We report on searches for neutrinos and antineutrinos from astrophysical sources performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Electron antineutrinos ($\barν_e$) are detected in an organic liquid scintillator through the inverse $β$-decay reaction. In the present work we set model-independent upper limits in the energy range 1.8-16.8 MeV on neutrino fluxes from unknown sources that improve our previous results, on average, by a factor 2.5. Using the same data set, we first obtain experimental constraints on the diffuse supernova $\barν_e$ fluxes in the previously unexplored region below 8 MeV. A search for $\barν_e$ in the solar neutrino flux is also presented: the presence of $\barν_e$ would be a manifestation of a non-zero anomalous magnetic moment of the neutrino, making possible its conversion to antineutrinos in the strong magnetic field of the Sun. We obtain a limit for a solar $\barν_e$ flux of 384 cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ (90% C.L.), assuming an undistorted solar $^{8}$B neutrinos energy spectrum, that corresponds to a transition probability $p_{ ν_e \rightarrow \barν_{e}}<$ 7.2$\times$10$^{-5}$ (90% C.L.) for E$_{\bar ν_e}$ $>$ 1.8 MeV. At lower energies, by investigating the spectral shape of elastic scattering events, we obtain a new limit on solar $^{7}$Be-$ν_e$ conversion into $\barν_e$ of $p_{ ν_e \rightarrow \bar ν_{e}}<$ 0.14 (90% C.L.) at 0.862 keV. Last, we investigate solar flares as possible neutrino sources and obtain the strongest up-to-date limits on the fluence of neutrinos of all flavor neutrino below 3-7 ,MeV. Assuming the neutrino flux to be proportional to the flare's intensity, we exclude an intense solar flare as the cause of the observed excess of events in run 117 of the Cl-Ar Homestake experiment.
The very low radioactive background of the Borexino detector, its large size, and the well proved capability to detect both low energy neutrino and anti-neutrino make an ideal case for the study of short distance neutrino oscillations with artificial sources at Gran Sasso. This paper describes the possible layouts of 51Cr neutrino and 144Ce-144Pr anti-neutrino source experiments in Borexino and shows the expected sensitivity for three possible different phases of the experiment.
We have measured the speed of muon neutrinos with the Borexino detector using short-bunch CNGS beams. The final result for the difference in time-of-flight between a <E>=17 GeV muon neutrino and a particle moving at the speed of light in vacuum is δt = 0.8 \pm 0.7stat \pm 2.9sys ns, well consistent with zero.
The strategy to install Borexino's Thermal Monitoring and Management System (BTMMS) successfully stabilized the thermal environment inside the Borexino neutrino observatory, which is understood to be a necessary step to improve and minimize radioactive background contamination inside the active volume of the detector, allowing for it to achieve better sensitivity in the regions of interest. Two-dimensional numerical simulations to achieve a proper understanding of Borexino's fluid-dynamics were developed and optimized for different regions and periods of interest, focusing on the most critical…
Borexino collaboration reported about first measurement of solar CNO-$ν$ interaction rate in Borexino detector. This result is consistent with Hydridic Earth model prediction about the contribution of $^{40}$K geo-antineutrino interactions in single Borexino events. The potassium abundance in the Earth in the range $1 ÷1.5$\% of the Earth mass could give the observed enhancement of counting rate above expected CNO-$ν$ counting rate. The Earth intrinsic heat flux must be in the range $200 ÷300$ TW for this potassium abundance. This value of the heat flux can explain the ocean heating observed b…
BOREXINO, a real-time device for low energy neutrino spectroscopy is nearing completion of construction in the underground laboratories at Gran Sasso, Italy (LNGS). The experiment's goal is the direct measurement of the flux of 7Be solar neutrinos of all flavors via neutrino-electron scattering in an ultra-pure scintillation liquid. Seeded by a series of innovations which were brought to fruition by large scale operation of a 4-ton test detector at LNGS, a new technology has been developed for BOREXINO. It enables sub-MeV solar neutrino spectroscopy for the first time. This paper describes the…
The main goal of the Borexino detector, in its final phase of construction in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory, is the direct observation and measurement of the low energy component of neutrinos coming from the Sun. The unique low energy sensitivity and ultra-low background bring new capabilities to attack problems in neutrino physiscs other than solar ones. Investigation about the study of Supernoavae neutrinos and neutrino coming from the Earth (Geoneutrinos) are here resumed.
