Let $D(n)$ be the number of pairwise disjoint Steiner quadruple systems. A simple counting argument shows that $D(n) \leq n-3$ and a set of $n-3$ such systems is called a large set. No nontrivial large set was constructed yet, although it is known that they exist if $n \equiv 2$ or $4~(\text{mod}~6)$ is large enough. When $n \geq 7$ and $n \equiv 1$ or $5~(\text{mod}~6)$, we present a recursive construction and prove a recursive formula on $D(4n)$, as follows: $$ D(4n) \geq 2n + \min \{D(2n) ,2n-7\}. $$ The related construction has a few advantages over some of the previously known constructions for pairwise disjoint Steiner quadruple systems.
Steiner quadruple systems are set systems in which every triple is contained in a unique quadruple. It is will known that Steiner quadruple systems of order v, or SQS(v), exist if and only if v = 2, 4 mod 6. Universal cycles, introduced by Chung, Diaconis, and Graham in 1992, are a type of cyclic Gray code. Overlap cycles are generalizations of universal cycles that were introduced in 2010 by Godbole. Using Hanani's SQS constructions, we show that for every v = 2, 4 mod 6 with v > 4 there exists an SQS(v) that admits a 1-overlap cycle.
Let $N=L_n(q)$, {$n \geq 2$}, $q$ a prime power, be a projective linear simple group. We classify all Steiner quadruple systems admitting a group $G$ with $N \leq G \leq \Aut(N)$. In particular, we show that $G$ cannot act as a group of automorphisms on any Steiner quadruple system for $n>2$.
In this paper we present a graph theoretic construction of Steiner quadruple systems (SQS) admitting abelian groups as point-regular automorphism groups. The resulting SQS has an extra property which we call A-reversibility, where A is the underlying abelian group. In particular, when A is a 2-group of exponent at most 4, it is shown that an A-reversible SQS always exists. When the Sylow 2-subgroup of A is cyclic, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an A-reversible SQS, which is a generalization of a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a dihedr…
A Steiner quadruple system of order v is a 3-(v,4,1) design, and will be denoted SQS(v). Using the classification of finite 2-transitive permutation groups all SQS(v) with a flag-transitive automorphism group are completely classified, thus solving the "still open and longstanding problem of classifying all flag-transitive 3-(v,k,1) designs" for the smallest value of k. Moreover, a generalization of a result of H. Lueneburg (1965, Math. Z. 89, 82-90) is achieved.
The concept of pedant tree-connectivity was introduced by Hager in 1985. For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of at least two vertices, \emph{an $S$-Steiner tree} or \emph{a Steiner tree connecting $S$} (or simply, \emph{an $S$-tree}) is a such subgraph $T=(V',E')$ of $G$ that is a tree with $S\subseteq V'$. For an $S$-Steiner tree, if the degree of each vertex in $S$ is equal to one, then this tree is called a \emph{pedant $S$-Steiner tree}. Two pedant $S$-Steiner trees $T$ and $T'$ are said to be \emph{internally disjoint} if $E(T)\cap E(T')=\varnothing$ and $V(T)\cap V(T')=S$. …
The problem of determining the smallest number of edges, $h(n;\barκ\geq r)$, which guarantees that any graph with $n$ vertices and $h(n;\barκ\geq r)$ edges will contain a pair of vertices joined by $r$ internally disjoint paths was posed by Erdös and Gallai. Bollobás considered the problem of determining the largest number of edges $f(n;\barκ\leq \ell)$ for graphs with $n$ vertices and local connectivity at most $\ell$. One can see that $f(n;\barκ\leq \ell)= h(n;\barκ\geq \ell+1)-1$. These two problems had received a wide attention of many researchers in the last few decades. In the above prob…
A partial Steiner triple system of order n is sequenceable if there is a sequence of length n of its distinct points such that no proper segment of the sequence is a union of point-disjoint blocks. We prove that if a partial Steiner triple system has at most three point-disjoint blocks, then it is sequenceable.
