Edge states emerge in diverse areas of science, offering new opportunities for the development of novel electronic or optoelectronic devices, sound and light propagation controls in acoustics and photonics. Previous experiments on edge states and exploration of topological phases in photonics were carried out mostly in linear regimes, but the current belief is that nonlinearity introduces new striking features into physics of edge states, lead-ing to the formation of edge solitons, optical isolation, and topological lasing, to name a few. Here we experimentally demonstrate edge solitons at the zigzag edge of a reconfigurable photonic graphene lattice created via the effect of electromagneti-cally induced transparency in an atomic vapor cell with controllable nonlinearity . To obtain edge solitons, Raman gain was introduced to compensate strong absorption experienced by the edge state during propagation. Our observations pave the way to ex-perimental exploration of topological photonics on nonlinear, reconfigurable platform.
Atomic layer graphene possesses wavelength-insensitive ultrafast saturable absorption, which can be exploited as a full-band mode locker. Taking advantage of the wide band saturable absorption of the graphene, we demonstrate experimentally that wide range (1570 nm - 1600nm) continuous wavelength tunable dissipative solitons could be formed in an erbium doped fiber laser mode locked with few layer graphene.
We generalize the concept of nonlinear periodic structures to systems that show arbitrary spacetime variations of the refractive index. Nonlinear pulse propagation through these spatiotemporal photonic crystals can be described, for shallow nonstationary gratings, by coupled mode equations which are a generalization of the traditional equations used for stationary photonic crystals. Novel gap soliton solutions are found by solving a modified massive Thirring model. They represent the missing link between the gap solitons in static photonic crystals and resonance solitons found in dynamic grati…
We demonstrate soliton-effect pulse compression in mm-long photonic crystal waveguides resulting from strong anomalous dispersion and self-phase modulation. Compression from 3ps to 580fs, at low pulse energies(~10pJ), is measured via autocorrelation.
We introduce solitons supported by Bessel photonic lattices in cubic nonlinear media. We show that the cylindrical geometry of the lattice, with several concentric rings, affords unique soliton properties and dynamics. In particular, besides the lowest-order solitons trapped in the center of the lattice, we find soliton families trapped at different lattice rings. Such solitons can be set into controlled rotation inside each ring, thus featuring novel types of in-ring and inter-ring soliton interactions.
An effort was conducted to numerically determine, using the Nonlinear Schrodinger Split-Step Fourier method, if using cross phase modulation could cause temporal soliton pulse propagation in a silicon slow-light photonic crystal waveguide shorter than a millimeter. The simulations demonstrated that due to the higher powers and shorter scales of photonic crystals, two-photon absorption would cause an optical soliton pulse to be extremely dissipative. The model demonstrated, however, that by utilizing cross-phase modulation, it is possible to sustain a compressed soliton pulse within a silicon p…
Vector soliton operation of erbium-doped fiber lasers mode locked with atomic layer graphene was experimentally investigated. Either the polarization rotation or polarization locked vector dissipative solitons were experimentally obtained in a dispersion-managed cavity fiber laser with large net cavity dispersion, while in the anomalous dispersion cavity fiber laser, the phase locked NLSE solitons and induced NLSE soliton were experimentally observed. The vector soliton operation of the fiber lasers unambiguously confirms the polarization insensitive saturable absorption of the atomic layer gr…
We report systematic studies of plasmonic and photonic guiding modes in large-area chemical-vapor-deposition-grown graphene on nanostructured silicon substrates. Light interaction in graphene with substrate photonic crystals can be classified into four distinct regimes depending on the photonic crystal lattice constant and the various modal wavelengths (i.e. plasmonic, photonic and free-space). By optimizing the design of the substrate, these resonant modes can magnify the graphene absorption in infrared wavelength, for efficient modulators, filters, sensors and photodetectors on silicon photo…
We study theoretically nonlinear propagation of light in a graphene monolayer. We show that the large intrinsic nonlinearity of graphene at optical frequencies enables the formation of quasi one-dimensional self-guided beams (spatial solitons) featuring subwavelength widths at moderate electric-field peak intensities. We also demonstrate a novel class of nonlinear self-confined modes resulting from the hybridization of surface plasmon polaritons with graphene optical solitons.
