The experiment to detect the global epoch of reionization signature (EDGES) collaboration reported the detection of a line at 78MHz in the sky-averaged spectrum due to neutral hydrogen (HI) 21-cm hyperfine absorption of cosmic microwave background photons at $z\sim 17$. This requires that the spin temperature of HI be coupled to the kinetic temperature of the gas at this $z$ through the scattering of Ly-$α$ photons emitted by massive stars. To explain the experimental result, star formation needs to be sufficiently efficient at $z\sim 17$ and this can be used to constrain models in which small-scale structure formation is suppressed (DMF models), either due to dark matter free-streaming or non-standard inflationary dynamics. We combine simulations of structure formation with a simple recipe for star formation to investigate whether these models emit enough Ly-$α$ photons to reproduce the experimental signal for reasonable values of the star formation efficiency, $f_\star$. We find that a thermal warm dark matter (WDM) model with mass $m_\mathrm{WDM}\sim 4.3\,\mathrm{keV}$ is consistent with the timing of the signal for $f_\star\lesssim 2\%$. The exponential growth of structure around $z\sim 17$ in such a model naturally generates a sharp onset of the absorption. A warmer model with $m_\mathrm{WDM}\sim 3\,\mathrm{keV}$ requires a higher star formation efficiency, $f_\star\sim 6\%$, which is a factor of few above predictions of current star formation models and observations of satellites in the Milky Way. However, uncertainties in the process of star formation at these $z$ do not allow to derive strong constrains on such models using 21-cm absorption line. The onset of the 21-cm absorption is generally faster in DMF compared to cold dark matter (CDM), unless some process significantly suppresses star formation in halos with masses below $\sim 10^8\,h^{-1}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$.
The recent measurement of the global 21-cm absorption signal reported by the Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES) Collaboration is in tension with the prediction of the $Λ$CDM model at a $3.8\,σ$ significance level. In this work, we report that this tension can be released by introducing an interaction between dark matter and vacuum energy. We perform a model parameter estimation using a combined dataset including EDGES and other recent cosmological observations, and find that the EDGES measurement can marginally improve the constraint on parameters that quan…
We infer mechanisms of galaxy formation for a broad family of semi-analytic models (SAMs) constrained by the K-band luminosity function and HI mass function of local galaxies using tools of Bayesian analysis. Even with a broad search in parameter space the whole model family fails to match to constraining data. In the best fitting models, the star formation and feedback parameters in low-mass haloes are tightly constrained by the two data sets, and the analysis reveals several generic failures of models that similarly apply to other existing SAMs. First, based on the assumption that baryon acc…
We present a survey of 130 Galactic and extragalactic young massive clusters (YMCs, $10^4 < M/\msun < 10^8$, $10 < t/{\rm Myr} < 1000$) with integrated spectroscopy or resolved stellar photometry (40 presented here and 90 from the literature) and use the sample to search for evidence of ongoing star-formation within the clusters. Such episodes of secondary (or continuous) star-formation are predicted by models that attempt to explain the observed chemical and photometric anomalies observed in globular clusters as being due to the formation of a second stellar population within an existing firs…
Double-barred galaxies are common in the local Universe, with approximately one third of barred spirals hosting an smaller, inner bar. Nested bars have been proposed as a mechanism for transporting gas to the very central regions of the galaxy, trigger star formation and contribute to the growth of the bulge. To test this idea, we perform for the first time a detailed analysis of the photometry, kinematics and stellar populations of a double-barred galaxy: NGC 357. We find that this galaxy is either hosting a pseudobulge or a classical bulge together with an inner disc. We compare the relative…
We study stellar assembly and feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) around the epoch of peak star formation (1<z<2), by comparing hydrodynamic simulations to rest-frame UV-optical galaxy colours from the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) Early-Release Science (ERS) Programme. Our Adaptive Mesh Refinement simulations include metal-dependent radiative cooling, star formation, kinetic outflows due to supernova explosions, and feedback from supermassive black holes. Our model assumes that when gas accretes onto black holes, a fraction of the energy is used to form either thermal winds or sub-relativ…
[Abridged]We present a study based on a sample of 62 early-type galaxies (ETGs) at 0.9<z_spec<2 aimed at constraining their past star formation and mass assembly histories. The sample is composed of normal ETGs having effective radii comparable to the mean radius of local ones and of compact ETGs having effective radii from two to six times smaller. We do not find evidence of a dependence of the compactness of ETGs on their stellar mass. We find that the stellar mass of normal ETGs formed at z_form<3 while the stellar content of compact ETGs formed at 2<z_form<10 with a large fraction of them …
