The pseudogap phenomenology is one of the enigmas of the physics of high-Tc superconductors. Many members of the cuprate family have now been characterized with high resolution in both real and momentum space, which revealed highly anisotropic Fermi arcs and local domain which break rotational symmetry in the CuO2 plane at the intraunit cell level. While most theoretical approaches to date have focused on the role of electronic correlations and doping-induced disorder to explain these features, we show that many features of the pseudogap phase can be reproduced by considering the interplay between electronic and nonlinear electron-phonon interactions within a model of fluctuating Cu-O-Cu bonds. Remarkably, we find electronic segregation arises naturally without the need to explicitly include disorder. Our approach points not only to the key role played by the oxygen bond in the pseudogap phase, but opens different directions to explore how nonequilibrium lattice excitation can be used to control the properties of the pseudogap phase.
We report results of a muon spin relaxation study of slow magnetic fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of underdoped single-crystalline YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$, $y = 6.77$ and 6.83. The dependence of the dynamic muon spin relaxation rate on applied magnetic field yields the rms magnitude~$B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and correlation time~$τ_c$ of fluctuating local fields at muon sites. The observed relaxation rates do not decrease with decreasing temperature~$T$ below the pseudogap onset at $T^\ast$, as would be expected for a conventional magnetic transition; both $B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and $τ_…
We used high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to reveal the Fermi surface and key transport parameters of the metallic state of the layered Colossal Magnetoresistive (CMR) oxide La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. With these parameters the calculated in-plane conductivity is nearly one order of magnitude larger than the measured DC conductivity. This discrepancy can be accounted for by including the pseudogap which removes at least 90% of the spectral weight at the Fermi energy. Key to the pseudogap and many other properties are the parallel straight Fermi surface sections which are highly su…

We have found a quantitative connection between the evolution of the inhomogeneous nanoscale electronic gaps (INSEG) state detected in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) and the two universal, the upper and the lower, pseudogaps in high-temperature cuprate superconductors (HTCS). When the doping and temperature dependent INSEG map were analyzed by using our proposed hole-scale, we find that the two pseudogaps are connected to two specific coverages of the CuO$_2$ plane by INSEG: the 50\% and 100\% coverages of the CuO$_2$ planes by INSEG corresp…

We analyze non - Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior of fluctuating gap model (FGM) of pseudogap behavior in both 1D and 2D. We discuss in detail quasiparticle renormalization (Z - factor), demonstrating a kind of "marginal" Fermi liquid or Luttinger liquid behavior and topological stability of the "bare" Fermi surface (Luttinger theorem). In 2D case we discuss effective picture of Fermi surface "destruction" both in "hot spots" model of dielectric (AFM, CDW) pseudogap fluctuations, as well as for qualitatively different case of superconducting d - wave fluctuations, reflecting NFL spectral density be…
Sb-NMR/NQR study has revealed a formation of a pseudogap at the Fermi level in the density of states in a valence fluctuating compound CeIrSb. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature, 1/T_1T has a maximum around 300 K and decreases significantly as 1/T_1T ~ T^2, followed by a 1/T_1T = const. relation at low temperature. This temperature dependence of 1/T_1T is well reproduced by assuming a V-shaped energy gap with a residual density of states at the Fermi level. The size of energy gap for CeIrSb is estimated to be about 350 K, which is by one order of magnitude larger t…
We study the physical property of pair density wave (PDW) and fluctuating PDW, and use it to build an effective theory of the strongly interacting pseudogap phase in cuprate high temperature superconductors. In Chapter2, we study how Fulde-Ferrell state, the simplest form of PDW, responds to incident light. The collective motion of the condensate plays a key role; gauge invariance guides us to the correct result. From Chapter 3 to Chapter 7, we construct a pseudogap metallic state by considering quantum fluctuating PDW. We analyze a recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) discovery of perio…
We develop a powerful numerical algorithm for calculating the density of states rho(omega) of the fluctuating gap model, which describes the low-energy physics of disordered Peierls and spin-Peierls chains. We obtain rho(omega) with unprecedented accuracy from the solution of a simple initial value problem for a single Riccati equation. Generating Gaussian disorder with large correlation length xi by means of a simple Markov process, we present a quantitative study of the behavior of rho (omega) in the pseudogap regime. In particular, we show that in the commensurate case and in the absence of…
We describe fluctuating two-dimensional metallic antiferromagnets by transforming to a rotating reference frame in which the electron spin polarization is measured by its projections along the local antiferromagnetic order. This leads to a gauge-theoretic description of an `algebraic charge liquid' involving spinless fermions and a spin S=1/2 complex scalar. We propose a phenomenological effective lattice Hamiltonian which describes the binding of these particles into gauge-neutral, electron-like excitations, and describe its implications for the electron spectral function across the entire Br…
A further discussion of the vortex fluid in the cuprate high Tc superconductors is presented. The crucial property of incompressibility towards the addition of net vorticity, leading to the marked nonlinearity of the response functions, is justified from first principles. We also discuss the Fermi Arc phenomenon of Campuzano as a consequence of the time-fluctuating phase in the vortex fluid.
