Deep neural network-based architectures give promising results in various domains including pattern recognition. Finding the optimal combination of the hyper-parameters of such a large-sized architecture is tedious and requires a large number of laboratory experiments. But, identifying the optimal combination of a hyper-parameter or appropriate kernel size for a given architecture of deep learning is always a challenging and tedious task. Here, we introduced a genetic algorithm-based technique to reduce the efforts of finding the optimal combination of a hyper-parameter (kernel size) of a convolutional neural network-based architecture. The method is evaluated on three popular datasets of different handwritten Bangla characters and digits. The implementation of the proposed methodology can be found in the following link: https://github.com/DeepQn/GA-Based-Kernel-Size.
Tremendous variation in the scale of people/head size is a critical problem for crowd counting. To improve the scale invariance of feature representation, recent works extensively employ Convolutional Neural Networks with multi-column structures to handle different scales and resolutions. However, due to the substantial redundant parameters in columns, existing multi-column networks invariably exhibit almost the same scale features in different columns, which severely affects counting accuracy and leads to overfitting. In this paper, we attack this problem by proposing a novel Multi-column Mut…

To better characterize global structures, we design a confidence-driven reconstruction loss while an implicit diversified MRF regularization is adopted to enhance local details. The multi-column network combined with the reconstruction and MRF loss propagates local and global information derived from context to the target inpainting regions. Training 1-bit deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) is one of the most challenging problems in computer vision, because it is much easier to get trapped into local minima than conventional DCNNs. The reason lies in that the binarized kernels and activations of 1-bit DCNNs cause a significant accuracy loss and training inefficiency. To address this problem, we propose Genetic Binary Convolutional Networks (GBCNs) to optimize 1-bit DCNNs, by introducing a new balanced Genetic Algorithm (BGA) to improve the representational ability in an end-to-end framework. The BGA method is proposed to m…
The performance of convolutional neural networks (CNN) depends heavily on their architectures. Transfer learning performance of a CNN relies quite strongly on selection of its trainable layers. Selecting the most effective update layers for a certain target dataset often requires expert knowledge on CNN architecture which many practitioners do not posses. General users prefer to use an available architecture (e.g. GoogleNet, ResNet, EfficientNet etc.) that is developed by domain experts. With the ever-growing number of layers, it is increasingly becoming quite difficult and cumbersome to handp…
In recent years, people from all over the world are suffering from one of the most severe diseases in history, known as Coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19 for short. We investigate the use of Genetic Programming (GP) as a convolutional predictor for missing pixels in images. The training phase is performed by sweeping a sliding window over an image, where the pixels on the border represent the inputs of a GP tree. The output of the tree is taken as the predicted value for the central pixel. We consider two topologies for the sliding window, namely the Moore and the Von Neumann neighborhood. The best GP tree scoring the lowest prediction error over the training set is then used to predict the pixels in the test set. We experimentally assess our approach thr…
Crowd counting on static images is a challenging problem due to scale variations. Recently deep neural networks have been shown to be effective in this task. However, existing neural-networks-based methods often use the multi-column or multi-network model to extract the scale-relevant features, which is more complicated for optimization and computation wasting. To this end, we propose a novel multi-scale convolutional neural network (MSCNN) for single image crowd counting. Based on the multi-scale blobs, the network is able to generate scale-relevant features for higher crowd counting performa…
In recent years, there have been many popular Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), such as Google's Inception-V4, that have performed very well for various image classification problems. These commonly used CNN models usually use the same activation function, such as RELU, for all neurons in the convolutional layers; they are "Single-function CNNs." However, SCNNs may not always be optimal. Thus, a "Multi-function CNN" (MCNN), which uses different activation functions for different neurons, has been shown to outperform a SCNN. Also, CNNs typically have very large architectures that use a lot …

Even though convolutional neural networks (CNN) has achieved near-human performance in various computer vision tasks, its ability to tolerate scale variations is limited. The popular practise is making the model bigger first, and then train it with data augmentation using extensive scale-jittering. SiCNN uses a multi-column architecture, with each column focusing on a particular scale. Unlike previous multi-c…
The deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is the state-of-the-art solution for large-scale visual recognition. Following basic principles such as increasing the depth and constructing highway connections, researchers have manually designed a lot of fixed network structures and verified their effectiveness. Recent years have witnessed the breakthrough success of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) in image classification and other vision applications. Although freeing users from the troublesome handcrafted feature extraction by providing a uniform feature extraction-classification framework, DCNNs still require a handcrafted design of their architectures. The attention mechanism is one of the most important priori knowledge to enhance convolutional neural networks. Most attention mechanisms are bound to the convolutional layer and use local or global contextual information to recalibrate the input. This is a popular attention strategy design method. Global contextual information helps the network to consider the overall distribution, while local contextual information is more general. The contextual information makes the network pay attention to the mean or maximum value of a particular receptive field. Different from the most attention mechani…
This paper focuses on Winograd transformation in 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that are more over-parameterized compared with the 2D version. The over-increasing Winograd parameters not only exacerbate training complexity but also barricade the practical speedups due simply to the volume of element-wise products in the Winograd domain. We attempt to reduce trainable parameters by introducing a low-rank Winograd transformation, a novel training paradigm that decouples the original large tensor into two less storage-required trainable tensors, leading to a significant complexity reduct…

The task of crowd counting is to automatically estimate the pedestrian number in crowd images. To cope with the scale and perspective changes that commonly exist in crowd images, state-of-the-art approaches employ multi-column CNN architectures to regress density maps of crowd images. We instead propose a scale-adaptive CNN (SaCNN) architecture with a backbone of fixed small receptive fields. In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on deep neural networks for face sketch synthesis from a photo. Imitating the process of how artists draw sketches, our framework synthesizes face sketches in a cascaded manner. A content image is first generated that outlines the shape of the face and the key facial features. Textures and shadings are then added to enrich the details of the sketch. We utilize a fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) to create the content image, and propose a style transfer approach to introduce textures and shadings based on a newly proposed pyramid column …

Existing methods heavily rely on multi-column learning architectures to extract multi-scale features, which however suffer from heavy computational cost, especially undesired for crowd counting. We propose the use of dilated filters to construct an aggregation module in a multicolumn convolutional neural network for perspective-free counting. Counting is a common problem in computer vision (e.g. traffic on the street or pedestrians in a crowd). Modern approaches to the counting problem involve the production of a density map via regression whose integral is equal to the number of objects in the image. However, objects in the image can occur at different scales (e.g. due to perspective effects) which can make it difficult for a learning agent to learn the proper density map. While the …

Convolutional networks are large linear systems divided into layers and connected by non-linear units. These units are the "articulations" that allow the network to adapt to the input. To understand how a network manages to solve a problem we must look at the articulated decisions in entirety. If we could capture the actions of non-linear units for a particular input, we would be able to replay the whole system back and forth as if it was always linear. It would also reveal the actions of non-linearities because the resulting linear system, a Linear Interpreter, depends on the input image. We …