The recent detection of an anomalously strong 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen from Cosmic Dawn by the EDGES Low-Band radio experiment can be explained if cold dark matter particles scattered off the baryons draining excess energy from the gas. In this Letter we explore the expanded range of the 21-cm signal that is opened up by this interaction, varying the astrophysical parameters as well as the properties of dark matter particles in the widest possible range. We identify models consistent with current data by comparing to both the detection in the Low-Band and the upper limits from the EDGE…
Currently there are two competing scenarios to explain the origin of the stellar population in globular clusters (GCs). The main difference between them is whether or not multiple events of star formation took place within GCs. In this paper we present the star formation history (SFH) of Cluster 1, a massive young cluster in NGC 34 $(\sim10^7\mbox{ M}_\odot)$. We use DynBaS, a spectrum fitting algorithm, to retrieve the SFH and find that Cluster 1 is consistent with a single stellar population of solar metallicity with an age of $100\pm30$ Myr and a mass of $1.9\pm0.4\times10^7\mbox{ M}_\odot$…
Within standard $Λ$CDM cosmology, Population III (Pop III) star formation in minihalos of mass $M_\mathrm{halo}\gtrsim 5\times10^5$ M$_\odot$ provides the first stellar sources of Lyman$α$ (Ly$α$) photons. The Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES) has measured a strong absorption signal of the redshifted 21 cm radiation from neutral hydrogen at $z\approx 17$, requiring efficient formation of massive stars before then. In this paper, we investigate whether star formation in minihalos plays a significant role in establishing the early Ly$α$ background required t…
The EDGES experiment has recently measured an anomalous global 21-cm spectrum due to hydrogen absorptions at redshifts of about $z\sim 17$. Model independently, the unusually low temperature of baryons probed by this observable sets strong constraints on any physical process that transfers energy into the baryonic environment at such redshifts. Here we make use of the 21-cm spectrum to derive bounds on the energy injection due to a possible population of ${\cal O}(1-100) M_\odot$ primordial black holes, which induce a wide spectrum of radiation during the accretion of the surrounding gas. Afte…
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will revolutionise our understanding of early galaxy formation, and could potentially set stringent constraints on the nature of dark matter. We use a semi-empirical model of galaxy formation to investigate the extent to which uncertainties in the implementation of baryonic physics may be degenerate with the predictions of two different models of dark matter -- Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and a 7 keV sterile neutrino, which behaves as Warm Dark Matter (WDM). Our models are calibrated to the observed UV luminosity function at $z=4$ using two separate dust attenu…
Enhanced density fluctuations on small scales would lead to the formation of numerous dark matter minihalos, so limits on the minihalo abundance can place upper bounds on the small-scale primordial power spectrum. In particular, the ultracompact minihalo (UCMH), a dark matter structure hypothesized to possess a $ρ\propto r^{-9/4}$ density profile due to its formation at $z\geq 1000$, has been used to establish an upper bound on the primordial power spectrum at scales smaller than 2 Mpc. The extreme slope of this density profile amplifies the observational signals of UCMHs. However, we recently…
A complex of Halpha emitting blobs with strong FUV excess is associated to the dIrr galaxy VCC1217 / IC3418 (Hester et al. 2010), and extends up to 17 Kpc in the South-East direction. These outstanding features can be morphologically divided into diffuse filaments and compact knots, where most of the star formation activity traced by Halpha takes place. We investigate the properties of the galaxy and the blobs using a multiwavelength approach in order to constrain their origin. We collect publicly available data in UV and Halpha and observe the scene in the optical U,g,r,i bands with LBT. The …
We assess comprehensively the potential of galaxy cluster edges as a standard ruler in measuring cosmological distances and probing exotic physics. Confronting five alternative cosmological models with cluster edges from the near future Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument survey, we conclude that cluster edges can serve as a promising probe to constrain models beyond $Λ$CDM. Especially, the constraining precision of equation of state of dark energy from cluster edges is just about two times larger than that from the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae sample. We find that the constraining power of cl…
We present observations and dynamical models of the stellar nuclear clusters (NCs) at the centres of NGC 4244 and M33. We then compare these to an extensive set of simulations testing the importance of purely stellar dynamical mergers on the formation and growth of NCs. Mergers of star clusters are able to produce a wide variety of observed properties, including densities, structural scaling relations, shapes (including the presence of young discs) and even rapid rotation. Nonetheless, difficulties remain, most notably that the second order kinematic moment V_rms = (V^2 + sigma^2)^(1/2) of the…