We analyze the existence, stability, and mobility of gap solitons in a periodic photonic structure with nonlocal nonlinearity. Within the Bragg region of band gaps, gap solitons exhibit better stability and higher mobility due to the combinations of non-locality effect and the oscillation nature of Bloch waves. Using linear stability analysis and calculating the Peierls-Nabarro potentials, we demonstrate that gap solitons can revive a non-trivial elastic-like collision even in the periodic systems with the help of nonlocal nonlinearity. Such interesting behaviors of gap solitons in nonlocal no…
We have developed an analytical model based on the perturbation theory in order to study the optical propagation of two successive intense solitons in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers filled with Raman-active gases. Based on the time delay between the two solitons, we have found that the trailing soliton dynamics can experience unusual nonlinear phenomena such as spectral and temporal soliton oscillations and transport towards the leading soliton. The overall dynamics can lead to a spatiotemporal modulation of the refractive index with a uniform temporal period and a uniform or chirped spat…
We discuss soliton control in reconfigurable optically-induced photonic lattices created by three interfering beams. We reveal novel dynamical regimes for strongly localized solitons, including binary switching and soliton revivals through resonant wave mixing.
We address the formation and propagation of multi-spot soliton packets in saturable Kerr nonlinear media with an imprinted harmonic transverse modulation of the refractive index. We show that, in sharp contrast to homogeneous media where stable multi-peaked solitons do not exist, the photonic lattices support stable higher-order structures in the form of soliton packets, or soliton trains. Intuitively, such trains can be viewed as made of several lowest order solitons bound together with appropriate relative phases and their existence as stable objects puts forward the concept of compact manip…
We reveal the existence of dynamically stable composite topological solitons in Bessel photonic lattices imprinted in focusing Kerr-type nonlinear media. The new stable composite solitons are made of a vortex-ring with unit topological charge incoherently coupled to a fundamental soliton. The stabilization of the otherwise highly azimuthally unstable vortex-rings is provided under suitable conditions, which we study in detail, by cross-phase-modulation coupling with the fundamental soliton companion.
We propose an optical trapping technique in which a fundamental soliton traps an ultrashort small amplitude radiation in a symmetric hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with a noble gas, preventing its dispersion. The system is Raman- and plasma-free. Trapping is due to the cross phase modulation effect between the two pulses. The trapped radiation inside the soliton-induced potential will oscillate periodically due to the shock effect, similar to the motion of a mechanical pendulum.
We address Bessel photonic lattices of radial symmetry imprinted in cubic Kerr-type nonlinear media and show that they support families of stable dipole-mode solitons featuring two out-of-phase light spots located in different lattice rings. We show that the radial symmetry of the Bessel lattices afford a variety of unique soliton dynamics including controlled radiation-free rotation of the dipole-mode solitons.
