We report a new star formation history for the Tucana dwarf spheroidal galaxy, obtained from a new look at a deep HST/ACS colour-magnitude diagram. We combined information from the main sequence turn-off and the horizontal branch to resolve the ancient star formation rates on a finer temporal scale than previously possible. We show that Tucana experienced three major phases of star formation, two very close together at ancient times and the last one ending between 6 and 8 Gyr ago. We show that the three discrete clumps of stars on the horizontal branch are linked to the distinct episodes of star formation in Tucana. The spatial distribution of the clumps reveals that each generation of stars presents a higher concentration than the previous one. The simultaneous modelling of the horizontal branch and the main sequence turn-off also allows us to measure the amount of mass lost by red giant branch stars in Tucana with unprecedented precision, confirming dwarf spheroidals to be excellent laboratories to study the advanced evolution of low-mass stars.
We use the APOSTLE Local Group (LG) cosmological hydro-simulations to examine the properties of "backsplash" galaxies, i.e, dwarfs which were within the virial boundaries of the Milky Way (MW) or M31 in the past, but are today outside their virial radius ($r_{200}$). More than half of all dwarfs between $1-2\,r_{200}$ of each primary are backsplash. More distant backsplash systems, i.e., those reaching distances well beyond $2\,r_{200}$, are typically close to apocentre of nearly radial orbits, and, therefore, essentially at rest relative to their primary. We use this result to investigate whi…
Isolated Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies have evolved most or all of their life unaffected by interactions with the large LG spirals and therefore offer the opportunity to learn about the intrinsic characteristics of this class of objects. Here we explore the internal kinematic and metallicity properties of one of the three isolated LG dwarf spheroidal galaxies, i.e. the Tucana dSph. This is an intriguing system, as it has been found in the literature to have an internal rotation of up to 16 km/s, a much higher velocity dispersion than other dSphs of similar luminosity, and a possible exceptio…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group are usually located close to the Milky Way or M31. Currently, there are two clear exceptions to this rule, and the Tucana dwarf galaxy is the most distant at almost 1 Mpc from the Milky Way. Using the VLT/FORS2 spectrograph in multi-object mode we were able to measure the velocities of 23 individual Red Giant Branch stars in and around Tucana using the Ca triplet absorption lines. From this sample 17 reliable members have been identified. We measured the systemic velocity and dispersion of Tucana to be v_hel = +194.0+-4.3 km/s and sigma_l.o.s. = 15.…
For the first time, we obtain chemical evolution models (CEMs) for Tucana and Cetus, two isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) of the Local Group. The CEMs have been built from the star formation histories (SFHs) and the metallicity histories, both obtained independently by the LCID project from deep color-magnitude dia- grams. Based on our models, we find that the chemical histories were complex and can be divided into different epochs and scenarios. In particular, during 75 percent of the SFH, the galaxies behaved as closed boxes and, during the remaining 25 percent, either received a l…
We present new FLAMES$+$GIRAFFE spectroscopy of 36 member stars in the isolated Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy Tucana. We measure a systemic velocity for the system of $v_{\mathrm{Tuc}}=216.7_{-2.8}^{+2.9}$kms$^{-1}$, and a velocity dispersion of $σ_{\mathrm{v,Tuc}}=14.4_{-2.3}^{+2.8}$kms$^{-1}$. We also detect a rotation gradient of $\frac{dv_{r}}{dχ}=7.6^{+4.2}_{-4.3}$ kms$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, which reduces the systemic velocity to $v_{\mathrm{Tuc}}=215.2_{-2.7}^{+2.8}$ kms$^{-1}$ and the velocity dispersion to $σ_{v,\mathrm{Tuc}}=13.3_{-2.3}^{+2.7}$ kms$^{-1}$. We perform Jeans modelling…
We present B,V time-series photometry of Andromeda XIX (And XIX), the most extended (half-light radius of 6.2') of Andromeda's dwarf spheroidal companions, that we observed with the Large Binocular Cameras at the Large Binocular Telescope. We surveyed a 23'x 23' area centered on And XIX and present the deepest color magnitude diagram (CMD) ever obtained for this galaxy, reaching, at V~26.3 mag, about one magnitude below the horizontal branch (HB). The CMD shows a prominent and slightly widened red giant branch, along with a predominantly red HB, which, however, extends to the blue to significa…
We use observations from the ACS study of Galactic globular clusters to investigate the spatial distribution of the inner regions of the disrupting Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr). We combine previously published analyses of four Sgr member clusters located near or in the Sgr core (M54, Arp 2, Terzan 7 and Terzan 8) with a new analysis of diffuse Sgr material identified in the background of five low-latitude Galactic bulge clusters (NGC 6624, 6637, 6652, 6681 and 6809) observed as part of the ACS survey. By comparing the bulge cluster CMDs to our previous analysis of the M54/Sgr core…
The analysis of the early star formation history (SFH) of nearby galaxies, obtained from their resolved stellar populations is relevant as a test for cosmological models. However, the early time resolution of observationally derived SFHs is limited by several factors. Thus, direct comparison of observationally derived SFHs with those derived from theoretical models of galaxy formation is potentially biased. Here we investigate and quantify this effect. For this purpose, we analyze the duration of the early star formation activity in a sample of four Local Group dwarf galaxies and test whether …
