The physics of neutrino-nucleus cross sections is a critical probe of the Standard Model and beyond. A precise understanding is also needed to accurately deduce astrophysical neutrino spectra. At energies above $\sim 5$ GeV, the cross section is dominated by deep inelastic scattering, mediated by weak bosons. In addition, there are subdominant processes where the hadronic coupling is through virtual photons, $γ^\ast$: (on-shell) $W$-boson production (e.g., where the underlying interaction is $ν_\ell + γ^\ast \rightarrow \ell^- + W^+$) and trident production (e.g., where it is $ν+ γ^\ast \rightarrow ν+ \ell_1^- + \ell_2^+$). These processes become increasingly relevant at TeV--PeV energies. We undertake the first systematic approach to these processes (and those with hadronic couplings through virtual $W$ and $Z$ bosons), treating them together, avoiding common approximations, considering all neutrino flavors and final states, and covering the energy range $10\,$--$10^8$ GeV. In particular, we present the first complete calculation of $W$-boson production and the first calculation of trident production at TeV--PeV energies. When we use the same assumptions as in prior work, we recover all of their major results. In a companion paper, we show that these processes should be taken into account for IceCube-Gen2.

Detecting TeV--PeV cosmic neutrinos provides crucial tests of neutrino physics and astrophysics. The statistics of IceCube and the larger proposed IceCube-Gen2 demand calculations of neutrino-nucleus interactions subdominant to deep-inelastic scattering, which is mediated by weak-boson couplings to nuclei. The largest such interactions are W-boson and trident production, which are mediated instead through photon couplings to nuclei. In a companion paper [1], we make the most comprehensive and precise calculations of those interactions at high energies. In this paper, we study their phenomenolo…
We propose to use atmospheric neutrinos as a powerful probe of new physics beyond the Standard Model via neutrino trident production. The final state with double muon tracks simultaneously produced from the same vertex is a distinctive signal at large Cherenkov detectors. We calculate the expected event numbers of trident production in the Standard Model. To illustrate the potential of this process to probe new physics we obtain the sensitivity on new vector/scalar bosons with coupling to muon and tau neutrinos.
We have calculated cross sections for the production of lepton pairs by a neutrino incident on a nucleus using both the equivalent photon approximation, and deep inelastic formalism. We find that production of mixed flavour lepton pairs can have production cross sections as high as 35 times those of the traditional muon pair-production process. Rates are estimated for the SHiP and DUNE intensity frontier experiments. We find that multiple trident production modes, some of which have never been observed, represent observable signals over the lifetime of the detectors. Our estimates indicate tha…
Neutrino trident scattering is a rare Standard Model process where a charged-lepton pair is produced in neutrino-nucleus scattering. To date, only the dimuon final-state has been observed, with around 100 total events, while the other channels are as yet unexplored. In this work, we compute the trident production cross section by performing a complete four-body phase space calculation for different hadronic targets. This provides a correct estimate both of the coherent and the diffractive contributions to these cross sections, but also allows us to address certain inconsistencies in the litera…
The production of a mu+mu- pair from the scattering of a muon-neutrino off the Coulomb field of a nucleus, known as neutrino trident production, is a sub-weak process that has been observed in only a couple of experiments. As such, we show that it constitutes an exquisitely sensitive probe in the search for new neutral currents among leptons, putting the strongest constraints on well-motivated and well-hidden extensions of the Standard Model gauge group, including the one coupled to the difference of the lepton number between the muon and tau flavor, L_mu-L_tau. The new gauge boson, Z', increa…
We analyze the distributions of energy, opening angle and invariant mass in muonic neutrino trident production processes, $ν_μ\to ν_μμ\overlineμ$, in a minimal gauged $U(1)_{L_μ- L_τ}$ model, in which the discrepancy of anomalous magnetic moment of muon can be solved. It is known that the total cross sections of the neutrino trident production are degenerate in new physics parameters, the new gauge coupling and gauge boson mass, and therefore other observables are needed to determine these parameters. From numerical analyses, we find that the muon energy and invariant mass distributions show t…
We present dark tridents, a new channel for exploring dark sectors in short-baseline neutrino experiments. Dark tridents are clean, distinct events where, like neutrino tridents, the scattering of a very weakly coupled particle leads to the production of a lepton--antilepton pair. Dark trident production occurs in models where long-lived dark-sector particles are produced along with the neutrinos in a beam-dump environment and interact with neutrino detectors downstream, producing an on-shell boson which decays into a pair of charged leptons. We focus on a simple model where the dark matter pa…
The DUNE near detector will collect an unprecedented large number of neutrino interactions, allowing the precise measurement of rare processes such as neutrino trident production, i.e. the generation of a lepton-antilepton pair through the scattering of a neutrino off a heavy nucleus. The event rate of this process is a powerful probe to a well-motivated parameter space of new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we perform a detailed sensitivity study of the DUNE near detector to neutrino tridents. We provide state-of-the-art predictions for the Standard Model cross sections and …
We study the possibilities on the search of the light and weakly interacting gauge boson in the gauged $L_μ- L_τ$ model. Introducing the kinetic mixing at the tree-level, the allowed parameter regions for the gauge coupling and kinetic mixing parameter are presented. Then, we analyze one photon plus missing event within the allowed region and show that search for the light gauge boson will be possible at Belle-II experiment. We also analyze neutrino trident production process in neutrino beam experiments.
