The total variation method is widely used in image noise suppression. However, this method is easy to cause the loss of image details, and it is also sensitive to parameters such as iteration time. In this work, the total variation method has been modified using a diffusion rate adjuster based on the phase congruency and a fusion filter of median filter and phase consistency boundary, which is called the MPC-TV method. Experimental results indicate that MPC-TV method is effective in noise suppression, especially for the removing of speckle noise, and it can also improve the robustness of iteration time of TV method on noise with different variance.

In order to improve speckle noise denoising of block matching 3d filtering (BM3D) method, an image frequency-domain multi-layer fusion enhancement method (MLFE-BM3D) based on nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) has been proposed. The method designs a NSCT hard threshold denoising enhancement to preprocess the image, then uses fusion enhancement in NSCT domain to fuse the preliminary estimation results of images before and after the NSCT hard threshold denoising, finally, BM3D denoising is carried out with the fused image to obtain the final denoising result. Experiments on natural images…

Computed tomography is widely used as an imaging tool to visualize three-dimensional structures with expressive bone-soft tissue contrast. However, CT resolution and radiation dose are tightly entangled, highlighting the importance of low-dose CT combined with sophisticated denoising algorithms. Most data-driven denoising techniques are based on deep neural networks and, therefore, contain hundreds of thousands of trainable parameters, making them incomprehensible and prone to prediction failures. Developing understandable and robust denoising algorithms achieving state-of-the-art performance …

A mainstream type of the state of the arts (SOTAs) based on convolutional neural network (CNN) for real image denoising contains two sub-problems, i.e., noise estimation and non-blind denoising. This paper considers real noise approximated by heteroscedastic Gaussian/Poisson Gaussian distributions with in-camera signal processing pipelines. The related works always exploit the estimated noise prior via channel-wise concatenation followed by a convolutional layer with spatially sharing kernels. Due to the variable modes of noise strength and frequency details of all feature positions, this desi…

While deep learning (DL) architectures like convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have enabled effective solutions in image denoising, in general their implementations overly rely on training data, lack interpretability, and require tuning of a large parameter set. In this paper, we combine classical graph signal filtering with deep feature learning into a competitive hybrid design -- one that utilizes interpretable analytical low-pass graph filters and employs 80% fewer network parameters than state-of-the-art DL denoising scheme DnCNN. Specifically, to construct a suitable similarity graph fo…

We introduce a novel aggregation method to efficiently perform image denoising. Preliminary filters are aggregated in a non-linear fashion, using a new metric of pixel proximity based on how the pool of filters reaches a consensus. We provide a theoretical bound to support our aggregation scheme, its numerical performance is illustrated and we show that the aggregate significantly outperforms each of the preliminary filters.

Photoreceptors in the retina are coupled by electrical synapses called "gap junctions". It has long been established that gap junctions increase the signal-to-noise ratio of photoreceptors. Inspired by electrically coupled photoreceptors, we introduced a simple filter, the PR-filter, with only one variable. On BSD68 dataset, PR-filter showed outstanding performance in SSIM during blind denoising tasks. It also significantly improved the performance of state-of-the-art convolutional neural network blind denosing on non-Gaussian noise. The performance of keeping more details might be attributed …