We used broad-band imaging data for 10 cool-core brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) and conducted a Bayesian analysis using stellar population synthesis to determine the likely properties of the constituent stellar populations. Determination of ongoing star formation rates (SFRs), in particular, has a direct impact on our understanding of the cooling of the intracluster medium (ICM), star formation and AGN-regulated feedback. Our model consists of an old stellar population and a series of young stellar components. We calculated marginalized posterior probability distributions for various model …
Observations of the high redshift universe provide a promising avenue for constraining the nature of the dark matter (DM). This will be even more true with the advent of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We run cosmological simulations of galaxy formation as part of the Effective Theory of Structure Formation (ETHOS) project to compare high redshift galaxies in Cold (CDM) and alternative DM models which have varying relativistic coupling and self-interaction strengths. The interacting DM scenarios produce a cutoff in the linear power spectrum on small-scales, followed by a series of "dark…
We study the possibility to detect and distinguish signatures of enrichment from PopIII stars in observations of PopII GRBs (GRBIIs) at high redshift by using numerical N-body/hydrodynamical simulations including atomic and molecular cooling, star formation and metal spreading from stellar populations with different initial mass functions (IMFs), yields and lifetimes. PopIII and PopII star formation regimes are followed simultaneously and both a top-heavy and a Salpeter-like IMF for pristine PopIII star formation are adopted. We find that the fraction of GRBIIs hosted in a medium previously en…
The present day spectrum of the extragalactic background light (EBL) in UV, optical and IR wavelengths is the integral result of multiple astrophysical processes going on throughout the evolution of the Universe. The relevant processes include star formation, stellar evolution, light absorption and emission by the cosmic dust. The properties of these processes are known with uncertainties which contribute to the EBL spectrum precision. In the present paper we develop a numerical model of the EBL spectrum while maintaining the explicit dependence on the astrophysical parameters involved. We con…
We present constraints on the timescale of star formation variability and the correlation between star formation and host halo accretion histories of star-forming (SF) central galaxies from the scatter of the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR). SF galaxies are found to have a tight relationship between their star formation rates and stellar masses on the so-called "star-forming sequence" (SFS), which characterizes their SF histories and $M_*$ growths. Meanwhile, observed SHMR constraints connect $M_*$ growth to halo accretion history. Combining these observed trends with a cosmological $N$-b…
In this paper we explore a possible route of black hole seed formation that appeal to a model by Davies, Miller & Bellovary who considered the case of the dynamical collapse of a dense cluster of stellar black holes subjected to an inflow of gas. Here, we explore this case in a broad cosmological context. The working hypotheses are that (i) nuclear star clusters form at high redshifts in pre-galactic discs hosted in dark matter halos, providing a suitable environment for the formation of stellar black holes in their cores, (ii) major central inflows of gas occur onto these clusters due to inst…
Simulations of cluster formation have demonstrated that condensation of baryons into central galaxies during cluster formation can drive the shape of the gas distribution in galaxy clusters significantly rounder, even at radii as large as half of the virial radius. However, such simulations generally predict stellar fractions within cluster virial radii that are ~2 to 3 times larger than the stellar masses deduced from observations. In this work we compare ellipticity profiles of clusters simulated with and without baryonic cooling to the cluster ellipticity profiles derived from Chandra and R…
Using the self-consistent modeling of the conditional stellar mass functions across cosmic time by Yang et al. (2012), we make model predictions for the star formation histories (SFHs) of {\it central} galaxies in halos of different masses. The model requires the following two key ingredients: (i) mass assembly histories of central and satellite galaxies, and (ii) local observational constraints of the star formation rates of central galaxies as function of halo mass. We obtain a universal fitting formula that describes the (median) SFH of central galaxies as function of halo mass, galaxy stel…