The origin of the pseudogap (PG) phase and superconducting behaviors in high-Tc superconductors is proposed, based on the picture of Euclidean Q-balls formation, that carry Cooper/local-pair condensates inside their volumes. Unlike the baryonic Q-balls in supersymmetric standard model, the Euclidean Q-balls describe spin-/charge densities, that oscillate in Matsubara time, and are found in the 'nested' repulsive Hubbard model of high-Tc superconductors. Euclidean Q-balls arise due to global invariance of the effective theory under the phase rotation of the Fourier amplitudes of spin-/charge fl…
One of the distinctive features of hole-doped cuprate superconductors is the onset of a `pseudogap' below a temperature $T^*$. Recent experiments suggest that there may be a connection between the existence of the pseudogap and the topology of the Fermi surface. Here, we address this issue by studying the two-dimensional Hubbard model with two distinct numerical methods. We find that the pseudogap only exists when the Fermi surface is hole-like and that, for a broad range of parameters, its opening is concomitant with a Fermi surface topology change from electron- to hole-like. We identify a c…
Giant softening by 30 cm$^{-1}$ of the 490- and 620-cm$^{-1}$ modes is observed by Raman scattering measurements below the Curie temperature of single crystalline LaMnO$_{3+δ}$ ($0.085\leq δ\leq0.125$). A pseudogap-like electronic continuum and a Fano antiresonance at 144 cm$^{-1}$ appear below the charge ordering temperature. This gives evidence for the presence of an orbital fluctuating state and the formation of a hole stripe, respectively. This is further corroborated by a unstructured broadening and shifting of multiphonon features with increasing doping $δ$. Our study suggests the signif…
Superconductivity emerges from the cuprate antiferromagnetic Mott state with hole doping. The resulting electronic structure is not understood, although changes in the state of oxygen atoms appear paramount. Hole doping first destroys the Mott state yielding a weak insulator where electrons localize only at low temperatures without a full energy gap. At higher doping, the 'pseudogap', a weakly conducting state with an anisotropic energy gap and intra-unit-cell breaking of 90\degree-rotational (C4v) symmetry appears. However, a direct visualization of the emergence of these phenomena with incre…
Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy is used to examine the $4a$$\times$$4a$ electronic charge order (CO) in the pseudogap (PG) state above {\it T}$_{\rm c}$ on Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. It is demonstrated that the static CO develops markedly in the inhomogeneous PG state, while it is very weak in the homogeneous PG state. We suggest that this static CO, which is considered to be stabilized by the pinning of the dynamically fluctuating CO, will remain below {\it T}$_{\rm c}$, together with the inhomogeneous gap structure, and coexist with the superconductivity.