The red shifted solitonic resonant radiation is a fascinating phase matching phenomenon that occurs when an optical pulse, launched in the normal dispersion regime of photonic crystal fiber, radiates across the zero dispersion wavelength. The formation of such phase-matched radiation is independent of the generation of any optical soliton and mainly governed by the leading edge of input pump which forms a shock front. The radiation is generated at the anomalous dispersion regime and found to be confined both in time and frequency domain. We experimentally investigate the formation of such radi…
We investigate the surface plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) in semi-infinite graphene sheet arrays. The surface soliton is formed as the SPPs tunneling is inhibited by the graphene nonlinearity, and meanwhile the incident power should be above a threshold value. Thanks to the strong confinement of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on graphene, the effective width of surface PLSs can be squeezed into deep-subwavelength scale of ~ 0.001λ. Based on the stable propagation of surface PLSs, we find that the light propagation can be switched from the array boundary to the inner graphene sheets by re…
We investigate dissipative nonlinear dynamics in graphene-based active metamaterials composed of randomly dispersed graphene nano-flakes embedded within an externally pumped gain medium. We observe that graphene saturable nonlinearity produces a sub-critical bifurcation of nonlinear modes, enabling self-organization of the emitted radiation into several dissipative soliton structures with distinct topological charges. We systematically investigate the existence domains of such nonlinear waves and their spatio-temporal dynamics, finding that soliton vortices are unstable, thus enabling self-org…
Perfect, narrow-band absorption is achieved in an asymmetric 1D photonic crystal with a monolayer graphene defect. Thanks to the large third order nonlinearity of graphene and field localization in the defect layer we demonstrate the possibility to achieve controllable, saturable absorption for the pump frequency.
We demonstrate interesting and previously unforeseen properties of a pair of gap solitons in a resonant photonic crystal which are predicted and explained in a physically transparent form using both analytical and numerical methods. The most important result is the fact that an oscillating gap soliton created by the presence of a localized population inversion inside the crystal can be manipulated by means of a proper choice of bit rate, phase and amplitude modulation. Developing this idea, we are able to obtain qualitatively different regimes of a resonant photonic crystal operation. In parti…
We present a theoretical study of the spatial Goos-Hänchen shift occurring at the interface between two different photonic graphene lattices. Numerical simulations of light propagation in such a wave guiding system are also presented to corroborate our findings.
We demonstrate second-band bright vortex-array solitons in photonic lattices. This constitutes the first experimental observation of higher-band solitons in any 2D periodic system. These solitons possess complex intensity and phase structures, yet they can be excited by a simple highly-localized vortex-ring beam. Finally, we show that the linear diffraction of such beams exhibits preferential transport along the lattice axes.
Soliton fusion is a fascinating and delicate phenomenon that manifests itself in optical fibers in case of interaction between co-propagating solitons with small temporal and wavelengths separation. We show that the mechanism of acceleration of trailing soliton by dispersive waves radiated from the preceding one provides necessary conditions for soliton fusion at the advanced stage of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers. As a result of fusion large intensity robust light structures arise and propagate over significant distances. In presence of small random noise the delicate c…
Drawing inspiration from bilayer graphene, this paper introduces its photonic analog comprising two stacked graphene-like photonic crystals, that are coupled in the near-field through spoof surface plasmons. Beyond the twist degree of freedom that can radically alter the band structure of the bilayer photonic graphene, the photonic dispersion can be also tailored via the interlayer coupling which exhibits an exponential dependence on the distance between the two photonic crystals. We theoretically, numerically, and experimentally characterize the band structures of AA- and AB-stacked bilayer p…
The possibility of soliton self-compression of ultrashort laser pulses down to the few-cycle regime in photonic crystal fibers is numerically investigated. We show that efficient sub-two-cycle temporal compression of nanojoule-level 800 nm pulses can be achieved by employing short (typically 5-mm-long) commercially available photonic crystal fibers and pulse durations of around 100 fs, regardless of initial linear chirp, and without the need of additional dispersion compensation techniques. We envisage applications in a new generation of compact and efficient sub-two cycle laser pulse sources.