The rich galaxy cluster Abell 2204 exhibits edges in its X-ray surface brightness at $\sim 65$ and $35 {\rm~ kpc}$ west and east of its center, respectively. The presence of these edges, which were interpreted as sloshing cold fronts, implies that the intracluster medium was recently disturbed. We analyze the properties of the intracluster medium using multiple Chandra observations of Abell 2204. We find a density ratio $n_{\rm in}/n_{\rm out} = 2.05\pm0.05$ and a temperature ratio $T_{\rm out}/T_{\rm in} = 1.91\pm0.27$ (projected, or $1.87\pm0.56$ deprojected) across the western edge, and cor…
We present a revised measurement of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL), based on the contribution of resolved galaxies to the integrated galaxy light (IGL). The cosmic optical background radiation (COB), encodes the light generated by star-formation, and provides a wealth of information about the cosmic star formation history (CSFH). We combine wide and deep galaxy number counts from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA) and Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS), along with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive and other deep survey datasets, in 9 multi-wavele…
In the hierarchical structure formation model of the universe, galaxy clusters are assembled through a series of mergers. Accordingly, it is expected that galaxy clusters in the early universe are actively forming and dynamically young. Located at a high redshift of z=1.71, SpARCS1049+56 offers a unique look into the galaxy cluster formation process. This cluster has been shown to be rich in cluster galaxies and to have intense star formation. Its high redshift pushes a weak-lensing analysis beyond the regime of the optical spectrum into that of the infrared. Equipped with deep Hubble Space Te…
The Fermi satellite has detected GeV emission from a number of gamma-ray bursts and active galactic nuclei at high redshift, z > 1.5. We examine the constraints that the detections of gamma rays from several of these sources place on the contribution of population-III stars to the extragalactic background light. Emission from these primordial stars, particularly redshifted Lyman-alpha emission, can interact with gamma rays to produce electron-positron pairs and create an optical depth to the propagation of gamma-ray emission, and the detection of emission above 10 GeV can therefore constrain t…
Understanding the physics of star formation is one of the key problems facing modern astrophysics. The Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB), sourced by the emission from all dusty star-forming galaxies since the epoch of reionisation, is a complementary probe to study the star formation history, as well as an important extragalactic foreground for studies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Understanding the physics of the CIB is therefore of high importance for both cosmology and galaxy formation studies. In this paper, we make high signal-to-noise measurements of the cross-correlation betw…
A feebly interacting massive particle (FIMP), contrasting with a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP), is an intriguing dark matter (DM) candidate. Light (keV-scale) FIMP DM is of particular interest: its radiative decay leaves a line signal in x-ray spectra; and it is warm dark matter (WDM) and alters the galactic-scale structure formation of the Universe from that with WIMP DM. Once a possible x-ray line is reported (e.g., $3.5 \,\mathrm{keV}$ line and $7 \,\mathrm{keV}$ FIMP DM is inferred), one has to check whether or not this FIMP DM is compatible with the structure formation. Here …
We derive new constraints on the non-gravitational baryon-dark-matter scattering (BDMS) by evaluating the mass thresholds of dark matter (DM) haloes in which primordial gas can cool efficiently to form Population III (Pop III) stars, based on the timing of the observed 21-cm absorption signal. We focus on the BDMS model with interaction cross-section $σ=σ_{1}[v/(1\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}})]^{-4}$, where $v$ is the relative velocity of the encounter. Our results rule out the region in parameter space with $σ_{1}\gtrsim 10^{-19}\ \mathrm{cm^{2}}$ and DM particle mass $m_χc^{2}\lesssim 3\times 10^{-2…
We present high spatial resolution MERLIN 1.4GHz radio observations of two high redshift (z~2) sources, RGJ123623 (HDF147) and RGJ123617 (HDF130), selected as the brightest radio sources from a sample of submillimetre-faint radio galaxies. They have starburst classifications from their rest-frame UV spectra. However, their radio morphologies are remarkably compact (<80mas and <65mas respectively), demanding that the radio luminosity be dominated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) rather than starbursts. Near-IR imaging (HST NICMOS F160W) shows large scale sizes (R_(1/2)~0.75", diameters ~12kpc) a…
Upcoming ground and space-based experiments may have sufficient accuracy to place significant constraints upon high-redshift star formation, Reionization, and dark matter (DM) using the global 21-cm signal of the intergalactic medium. In the early universe, when the relative abundance of low-mass DM halos is important, measuring the global signal would place constraints on the damping of structure formation caused by DM having a higher relic velocity (warm dark matter, or WDM) than in cold dark matter (CDM). Such damping, however, can be mimicked by altering the star formation efficiency (SFE)…