In this paper, it is shown that in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, the main source for central exclusive diffractive Higgs production is photon-photon fusion. At the LHC energy, the total cross section for this process is about 0.6 pb (for proton-gold scattering), and 3.9 nb (for gold-gold collision) while the gluon-gluon fusion leads to the value of the cross section for CED Higgs production which is about 0.1 nb and 3.9 pb respectively.
We study Higgs boson production from gluon-gluon fusion at mid-rapidity in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. For this process the presently still little known gluon distribution function $h_1^{\perp g}$ gives a numerically relevant contribution. We show by explicite calculation that using CGC (color glass condensate) model input the result obtained in the naive k_t factorization approach matches the result obtained in the TMD factorization framework for a dilute medium. We also verify the earlier finding that the k_t factorization formalism for Higgs production breaks down in a dense medi…
Simple generic expressions to compute double-parton scattering (DPS) cross sections in high-energy proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, as a function of the corresponding single-parton cross sections, are presented. Estimates of DPS contributions are studied for two specific processes at LHC energies: (i) same-sign W-boson pair production in p-Pb, and (ii) double-J/psi production in Pb-Pb, using NLO predictions with nuclear parton densities for the corresponding single-parton cross sections. The expected DPS cross sections and event rates after typical acceptance and efficiency losse…

Cross sections for the concurrent production of pairs of quarkonia (J/psi, Upsilon) and/or gauge bosons (W, Z) from double-parton scatterings (DPS) in high-energy proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC are calculated. The estimates are based on next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, including nuclear modifications of the parton densities, for the corresponding single-scattering cross sections. Expected event rates for J/psi+J/psi, J/psi+Upsilon, J/psi+W, J/psi+Z, Upsilon+Upsilon, Upsilon+W, Upsilon+Z, and same-sign W+W production in their (di)leptonic decay modes…
We explore for the first time the possibilities to measure an intermediate-mass (mH = 115-140 GeV/c^2) Standard-Model Higgs boson in electromagnetic proton-lead (pPb) interactions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via its b-bbar decay. Using equivalent Weizsaecker-Williams photon fluxes and Higgs effective field theory for the coupling gamma-gamma --> H, we obtain a leading-order cross section of the order of 0.3 pb for exclusive Higgs production in elastic (pPb --> gamma-gamma --> p H Pb) and semielastic (pPb --> gamma-gamma --> Pb H X) processes at sqrt(s) = 8.8 TeV. After applying var…
We evaluate the quasielastic and multinucleon contributions to the antineutrino nucleus scattering cross section and compare our results with the recent MiniBooNE data. We use a local Fermi gas model that includes RPA correlations and gets the multinucleon part from a systematic many body expansion of the $W$ boson selfenergy in the nuclear medium. The same model had been quite successful for the neutrino cross section and contains no new parameters. We have also analysed the relevance of 2p2h events for the antineutrino energy reconstruction.