Borexino is a large unsegmented calorimeter featuring 300 tons of liquid scintillator, contained in a 8.5 meter nylon vessel, viewed by 2200 PMTs. The main goal of Borexino is the study, in real time, of low energy solar neutrinos, and in particular, the monoenergetic neutrinos coming from $^7Be$, which is one of the missing links on the solar neutrino problem. The achievement of high radiopurity level, in the order of $10^{-16} g/g$ of U/Th equivalent, necessary to the detection of the low energy component of the solar neutrino flux, was proved in the Borexino prototype: the Counting Test Fac…
Measuring all neutrino components is the most direct way to test the standard solar model (SSM). Despite the great results obtained so far, important questions such as the solar metallicity remain open. A precise measurement of the solar pp chain and the CNO cycle would settle this controversy between high (HZ) and low (LZ) metallicity compositions of the Sun. Solar neutrinos allow the determination of oscillation parameters, in particular the $θ_{12}$ mixing angle and, to a lesser degree the $Δm^2_{12}$ mass splitting. Furthermore the measurement of the electron neutrino survival probability …
We report on a search for the day-night asymmetry of the Be-7 solar neutrino rate measured by Borexino at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy. The measured value, Adn=0.001 +- 0.012 (stat) +- 0.007 (syst), shows the absence of a significant asymmetry. This result alone rejects the so-called LOW solution at more than 8.5 sigma. Combined with the other solar neutrino data, it isolates the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) -- MSW solution at DeltaChi2 > 190 without relying on the assumption of CPT symmetry in the neutrino sector. We also show that including the day-night asymmetry, data …
We use the Borexino 153.6 ton.year data to place constraints on non-standard neutrino-electron interactions, taking into account the uncertainty in the 7Be solar neutrino flux, and backgrounds due to 85Kr and 210Bi beta-decay. We find that the bounds are comparable to existing bounds from all other experiments. Further improvement can be expected in Phase II of Borexino due to the reduction in the 85Kr background.
Borexino is a low threshold liquid-scintillator detector for solar neutrinos located in the LNGS underground laboratory, Italy. Because of the ultra-high radio purity it is the first experiment able to do a real time analysis of the low energetic solar neutrinos. A detection of the solar 7Be neutrinos with a rate of 47+-7 counts/day/100tons can be reported (192 days of live time measurement). 8B neutrinos are observed with a rate of 0.26+-0.06 counts/day/100tons after 246 live days. All detected neutrino fluxes agree with the SSM predictions in case of the MSW-LMA oscillation solution. Borexin…
Borexino is a 280-ton liquid scintillator detector located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Since the start of its data taking in May 2007, it has provided several measurements of low-energy neutrinos from various sources. At the base of its success, lie unprecedented levels of radio-purity and extensive thermal stabilisation, both resulting from a years-long effort of the collaboration. Solar neutrinos, emitted in the hydrogen-to-helium fusion in the solar core, are important for the understanding of our star, as well as neutrino properties. Borexino is the only experiment…
Borexino is a unique detector able to perform measurement of solar neutrinos fluxes in the energy region around 1 MeV or below due to its low level of radioactive background. It was constructed at the LNGS underground laboratory with a goal of solar $^{7}$Be neutrino flux measurement with 5\% precision. The goal has been successfully achieved marking the end of the first stage of the experiment. A number of other important measurements of solar neutrino fluxes have been performed during the first stage. Recently the collaboration conducted successful liquid scintillator repurification campaign…
Borexino is a solar neutrino experiment running at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The radioactive background levels in the liquid scintillator target meet or even exceed design goals, opening unanticipated opportunities. The main results, so far, are the measurement of the $^7$Be solar neutrino flux (the first ever done) and the measurement of the $^8$B neutrino flux performed with electron energy threshold of 2.8 MeV. The short and medium term perspectives are summarized in the conclusions.
