The $k$-power domination problem is a problem in graph theory, which has applications in many areas. However, it is hard to calculate the exact $k$-power domination number since determining k-power domination number of a generic graph is a NP-complete problem. We determine the exact $k$-power domination number in two graphs which have the same number of vertices and edges: pseudofractal scale-free web and Sierpiński gasket. The $k$-power domination number becomes 1 for $k\ge2$ in the Sierpiński gasket, while the $k$-power domination number increases at an exponential rate with regard to the number of vertices in the pseudofractal scale-free web. The scale-free property may account for the difference in the behavior of two graphs.
For $c\in \mathbb{R}^{+}\cup \{\infty \}$ and a graph $G$, a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,c\}$ is called a $c$-self dominating function of $G$ if for every vertex $u\in V(G)$, $f(u)\geq c$ or $\max\{f(v):v\in N_{G}(u)\}\geq 1$ where $N_{G}(u)$ is the neighborhood of $u$ in $G$. The minimum weight $w(f)=\sum _{u\in V(G)}f(u)$ of a $c$-self dominating function $f$ of $G$ is called the $c$-self domination number of $G$. The $c$-self domination concept is a common generalization of three domination-type invariants; (original) domination, total domination and Roman domination. In this paper, w…
In this paper, we define a new domination-like invariant of graphs. Let $\mathbb{R}^{+}$ be the set of non-negative numbers. Let $c\in \mathbb{R}^{+}-\{0\}$ be a number, and let $G$ be a graph. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{+}$ is a $c$-self-dominating function of $G$ if for every $u\in V(G)$, $f(u)\geq c$ or $\max\{f(v):v\in N_{G}(u)\}\geq 1$. The $c$-self-domination number $γ^{c}(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $γ^{c}(G):=\min\{\sum_{u\in V(G)}f(u):f$ is a $c$-self-dominating function of $G\}$. Then $γ^{1}(G)$, $γ^{\infty }(G)$ and $γ^{\frac{1}{2}}(G)$ are equal to the domination number…
In this paper, we provide a new upper bound for the alpha-domination number. This result generalises the well-known Caro-Roditty bound for the domination number of a graph. The same probabilistic construction is used to generalise another well-known upper bound for the classical domination in graphs. We also prove similar upper bounds for the alpha-rate domination number, which combines the concepts of alpha-domination and k-tuple domination.
We consider two general frameworks for multiple domination, which are called <r,s>-domination and parametric domination. They generalise and unify {k}-domination, k-domination, total k-domination and k-tuple domination. In this paper, known upper bounds for the classical domination are generalised for the <r,s>-domination and parametric domination numbers. These generalisations imply new upper bounds for the {k}-domination and total k-domination numbers. Also, we study threshold functions, which impose additional restrictions on the minimum vertex degree, and present new upper bounds for the a…
In this paper, we study the behaviour of the generalized power domination number of a graph by small changes on the graph, namely edge and vertex deletion and edge contraction. We prove optimal bounds for $γ\_{p,k}(G-e)$, $γ\_{p,k}(G/e)$ and for $γ\_{p,k}(G-v)$ in terms of $γ\_{p,k}(G)$, and give examples for which these bounds are tight. We characterize all graphs for which $γ\_{p,k}(G-e) = γ\_{p,k}(G)+1$ for any edge $e$. We also consider the behaviour of the propagation radius of graphs by similar modifications.
A dominating set $D$ for a graph $G$ is a subset of $V(G)$ such that any vertex not in $D$ has at least one neighbor in $D$. The domination number $γ(G)$ is the size of a minimum dominating set in $G$. Vizing's conjecture from 1968 states that for the Cartesian product of graphs $G$ and $H$, $γ(G) γ(H) \leq γ(G \Box H)$, and Clark and Suen (2000) proved that $γ(G) γ(H) \leq 2γ(G \Box H)$. In this paper, we modify the approach of Clark and Suen to prove a variety of similar bounds related to total and paired domination, and also extend these bounds to the $n$-Cartesian product of graphs $A^1$ t…
The domination multisubdivision number of a nonempty graph $G$ was defined as the minimum positive integer $k$ such that there exists an edge which must be subdivided $k$ times to increase the domination number of $G$. Similarly we define the total domination multisubdivision number msd$_{γ_t}(G)$ of a graph $G$ and we show that for any connected graph $G$ of order at least two, msd$_{γ_t}(G)\leq 3.$ We show that for trees the total domination multisubdivision number is equal to the known total domination subdivision number. We also determine the total domination multisubdivision number for so…
The game domination number is a graph invariant that arises from a game, which is related to graph domination in a similar way as the game chromatic number is related to graph coloring. In this paper we show that verifying whether the game domination number of a graph is bounded by a given integer is PSPACE-complete. This contrasts the situation of the game coloring problem whose complexity is still unknown.
