GJ4276 is an M4.0 dwarf star with an inferred Neptune mass planet from radial velocity (RV) observations. We reanalyse the RV data for this system and focus on the possibility of a second, super earth mass, planet. We compute the timescale for fast resonant librations in the eccentricity to be $\sim 2\,000\,\mathrm{days}$. Given that the observations were taken over $700\,\mathrm{days}$, we expect to see the effect of these librations in the observations. We perform a fully dynamical fit to test this hypothesis. Similar to previous results, we determine that the data could be fit by two planets in a 2:1 mean motion resonance. However, we also find solutions near the 5:4 mean motion resonance which are not present when planet-planet interactions are ignored. Using the MEGNO indicator, we analyze the stability of the system and find that our solutions lie in a stable region of parameter space. We also find that though out of resonance solutions are possible, the system favours a configuration which is in a first order mean motion resonance. The existence of mean motion resonances has important implications in many planet formation theories. Although we do not attempt to distinguish between the one and two planet models in this work, in either case, the predicted orbital parameters are interesting enough to merit further study. Future observations should be able to distinguish between the different scenarios within the next $5\,\mathrm{years}$.
Population studies of the orbital characteristics of exoplanets in multi-planet systems have highlighted the existence of an anticorrelation between the average orbital eccentricity of planets and the number of planets of their host system, that is, its multiplicity. This effect was proposed to reflect the varying levels of violence in the dynamical evolution of planetary systems. Previous work suggested that the relative violence of the dynamical evolution of planetary systems with similar orbital architectures can be compared through the computation of their angular momentum deficit (AMD). W…
Most stars, perhaps even all stars, form in crowded stellar environments. Such star forming regions typically dissolve within ten million years, while others remain bound as stellar groupings for hundreds of millions to billions of years, and then become the open clusters or globular clusters that are present in our Milky Way galaxy today. A large fraction of stars in the Galaxy hosts planetary companions. To understand the origin and dynamical evolution of such exoplanet systems, it is necessary to carefully study the effect of their environments. Here, we combine theoretical estimates with s…
Aim. The eccentric von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai (ZLK) effect is widely used to explain dynamical phenomena in varieties of astrophysical systems. The purpose of this work is to make clear the dynamical essence of the eccentric ZLK effect by constructing an inherent connection between such an effect and dynamics of secular resonance in restricted hierarchical planetary systems. Methods. Dynamical structures of apsidal resonance are analytically studied by means of perturbative treatments. The resonant model is formulated by averaging the Hamiltonian (up to octupole order) over rotating ZLK cycles, pr…
Planetary systems with multiple giant planets provide important opportunities to study planetary formation and evolution. The HD 45364 system hosts two giant planets that reside within the Habitable Zone (HZ) of their host star and was the first system discovered with a 3:2 mean motion resonance (MMR). Several competing migration theories with different predictions have previously provided explanations regarding the observed resonance through dynamical simulations that utilized limited data. Here, over ten years since the original discovery, we revisit the system with a substantially increased…
We describe the Reversibility Error Method (REM) and its applications to planetary dynamics. REM is based on the time-reversibility analysis of the phase-space trajectories of conservative Hamiltonian systems. The round-off errors break the time reversibility and the displacement from the initial condition, occurring when we integrate it forward and backward for the same time interval, is related to the dynamical character of the trajectory. If the motion is chaotic, in the sense of non-zero maximal Characteristic Lyapunov Exponent (mLCE), then REM increases exponentially with time, as exp λt,…
Planetary architectures remain unexplored for the vast majority of exoplanetary systems, even among the closest ones, with potentially hundreds of planets still ``hidden" from our knowledge. DYNAMITE is a powerful software package that can predict the presence and properties of these yet undiscovered planets. We have significantly expanded the integrative capabilities of DYNAMITE, which now allows for (i) planets of unknown inclinations alongside planets of known inclinations, (ii) population statistics and model distributions for the eccentricity of planetary orbits, and (iii) three different…
Multi-planet systems around evolved stars are of interest to trace the evolution of planetary systems into the post-main sequence phase. HD 47366, an evolved intermediate mass star, hosts two giant planets on moderately eccentric orbits. Previous analysis of the planetary system has revealed that it is dynamically unstable on timescales much shorter than the stellar age unless the planets are trapped in mutual 2:1 mean motion resonance, inconsistent with the orbital solution presented in \cite{2016Sato} (hereafter: S16), or are moving on mutually retrograde orbits. Here we examine the orbital …
Recent ALMA observations on disk substructures suggest the presence of embedded protoplanets in a large number disks. The primordial configurations of these planetary systems can be deduced from the morphology of the disk substructure and serve as initial conditions for numerical investigation of their future evolution. Starting from the initial configurations of 12 multi-planetary systems deduced from ALMA disks, we carried out two-stage N-body simulation to investigate the evolution of the planetary systems at the disk stage as well as the long term orbital stability after the disk dispersal…