The recent released results of 153.62 ton year exposure of solar neutrino data in Borexino are here discussed. Borexino is a multi-purpose detector with large volume liquid scintillator, located in the underground halls of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The experiment is running since 2007. The first realtime 7Be solar neutrino measurement has been released in 2008. Thanks to the precise detector calibration in 2009, the 7Be flux measurement has been reached with an accuracy better than 5%. The result related to the day/night effect in the $^7$Be energy region is also discus…
We derive constraints on all possible general neutrino-electron interactions (scalar, vector, pseudoscalar, axialvector and tensor) using the recent real time Borexino event rate measurements of $pp$, $pep$ and $^{7}Be$ solar neutrinos. The limits improve several previous ones from TEXONO and CHARM-II for incoming electron and muon neutrinos, and are the first ones for the tau flavor. Future improvements by next-generation solar neutrino experiments are also studied. The limits extend the physics reach of solar neutrino measurements to TeV-scale physics. Finally, the different properties of th…
We estimate how well we will know the parameters of solar neutrino oscillations after KamLAND and Borexino. The expected error on Delta m^2 is few per-mille in the VO and QVO regions, few per-cent in the LMA region, and around 10% in the LOW region. The expected error on sin^2 2theta is around 5%. KamLAND and Borexino will tell unambiguously which specific new measurement, dedicated to pp solar neutrinos, is able to contribute to the determination of theta and perhaps of Delta m^2. The present data suggest as more likely outcomes: no measurement, or the total pp rate, or its day/night variatio…
Borexino is an experiment designed to detect in real-time low energy solar neutrinos. It is installed at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory and has started taking data in May 2007. We report the direct measurement of the 7Be solar neutrino signal rate after 1 year of data taking. Implications and perspectives are discussed.
Borexino is a massive, calorimetric, liquid scintillator detector aimed at the detection of low energy sub-MeV solar neutrinos, installed at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. After several years of construction, data taking started in May 2007, providing immediately incontrovertible evidence of the unprecedented radiopurity of the target mass, at the level required to ensure the successful detection of 7Be solar neutrinos, which was then announced in the 2007 summer. In this talk first the main technical characteristics of the detector will be highlighted, with special emphasis on the exceptional pur…
We report on the search for anti-neutrinos of yet unknown origin with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In particular, a hypothetical anti-neutrino flux from the Sun is investigated. Anti-neutrinos are detected through the neutron inverse $β$ decay reaction in a large liquid organic scintillator target. We set a new upper limit for a hypothetical solar $\barν_e$ flux of 760 ${\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$, obtained assuming an undistorted solar $^8$B energy spectrum. This corresponds to a limit on the transition probability of solar neutrinos to anti-neutrinos of $1…
Assuming that the observed deficit of solar neutrinos is due to the interaction of their transition magnetic moment with the solar magnetic field we derive the predictions for the forthcoming Borexino experiment. Three different model magnetic field profiles which give very good global fits of the currently available solar neutrino data are used. The expected signal at Borexino is significantly lower than those predicted by the LMA, LOW and VO neutrino oscillation solutions of the solar neutrino problem. It is similar to that of the SMA oscillation solution which, however, is strongly disfavou…
We report an improved geo-neutrino measurement with Borexino from 2056 days of data taking. The present exposure is $(5.5\pm0.3)\times10^{31}$ proton$\times$yr. Assuming a chondritic Th/U mass ratio of 3.9, we obtain $23.7 ^{+6.5}_{-5.7} (stat) ^{+0.9}_{-0.6} (sys)$ geo-neutrino events. The null observation of geo-neutrinos with Borexino alone has a probability of $3.6 \times 10^{-9}$ (5.9$σ$). A geo-neutrino signal from the mantle is obtained at 98\% C.L. The radiogenic heat production for U and Th from the present best-fit result is restricted to the range 23-36 TW, taking into account the u…
We report the measurement of electron neutrino elastic scattering from 8B solar neutrinos with 3 MeV energy threshold by the Borexino detector in Gran Sasso (Italy). The rate of solar neutrino-induced electron scattering events above this energy in Borexino is 0.217 +- 0.038 (stat) +- 0.008 (syst) cpd/100 t, which corresponds to the equivalent unoscillated flux of (2.4 +- 0.4 (stat) +- 0.1 (syst))x10^6 cm^-2 s^-1, in good agreement with measurements from SNO and SuperKamiokaNDE. Assuming the 8B neutrino flux predicted by the high metallicity Standard Solar Model, the average 8B neutrino surviv…
We calculate the event rates induced by high-intensity radioactive sources of nu_e (51Cr) and of anti-nu_e (90Sr), to be located near the BOREXINO detector. Calculations are performed both in the standard case and assuming non-standard properties of neutrinos, including flavor oscillations, neutrino electromagnetic interactions, and deviations from the standard vector and axial couplings in the nu_e-e interaction. It is shown that, in some cases, the current limits on non-standard neutrino properties can be significantly improved.