Tagged jet measurements provide a promising experimental channel to quantify the similarities and differences in the mechanisms of jet production in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions. We present the first calculation of the transverse momentum asymmetry of $Z^0/γ^*$-tagged jet events and the momentum imbalance of $γ$-tagged jet events in $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV reactions at the LHC. Our results combine the ${\cal O}(G_Fα_s^2)$, ${\cal O}(G_Fα_s^2)$ perturbative cross sections with the radiative and collisional processes that modify parton showers in the presence of dense QCD matter. We …
We present the constraints on the parameters of several light boson mediator models obtained from the analysis of the current data of the COHERENT CE$ν$NS experiment. We consider a variety of vector boson mediator models: the so-called universal, the $B-L$ and other anomaly-free $U(1)'$ gauge models with direct couplings of the new vector boson with neutrinos and quarks, and the anomaly-free $L_e-L_μ$, $L_e-L_τ$, and $L_μ-L_τ$ gauge models where the coupling of the new vector boson with the quarks is generated by kinetic mixing with the photon at the one-loop level. We consider also a model wi…
We study the elastic scattering of the lightest neutralino with a nucleus in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with explicit flavor preserving CP violation, including the one-loop CP-violating neutral Higgs-boson mixing effects induced dominantly by the CP phases in the top and bottom (s)quark sectors. We construct the most general form of the effective Lagrangian for the neutralino-nucleus scattering in the limit of vanishing momentum transfers and then we perform a comprehensive analysis of the effects of the complex CP phases on the mass spectra of the lighte…
Recent data on the nuclear modification of W and Z boson production measured by the ATLAS collaboration in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm nn}}=5.02$ TeV show an enhancement in peripheral collisions, seemingly contradicting predictions of the Glauber model. The data were previously explained by arguing that the nucleon-nucleon cross section may be shadowed in nucleus-nucleus collisions, and hence suppressed compared to the proton-proton cross section at the same collision energy. This interpretation has quite significant consequences for the understanding of heavy-ion data, in particular in t…
We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) that incorporates a Majorana fermion dark matter and a charged scalar particle with a coupling to the SM leptons through renormalizable terms. Another renormalizable term involving the charged scalar and the Higgs boson gives rise to interactions between the dark matter and SM quarks at the one-loop level, which induce the elastic scatterings between dark matter and nucleus. The same term also affects the effective coupling of the Higgs boson to diphoton through a one-loop diagram with the charged scalar. Therefore, our model predicts a…
We present a study of $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ lepton pair production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.5 TeV. The larger $τ^{\pm}$ mass ($\sim$ 1.77 GeV) compared to $e^{\pm}$ and $μ^{\pm}$ leads to considerably small hadronic contribution to the $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ pair invariant mass ($M$) distribution relative to the production from thermal partonic sources. The quark-anti-quark annihilation processes via intermediary virtual photon, Z and Higgs bosons have been considered for the production of $ τ^{+}τ^{-}$. We observe that the contribution from Drell-Yan process dominates over thermal yield for $τ…
A recent theoretical model predicts that the modification of quark distributions in the nuclear medium (EMC effect) depends on the flavor of the quarks. We investigate $W$-boson production in proton-nucleus collision as a possible tool to test this theoretical prediction. Several experimental observables in $W$ production sensitive to the flavor-dependent EMC effect are identified. Calculations for these experimental observables at the RHIC and LHC energies are presented using the recent flavor-dependent EMC model.
We have presented a review of the properties of neutrinos and their interactions with matter. The different (anti)neutrino processes like the quasielastic scattering, inelastic production of mesons and hyperons, and the deep inelastic scattering from the free nucleons are discussed and the results for the scattering cross sections are presented. The polarization observables for the leptons and hadrons produced in the final state, in the case of quasielastic scattering, are also studied. The importance of nuclear medium effects in the low, intermediate and high energy regions, in the above proc…
We present a model for weak CC induced nuclear reactions at energies of interest for current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. This model is a natural extension of the work of Refs.[1,2], where the QE contribution to the inclusive electron and neutrino scattering on nuclei was analyzed. The model is based on a systematic many body expansion of the gauge boson absorption modes that includes one, two and even three body mechanisms, as well as the excitation of Delta isobars. The whole scheme has no free parameters, besides those previously adjusted to the weak pion production off the …
Parton energy loss in the hot QCD medium will manifest itself not only in leading hadron spectra but also in reconstructed jet productions in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this paper we report on recent theoretical efforts in studying full jet observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions by discussing the modifications of jet shapes, inclusive jet cross section and the vector boson accompanied jet production in the presence of the QGP-induced jet quenching.
We present the Monte Carlo event generator WINHAC for the charged-current Drell-Yan process, i.e. single W-boson production with leptonic decays in hadronic collisions. It features multiphoton radiationwithin the Yennie-Frautschi-Suura exclusive exponentiation scheme with O(alpha) electroweak corrections. For the initial-state QCD/QED parton shower and hadronisation it is interfaced directly to PYTHIA. It implements the options for proton-proton, proton-antipronton and any nucleus-nucleus collisions. Moreover, it includes the polarized W-boson production and the neutral current Drell-Yan proce…
It is shown that in ultrahigh energy inelastic neutrino-nucleon(nucleus) scattering the cross sections for the boson-hadron(nucleus) reactions should exhibit geometric scaling on the single variable tau_A =Q2/Q2_{sat,A}. The dependence on energy and atomic number of the charged/neutral current cross sections are encoded in the saturation momentum Q_{sat,A}. This fact allows an analytical computation of the neutrino scattering on nucleon/nucleus at high energies, providing a theoretical parameterization based on the scaling property.