We study the nanoscale phase coexistence of ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) and antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) regions by including the effect of AF superexchange and weak disorder in the double exchange model. We use a new Monte Carlo technique, mapping on the disordered spin-fermion problem to an effective short range spin model, with self-consistently computed exchange constants. We recover `cluster coexistence' as seen earlier in exact simulation of small systems. The much larger sizes, $\sim 32 \times 32$, accessible with our technique, allows us to study the cluster distribution for var…
We present an exactly solvable toy model which describes the emergence of a pseudogap in an electronic system due to a fluctuating off-diagonal order parameter. In one dimension our model reduces to the fluctuating gap model (FGM) with a gap Delta (x) that is constrained to be of the form Delta (x) = A e^{i Q x}, where A and Q are random variables. The FGM was introduced by Lee, Rice and Anderson [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{31}}, 462 (1973)] to study fluctuation effects in Peierls chains. We show that their perturbative results for the average density of states are exact for our toy model if we ass…
We study the spin dynamics in underdoped cuprates at low temperatures by considering them as quasi two dimensional d-wave superconductors (dSC) with strong phase fluctuations. An effective theory of spin degrees of freedom of nodal quasiparticles coupled to vortex defects in the phase of the superconducting order parameter is formulated. It represents the minimal extension of the QED3 theory of the pseudogap phase into the superconducting region. The theory predicts a single dSC-SDW transition, which may be fluctuation induced first order, without the region of coexistence between the two orde…
Evidence for intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetic order in the pseudogap region of high-$T_c$ cuprates below a temperature $T^\ast$ is found in several studies, but NMR and $μ$SR experiments do not observe the expected static local magnetic fields. It has been noted, however, that such fields could be averaged by fluctuations. Our measurements of muon spin relaxation rates in single crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ reveal magnetic fluctuations of the expected order of magnitude that exhibit critical slowing down at $T^\ast$. These results are strong evidence for fluctuating IUC magnetic order in the p…
Recent observations of broken symmetries have partly demystified the pseudogap phase. Here we review evidence for long-range intra-unit-cell(IUC) nematic order and its unexpectedly strong coupling to the phase of the fluctuating stripes in the pseudogap states of underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. In particular, we focus on the analysis techniques that reveal this evidence in scanning tunneling spectroscopy data, the definition of the extracted IUC nematic order parameter, and a phenomenological theory of the coupling between the IUC nematic order and the previously reported coexisting …
A pseudogap (PG) was introduced by Mott to describe a state of matter which has a minimum in the density of states at the Fermi level, deep enough for states to become localized. It can arise either from Coulomb repulsion between electrons, or due to an incipient charge or spin order, or a combination of the two. These states are rapidly fluctuating in time with random phase, so they are hard to observe experimentally. Here we present the first coherent quench measurements of the dynamical transition to the pseudogap state in the prototype high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_…
We present a SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating magnetic order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The theory is based on a fractionalization of electrons in fermionic chargons and bosonic spinons. The chargons undergo Néel or spiral magnetic order below a density dependent transition temperature $T^*$. Fluctuations of the spin orientation are described by a non-linear sigma model obtained from a gradient expansion of the spinon action. The spin stiffnesses are computed from a renormalization group improved random phase approximation. Our approximations are applicable for a weak or moderate H…
We compute the electronic Green's function of the topologically ordered Higgs phase of a SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating antiferromagnetism on the square lattice. The results are compared with cluster extensions of dynamical mean field theory, and quantum Monte Carlo calculations, on the pseudogap phase of the strongly interacting hole-doped Hubbard model. Good agreement is found in the momentum, frequency, hopping, and doping dependencies of the spectral function and electronic self-energy. We show that lines of (approximate) zeros of the zero-frequency electronic Green's function are signs…
The pseudogap metal phase of the hole-doped cuprate superconductors has two seemingly unrelated characteristics: a gap in the electronic spectrum in the `anti-nodal' region of the square lattice Brillouin zone, and discrete broken symmetries. We present a SU(2) gauge theory of quantum fluctuations of magnetically ordered states which appear in a classical theory of square lattice antiferromagnets, in a spin density wave mean field theory of the square lattice Hubbard model, and in a CP$^1$ theory of spinons. This theory leads to metals with an antinodal gap, and topological order which intertw…
Strongly correlated electron systems host a variety of poorly understood correlations in their high temperature normal state. Unlike ordered phases defined by order parameters, these normal state phases are often defined through unconventional properties such as strange metallic transport or spectroscopic pseudogaps. Characterizing the microscopic correlations in the normal state is necessary to elucidate mechanisms that lead to these properties and their connection to ground state orders. Here we establish the presence of intertwined charge and spin stripes in the strange metal normal state o…