The generation of dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators has provided a route to compact frequency combs of high repetition rate, which have already been employed for optical frequency synthesizers, ultrafast ranging, coherent telecommunication and dual-comb spectroscopy. Silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) microresonators are promising for photonic integrated soliton microcombs. Yet to date, soliton formation in Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonators at electronically detectable repetition rates, typically less than 100 GHz, is hindered by the requirement of external power amplifiers, due to the…
We show theoretically that a photonic topological insulator can support edge solitons that are strongly self-localized and propagate unidirectionally along the lattice edge. The photonic topological insulator consists of a Floquet lattice of coupled helical waveguides, in a medium with local Kerr nonlinearity. The soliton behavior is strongly affected by the topological phase of the linear lattice. The topologically nontrivial phase gives a continuous family of solitons, while the topologically trivial phase gives an embedded soliton that occurs at a single power, and arises from a self-induce…
We address soliton transmission and reflection in nonlinear photonic lattices embedded into uniform Kerr nonlinear media. We show that by introducing disorder into the guiding lattice channels, one may achieve soliton transmission even under conditions where regular lattices reflect the input beam completely. In contrast, in the parameter range where the lattice is almost transparent for incoming solitons, disorder may induce a significant reflection.
We propose the use of silicon graphene waveguides to implement a tunable broadband microwave photonics phase shifte based on integrated ring cavities. Numerical computation results show the feasibility for broadband operation over 40 GHz bandwidth and full 360 degree radiofrequency phase-shift with a modest voltage excursion of 0.12 volt.
Photonic crystal slabs have been widely used in nanophotonics for light confinement, dispersion engineering, nonlinearity enhancement, and other unusual effects arising from their structural periodicity. Sub-micron device sizes and mode volumes are routine for silicon-based photonic crystal slabs, however spectrally they are limited to operate in the near infrared. Here, we show that two single-layer graphene sheets allow silicon photonic crystal slabs with submicron periodicity to operate in the terahertz regime, with an extreme 100x wavelength reduction and excellent out-of-plane confinement…
We suggest a novel concept in the soliton switching based on the Bloch-wave filtering in periodic photonic structures. Taking a binary waveguide array as an example, we demonstrate that spatial solitons that belong to different spectral band gaps can be selectively reflected from or transmitted through an engineered defect, which acts as a low or high-pass filter for Bloch waves.
Controlling artificial Pearcey and swallowtail beams allows realizing caustic lattices in nonlinear photosensitive media at very low light intensities. We examine their functionality as 2D and 3D waveguiding structures, and show the potential of exploiting these lattices as a linear beam splitter, which we name a Pearcey-Y-splitter. For symmetrized Pearcey beams as auto-focusing beams, the formation of solitons in focusing nonlinearity is observed. Our original approach represents the first realization of caustic photonic lattices and can directly be applied in signal processing, microscopy an…
We theoretically study discrete photonic lattices in more than three dimensions and point out that such systems can exist in continuous three-dimensional (3D) space. We study discrete diffraction in the linear regime, and predict the existence of four-dimensional (4D) tesseract solitons in nonlinear 4D periodic photonic lattices. Finally, we propose a design towards a potential realization of such periodic 4D lattices in experiments.
Recently, optical soliton propagation in an intrinsic nonlinear graphene monolayer configuration has been discovered. However, optical soliton behavior in a free-standing graphene monolayer with defects has not yet been studied. The objective of this article is to employ the generalized finite- difference time-domain (G-FDTD) method to efficiently simulate bright optical solitons, illustrating propagation of the electric field distribution in a free-standing nonlinear layer with variation in nonlinearity along its width. These variations of nonlinearity along the width represent graphene impur…
We investigate the transmission of densely multiplexed solitons using a photonic integrated chip and the nonlinear Fourier-transform and analyze required launch conditions, the effect of (de-)multiplexing and noise on the nonlinear spectrum, and equalization techniques that can be used to enhance the transmission performance.