In spite of the improvements achieved by the several denoising algorithms over the years, many of them still fail at preserving the fine details of the image after denoising. This is as a result of the smooth-out effect they have on the images. Most neural network-based algorithms have achieved better quantitative performance than the classical denoising algorithms. However, they also suffer from qualitative (visual) performance as a result of the smooth-out effect. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to address this shortcoming. We propose a deep collaborative filtering-based (Deep-CoFiB) …
Depth images captured by off-the-shelf RGB-D cameras suffer from much stronger noise than color images. In this paper, we propose a method to denoise the depth images in RGB-D images by color-guided graph filtering. Our iterative method contains two components: color-guided similarity graph construction, and graph filtering on the depth signal. Implemented in graph vertex domain, filtering is accelerated as computation only occurs among neighboring vertices. Experimental results show that our method outperforms state-of-art depth image denoising methods significantly both on quality and effici…
As modern image denoiser networks have grown in size, their reported performance in popular real noise benchmarks such as DND and SIDD have now long outperformed classic non-deep learning denoisers such as Wiener and Wavelet-based methods. In this paper, we propose to revisit the Wiener filter and re-assess its potential performance. We show that carefully considering the implementation of the Wiener filter can yield similar performance to popular networks such as DnCNN.
Low-dose computed tomography (CT) denoising algorithms aim to enable reduced patient dose in routine CT acquisitions while maintaining high image quality. Recently, deep learning~(DL)-based methods were introduced, outperforming conventional denoising algorithms on this task due to their high model capacity. However, for the transition of DL-based denoising to clinical practice, these data-driven approaches must generalize robustly beyond the seen training data. We, therefore, propose a hybrid denoising approach consisting of a set of trainable joint bilateral filters (JBFs) combined with a co…
In this paper, we present on-sensor neuromorphic vision hardware implementation of denoising spatial filter. The mean or median spatial filters with fixed window shape are known for its denoising ability, however, have the drawback of blurring the object edges. The effect of blurring increases with an increase in window size. To preserve the edge information, we propose an adaptive spatial filter that uses neuron's ability to detect similar pixels and calculates the mean. The analog input differences of neighborhood pixels are converted to the chain of pulses with voltage controlled oscillator…

We introduce a paradigm for nonlocal sparsity reinforced deep convolutional neural network denoising. It is a combination of a local multiscale denoising by a convolutional neural network (CNN) based denoiser and a nonlocal denoising based on a nonlocal filter (NLF) exploiting the mutual similarities between groups of patches. CNN models are leveraged with noise levels that progressively decrease at every iteration of our framework, while their output is regularized by a nonlocal prior implicit within the NLF. Unlike complicated neural networks that embed the nonlocality prior within the layer…
Over the years, progressive improvements in denoising performance have been achieved by several image denoising algorithms that have been proposed. Despite this, many of these state-of-the-art algorithms tend to smooth out the denoised image resulting in the loss of some image details after denoising. Many also distort images of lower resolution resulting in a partial or complete structural loss. In this paper, we address these shortcomings by proposing a collaborative filtering-based (CoFiB) denoising algorithm. Our proposed algorithm performs weighted sparse domain collaborative denoising by…
Thresholding of Curvelet Coefficients, for image denoising, drains out subtle signal component in noise subspace. This produces ringing artifacts near edges and granular effect in the denoised image. We found the noise sensitivity of Curvelet phases (in contrast to their magnitude) reduces with higher noise level. Thus, we preserved the phase of the coefficients below threshold at coarser scale and estimated their magnitude by Joint Bilateral Filtering (JBF) technique from the thresholded and noisy coefficients. In the finest scale, we apply Bilateral Filter (BF) to keep edge information. Furt…
We propose a novel direction to improve the denoising quality of filtering-based denoising algorithms in real time by predicting the best filter parameter value using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). We take the use case of BM3D, the state-of-the-art filtering-based denoising algorithm, to demonstrate and validate our approach. We propose and train a simple, shallow CNN to predict in real time, the optimum filter parameter value, given the input noisy image. Each training example consists of a noisy input image (training data) and the filter parameter value that produces the best output (…

Scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) has been employed since microscopic images are widely used for biomedical or materials research. Acoustic imaging is an important and well-established method used in nondestructive testing (NDT), bio-medical imaging, and structural health monitoring. The imaging is frequently carried out with signals of low amplitude, which might result in leading that are noisy and lacking in details of image information. In this work, we attempted to analyze SAM images acquired from low amplitude signals and employed a block matching filter over time domain signals to obtain…
While convolutional neural nets (CNNs) have achieved remarkable performance for a wide range of inverse imaging applications, the filter coefficients are computed in a purely data-driven manner and are not explainable. Inspired by an analytically derived CNN by Hadji et al., in this paper we construct a new layered graph neural net (GNN) using GraphBio as our graph filter. Unlike convolutional filters in previous GNNs, our employed GraphBio is analytically defined and requires no training, and we optimize the end-to-end system only via learning of appropriate graph topology at each layer. In s…