Using our HST/ACS observations of the recently found isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we homogeneously measured their star formation histories. We determined star formation rate as a function of time, as well as age and metallicity of the stellar populations. All objects demonstrate complex star formation history, with a significant portion of stars formed 10-13 Gyr ago. Nevertheless, stars of middle ages (1-8 Gyr) are presented. In order to understand how the star formation parameters influence the evolution of dSphs, we also studied a sample of nearest dSphs in different environment: isol…
Tucana-II (Tuc-II), a recently discovered and confirmed Ultra Faint Dwarf Spheroidal galaxy, has a high mass to light ratio as well as a large line-of-sight stellar velocity dispersion, thus making it an ideal candidate for an indirect dark matter (DM) search. In this paper, we have analyzed nine years of $γ$-ray data obtained from the \textit{Fermi}-LAT instrument from the direction of Tuc-II. The fact that a very weak significant $γ$-ray excess ($2.2σ$) over the background of Tuc-II have been detected from the location of this galaxy. We have observed that this excess of $γ$-ray emission fro…
Aims: for the first time the astrometric capabilities of the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) facility GeMS with the GSAOI camera on Gemini-South are tested to quantify the accuracy in determining stellar proper motions in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6681. Methods: proper motions from HST/ACS for a sample of its stars are already available, and this allows us to construct a distortion-free reference at the epoch of GeMS observations that is used to measure and correct the temporally changing distortions for each GeMS exposure. In this way, we are able to compare the corrected GeMS …
We have measured absolute proper motions for the three populations intercepted in the direction of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6681: the cluster itself, the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy and the field. For this we used Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC and WFC3/UVIS optical imaging data separated by a temporal baseline of 5.464 years. Five background galaxies were used to determine the zero point of the absolute-motion reference frame. The resulting absolute proper motion of NGC 6681 is ($μ_α\cosδ, μ_δ$)=($1.58\pm0.18, -4.57\pm0.16$) \masyr. This is the first estimate ever made for th…
(Abridged) The formation of massive spheroidal galaxies is studied on a visually classified sample of 910 galaxies extracted from the ACS/HST images of the GOODS North and South fields (0.4<z<.5). Three key observables are considered: comoving number density, internal colour distribution; and the Kormendy relation. The comoving number density of the most massive galaxies is found not to change significantly with redshift. One quarter of the whole sample of early-types are photometrically classified as blue galaxies. On a volume-limited subset out to z<0.7, the average stellar mass of the blue …
We present a photometric study of the Andromeda XVIII dwarf spheroidal galaxy associated with M31, and situated well outside of the virial radius of the M31 halo. The galaxy was resolved into stars with Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys revealing the old red giant branch and red clump. With the new observational data we determined the Andromeda XVIII distance to be D = 1.33+-0.08 Mpc using the tip of red giant branch method. Thus, the dwarf is situated at the distance of 579 kpc from M31. We model the star formation history of Andromeda XVIII from the stellar photometry and Pa…
We present new optical (BVI) time-series data for the evolved variable stars in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The quality of the data and the observing strategy allowed us to identify 14 new variable stars. Eight out of the 14 are RR Lyrae (RRL) stars, four are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs) and two are geometrical variables. Comparison of the period distribution for the entire sample of RRLs with similar distributions in nearby dSphs and in the Large Magellanic Cloud indicates that the old stellar populations in these systems share similar properties. This finding is also supported by the RRL…
We present HST/ACS imaging of twenty-three very low surface brightness ($μ_{e,V}$=25-27.5) galaxies detected in the fields of four nearby galaxy groups. These objects were selected from deep optical imaging obtained with the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. Seven are new discoveries, while most of the others had been identified previously in visual surveys of deep photographic plates and more recent surveys. Few have previously been studied in detail. From the ACS images, we measure distances to the galaxies using both the tip of the red giant branch method and the surface brightness fluctuations me…
A number of mechanisms have been proposed to connect star-forming dwarf irregular galaxies with the formation of non-star-forming dwarf spheroidal galaxies, but distinguishing between these mechanisms has been difficult. We use the Via Lactea dark matter only cosmological simulations to test two well-motivated simple hypotheses---transformation of irregulars into dwarf spheroidal galaxies by tidal stirring and ram pressure stripping following a close passage to the host galaxy, and transformation via mergers between dwarfs---and predict the radial distribution and inferred formation times of t…
