hybrid attitude and gyro-bias observers designed directly on the Special Orthogonal group SO(3). The proposed hybrid observers, enjoying global exponential stability, rely on a hysteresis-based switching between different configurations derived from a set of potential functions on SO(3). Different sets of potential functions have been designed via an appropriate angular warping transformation applied to some smooth and non-smooth potential functions on SO(3). We show that the proposed hybrid observers can be expressed solely in terms of inertial vector measurements and bias…
We suggest a new greedy strategy for convex optimization in Banach spaces and prove its convergent rates under a suitable behavior of the modulus of uniform smoothness of the objective function.
We consider two greedy algorithms for minimizing a convex function in a bounded convex set: an algorithm by Jones [1992] and the Frank-Wolfe (FW) algorithm. We first consider approximate versions of these algorithms. For smooth convex functions, we give sufficient conditions for convergence, a unified analysis for the well-known convergence rate of O(1/k) together with a result showing that this rate is the best obtainable from the proof technique, and an equivalence result for the two algorithms. We also consider approximate stochastic greedy algorithms for minimizing expectations. We show th…
In this paper a special semi-smooth equation associated to the second order cone is studied. It is shown that, under mild assumptions, the semi-smooth Newton method applied to this equation is well-defined and the generated sequence is globally and Q-linearly convergent to a solution. As an application, the obtained results are used to study the linear second order cone complementarity problem, with special emphasis on the particular case of positive definite matrices. Moreover, some computational experiments designed to investigate the practical viability of the method are presented.
We propose an inexact proximal augmented Lagrangian framework with explicit inner problem termination rule for composite convex optimization problems. We consider arbitrary linearly convergent inner solver including in particular stochastic algorithms, making the resulting framework more scalable facing the ever-increasing problem dimension. Each subproblem is solved inexactly with an explicit and self-adaptive stopping criterion, without requiring to set an a priori target accuracy. When the primal and dual domain are bounded, our method achieves $O(1/\sqrtε)$ and $O(1/ε)$ complexity bound in…
We present a hybrid systems framework for multi-agent optimization in which agents execute computations in continuous time and communicate in discrete time. The optimization algorithm is a hybrid version of parallelized coordinate descent. Agents implement a sample-and-hold strategy in which gradients are computed at communication times and held constant during flows between communications. Completeness of maximal solutions under these hybrid dynamics is established. Under assumptions of smoothness and strong convexity, we show that this system exponentially converges to the minimizer of an ob…

We prove that the iterates produced by, either the scalar step size variant, or the coordinatewise variant of AdaGrad algorithm, are convergent sequences when applied to convex objective functions with Lipschitz gradient. The key insight is to remark that such AdaGrad sequences satisfy a variable metric quasi-Fejér monotonicity property, which allows to prove convergence.
We investigated the imaging performance of a fast convergent ordered-subsets algorithm with subiteration-dependent preconditioners (SDPs) for positron emission tomography (PET) image reconstruction. In particular, we considered the use of SDP with the block sequential regularized expectation maximization (BSREM) approach with the relative difference prior (RDP) regularizer due to its prior clinical adaptation by vendors. Because the RDP regularization promotes smoothness in the reconstructed image, the directions of the gradients in smooth areas more accurately point toward the objective funct…
Motivated by applications to data networks where fast convergence is essential, we analyze the problem of learning in generic N-person games that admit a Nash equilibrium in pure strategies. Specifically, we consider a scenario where players interact repeatedly and try to learn from past experience by small adjustments based on local - and possibly imperfect - payoff information. For concreteness, we focus on the so-called "hedge" variant of the exponential weights algorithm where players select an action with probability proportional to the exponential of the action's cumulative payoff over t…

We provide the first global model recovery results for the IRLS (iteratively reweighted least squares) heuristic for robust regression problems. IRLS is known to offer excellent performance, despite bad initializations and data corruption, for several parameter estimation problems. Existing analyses of IRLS frequently require careful initialization, thus offering only local convergence guarantees. We remedy this by proposing augmentations to the basic IRLS routine that not only offer guaranteed global recovery, but in practice also outperform state-of-the-art algorithms for robust regression. …
Linear optimization is many times algorithmically simpler than non-linear convex optimization. Linear optimization over matroid polytopes, matching polytopes and path polytopes are example of problems for which we have simple and efficient combinatorial algorithms, but whose non-linear convex counterpart is harder and admits significantly less efficient algorithms. This motivates the computational model of convex optimization, including the offline, online and stochastic settings, using a linear optimization oracle. In this computational model we give several new results that improve over the …

We introduce and analyze BPALM and A-BPALM, two multi-block proximal alternating linearized minimization algorithms using Bregman distances for solving structured nonconvex problems. The objective function is the sum of a multi-block relatively smooth function (i.e., relatively smooth by fixing all the blocks except one) and block separable (nonsmooth) nonconvex functions. It turns out that the sequences generated by our algorithms are subsequentially convergent to critical points of the objective function, while they are globally convergent under KL inequality assumption. Further, the rate of…
This paper studies the long-existing idea of adding a nice smooth function to "smooth" a non-differentiable objective function in the context of sparse optimization, in particular, the minimization of $||x||_1+1/(2α)||x||_2^2$, where $x$ is a vector, as well as the minimization of $||X||_*+1/(2α)||X||_F^2$, where $X$ is a matrix and $||X||_*$ and $||X||_F$ are the nuclear and Frobenius norms of $X$, respectively. We show that they can efficiently recover sparse vectors and low-rank matrices. In particular, they enjoy exact and stable recovery guarantees similar to those known for minimizing $|…