We present a new planetary global circulation model, planetMPAS, based on the state-of-the-art NCAR MPAS General Circulation Model. Taking advantage of the cross compatibility between WRF and MPAS, planetMPAS includes most of the planetWRF physics parameterization schemes for terrestrial planets such as Mars and Titan. PlanetMPAS also includes a set of physics that represents radiative transfer, dry convection, moist convection and its associated microphysics for the Jovian atmosphere. We demonstrate that, despite the rigid-lid approximation, planetMPAS is suitable to simulate the climate syst…
We examine the effects that dynamical instability has on shaping the orbital properties of exoplanetary systems. Using N-body simulations of non-EMS (Equal Mutual Separation), multi-planet systems we find that the lower limit of the instability timescale $t$ is determined by the minimal mutual separation $K_{\rm min}$ in units of the mutual Hill radius. Planetary systems showing instability generally include planet pairs with period ratio $<1.33$. Our final period ratio distribution of all adjacent planet pairs shows dip-peak structures near first-order mean motion resonances similar to those …
We present a detailed analysis of the orbital stability of the HD 181433 planetary system, finding it to exhibit strong dynamical instability across a wide range of orbital eccentricities, semi-major axes, and mutual inclinations. We also analyse the behaviour of an alternative system architecture, proposed by Campanella (2011), and find that it offers greater stability than the original solution, as a result of the planets being trapped in strong mutual resonance. We take advantage of more recent observations to perform a full refit of the system, producing a new planetary solution. The best-…
Nonrestricted hierarchical three-body configurations are common in various scales of astrophysical systems. Dynamical structures of the quadrupole-order resonance (the von Zeipel-Lidov-Kozai resonance) and the octupole-order resonance (the apsidal resonance) under the nonrestricted hierarchical planetary systems are investigated in this work by taking advantage of perturbative treatments. Under the quadrupole-order Hamiltonian model, the distribution of libration and circulation regions as well as the distribution of flipping region are analytically explored in the parameter space spanned by t…
Aims. We study the formation and water delivery of planets in the habitable zone (HZ) around solar-type stars. In particular, we study different dynamical environments that are defined by the most massive body in the system. Methods. First of all, a semi-analytical model was used to define the mass of the protoplanetary disks that produce each of the five dynamical scenarios of our research. Then, we made use of the same semi-analytical model to describe the evolution of embryos and planetesimals during the gaseous phase. Finally, we carried out N-body simulations of planetary accretion in ord…
The outflowing magnetized wind from a host star shapes planetary and exoplanetary magnetospheres dictating the extent of its impact. We carry out three-dimensional (3D) compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the interactions between magnetized stellar winds and planetary magnetospheres corresponding to a far-out star-planet system, with and without planetary dipole obliquity. We identify the pathways that lead to the formation of a dynamical steady-state magnetosphere and find that magnetic reconnection plays a fundamental role in the process. The magnetic energy density is foun…
Stellar flybys in star clusters may perturb the evolution of young planetary systems in terms of disk truncation, planetary migration and planetary mass accretion. We investigate the feedback of a young planetary system during a single close stellar encounter in a typical open young stellar cluster. We consider 5 masses for the stellar perturbers: 0.5, 0.8, 1, 3 and 8 M$_{Sun}$, in coplanar, prograde and retrograde orbits respect to the planetary disk, varying the pertruber-host star orbital periastron from 100 AU to 500 AU. We have made 3D modelizations with the smooth particle hydrodynamics …
On fitting planetary systems in counter-revolving configurations
In spite of planetary resonances being a common dynamical mechanism acting on planetary systems, no general model exists for describing their properties, particularly for commensurabilities of any order and arbitrary values of the eccentricities and inclinations. The present work presents a semi-analytical model that describes the resonance strength, width, location and stability of fixed points, as well as periods of small-amplitude librations. The model is valid to any two gravitationally interacting massive bodies, and thus applicable to planets around single or binary stars. Using a theore…
Dynamical mass estimates down to the planet-mass regime can help to understand planet formation. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm observations of FW Tau C, a proposed ~10 $M_{\rm Jup}$ planet-mass companion at ~330 au from the host binary FW Tau AB. We spatially and spectrally resolve the accretion disk of FW Tau C in ${}^{12}$CO (2-1). By modeling the Keplerian rotation of gas, we derive a dynamical mass of ~0.1 $M_\odot$. Therefore, FW Tau C is unlikely a planet, but rather a low-mass star with a highly inclined disk. This also suggests that FW Tau is a t…
The fates of planetary systems provide unassailable insights into their formation and represent rich cross-disciplinary dynamical laboratories. Mounting observations of post-main-sequence planetary systems necessitate a complementary level of theoretical scrutiny. Here, I review the diverse dynamical processes which affect planets, asteroids, comets and pebbles as their parent stars evolve into giant branch, white dwarf and neutron stars. This reference provides a foundation for the interpretation and modelling of currently known systems and upcoming discoveries.