The discovery of a new type of solitons occuring in periodic systems without photonic bandgaps is reported. Solitons are nonlinear self-trapped wave packets. They have been extensively studied in many branches of physics. Solitons in periodic systems, which have become the mainstream of soliton research in the past decade, are localized states supported by photonic bandgaps. In this Letter, we report the discovery of a new type of solitons located at the Dirac point beyond photonic bandgaps. The Dirac point is a conical singularity of a photonic band structure where wave motion obeys the famou…
We study both theoretically and experimentally the effect of nonlinearity on topologically protected linear interface modes in a photonic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice. It is shown that under either focusing or defocusing nonlinearity, this linear topological mode of the SSH lattice turns into a family of topological gap solitons. These solitons are stable. However, they exhibit only a low amplitude and power and are thus weakly nonlinear, even when the bandgap of the SSH lattice is wide. As a consequence, if the initial beam has modest or high power, it will either delocalize, or evolve …
We demonstrate numerically that partially incoherent light can be trapped in the spectral band gaps of a photonic lattice, creating partially incoherent multi-component spatial optical solitons in a self-defocusing nonlinear periodic medium. We find numerically such incoherent multi-gap optical solitons and discuss how to generate them in experiment by interfering incoherent light beams at the input of a nonlinear periodic medium.
Dissipative solitons rely on the double balance between nonlinearity and dispersion as well as gain and loss have attracted a lot of attention in optics, since it gives rise to ultrashort pulses and broadband frequency combs with good stability and smooth spectral envelopes. Here we observe a novel dissipative solitons in microwave photonics that gives rise to wideband tunable frequency hopping microwave signals with fast frequency switching speed. The dissipative microwave photonic solitions are achieved through the double balance between nonlinear gain saturation and linear filtering as well…
We report the existence of transversely stable soliton trains in optics. These stable soliton trains are found in two-dimensional square photonic lattices when they bifurcate from X-symmetry points with saddle-shaped diffraction inside the first Bloch band and their amplitudes are above a certain threshold. We also show that soliton trains with low amplitudes or bifurcated from edges of the first Bloch band (Gamma and M points) still suffer transverse instability. These results are obtained in the continuous lattice model and further corroborated by the discrete model.
We manipulate optical Tamm states in graphene-based photonics to achieve and steer large magneto-optical effects. Here we report the presence of a giant Faraday rotation via a single graphene layer of atomic thickness while keeping a high transmission. The Faraday rotation is enhanced across the interface between two photonic crystals due to the presence of an interface mode, which presents a strong electromagnetic field confinement at the location of the graphene sheet. Our proposed scheme opens a promising avenue to realize high performance graphene magneto-optical devices that can be extend…
We introduce a scheme of a photonic coupler built of two parallel topological-insulator slab waveguides with the intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity, separated by a gap. Josephson oscillations (JO) of a single edge soliton created in one slab, and of a pair of solitons created in two slabs, are considered. The single soliton jumping between the slabs is subject to quick radiative decay. On the other hand, the JO of the copropagating soliton pair may be essentially more robust, as one soliton can absorb dispersive waves emitted by the other. The most robust JO regime is featured by the pair of solitons…
We predict that a photonic crystal fiber whose strands are filled with a defocusing nonlinear medium can support stable bright and also vortex solitons if the strength of the defocusing nonlinearity grows toward the periphery of the fiber. The domains of soliton existence depend on the transverse growth rate of the filling nonlinearity and nonlinearity of the core. Remarkably, solitons exist even when the core material is linear.
Nonlinear properties of a multi-layer stack of graphene sheets are studied. It is predicted that such a structure may support dissipative plasmon-solitons generated and supported by an external laser radiation. Novel nonlinear equations describing spatial dynamics of the nonlinear plasmons driven by a plane wave in the Otto configuration are derived and the existence of single and multi-hump dissipative solitons in the graphene structure is predicted.
Gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers offer unprecedented opportunities to observe novel nonlinear phenomena. The various properties of gases that can be used to fill these fibers give additional degrees of freedom for investigating nonlinear pulse propagation in a wide range of different media. In this review, we will consider some of the the new nonlinear interactions that have been discovered in recent years, in particular those which are based on soliton dynamics.
We found the self-similar solitary solutions of a recently proposed model for propagation of pulses in gas filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers that includes a plasma induced nonlinearity. As anticipated for a simpler model and using a perturbation analysis, there are indeed stationary solitary waves that accelerate and self-shift to higher frequencies. However, if the plasma nonlinearity strength is large or the pulse amplitudes are small, the solutions have distinguished long tails and decay as they propagate.