Deep image denoisers achieve state-of-the-art results but with a hidden cost. As witnessed in recent literature, these deep networks are capable of overfitting their training distributions, causing inaccurate hallucinations to be added to the output and generalizing poorly to varying data. For better control and interpretability over a deep denoiser, we propose a novel framework exploiting a denoising network. We call it controllable confidence-based image denoising (CCID). In this framework, we exploit the outputs of a deep denoising network alongside an image convolved with a reliable filter…
Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) suffer from the degeneration of image quality due to speckle noise and bulk-motion noise, respectively. Because the cross-sectional retina has distinct features in OCT and OCTA B-scans, existing digital filters that can denoise OCT efficiently are unable to handle the bulk-motion noise in OCTA. In this Letter, we propose a universal digital filtering approach that is capable of minimizing both types of noise. Considering the retinal capillaries in OCTA are hard to differentiate in B-scans while having distinct curvilinear st…

Nowadays, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been a powerful tool in remote sensing by enhancing the information acquisition. During the InSAR processing, phase denoising of interferogram is a mandatory step for topography mapping and deformation monitoring. Over the last three decades, a large number of effective algorithms have been developed to do efforts on this topic. In this paper, we give a comprehensive overview of InSAR phase denoising methods, classifying the established and emerging algorithms into four main categories. The first two parts refer to the categories o…
Leading denoising methods such as 3D block matching (BM3D) are patch-based. However, they can suffer from frequency domain artefacts and require to specify explicit noise models. We present a patch-based method that avoids these drawbacks. It combines a simple and fast patch reordering with a non-linear smoothing. The smoothing rewards both patch and pixel similarities in a multiplicative way. We perform experiments on real world images with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), and on electron microscopy data with a more general additive noise model. Our filter outperforms BM3D in 77% of the …

Denoising of clinical CT images is an active area for deep learning research. Current clinically approved methods use iterative reconstruction methods to reduce the noise in CT images. Iterative reconstruction techniques require multiple forward and backward projections, which are time-consuming and computationally expensive. Recently, deep learning methods have been successfully used to denoise CT images. However, conventional deep learning methods suffer from the 'black box' problem. They have low accountability, which is necessary for use in clinical imaging situations. In this paper, we us…
Video Denoising is one of the fundamental tasks of any videoprocessing pipeline. It is different from image denoising due to the tem-poral aspects of video frames, and any image denoising approach appliedto videos will result in flickering. The proposed method makes use oftemporal as well as spatial dimensions of video frames as part of a two-stage pipeline. Each stage in the architecture named as Spatio-TemporalNetwork uses a channel-wise attention mechanism to forward the encodersignal to the decoder side. Based on the similarities between image and geometric data as results of the sampling of continuous physical quantities, it can be expected that the understanding of multivariate median filters for images provides a starting point for the development of shape processing techniques. As quotidian use of sophisticated cameras surges, people in modern society are more interested in capturing fine-quality images. However, the quality of the images might be inferior to people's expectations due to the noise contamination in the images. Thus, filtering out the noise while preserving vital image features is an essential requirement. Current existing denoising methods have their own assumptions on the probability distribution in which the contaminated noise is sampled for the method to attain its expected denoising performance. In this paper, we utilize our recent Gramian-based f…
A new denoising algorithm for hyperspectral complex domain data has been developed and studied. This algorithm is based on the complex domain block-matching 3D filter including the 3D Wiener filtering stage. The developed algorithm is applied and tuned to work in the singular value decomposition (SVD) eigenspace of reduced dimension. The accuracy and quantitative advantage of the new algorithm are demonstrated in simulation tests and in the processing of the experimental data. It is shown that the algorithm is effective and provides reliable results even for highly noisy data.
During the acquisition of an image from its source, noise always becomes an integral part of it. Various algorithms have been used in past to denoise the images. Image denoising still has scope for improvement. Visual information transmitted in the form of digital images has become a considerable method of communication in the modern age, but the image obtained after the transmission is often corrupted due to noise. In this paper, we review the existing denoising algorithms such as filtering approach and wavelets based approach and then perform their comparative study with bilateral filters. W…
This paper proposes a novel method for automatic MRI denoising that exploits last advances in deep learning feature regression and self-similarity properties of the MR images. The proposed method is a two-stage approach. In the first stage, an overcomplete patch-based convolutional neural network blindly removes the noise without specific estimation of the local noise variance to produce a preliminary estimation of the noise-free image. The second stage uses this preliminary denoised image as a guide image within a rotationally invariant non-local means filter to robustly denoise the original …