We present a measurement of the geo--neutrino signal obtained from 1353 days of data with the Borexino detector at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. With a fiducial exposure of (3.69 $\pm$ 0.16) $\times$ $10^{31}$ proton $\times$ year after all selection cuts and background subtraction, we detected (14.3 $\pm$ 4.4) geo-neutrino events assuming a fixed chondritic mass Th/U ratio of 3.9. This corresponds to a geo-neutrino signal $S_{geo}$ = (38.8 $\pm$ 12.0) TNU with just a 6 $\times$ $10^{-6}$ probability for a null geo-neutrino measurement. With U and Th left as free parameters in …
Borexino, a large volume detector for low energy neutrino spectroscopy, is currently running underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The main goal of the experiment is the real-time measurement of sub MeV solar neutrinos, and particularly of the mono energetic (862 keV) Be7 electron capture neutrinos, via neutrino-electron scattering in an ultra-pure liquid scintillator. This paper is mostly devoted to the description of the detector structure, the photomultipliers, the electronics, and the trigger and calibration systems. The real performance of the detector, which alwa…
We discuss the limits on the neutrino magnetic moment and hypothetical interactions with a hidden unparticle sector, coming from the first neutrino data release of the Borexino experiment. The observed spectrum in Borexino depends weakly on the solar model used in the analysis, since most of the signal comes from the mono-energetic 7Be neutrinos. This fact allows us to calibrate the nu-e scattering cross section through the spectral shape. In this way, we have derived a limit on the magnetic moment for the neutrinos coming from the Sun (in which a nu_mu and nu_tau component is present): mu_nu<…
Borexino is an experiment for low energy neutrino spectroscopy at the Gran Sasso underground laboratories. It is designed to measure the mono-energetic $^7$Be solar neutrino flux in real time, via neutrino-electron elastic scattering in ultra-pure organic liquid scintillator. Borexino has the potential to also detect neutrinos from the \emph{pep} fusion process and the CNO cycle. For this measurement to be possible, radioactive contamination in the detector must be kept extremely low. Once sufficiently clean conditions are met, the main background source is $^{11}$C, produced in reactions indu…
Borexino is a large-volume liquid scintillator detector installed in the underground halls of the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. After several years of construction, data taking started in May 2007. The Borexino phase I ended after about three years of data taking. Borexino provided the first real time measurement of the $^{7}$Be solar neutrino interaction rate with accuracy better than 5% and confirmed the absence of its day-night asymmetry with 1.4% precision. This latter Borexino results alone rejects the LOW region of solar neutrino oscillation parameters at more than 8.5 $σ…
A direct measurement of the 0.862 MeV 7Be solar neutrino interaction rate performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso yields 46.0$\pm1.5_{\rm stat}$$^{+1.6}_{-1.5\,\rm syst}$ counts/day/(100 tons). Our result is the first direct measurement of a sub-MeV solar neutrino rate with an accuracy better than 5%. The hypothesis of no oscillation for 7Be solar neutrinos is rejected at 4.9$σ$ C.L. Using the latest Standard Solar Model (SSM) flux predictions, the result leads directly to a precise determination of the survival probability for solar $ν_e$'s in vacuum, a…
Energy-dependent solar neutrino flux reduction caused by the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) effect is applied to the Exact Parity Model. Several scenarios are possible, depending on the region of parameter space chosen. The interplay between intergenerational MSW transitions and vacuum ``intragenerational'' ordinary-mirror neutrino oscillations is discussed. Expectations for the ratio of charged to neutral current event rates at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) are estimated. The implications of the various scenarios for the Boron neutrino energy spectrum and BOREXINO are briefly dis…