We report on a study on a representative set of Fe$_{2}$P-based MnFePSi samples by means of $^{55}$Mn NMR in both zero and applied magnetic field. The first-order nature of the magnetic transition is demonstrated by truncated order parameter curves with a large value of the local ordered moment at the Curie point, even at compositions where the transition appears second order from magnetic measurements. No weak ferromagnetic order could be detected at Si-poor compositions showing the kinetic arrest phenomenon, but rather the phase separation of fully ferromagnetic domains from volume fractions…
We investigate the role of disorder on the superconducting (SC) fluctuation in short coherence length d-wave superconductors. The particular intetest is focused on the disorder-induced microscopic inhomogeneity of SC fluctuation and its effect on the pseudogap phenomena. We formulate the self-consistent 1-loop order theory for the SC fluctuation in inhomogeneous systems and analyze the disordered $t$-$t'$-$V$ model. The SC correlation function, electronic DOS and the critical temperature are estimated. The SC fluctuation is localized like a nanoscale granular structure when the coherence lengt…
I study the effect of Coulomb interaction on superconducting order in a d-wave lattice superconductor at T=0 by considering the superconducting saddle point in the two dimensional t-J-U model with an on-site repulsion U. The theory of low energy phase fluctuations around this saddle point is derived in terms of the effective hard-core bosons (representing the density of spin-up electrons and the order parameter phase), interacting with the fluctuating density of spin-down electrons. Whereas the saddle point value of the gap is found to monotonically increase towards half filling, the phase sti…

In order to explain the emergence of the anomalous pseudogap state and high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates, intense research activity over three decades has focused on unravelling the connection between the various instabilities of the underdoped regime. In the high-temperature superconductor (Ca$_x$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_3$O$_y$ (CLBLCO) isovalent chemical substitution produces smooth changes to the CuO$_2$ plane buckling and the Cu(II)-to-apical-oxygen distance, allowing us to study the interdependence of charge-density-wave (CDW) order, superconductivity a…
Twenty years of extensive research has yet to produce a general consensus on the origin of high temperature superconductivity (HTS). However, several generic characteristics of the cuprate superconductors have emerged as the essential ingredients of and/or constraints on any viable microscopic model of HTS. Besides a Tc of order 100K, the most prominent on the list include a d-wave superconducting gap with Fermi liquid nodal excitations, a d-wave pseudogap with the characteristic temperature scale T*, an anomalous doping-dependent oxygen isotope shift, nanometer-scale gap inhomogeneity, etc.. …
Particle-wave duality suggests we think of electrons as waves stretched across a sample, with wavevector k proportional to their momentum. Their arrangement in "k-space," and in particular the shape of the Fermi surface, where the highest energy electrons of the system reside, determine many material properties. Here we use a novel extension of Fourier transform scanning tunneling microscopy to probe the Fermi surface of the strongly inhomogeneous Bi-based cuprate superconductors. Surprisingly, we find that rather than being globally defined, the Fermi surface changes on nanometer length scale…

The simple structure of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) is ideal among cuprates for study of the pseudogap phase as a broken symmetry state. We have performed $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on an underdoped Hg1201 crystal with transition temperature of 74 K to look for circulating orbital currents proposed theoretically and inferred from neutron scattering. The narrow spectra preclude static local fields in the pseudogap phase at the apical site, suggesting that the moments observed with neutrons are fluctuating. The NMR frequency shifts are consistent with a dipolar field from the Cu$…

Angle resolved photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of underdoped cuprates have revealed the presence of a truncated Fermi surface consisting of Fermi arcs. We compare a number of proposed models for the arcs, and find that the one that best models the data is a d-wave energy gap with a lifetime broadening whose temperature dependence is suggestive of fluctuating pairs.
Surface probes such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) have detected complex patterns at the nanoscale, indicative of electronic inhomogeneity, in a variety of high temperature superconductors. In cuprates, the pattern formation is associated with the pseudogap phase, a precursor to the high temperature superconducting state. Symmetry breaking (i.e. from C4 to C2) in the form of electronic nematicity has recently been implicated as a unifying theme of the pseudogap phase,[1] however the fundamental physics governing the nanoscale pattern formation has not yet been identified. Here we use u…
Unconventional symmetry-breaking phenomena due to nontrivial order parameters attract increasing attention in strongly correlated electron systems. Here, we predict theoretically the occurrence of nanoscale spontaneous spin-current, called the spin loop-current (sLC) order, as a promising origin of the pseudogap and electronic nematicity in cuprates. We reveal that the sLC is driven by the odd-parity electron-hole condensation that are mediated by transverse spin fluctuations around the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. At the same temperature, odd-parity magnon pair condensation occurs. The sLC or…
