We investigate the giant planet-metallicity correlation for a homogeneous, unbiased set of 217 hot Jupiters taken from nearly 15 years of wide-field ground-based surveys. We compare the host star metallicity to that of field stars using the Besançon Galaxy model, allowing for a metallicity measurement offset between the two sets. We find that hot Jupiters preferentially orbit metal rich stars. However, we find the correlation consistent, though marginally weaker, for hot Jupiters ($β=0.71^{+0.56}_{-0.34}$) than it is for other longer period gas giant planets from radial velocity surveys. This suggests that the population of hot Jupiters probably formed in a similar process to other gas giant planets, and differ only in their migration histories.
Some Jupiter-mass exoplanets contain $\sim$$100\, M_\oplus$ of metals, well above the $\sim$$10\, M_\oplus$ typically needed in a solid core to trigger giant planet formation by runaway gas accretion. We demonstrate that such `heavy-metal Jupiters' can result from planetary mergers near $\sim$10 au. Multiple cores accreting gas at runaway rates gravitationally perturb one another onto crossing orbits such that the average merger rate equals the gas accretion rate. Concurrent mergers and gas accretion implies the core mass scales with the total planet mass as $M_{\rm core} \propto M^{1/5}$ - he…
Jupiter played an important role in determining the structure and configuration of the Solar System. Whereas hot-Jupiter type exoplanets preferentially form around metal-rich stars, the conditions required for the formation of planets with masses, orbits and eccentricities comparable to Jupiter (Jupiter analogues) are unknown. Using spectroscopic metallicities, we show that stars hosting Jupiter analogues have an average metallicity close to solar, in contrast to their hot-Jupiter and eccentric cool Jupiter counterparts, which orbit stars with super-solar metallicities. Furthermore, the eccent…
We use ground-based and space-based eclipse measurements for the near-infrared ($JHK\!s$) bands and Spitzer 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m bands to construct colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams for hot Jupiters. We compare the results with previous observations of substellar objects and find that hot Jupiters, when corrected for their inflated radii, lie near the black body line and in the same region of the colour magnitude diagrams as brown dwarfs, including low gravity dwarfs that have been previously suggested as exoplanet analogs. We use theoretical emission spectra to investigate the effe…
Discovery of only handful of exoplanets required to establish a correlation between giant planet occurrence and metallicity of their host stars. More than 20 years have already passed from that discovery, however, many questions are still under lively debate: What is the origin of that relation? what is the exact functional form of the giant planet -- metallicity relation (in the metal-poor regime)?, does such a relation exist for terrestrial planets? All these question are very important for our understanding of the formation and evolution of (exo)planets of different types around different t…
The current paradigm to explain the presence of Jupiters with small orbital periods (P $<$ 10 days; hot Jupiters) that involves their formation beyond the snow line following inward migration, has been challenged by recent works that explored the possibility of in situ formation. We aim to test whether stars harbouring hot Jupiters and stars with more distant gas-giant planets show any chemical peculiarity that could be related to different formation processes. Our results show that stars with hot Jupiters have higher metallicities than stars with cool distant gas-giant planets in the metallic…
We find evidence for a strong thermal inversion in the dayside atmosphere of the highly irradiated hot Jupiter WASP-18b (T$_{eq}=2411K$, $M=10.3M_{J}$) based on emission spectroscopy from Hubble Space Telescope secondary eclipse observations and Spitzer eclipse photometry. We demonstrate a lack of water vapor in either absorption or emission at 1.4$μ$m. However, we infer emission at 4.5$μ$m and absorption at 1.6$μ$m that we attribute to CO, as well as a non-detection of all other relevant species (e.g., TiO, VO). The most probable atmospheric retrieval solution indicates a C/O ratio of 1 and a…
Jovian planet formation has been shown to be strongly correlated with host star metallicity, which is thought to be a proxy for disk solids. Observationally, previous works have indicated that jovian planets preferentially form around stars with solar and super solar metallicities. Given these findings, it is challenging to form planets within metal-poor environments, particularly for hot Jupiters that are thought to form via metallicity-dependent core accretion. Although previous studies have conducted planet searches for hot Jupiters around metal-poor stars, they have been limited due to sma…

The high cosmic abundance and the intermediate volatility and chemical properties of sulfur allow the use of sulfur-bearing species as a tracer of the chemical processes in the atmospheres of hot Jupiter exoplanets. Nevertheless, despite its properties and relevance as a tracer of the giant planets' formation history, little attention has been paid to this species in the context of hot Jupiter atmospheres. Here we provide an overview of the abundances of sulfur-bearing species in hot Jupiter atmospheres under different conditions and explore their observability. We use the photochemical kineti…
Transiting exoplanets from the CoRoT space mission. XIII. CoRoT-13b: a dense hot Jupiter in transit around a star with solar metallicity and super-solar lithium content
The high-precision Juno gravitational measurements allow us to infer the structure of Jupiter's deep atmospheric zonal flow. Since this inference is nonunique, it is important to explore the space of possible solutions. In this paper, we consider a model in which Jupiter's deep atmospheric zonal flow is barotropic, or invariant along the direction of the rotation axis, until it is truncated at depth by some dynamical process (e.g., Reynolds stress, Lorentz or viscous force). We calculate the density perturbation produced by the $z$-invariant part of the flow using the thermal wind equation and…
In this paper we develop a differential astrometric framework that is appropriate for a scanning space satellite such as Gaia. We apply it to the first of the GAREQ fields, which is the fruit of dedicated efforts within the Gaia project focused on measuring the relativistic deflection of light close to Jupiter's limb. This provides a preliminary assessment of: a) the observability of the relativistic deflection of light close to Jupiter, and, b) Gaia's astrometric capabilities under extremely difficult conditions such as those around a bright extended object. Inputs to our differential astrome…