We calculate in perturbative QCD the transverse momentum broadening of vector boson production in high energy nuclear collisions. We evaluate the effect of initial-state parton multiple scattering for the production of the Drell-Yan virtual photon and $W/Z$ bosons. We calculate both the initial- and final-state multiple scattering effect for the production of heavy quarkonia and their transverse momentum broadening in both NRQCD and Color Evaporation model of quarkonium formation. We find that J/$ψ$ and $Υ$ broadening in hadron-nucleus collision is close to $2C_A/C_F$ times the corresponding D…
Today it is widely believed that $s$-channel excitation of an on-shell~$W$ boson, commonly known as the Glashow resonance, can be initiated in matter only by the electron antineutrino in the process $\barν_ee^-\rightarrow W^-$ at the laboratory energy around~6.3~PeV. In this paper we argue that the Glashow resonance within the Standard Model also occurs in neutrino--nucleus collisions. The main conclusions are as follows. 1)~The Glashow resonance can be excited by both~neutrinos and~antineutrinos of all the three flavors scattering in the Coulomb field of a nucleus. 2)~The Glashow resonance in…
We calculate and compare the differential cross sections for forward $Z^0$-boson production at small transverse momentum, in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions, using both the collinear and dilute-dense factorization frameworks. In both cases, we implement a Sudakov resummation of the large logarithms generated by soft-gluon emissions, which is essential in order to describe the transverse momentum distribution of forward $Z^0$ bosons measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. We further compute the nuclear modification factor in the dilute-dense framework, hoping to single out signals of …
It is shown that a new light gauge boson $X$ which might be produced in the decays of pseudoscalar mesons $π^{0}(η)\toγ+ X$ could be effectively searched for in neutrino experiments via the Primakoff effect, in the process of $X + Z\to π^{0}(η) + Z$ conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. An estimate of the $X\to π^{0}$ conversion rate for the NOMAD neutrino detector at CERN is given.
The potential for probing extra neutral gauge boson mediators ($Z^\prime$) from low-energy measurements is comprehensively explored. Our study mainly focuses on $Z^\prime$ mediators present in string-inspired $E_6$ models and left-right symmetry. We estimate the sensitivities of coherent-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) and neutrino-electron scattering experiments. Our results indicate that such low-energy high-intensity measurements can provide a valuable probe, complementary to high-energy collider searches and electroweak precision measurements.
In this talk I review the main features of the coherent/diffractive pion production by neutrinos on nuclei. The method is based on PCAC and relates the reaction $\textbf{boson} + \textbf{nucleus} \to \textbf{pion} + \textbf{nucleus}$ to elastic pion-nucleus scattering. Estimates for the expected rates and distributions in neutrino reactions are presented with the help of hadronic data. The absolute rates are significantly smaller than the older estimates which brings theory in agreement with the neutral current measurements and the bounds in charged current reactions.
We review the nuclear parton distribution functions computed on the basis of our microscopic model taking into account a number of nuclear effects including Fermi motion and nuclear binding, nuclear meson-exchange currents, off-shell corrections to bound nucleon distributions and nuclear shadowing. We discuss applications to a number of different processes including lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering, proton-nucleus Drell-Yan lepton pair production at Fermilab, as well as $W^\pm$ and $Z^0$ boson production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC.