We study nonlinear modes in one-dimensional arrays of doped graphene nanodisks with Kerr-type nonlinear response in the presence of an external electric field. We present the theoretical model describing the evolution of the disks' polarizations, taking into account intrinsic graphene losses and dipole-dipole coupling between the graphene nanodisks. We reveal that this nonlinear system can support discrete dissipative scalar solitons of both longitudinal and transverse polarizations, as well as vector solitons composed of two mutually coupled polarization components. We demonstrate the formati…
Optical frequency comb, with precisely controlled spectral lines spanning a broad range, has been the key enabling technology for many scientific breakthroughs. In addition to the traditional implementation based on modelocked lasers, photonic frequency microcombs based on dissipative Kerr and quadratic cavity solitons in high-Q microresonators have become invaluable in applications requiring compact footprint, low cost, good energy efficiency, large comb spacing, and access to nonconventional spectral regions. In this review, we comprehensively examine the recent progress of photonic frequenc…
Efficient conversion of electrical signal to optical signal in nano-photonics enables solid state integration of electronics and photonics. Combination of graphene with photonic crystals is promising for electro-optic modulation. In this paper, we demonstrate that by electrostatic gating a single layer of graphene on top of a photonic crystal cavity, the cavity resonance can be changed significantly. A ~2nm change in the cavity resonance linewidth and almost 400% (6 dB) change in resonance reflectivity is observed. In addition, our analysis shows that a graphene-photonic crystal device can pot…
We study optical solitons in chirped periodic optical lattices whose amplitude or frequency changes in the transverse direction. We discover that soliton propagation in such lattices can be accompanied by the progressive self-bending of the soliton trajectory, and we show that the soliton bending rate and output position can be controlled by varying the lattice depth, as well as the chirp amplitude and frequency modulation rate. This effect has potential applications for controllable soliton steering and routing.
We introduce a new coupled mode theory to model nonlinear Schrödinger equations for contra- propagating Bloch modes that include disorder-induced multiple scattering effects on nonlinear soliton propagation in photonic crystal waveguides. We also derive sub unit-cell coupling coefficients and use these to introduce a generalized length scale associated with each coupling effect. In particular, we define a multiple-scattering length scale that quantifies the spatial extent of a disorder- induced cavity mode. Our numerical simulations of nonlinear pulse propagation are in excellent qualitative a…
Optical isolators are an important building block in photonic computation and communication. In traditional optics, isolators are realized with magneto-optical garnets. However, it remains challenging to incorporate such materials on an integrated platform because of the difficulty in material growth and bulky device footprint. Here, we propose an ultracompact integrated isolator by exploiting graphene's magneto-optical property on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The photonic nonreciprocity is achieved because the cyclotrons in graphene experiencing different optical spin exhibit different re…
We examine the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) in a graphene-substrate system with the presence of external magnetic field. In the quantum Hall regime, we demonstrate that the in-plane and transverse spin-dependent splittings in photonic SHE exhibit different quantized behaviors. The quantized SHE can be described as a consequence of a quantized geometric phase (Berry phase), which corresponds to the quantized spin-orbit interaction. Furthermore, an experimental scheme based on quantum weak value amplification is proposed to detect the quantized SHE in terahertz frequency regime. By incorporat…
We present a high-speed wavelength tunable photonic crystal fiber-based source capable of generating tunable femtosecond solitons in the infrared region. Through measurements and numerical simulation, we show that both the pulsewidth and the spectral width of the output pulses remain nearly constant over the entire tuning range from 860 to 1160 nm. This remarkable behavior is observed even when pump pulses are heavily chirped (7400 fs^2), which allows to avoid bulky compensation optics, or the use of another fiber, for dispersion compensation usually required by the tuning device.