The concept of maximum local connectivity $\bar κ$ of a graph was introduced by Bollobás. One of the problems about it is to determine the largest number of edges $f(n;\barκ\leq \ell)$ for graphs of order $n$ that have local connectivity at most $\ell$. We consider a generalization of the above concept and problem. For $S\subseteq V(G)$ and $|S|\geq 2$, the \emph{generalized local connectivity} $κ(S)$ is the maximum number of internally disjoint trees connecting $S$ in $G$. The parameter $\barκ_k(G)=max\{κ(S)|S\subseteq V(G),|S|=k\}$ is called the \emph{maximum generalized local connectivity} …

A Steiner quadruple system (briefly $SQS(n)$) is a pair $(X,B)$ where $|X|=n$ and $B$ is a collection of 4-element blocks such that every 3-subset of $X$ is contained in exactly one member of $B$. Hanani \cite{Hanani} proved that the necessary condition $n\ {\rm mod}\ 6= 2\ {\rm or}\ 4$ for the existence of a Steiner quadruple systems of order $n$ is also sufficient. Lenz \cite{Lenz} proved that the logarithm of the number of different $SQS(n)$ is greater than $cn^3$ where $c>0$ is a constant and $n$ is admissible. We prove that the logarithm of the number of different $SQS(n)$ is $Θ(n^3\ln n)…
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of size at least $2$, an $S$-Steiner tree $T$ is a subgraph of $G$ that is a tree with $S\subseteq V(T)$. Two $S$-Steiner trees $T$ and $T'$ are internally disjoint (resp. edge-disjoint) if $E(T)\cap E(T')=\emptyset$ and $V(T)\cap V(T')=S$ (resp. if $E(T)\cap E(T')=\emptyset$). Let $κ_G (S)$ (resp. $λ_G (S)$) denote the maximum number of internally disjoint (resp. edge-disjoint) $S$-Steiner trees in $G$. The $k$-tree connectivity $κ_k(G)$ (resp. $k$-tree edge-connectivity $λ_k(G)$) of $G$ is then defined as the minimum $κ_G (S)$ (resp. $λ_G (S)…
Large sets of combinatorial designs has always been a fascinating topic in design theory. These designs form a partition of the whole space into combinatorial designs with the same parameters. In particular, a large set of block designs, whose blocks are of size $k$ taken from an $n$-set, is a partition of all the $k$-subsets of the $n$-set into disjoint copies of block designs, defined on the $n$-set, and with the same parameters. The current most intriguing question in this direction is whether large sets of Steiner quadruple systems exist and to provide explicit constructions for those para…
For a digraph $D=(V(D), A(D))$, and a set $S\subseteq V(D)$ with $r\in S$ and $|S|\geq 2$, an $(S, r)$-tree is an out-tree $T$ rooted at $r$ with $S\subseteq V(T)$. Two $(S, r)$-trees $T_1$ and $T_2$ are said to be arc-disjoint if $A(T_1)\cap A(T_2)=\emptyset$. Two arc-disjoint $(S, r)$-trees $T_1$ and $T_2$ are said to be internally disjoint if $V(T_1)\cap V(T_2)=S$. Let $κ_{S,r}(D)$ and $λ_{S,r}(D)$ be the maximum number of internally disjoint and arc-disjoint $(S, r)$-trees in $D$, respectively. The generalized $k$-vertex-strong connectivity of $D$ is defined as $$κ_k(D)= \min \{κ_{S,r}(D)\…
It is conjectured that every Steiner triple system of order $v \neq 7$ has chromatic index at most $(v+3)/2$ when $v \equiv 3 \pmod{6}$ and at most $(v+5)/2$ when $v \equiv 1 \pmod{6}$. Herein, we construct a Steiner triple system of order $v$ with chromatic index at least $(v+3)/2$ for each integer $v \equiv 3 \pmod{6}$ such that $v \geq 15$, with four possible exceptions. We further show that the maximum number of disjoint parallel classes in the systems constructed is sublinear in $v$. Finally, we establish for each order $v \equiv 15 \pmod{18}$ that there are at least $v^{v^2(1/6+o(1))}$ n…
For a digraph $D=(V(D), A(D))$, and a set $S\subseteq V(D)$ with $r\in S$ and $|S|\geq 2$, a directed $(S, r)$-Steiner path or, simply, an $(S, r)$-path is a directed path $P$ started at $r$ with $S\subseteq V(P)$. Two $(S, r)$-paths are said to be arc-disjoint if they have no common arc. Two arc-disjoint $(S, r)$-paths are said to be internally disjoint if the set of common vertices of them is exactly $S$. Let $κ^p_{S,r}(D)$ (resp. $λ^p_{S,r}(D)$) be the maximum number of internally disjoint (resp. arc-disjoint) $(S, r)$-paths in $D$. The directed path $k$-connectivity of $D$ is defined as $$…
Let $A,B$ be disjoint sets of sizes $n$ and $m$. Let ${\mathcal Q}$ be a family of quadruples, having $2$ elements from $A$ and $2$ from $B$, such that any subset $S \subseteq A \cup B$ with $|S|=7$, $|S \cap A| \geq 2$ and $|S \cap B| \geq 2$ contains one of the quadruples. We prove that the smallest size of ${\mathcal Q}$ is $(1/16 + O(1/n) + O(1/m)) n^2 m^2$ as $n,m\to\infty$. We also solve asymptotically a more general two-partite Turán problem for quadruples.
A {\em cross-free} set of size $m$ in a Steiner triple system $(V,{\cal{B}})$ is three pairwise disjoint $m$-element subsets $X_1,X_2,X_3\subset V$ such that no $B\in {\cal{B}}$ intersects all the three $X_i$-s. We conjecture that for every admissible $n$ there is an STS$(n)$ with a cross-free set of size $\lfloor{n-3\over 3}\rfloor$ which if true, is best possible. We prove this conjecture for the case $n=18k+3$, constructing an STS$(18k+3)$ containing a cross-free set of size $6k$. We note that some of the $3$-bichromatic STSs, constructed by Colbourn, Dinitz and Rosa, have cross-free sets o…
It is well known that, whenever $k$ divides $n$, the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices can be partitioned into disjoint perfect matchings. Equivalently, the set of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set can be partitioned into parallel classes so that each parallel class is a partition of the $n$-set. This result is known as Baranyai's theorem, which guarantees the existence of \emph{Baranyai partitions}. Unfortunately, the proof of Baranyai's theorem uses network flow arguments, making this result non-explicit. In particular, there is no known method to produce Baranyai partitions in time an…
