In this letter, we introduce a novel mixed terahertz (THz)-radio frequency (RF) wireless system architecture, which can be used for backhaul/fronthaul applications, and we deliver the theoretical framework for its performance assessment. In more detail, after identifying the main design parameters and characteristics, we derive novel closed-form expressions for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio cumulative density function, the outage probability, and the symbol error rate, assuming that the system experiences the joint effect of fading and stochastic antenna misalignment. The derived analytical framework is verified through simulations and quantifies the system's effectiveness and reliability. Finally, our results contribute to the extraction of useful design guidelines.
The existing relay-assisted terahertz (THz) wireless system is limited to dual-hop transmission with pointing errors and short-term fading without considering the shadowing effect. This paper analyzes the performance of a multihop-assisted backhaul communication mixed with an access link under the shadowed fading with antenna misalignment errors. We derive statistical results of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the multihop link by considering independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d) $α$-$μ$ fading channel with pointing errors employing channel-assisted (CA) and fixed-gain (FG) a…
Effective resource allocation plays a pivotal role for performance optimization in wireless networks. Unfortunately, typical resource allocation problems are mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems, which are NP-hard. Machine learning based methods recently emerge as a disruptive way to obtain near-optimal performance for MINLP problems with affordable computational complexity. However, they suffer from severe performance deterioration when the network parameters change, which commonly happens in practice and can be characterized as the task mismatch issue. In this paper, we propo…
Wireless edge is about distributing intelligence to the wireless devices wherein the distribution of accurate time reference is essential for time-critical machine-type communication (cMTC). In 5G-based cMTC, enabling time synchronization in the wireless edge means moving beyond the current synchronization needs and solutions in 5G radio access. In this article, we analyze the device-level synchronization needs of potential cMTC applications: industrial automation, power distribution, vehicular communication, and live audio/video production. We present an over-the-air (OTA) synchronization sch…
Digital twins have shown a great potential in supporting the development of wireless networks. They are virtual representations of 5G/6G systems enabling the design of machine learning and optimization-based techniques. Field data replication is one of the critical aspects of building a simulation-based twin, where the objective is to calibrate the simulation to match field performance measurements. Since wireless networks involve a variety of key performance indicators (KPIs), the replication process becomes a multi-objective optimization problem in which the purpose is to minimize the error …
We propose a new robust distributed linearly constrained beamformer which utilizes a set of linear equality constraints to reduce the cross power spectral density matrix to a block-diagonal form. The proposed beamformer has a convenient objective function for use in arbitrary distributed network topologies while having identical performance to a centralized implementation. Moreover, the new optimization problem is robust to relative acoustic transfer function (RATF) estimation errors and to target activity detection (TAD) errors. Two variants of the proposed beamformer are presented and evalua…
THz transmissions suffer from pointing errors due to antenna misalignment and incur higher path loss from the molecular absorption in addition to the channel fading. In this paper, we employ an amplify-and-forward (AF) dual-hop relaying to mitigate the effect of pointing errors and extend the range of the THz wireless system for backhaul connectivity. We provide statistical analysis on the performance of the considered system by deriving analytical expressions for the outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and a lower bound on the ergodic capacit…
Location information is often used as a proxy to infer the performance of a wireless communication link. Using a very simple model, this letter unveils a basic statistical relation between the location estimation uncertainty and wireless link reliability. First, a Cramér-Rao bound for the localization error is derived. Then, wireless link reliability is characterized by how likely the outage probability is to be above a target threshold. We show that the reliability is sensitive to location errors, especially when the channel statistics are also sensitive to the location. Finally, we highlight…