We report the measurement of sub-MeV solar neutrinos through the use of their associated Cherenkov radiation, performed with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The measurement is achieved using a novel technique that correlates individual photon hits of events to the known position of the Sun. In an energy window between 0.54 MeV to 0.74 MeV, selected using the dominant scintillation light, we have measured 10887$^{+2386}_{-2103} (\mathrm{stat.})\pm 947 (\mathrm{syst.})$ ($68\%$ confidence interval) solar neutrinos out of 19904 total events. This corresponds to a…
The KamLAND and Borexino experiments have detected electron antineutrinos produced in the decay chains of natural thorium and uranium (Th and U geoneutrinos). We analyze the energy spectra of current geoneutrino data in combination with solar and long-baseline reactor neutrino data, with marginalized three-neutrino oscillation parameters. We consider the case with unconstrained Th and U event rates in KamLAND and Borexino, as well as cases with fewer degrees of freedom, as obtained by successively assuming for both experiments a common Th/U ratio, a common scaling of Th+U event rates, and a ch…
The present experimental status does not exclude weak-strength non-standard interactions of neutrinos with electrons. These interactions can be revealed in solar neutrino experiments. Our discussion covers several aspects related to this issue. First, we perform an analysis of the Super Kamiokande and SNO data to investigate their sensitivity to such interactions. In particular, we show that the ν_e oscillation into sterile neutrinos can be still allowed if ν_e has extra interactions of the proper strength. Second, we suggest that the Borexino detector can provide good signatures for these non…
Borexino is a massive calorimetric liquid scintillation detector whose installation has been completed in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory. The focus of the experiment is on the direct and real time measurement of the flux of neutrinos produced in the $^{7}Be$ electron capture reaction in the Sun. Furthermore, recent studies about the reduction of the $^{11}C$ background through suitable rejection techniques demonstrated the possibility to open an interesting additional observation window in the energy region of the pep and CNO solar neutrinos. Beyond the solar neutrino program, the detec…
The Borexino experiment, located in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, is an organic liquid scintillator detector conceived for the real time spectroscopy of low energy solar neutrinos. The data taking campaign phase I (2007 - 2010) has allowed the first independent measurements of 7Be, 8B and pep fluxes as well as the first measurement of anti-neutrinos from the earth. After a purification of the scintillator, Borexino is now in phase II since 2011. We review here the recent results achieved during 2013, concerning the seasonal modulation in the 7Be signal, the study of cosmogenic background…
Borexino has been running since May 2007 at the LNGS with the primary goal of detecting solar neutrinos. The detector, a large, unsegmented liquid scintillator calorimeter characterized by unprecedented low levels of intrinsic radioactivity, is optimized for the study of the lower energy part of the spectrum. During the Phase-I (2007-2010) Borexino first detected and then precisely measured the flux of the 7Be solar neutrinos, ruled out any significant day-night asymmetry of their interaction rate, made the first direct observation of the pep neutrinos, and set the tightest upper limit on the …
We observed, for the first time, solar neutrinos in the 1.0-1.5 MeV energy range. We measured the rate of pep solar neutrino interactions in Borexino to be [3.1+-0.6(stat)+-0.3(syst)] counts/(day x 100 ton) and provided a constraint on the CNO solar neutrino interaction rate of <7.9 counts/(day x 100 ton) (95% C.L.). The absence of the solar neutrino signal is disfavored at 99.97% C.L., while the absence of the pep signal is disfavored at 98% C.L. This unprecedented sensitivity was achieved by adopting novel data analysis techniques for the rejection of cosmogenic 11C, the dominant background …
We detected the seasonal modulation of the $^7$Be neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. The period, amplitude, and phase of the observed time evolution of the signal are consistent with its solar origin, and the absence of an annual modulation is rejected at 99.99\% C.L. The data are analyzed using three methods: the sinusoidal fit, the Lomb-Scargle and the Empirical Mode Decomposition techniques, which all yield results in excellent agreement.