Let $k$ be a positive integer and $G=(V,E)$ be a graph of minimum degree at least $k-1$. A function $f:V\rightarrow \{-1,1\}$ is called a \emph{signed $k$-dominating function} of $G$ if $\sum_{u\in N_G[v]}f(u)\geq k$ for all $v\in V$. The \emph{signed $k$-domination number} of $G$ is the minimum value of $\sum_{v\in V}f(v)$ taken over all signed $k$-dominating functions of $G$. The \emph{signed total $k$-dominating function} and \emph{signed total $k$-domination number} of $G$ can be similarly defined by changing the closed neighborhood $N_G[v]$ to the open neighborhood $N_G(v)$ in the definit…
We identify the mean growth of the independence number of random binary search trees and random recursive trees and show normal fluctuations around their means. Similarly we also show normal limit laws for the domination number and variations of it for these two cases of random tree models. Our results are an application of a recent general theorem of Holmgren and Janson on fringe trees in these two random tree models.
In a graph $G$, an efficient dominating set is a subset $D$ of vertices such that $D$ is an independent set and each vertex outside $D$ has exactly one neighbor in $D$. The Minimum Weight Efficient Dominating Set (Min-WED) problem asks for an efficient dominating set of total minimum weight in a given vertex-weighted graph; the Maximum Weight Efficient Dominating Set (Max-WED) problem is defined similarly. The Min-WED/Max-WED is known to be $NP$-complete for $P_7$-free graphs, and is known to be polynomial time solvable for $P_5$-free graphs. However, the computational complexity of the Min-WE…
The Maker-Breaker domination game is played on a graph $G$ by Dominator and Staller. The players alternatively select a vertex of $G$ that was not yet chosen in the course of the game. Dominator wins if at some point the vertices he has chosen form a dominating set. Staller wins if Dominator cannot form a dominating set. In this paper we introduce the Maker-Breaker domination number $γ_{\rm MB}(G)$ of $G$ as the minimum number of moves of Dominator to win the game provided that he has a winning strategy and is the first to play. If Staller plays first, then the corresponding invariant is denot…
Let $G$ be a graph and let $S\subseteq V(G)$. The set $S$ is a double outer-independent dominating set of $G$ if $|N[v]\cap D|\geq2$, for all $v\in V(G)$, and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Similarly, $S$ is a $2$-outer-independent dominating set, if every vertex from $V(G)\setminus S$ has at least two neighbors in $S$ and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Finally, $S$ is a total outer-independent dominating set if every vertex from $V(G)$ has a neighbor in $S$ and the complement of $S$ is an independent set. The double, total or $2$-outer-independent domination number of $G$ is the smalles…
We show that every connected induced subgraph of a graph $G$ is dominated by an induced connected split graph if and only if $G$ is $\cal{C}$-free, where $\cal{C}$ is a set of six graphs which includes $P_7$ and $C_7$, and each containing an induced $P_5$. A similar characterisation is shown for the class of graphs which are dominated by induced complete split graphs. Motivated by these results, we study structural descriptions of some classes of $\cal{C}$-free graphs. In particular, we give structural descriptions for the class of ($P_7$,$C_7$,$C_4$,gem)-free graphs and for the class of ($P_7…
We consider a generic algorithmic paradigm that we call progressive exploration, which can be used to develop simple and efficient parameterized graph algorithms. We identify two model-theoretic properties that lead to efficient progressive algorithms, namely variants of the Helly property and stability. We demonstrate our approach by giving linear-time fixed-parameter algorithms for the distance-r dominating set problem (parameterized by the solution size) in a wide variety of restricted graph classes, such as powers of nowhere dense classes, map graphs, and (for $r=1$) biclique-free graphs. …
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$, whose minimum vertex degree is at least $k$. A subset $S$ of vertices in $G$ is a $k$-tuple total dominating set if every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to at least $k$ vertices in $S$. The minimum cardinality of a $k$-tuple total dominating set of $G$ is the $k$-tuple total domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_{\times k,t}(G)$. Henning and Yeo in \cite{hen} proved that if $G$ is a cubic graph different from the Heawood graph, $γ_{\times 2, t}(G) \leq \frac{5}{6}n$, and this bound is sharp. Similarly, a $k$-tuple dominating set is a subset $S$ of vertic…
A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ$-vertex critical if the domination numbers $γ(G)$ of $G$ is $k$ and $γ(G - v) < k$ for any vertex $v$ of $G$. Similarly, A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-$γ_{c}$-vertex critical if the connected domination numbers $γ_{c}(G)$ of $G$ is $k$ and $γ_{c}(G - v) < k$ for any vertex $v$ of $G$. The problem of interest is to determine whether or not $2$-connected $k$-$γ$-vertex critical graphs are Hamiltonian. In this paper, for all $k \geq 3$, we provide a $2$-connected $k$-$γ$-vertex critical graph which is non-Hamiltonian. We prove that every $2$-connected $3$-$γ$-vert…