The optical wireless communication (OWC) with the intensity modulation (IM), requires the modulated radio frequency (RF) signal to be real and non-negative. To satisfy the requirements, this paper proposes two types of mixed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (X-OFDM) waveform. The Hermitian symmetry (HS) character of the sub-carriers in the frequency domain, guarantees the signal in the time domain to be real, which reduces the spectral efficiency to $1/2$. For the odd sub-carriers in the frequency domain, the signal in the time domain after the inverse fast fourier transform (IFFT) i…
Recent research investigates the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying for mixed radio frequency (RF) and terahertz (THz) wireless links with zero-boresight pointing errors. In this letter, we analyze the performance of a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying for the RF-THz link to interface the access network on the RF technology with wireless THz transmissions. We develop probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end SNR for the relay-assisted system in terms of bivariate Fox's H function considering $α$-$μ$ fading for the THz system with n…
Interleaving is a mechanism universally used in wireless access technologies to alleviate the effect of channel correlation. In spite of its wide adoption, to the best of our knowledge, there are no analytical models proposed so far. In this paper we fill this void proposing three different models of interleaving. Two of these models are based on numerical algorithms while one of them allows for closed-form expression for packet error probability. Although we use block codes with hard decoding to specify the models our modeling principles are applicable to all forward error correction codes as…
The channel modeling of unnamed aerial vehicle (UAV)-based free-space optical (FSO) links with nonzero boresight pointing error is the subject of this paper. In particular, utilizing log-normal turbulence model, we propose a novel closed-form statistical channel model for UAV-based FSO links that takes into account the effect of nonzero boresight pointing errors. Subsequently, utilizing Gamma-Gamma turbulence model, we propose a novel channel characterization for such links that is valid under moderate to strong turbulence conditions. The accuracy of the proposed models is verified via Monte-C…
The accurate and low-cost localization of sensors using a wireless sensor network is critically required in a wide range of today's applications. We propose a novel, robust maximum likelihood-type method for distributed cooperative received signal strength-based localization in wireless sensor networks. To cope with mixed LoS/NLoS conditions, we model the measurements using a two-component Gaussian mixture model. The relevant channel parameters, including the reference path loss, the path loss exponent and the variance of the measurement error, for both LoS and NLoS conditions, are assumed to …
This work investigates the temporal dispersion of a wireless terahertz communication signal caused by reflection from a rough (diffuse) surface, and its subsequent impact on symbol error rate versus data rate. Broadband measurements of diffuse reflectors using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy were used to establish and validate a scattering model that uses stochastic methods to describe the effects of surface roughness on the phase and amplitude of a reflected terahertz signal, expressed as a communication channel transfer function. The modeled channel was used to simulate a quadrature phase…
A theoretical framework and numerical simulations quantifying the impact of atmospheric group velocity dispersion on wireless terahertz communication link error rate were developed based upon experimental work. We present, for the first time, predictions of symbol error rate as a function of link distance, signal bandwidth, signal-to-noise ratio, and atmospheric conditions, revealing that long-distance, broadband terahertz communication systems may be limited by inter-symbol interference stemming from group velocity dispersion, rather than attenuation. In such dispersion limited links, increas…

Conventional wireless techniques are becoming inadequate for beyond fifth-generation (5G) networks due to latency and bandwidth considerations. To improve the error performance and throughput of wireless communication systems, we propose physical layer network coding (PNC) in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted environment. We consider an IRS-aided butterfly network, where we propose an algorithm for obtaining the optimal IRS phases. Also, analytic expressions for the bit error rate (BER) are derived. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly improve…

We consider a many-to-one wireless architecture for federated learning at the network edge, where multiple edge devices collaboratively train a model using local data. The unreliable nature of wireless connectivity, together with constraints in computing resources at edge devices, dictates that the local updates at edge devices should be carefully crafted and compressed to match the wireless communication resources available and should work in concert with the receiver. Thus motivated, we propose SGD-based bandlimited coordinate descent algorithms for such settings. Specifically, for the wirel…
We present Quantum Belief Propagation (QBP), a Quantum Annealing (QA) based decoder design for Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) error control codes, which have found many useful applications in Wi-Fi, satellite communications, mobile cellular systems, and data storage systems. QBP reduces the LDPC decoding to a discrete optimization problem, then embeds that reduced design onto quantum annealing hardware. QBP's embedding design can support LDPC codes of block length up to 420 bits on real state-of-the-art QA hardware with 2,048 qubits. We evaluate performance on real quantum annealer hardware, …