We present an improved determination of the strange quark and anti-quark parton distribution functions of the proton by means of a global QCD analysis that takes into account a comprehensive set of strangeness-sensitive measurements: charm-tagged cross sections for fixed-target neutrino-nucleus deep-inelastic scattering, and cross sections for inclusive gauge-boson production and $W$-boson production in association with light jets or charm quarks at hadron colliders. Our analysis is accurate to next-to-next-to leading order in perturbative QCD where available, and specifically includes charm-q…
The framework to compute the cross sections for the production of particles with high mass and/or large transverse momentum in double- (DPS), triple- (TPS), and in general $n$-parton scatterings, from the corresponding single-parton ($σ_{\rm SPS}$) values in high-energy proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus is reviewed. The basic parameter of the factorized $n$-parton scattering ansatz is an effective cross section $σ_{\rm eff}$ encoding all unknowns about the underlying generalized $n$-parton distribution in the proton (nucleon). In its simplest and most economical form, the $σ_{…
We introduce a global analysis of collinearly factorized nuclear parton distribution functions (PDFs) including, for the first time, data constraints from LHC proton-lead collisions. In comparison to our previous analysis, EPS09, where data only from charged-lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering (DIS), Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production in proton-nucleus collisions and inclusive pion production in deuteron-nucleus collisions were the input, we now increase the variety of data constraints to cover also neutrino-nucleus DIS and low-mass DY production in pion-nucleus collisions. The new LHC da…
The production of same-sign W-boson pairs from double parton scatterings (DPS) in proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is studied. The signal and background cross sections are estimated with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions for the Pb ion. At sqrt(sNN) = 8.8 TeV the cross section for the DPS process is about 150 pb, i.e. 600 times larger than that in proton-proton collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy and 1.5 times higher than the pPb --> WW+2-jets single-parton background. The measurement of such …
The cross section for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) depends on the response of the target nucleus to the external current, in the Standard Model (SM) mediated by the exchange of a $Z$ boson. This is typically subsumed into an object called the weak form factor of the nucleus. Here, we provide results for this form factor calculated using the large-scale nuclear shell model for a wide range of nuclei of relevance for current CE$ν$NS experiments, including cesium, iodine, argon, fluorine, sodium, germanium, and xenon. In addition, we provide the responses needed to captu…
The extraction of the strange quark parton distribution function (PDF) poses a long-standing puzzle. Measurements from neutrino-nucleus deep inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments suggest the strange quark is suppressed compared to the light sea quarks, while recent studies of W/Z boson production at the LHC imply a larger strange component at small x values. As the parton flavor determination in the proton depends on nuclear corrections, e.g. from heavy-target DIS, LHC heavy ion measurements can provide a distinct perspective to help clarify this situation. In this investigation we extend the…
We study the dependence of neutral current (NC) neutrino-induced $π^0$/photon production ($ν_μ+ A \to ν_μ+1π^0 / γ+ X$) on the atomic number of the target nucleus, A, at 4-momentum transfers relevant to the MiniBooNE experiment: $Δ$ resonance mass region. Our conclusion is based on experimental data for photon-nucleus interactions from the A2 collaboration at the Mainz MAMI accelerator. We work in the approximation that decays of $Δ$ resonance unaffected by its production channel, via photon or Z boson. $1π^0+X$ production scales as A$^{2/3}$, the surface area of the nucleus. Meanwhile the pho…
We present the results of a new analysis of the data of the MiniBooNE experiment taking into account the additional background of photons. MiniBooNE normalises the rate of photon production to the measured $π^0$ production rate. We study neutral current (NC) neutrino-induced $π^0$/photon production ($ν_μ+ A \to ν_μ+1π^0 / γ+ X$) on carbon nucleus (A=12). Our conclusion is based on experimental data for photon-nucleus interactions from the A2 collaboration at the Mainz MAMI accelerator. We work in the approximation that decays of the intermediate states (non-resonant N, $Δ$ resonance, higher re…
We review a microscopic model of the nuclear parton distribution functions, which accounts for a number of nuclear effects including Fermi motion and nuclear binding, nuclear meson-exchange currents, off-shell corrections to bound nucleon distributions and nuclear shadowing. We also discuss applications of this model to a number of processes including lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering, proton-nucleus Drell-Yan lepton pair production at Fermilab, as well as W+- and Z0 boson production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC.
This work studies collinearly factorizable nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) at next-to-leading order in the light of hadron-nucleus collision data which have not been included in nPDF analyses previously. The aim is at setting new constraints on the nuclear modifications of the gluon distribution and on the flavour separation of quark nuclear modifications. The introductory part provides an outline of the theoretical framework of QCD collinear factorization and the used statistical methods and relates the work presented here to other si…
A new production mechanism for the Standard Model Higgs boson in Ultraperipheral Collisions at LHC, which allows Central Exclusive Diffractive production by Double Pomeron Exchange in photon-proton processes, is presented. The Higgs boson is centrally produced by gluon fusion with two Large Rapidity Gaps emerging in the final state, being the main experimental signature for this process. As already studied for Pomeron-Pomeron and two-photon processes, the Higgs boson photoproduction is studied within this new mechanism in proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions, where each sy…
Gravity compresses the matter in the cores of neutron stars to densities which are significantly higher than the density of ordinary atomic nuclei, thus providing a high-pressure environment in which numerous particle processes - from the generation of new baryonic particles to quark deconfinement to the formation of Boson condensates and H-matter - may compete with each other. There are theoretical suggestions of even more `exotic' processes inside pulsars, such as the formation of absolutely stable strange quark matter, a configuration of matter even more stable than the most stable atomic n…