We study the emergent spectral fluxes of transiting hot Jupiters, using secondary eclipses from Spitzer. To achieve a large and uniform sample, we have re-analyzed all secondary eclipses for all hot Jupiters observed by Spitzer at 3.6- and/or 4.5 microns. Our sample comprises 457 eclipses of 122 planets, including eclipses of 13 planets not previously published. We use these eclipse depths to calculate the spectral fluxes emergent from the exoplanetary atmospheres, and thereby infer temperature and spectral properties of hot Jupiters. We find that an abrupt rise in brightness temperature, simi…
Measurements of the atmospheric carbon (C) and oxygen (O) relative to hydrogen (H) in hot Jupiters (relative to their host stars) provide insight into their formation location and subsequent orbital migration. Hot Jupiters that form beyond the major volatile (H2O/CO/CO2) ice lines and subsequently migrate post disk-dissipation are predicted have atmospheric carbon-to-oxygen ratios (C/O) near 1 and subsolar metallicities, whereas planets that migrate through the disk before dissipation are predicted to be heavily polluted by infalling O-rich icy planetesimals, resulting in C/O < 0.5 and super-s…
(Abridged) The chemical composition of planetary atmospheres has long been thought to store information regarding where and when a planet accretes its material. Predicting this chemical composition theoretically is a crucial step in linking observational studies to the underlying physics that govern planet formation. As a follow-up to a study of hot Jupiters in our previous work, we present a population of warm Jupiters (semi-major axis between 0.5-4 AU) extracted from the same planetesimal formation population synthesis model as used in our previous work. We compute the astrochemical evolutio…
As of today, hundreds of hot Jupiters have been found, yet the inflated radii of a large fraction of them remain unexplained. It is still unclear whether a single inflation mechanism is enough to explain the entire distribution of radii, or whether a combination of them is needed. We seek to understand the relationship of hot Jupiter radii with stellar irradiation and mass. We also aim to find the intrinsic physical scatter in their radii caused by unobservable parameters. By constructing a hierarchical Bayesian model, we infer the probabilistic relation between planet radius, mass and inciden…
Atmospheric compositions can provide powerful diagnostics of formation and migration histories of planetary systems. We investigate constraints on atmospheric abundances of H$_2$O, Na, and K, in a sample of transiting exoplanets using latest transmission spectra and new H$_2$ broadened opacities of Na and K. Our sample of 19 exoplanets spans from cool mini-Neptunes to hot Jupiters, with equilibrium temperatures between $\sim$300 and 2700 K. Using homogeneous Bayesian retrievals we report atmospheric abundances of Na, K, and H$_2$O, and their detection significances, confirming 6 planets with s…
In systems with detected planets, hot-Jupiters and compact systems of multiple planets are nearly mutually exclusive. We compare the relative occurrence of these two architectures as a fraction of detected planetary systems to determine the role that metallicity plays in planet formation. We show that compact multi-planet systems occur more frequently around stars of increasingly lower metallicities using spectroscopically derived abundances for more than 700 planet hosts. At higher metallicities, compact multi-planet systems comprise a nearly constant fraction of the planet hosts despite the …

Interior modeling of Jupiter and Saturn has advanced to a state where thousands of models are generated that cover the uncertainty space of many parameters. This approach demands a fast method of computing their gravity field and shape. Moreover, the Cassini mission at Saturn and the ongoing Juno mission delivered gravitational harmonics up to J12. Here, we report the expansion of the Theory of Figures, which is a fast method for gravity field and shape computation, to the 7th-order (ToF7), which allows for computation of up to J14. We apply three different codes to compare the accuracy using …
Tracking Advanced Planetary Systems (TAPAS) with HARPS-N. V.: A Massive Jupiter orbiting the very low metallicity giant star BD+03 2562 and a possible planet around HD~103485
We describe the detection of water vapor in the atmosphere of the transiting hot Jupiter KELT-2Ab by treating the star-planet system as a spectroscopic binary with high-resolution, ground-based spectroscopy. We resolve the signal of the planet's motion with deep combined flux observations of the star and the planet. In total, six epochs of Keck NIRSPEC $L$-band observations were obtained, and the full data set was subjected to a cross correlation analysis with a grid of self-consistent atmospheric models. We measure a radial projection of the Keplerian velocity, $K_P$, of 148 $\pm$ 7 km s$^{-1…
The Roasting Marshmallows Program with IGRINS on Gemini South III: Seeing deeper into the metal depleted atmosphere of a gas-giant on the cusp of the hot to ultra-hot Jupiter transition
There is an ongoing debate on whether hot jupiter hosts are more likely to be found in wide binaries with separations of $\gtrsim 100$ AU. In this paper, we search for comoving, very wide companions with separations of $10^3-10^4$ AU for hot jupiter hosts and main-sequence contact binaries in Gaia DR2, and compare the very wide companion fractions with their object-by-object-matched field star samples. We find that $11.9\pm 2.5$% of hot jupiter hosts and $14.1\pm 1.0$% of contact binaries have companions at separations of $10^3-10^4$ AU. While the very wide companion fraction of hot jupiter ho…