Starlight in the Universe impedes the passage of high energy (e.g. TeV) gamma rays due to positron-electron pair production. The history of this stellar radiation field depends upon observations of star formation rate which themselves can only be interpreted in the context of a particular cosmology. For different equations of state of dark energy, the star formation rate data suggests a different density of stellar photons at a particular redshift and a different probability of arrival of gamma rays from distant sources. In this work we aim to show that this effect can be used to constrain the…
The investigation of distant galaxy formation and evolution is a powerful tool to constrain dark matter scenarios, supporting and in some cases surpassing other astrophysical and experimental probes. The recent completion of the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) programme combining ultra-deep Hubble Space Telescope observations and the magnification power of gravitational lensing produced by foreground galaxy clusters has enabled the detection of the faintest primordial galaxies ever studied. Here we show how the number density of such primordial galaxies allows to constrain a variety of DM models …
We demonstrate the potential of an emulator-based approach to analyzing galaxy formation models in the domain where constraining data is limited. We have applied the open-source Python package PRISM to the galaxy formation model Meraxes. Meraxes is a semi-analytic model, purposefully built to study the growth of galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Constraining such models is however complicated by the scarcity of observational data in the EoR. PRISM's ability to rapidly construct accurate approximations of complex scientific models using minimal data is therefore key to performing…
The simplest model of mirror sector dark matter maintains exact mirror symmetry, but has a baryon abundance $Ω_{b'} = βΩ_b$ and a suppressed temperature $T' = x T$ in the mirror sector; hence it depends only on two parameters, $β,x$. For sufficiently small $x$, early cosmological observables may not constrain mirror baryons from constituting all of the dark matter despite their strong self-interactions, depending on the unknown details of structure formation in the hidden sector. Here we close this loophole by simulating mirror structure formation, mapping out the allowed regions of parameter …
We have mapped the distribution of young and old stars in the gaseous HI warp of NGC 4565. We find a clear correlation of young stars (<600 Myr) with the warp, but no coincident old stars (>1 Gyr), which places an upper limit on the age of the structure. The formation rate of the young stars, which increased ~300 Myr ago relative to the surrounding regions, is (6.3 +2.5/-1.5) x 10^-5 M_sol/yr/kpc^2. This implies a ~60+/-20 Gyr depletion time of the HI warp, similar to the timescales calculated for the outer HI disks of nearby spiral galaxies. While some stars associated with the warp fall into…
Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (LGRBs) have been shown to be powerful probes of the Universe, in particular to study the star formation rate up to very high redshift ($z \sim 9$). Since LGRBs are produced by only a small fraction of massive stars, it is paramount to have a good understanding of their underlying intrinsic population in order to use them as cosmological probes without introducing any unwanted bias. The goal of this work is to constrain and characterise this intrinsic population. We developed a Monte Carlo model where each burst is described by its redshift and its properties at the peak …
We study the dependence of galaxy clustering on atomic gas mass using a sample of $\sim$16,000 galaxies with redshift in the range of $0.0025<z<0.05$ and HI mass of $M_{\rm HI}>10^8M_{\odot}$, drawn from the 70% complete sample of the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. We construct subsamples of galaxies with $M_{\rm HI}$ above different thresholds, and make volume-limited clustering measurements in terms of three statistics: the projected two-point correlation function, the projected cross-correlation function with respect to a reference sample selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and th…
In the inhomogeneous Universe, the cosmological conversion of dark photons into ordinary photons (and vice versa) may happen at a great number of resonance redshifts. This alters the CMB observed energy spectrum and degree of small-scale anisotropies. We utilize results from the EAGLE simulation to obtain the conversion probability along random line-of-sights to quantify these effects. We then apply our results to the case where dark photons are sourced by dark matter decay and their high-redshift conversion into ordinary photons modify the global 21 cm signal expected from the cosmic dawn era…
We present a new semi-analytical model of the population of satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, aimed at estimating the effect of the geometry of reionization at galaxy scale on the properties of the satellites. In this model reionization can be either: (A) externally-driven and uniform, or (B) internally-driven, by the most massive progenitor of the Milky Way. In the latter scenario the propagation of the ionisation front and photon dilution introduce a delay in the photo-evaporation of the outer satellites' gas with respect to the inner satellites. As a consequence, outer satellites experie…