We discuss how knowledge of the whole evolutionary history of dwarf galaxies, including details on the early star formation events, can provide insight on the origin of the different dwarf galaxy types. We suggest that these types may be imprinted by the early conditions of formation rather than being only the result of a recent morphological transformation driven by environmental effects. We present precise star formation histories of a sample of Local Group dwarf galaxies, derived from colour-magnitude diagrams reaching the oldest main-sequence turnoffs. We argue that these galaxies can be a…
We present new proper motion (PM) measurements of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) Draco and Sculptor using multi-epoch images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC. Our PM results have uncertainties far lower than previous measurements, even made with the same instrument. The PM results for Draco and Sculptor are (mu_W,mu_N)_Dra = (-0.0562+/-0.0099,-0.1765+/-0.0100) mas/yr and (mu_W,mu_N)_Scl = (-0.0296+/-0.0209,-0.1358 +/-0.0214) mas/yr. The implied Galactocentric velocity vectors for Draco and Sculptor have radial and tangential components: (V_rad,V_tan)_Dra = (-88.6,161.4) …
Observations of the highly isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy KKs 3 = [KK2000] 03 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) are presented. We measured the galaxy distance of $2.12\pm0.07$ Mpc using the Tip of Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method. The total blue absolute magnitude of the galaxy is estimated as $M_B = -10.8$ mag. We briefly discuss the star formation history of KKs 3 derived from its colour-magnitude diagram. According to our calculation, the total stellar mass of the galaxy is $2.3\times10^7M_{\odot}$, and most stars (74\%) were formed at an early epoch mo…
As part of a large Hubble Space Telescope investigation aiming at reaching the faintest stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6752, an ACS/WFC field was the subject of deep optical observations reaching magnitudes as faint as V~30. In this field we report the discovery of Bedin I a dwarf spheroidal galaxy too faint and too close to the core of NGC 6752 for detection in earlier surveys. As it is of broad interest to complete the census of galaxies in the local Universe, in this Letter we provide the position of this new object along with preliminary assessments of its main param eters. Ass…
B and V time-series photometry of the M31 dwarf spheroidal satellite Andromeda XXI (And XXI) was obtained with the Large Binocular Cameras at the Large Binocular Telescope. We have identified 50 variables in And XXI, of which 41 are RR Lyrae stars (37 fundamental-mode RRab, and 4 first-overtone RRc, pulsators) and 9 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs). The average period of the RRab stars (<Pab> = 0.64 days) and the period-amplitude diagram place And~XXI in the class of Oosterhoff II - Oosterhoff-Intermediate objects. From the average luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars we derived the galaxy distance mo…
At high redshift, starburst galaxies present irregular morphologies, with 10-20\%\ of their star formation occurring in giant clumps. These clumpy galaxies are considered to be the progenitors of local disk galaxies. To understand the properties of starbursts at intermediate and low redshift, it is fundamental to track their evolution and possible link with the systems at higher $z$. We present an extensive, systematic, and multi-band search and analysis of the starburst galaxies at redshift ($0 < z < 0.5$) in the COSMOS field, as well as detailed characteristics of their star-forming clumps b…
We present an analysis of new extremely deep images of the resolved stellar population of the Boötes I ultra faint dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These new data were taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (Wide Field Camera) and Wide Field Camera 3 (UVIS), with filters F606W and F814W (essentially V and I), as part of a program to derive the low-mass stellar initial mass function in this galaxy. We compare and contrast two approaches to obtaining the stellar photometry, namely ePSF and DAOPHOT. We identify likely members of Boötes I based on the location of each…
We use analytical and N-body methods to examine the survival of wide stellar binaries against repeated encounters with dark substructures orbiting in the dark matter haloes of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs). Our models adopt cosmologically-motivated conditions wherein dSphs are dark-matter dominated systems that form hierarchically and orbit about a host galaxy. Our analytical estimates show that wide binaries are disrupted at a rate that is proportional to the local density of dark substructures averaged over the life-time of the binary population. The fact that external tides can efficien…
We discuss the state of the assembly of the Hubble Sequence in the mix of bright galaxies at redshift 1.4< z \le 2.5 with a large sample of 1,671 galaxies down to H_{AB}~26, selected from the HST/ACS and WFC3 images of the GOODS--South field obtained as part of the GOODS and CANDELS observations. We investigate the relationship between the star formation properties and morphology using various parametric diagnostics, such as the Sersic light profile, Gini (G), M_{20}, Concentration (C), Asymmetry (A) and multiplicity parameters. Our sample clearly separates into massive, red and passive galaxi…