Large pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 Tesla are used to suppress the contribution of superconducting fluctuations (SCF) to the ab-plane conductivity above Tc in a series of YBa2Cu3O6+x single crystals. The fluctuation conductivity is found to vanish nearly exponentially with temperature, allowing us to determine precisely the field H'c(T) and the temperature T'c above which the SCFs are fully suppressed. T'c is always found much smaller than the pseudogap temperature. A careful investigation near optimal doping shows that T'c is higher than the pseudogap T*, which indicates that the pseudogap …
Interplay between antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and electron-phonon coupling and the origin of the peak-dip-hump structure in the anti-nodal spectrum of high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductors
Electron pairing and ferromagnetism in various cluster geometries are studied with emphasis on tetrahedron and square pyramid under variation of interaction strength, electron doping and temperature. These exact calculations of charge and spin collective excitations and pseudogaps yield intriguing insights into level crossing degeneracies, phase separation and condensation. Criteria for spin-charge separation and reconciliation driven by interaction strength, next nearest coupling and temperature are found. Phase diagrams resemble a number of inhomogeneous, coherent and incoherent nanoscale ph…
Within the phase fluctuation model for the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors we identify a novel statistical "Berry phase" interaction between the nodal quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices. The effective action describing this model assumes the form of an anisotropic Euclidean quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions (QED_3) and naturally generates the marginal Fermi liquid behavior for its fermionic excitations. The doping axis in the x-T phase diagram emerges as a quantum critical line which regulates low energy fermiology. We examine the merits of our theory in light of avai…
We consider the effect of classical phase fluctuations on the quasiparticle spectra of underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors in the pseudogap regime above $T_c$. We show that photoemission and tunneling spectroscopy data are well accounted for by a simple model in which mean field d-wave quasiparticles are semiclasically coupled to supercurrents induced by fluctuating unbound vortex-antivortex pairs. We argue that the data imply that transverse phase fluctuations are important at temperatures above $T_c$, while longitudinal fluctuations are unimportant at all temperatures.
We study the coexisting smectic modulations and intra-unit-cell nematicity in the pseudogap states of underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. By visualizing their spatial components separately, we identified 2πtopological defects throughout the phase-fluctuating smectic states. Imaging the locations of large numbers of these topological defects simultaneously with the fluctuations in the intra-unit-cell nematicity revealed strong empirical evidence for a coupling between them. From these observations, we propose a Ginzburg-Landau functional describing this coupling and demonstrate how it can explain the c…
Striped phases in which spin and charge separate into different regions in the material have been proposed to account for the unusual properties of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors. The driving force for a striped phase is the charge distribution, which self-organizes itself into linear regions. In the highest $T_c$ materials such regions are not static but fluctuate in time. Neutrons, having no charge, can not directly observe these fluctuations but they can be observed indirectly by their effect on the phonons. Neutron scattering measurements have been made using a specialized techniqu…
The recent observation of quantum oscillations in underdoped high-Tc superconductors, combined with their negative Hall coefficient at low temperature, reveals that the Fermi surface of hole-doped cuprates includes a small electron pocket. This strongly suggests that the large hole Fermi surface characteristic of the overdoped regime undergoes a reconstruction caused by the onset of some order which breaks translational symmetry. Here we consider the possibility that this order is "stripe" order, a form of charge / spin modulation observed most clearly in materials like Eu-doped and Nd-doped L…
The intrinsic metastable crystal structure of the cuprates results in local dynamical lattice instabilities, strongly coupled to the density fluctuations of the charge carriers. They acquire in this way simultaneously both, delocalized and localized features. It is responsible for a partial fractioning of the Fermi surface, i.e., the Fermi surface gets hidden in a region around the anti-nodal points, because of the opening of a pseudogap in the normal state, arising from a partial charge localization. The high energy localized single-particle features are a result of a segregation of the homog…
We describe the phase diagram of a 2+1 dimensional SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating incommensurate spin density waves for the hole-doped cuprates. Our primary assumption is that all low energy fermionic excitations are gauge neutral and electron-like, while the spin density wave order is fractionalized into Higgs fields transforming as adjoints of the gauge SU(2). The confining phase of the gauge theory is a conventional Fermi liquid with a large Fermi surface (and its associated $d$-wave superconductor). There is a quantum phase transition to a Higgs phase describing the `pseudogap' at lower…
The central puzzle of the cuprate superconductors at low hole density is the nature of the pseudogap regime. It has a number of seemingly distinct experimental signatures: a suppression of the paramagnetic spin susceptibility at high temperatures, low energy electronic excitations that extend over arcs in the Brillouin zone, X-ray detection of charge density wave order at intermediate temperatures, and quantum oscillations at high magnetic fields and low temperatures. We show that a model of competing charge density wave and superconducting orders provides a unified description of the intermed…
