Time-averaged trapping potentials have played an important role in the development of the field of ultracold atoms. Despite their widespread application, there is not yet a complete understanding of when a system can be considered time-averaged. Here we use Floquet theory to analyse the lowest energy state of time-periodic trapping potentials, and characterise the transition from a localised state in a slowly moving trap to a delocalised state in a rapidly oscillating time-averaged potential. We investigate how the driving parameters affect the density and phase of the Floquet ground state, and provide a quantitative measure of the degree to which they can be considered time-averaged. We study a number of simple representative systems, and comment on the features affecting the experimental realisation of time-averaged trapping potentials.
We study the population trapping extensively in a periodically driven Rydberg pair. The periodic modulation of the atom-light detuning effectively suppresses the Rabi couplings and, together with Rydberg-Rydberg interactions, leads to the state-dependent population trapping. We identify a simple yet a general scheme to determine population trapping regions using driving induced resonances, the Floquet spectrum, and the inverse participation ratio. Contrary to the single atom case, we show that the population trapping in the two-atom setup may not necessarily be associated with level crossings …
We periodically modulate the lattice trapping potential of a $^{87}$Sr optical clock to Floquet engineer the clock transition. In the context of atomic gases in lattices, Floquet engineering has been used to shape the dispersion and topology of Bloch quasi-energy bands. Differently from these previous works manipulating the external (spatial) quasi-energies, we target the internal atomic degrees of freedom. We shape Floquet spin quasi-energies and measure their resonance profiles with Rabi spectroscopy. We provide the spectroscopic sensitivity of each band by measuring the Fisher information a…
An ultracold gas of interacting fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice is considered, where the lattice potential strength is periodically modulated. This non-equilibrium system is non-perturbatively described by means of a Keldysh-Floquet-Green's function approach for Mott-Hubbard systems employing a generalized dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Strong repulsive interactions between different atoms lead to a Mott insulator state for the equilibrium system, but the additional external driving at zero temperature yields a non-equilibrium quantum critical behavior, where an inf…
In this letter we analyze an optical Fabry-Pérot resonator as a time-periodic driving of the (2D) optical field repeatedly traversing the resonator, uncovering that resonator twist produces a synthetic magnetic field applied to the light within the resonator, while mirror aberrations produce relativistic dynamics, anharmonic trapping, and spacetime curvature. We develop a Floquet formalism to compute the effective Hamiltonian for the 2D field, generalizing the idea that the intra-cavity optical field corresponds to an ensemble of non-interacting, massive, harmonically trapped particles. This w…
All light has structure, but only recently it has become possible to construct highly controllable and precise potentials so that most laboratories can harness light for their specific applications. In this chapter, we review the emerging techniques for high-resolution and configurable optical trapping of ultracold atoms. We focus on optical deflectors and spatial light modulators in the Fourier and direct imaging configurations. These optical techniques have enabled significant progress in studies of superfluid dynamics, single-atom trapping, and underlie the emerging field of atomtronics. Th…
We investigate many-body dynamics in a one-dimensional interacting periodically driven system, based on a partially filled version of Thouless's topologically quantized adiabatic pump. The corresponding single-particle Floquet bands are chiral, with the Floquet spectrum realizing nontrivial cycles around the quasienergy Brillouin zone. For generic filling, with either bosons or fermions, the system is gapless and is expected to rapidly absorb energy from the driving field. We identify parameter regimes where scattering between Floquet bands of opposite chirality is exponentially suppressed, op…
We study the effect of time-periodically varying the hopping amplitude in a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, such that its time-averaged value is zero. Employing Floquet theory, we derive a static effective Hamiltonian in which nearest-neighbor single-particle hopping processes are suppressed, but all even higher-order processes are allowed. Unusual many-body features arise from the combined effect of nonlocal interactions and correlated tunneling. At a critical value of the driving, the system passes from a Mott insulator to a superfluid formed by two quasi-condensates with opposite nonzer…

We study micromotion in two-dimensional periodically driven systems in which all bulk Floquet eigenstates are localized by disorder. We show that this micromotion gives rise to a quantized time-averaged magnetization density when the system is filled with fermions. Furthermore we find that a quantized current flows around the boundary of any filled region of finite extent. The quantization has a topological origin: we relate the time-averaged magnetization density to the winding number characterizing the new phase identified in Phys. Rev. X 6, 021013 (2016). We thus establish that the winding …
Programable spatial light modulators (SLMs) have significantly advanced the configurable optical trapping of particles. Typically, these devices are utilized in the Fourier plane of an optical system, but direct imaging of an amplitude pattern can potentially result in increased simplicity and computational speed. Here we demonstrate high-resolution direct imaging of a digital micromirror device (DMD) at high numerical apertures (NA), which we apply to the optical trapping of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We utilise a (1200 x 1920) pixel DMD and commercially available 0.45 NA microscope ob…
We study the dynamics of isolated interacting spin chains that are periodically driven by sudden quenches. Using full exact diagonalization of finite chains, we show that these systems exhibit three distinct regimes. For short driving periods, the Floquet Hamiltonian is well approximated by the time-averaged Hamiltonian, while for long periods the evolution operator exhibits properties of random matrices of a Circular Ensemble (CE). In-between, there is a crossover regime. Based on a finite-size scaling analysis and analytic arguments we argue that, for thermodynamically large systems and non-…