The domination game is played on a graph $G$ by two players, named Dominator and Staller. They alternatively select vertices of $G$ such that each chosen vertex enlarges the set of vertices dominated before the move on it. Dominator's goal is that the game is finished as soon as possible, while Staller wants the game to last as long as possible. It is assumed that both play optimally. Game 1 and Game 2 are variants of the game in which Dominator and Staller has the first move, respectively. The game domination number $γ_g(G)$, and the Staller-start game domination number $γ_g'(G)$, is the numb…
Given a simple, finite graph with vertex set $V(G)$, we define a zero forcing set of $G$ as follows. Choose $S\subseteq V(G)$ and color all vertices of $S$ blue and all vertices in $V(G) - S$ white. The color change rule is if $w$ is the only white neighbor of blue vertex $v$, then we change the color of $w$ from white to blue. If after applying the color change rule as many times as possible eventually every vertex of $G$ is blue, we call $S$ a zero forcing set of $G$. $Z(G)$ denotes the minimum cardinality of a zero forcing set. Davila and Henning proved in \cite{zerocubic} that for any claw…
Let $G$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V$ and edge set $E$, and let $S \subseteq V$. The \emph{open neighborhood} of $v \in V$, $N(v)$, is the set of vertices adjacent to $v$; the \emph{closed neighborhood} is given by $N[v] = N(v) \cup \{v\}$. The \emph{open neighborhood} of $S$, $N(S)$, is the union of the open neighborhoods of vertices in $S$, and the \emph{closed neighborhood} of $S$ is $N[S] = S \cup N(S)$. The sets $ \mathcal{P}^i(S), i \geq 0$, of vertices \emph{monitored} by $S$ at the $i^{\ {th}}$ step are given by $\mathcal{P}^0(S) = N[S]$ and $\mathcal{P}^{i+1}(S) = \mathcal{P}^…
For a graph $G,$ we consider $D \subset V(G)$ to be a porous exponential dominating set if $1\le \sum_{d \in D}$ $\left( \frac{1}{2} \right)^{\text{dist}(d,v) -1}$ for every $v \in V(G),$ where dist$(d,v)$ denotes the length of the smallest $dv$ path. Similarly, $D \subset V(G)$ is a non-porous exponential dominating set is $1\le \sum_{d \in D} \left( \frac{1}{2} \right)^{\overline{\text{dist}}(d,v) -1}$ for every $v \in V(G),$ where $\overline{\text{dist}}(d,v)$ represents the length of the shortest $dv$ path with no internal vertices in $D.$ The porous and non-porous exponential dominating n…
In the $(a,b)$-biased Maker-Breaker domination game, two players alternately select unplayed vertices in a graph $G$ such that Dominator selects $a$ and Staller selects $b$ vertices per move. Dominator wins if the vertices he selected during the game form a dominating set of $G$, while Staller wins if she can prevent Dominator from achieving this goal. Given a positive integer $b$, Dominator's threshold, $\textrm{a}_b$, is the minimum $a$ such that Dominator wins the $(a,b)$-biased game on $G$ when he starts the game. Similarly, $\textrm{a}'_b$ denotes the minimum $a$ such that Dominator wins …
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and size $m$ and let $k\geq 1$ be an integer. A $k$-tuple total dominating set in $G$ is called a $k$-tuple total restrained dominating set of $G$ if each vertex $x\in V(G)-S$ is adjacent to at least $k$ vertices of $V(G)-S$. The minimum number of vertices of a such sets in $G$ are the $k$-tuple total restrained domination number $γ_{\times k,t}^{r}(G)$ of $G$. The maximum number of classes of a partition of $V(G)$ such that its all classes are $k$-tuple total restrained dominating sets in $G$, is called the $k$-tuple total restrained domatic number of $G$. In t…

A total Roman dominating function on a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ such that every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=0$ is adjacent to some vertex $u$ with $f(u)=2$, and the subgraph of $G$ induced by the set of all vertices $w$ such that $f(w)>0$ has no isolated vertices. The weight of $f$ is $Σ_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$. The total Roman domination number $γ_{tR}(G)$ is the minimum weight of a total Roman dominating function on $G$. A graph $G$ is $k$-$γ_{tR}$-edge-critical if $γ_{tR}(G+e)<γ_{tR}(G)=k$ for every edge $e\in E(\overline{G})\neq\emptyset $, and $k$-$γ_{tR}$-edge-supercritic…
A sequence of vertices in a graph $G$ with no isolated vertices is called a total dominating sequence if every vertex in the sequence totally dominates at least one vertex that was not totally dominated by preceding vertices in the sequence, and, at the end all vertices of $G$ are totally dominated (by definition a vertex totally dominates its neighbors). The maximum length of a total dominating sequence is called the Grundy total domination number, $γ_{\rm gr}^t(G)$, of $G$, as introduced in [B. Brešar, M.A. Henning, and D. F. Rall, Total dominating sequences in graphs, Discrete Math. 339 (20…
Locally finite self-similar graphs with bounded geometry and without bounded geometry as well as non-locally finite self-similar graphs are characterized by the structure of their cell graphs. Geometric properties concerning the volume growth and distances in cell graphs are discussed. The length scaling factor $ν$ and the volume scaling factor $μ$ can be defined similarly to the corresponding parameters of continuous self-similar sets. There are different notions of growth dimensions of graphs. For a rather general class of self-similar graphs it is proved that all these dimensions coincide a…