Liquid scintillator detectors play a central role in the detection of neutrinos from various sources. In particular, it is the only technique used so far for the precision spectroscopy of sub-MeV solar neutrinos, as demonstrated by the Borexino experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy. The benefit of a high light yield, and thus a low energy threshold and a good energy resolution, comes at the cost of the directional information featured by water Cherenkov detectors, measuring $^8$B solar neutrinos above a few MeV. In this paper we provide the first directionality measurement …
I give an overview of the recent developments in the solar neutrino field. I focus on the Borexino detector, which has uncovered the solar neutrino spectrum below 5 MeV, providing new tests and confirmation for solar neutrino oscillations. I report on the updated measurements of the 8B solar neutrino flux by water Cherenkov and organic scintillator detectors. I review the precision measurement of the 7Be solar neutrino flux by Borexino and the search for its day-night asymmetry. I present Borexino's latest result on the study of pep and CNO neutrinos. Finally, I discuss the outstanding questio…
Neutrinos emitted in the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen (CNO) fusion cycle in the Sun are a sub-dominant, yet crucial component of solar neutrinos whose flux has not been measured yet. The Borexino experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy) has a unique opportunity to detect them directly thanks to the detector's radiopurity and the precise understanding of the detector backgrounds. We discuss the sensitivity of Borexino to CNO neutrinos, which is based on the strategies we adopted to constrain the rates of the two most relevant background sources, pep neutrinos from the solar pp-…
Electron antineutrino interactions above the inverse beta decay energy of protons ($E_\barν_e>$1.8) where looked for with the Borexino Counting Test Facility (CTF). One candidate event survived after rejection of background, which included muon-induced neutrons and random coincidences. An upper limit on the solar $\barν_{e}$ flux, assumed having the $^8$B solar neutrino energy spectrum, of 1.1$\times10^{5}$ cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$ (90% C.L.) was set with a 7.8 ton $\times$ year exposure. This upper limit corresponds to a solar neutrino transition probability, $ν_{e} \to \barν_{e}$, of 0.02 (90% C.L…
We examine the maximal $ν_e --> ν_s$ and $ν_e --> ν_μ,τ$ oscillation solutions to the solar neutrino problem. These solutions lead to roughly a 50% solar flux reduction for the large parameter range $3\times 10^{-10} < δm^2/eV^2 < 10^{-3}$. It is known that the earth regeneration effect may cause a potentially large night-day asymmetry even for maximal neutrino oscillations. We investigate the night-day asymmetry predictions for the forthcoming Borexino measurement of the ^7Be neutrinos for both maximal $ν_e --> ν_s$ and $ν_e --> ν_μ,τ$ oscillations. If $y \times 10^{-8} < δm^2/eV^2 < 4y \time…
We present a detailed analysis of the spectral data of Borexino Phase II, with the aim of exploiting its full potential to constrain scenarios beyond the Standard Model. In particular, we quantify the constraints imposed on neutrino magnetic moments, neutrino non-standard interactions, and several simplified models with light scalar, pseudoscalar or vector mediators. Our analysis shows perfect agreement with those performed by the collaboration on neutrino magnetic moments and neutrino non-standard interactions in the same restricted cases and expands beyond those, stressing the interplay betw…
We propose to include in the analysis of Borexino single event energy spectrum the scattering of $^{40}$K geo-antineutrinos by scintillator electrons. The Hydridic Earth model predicts the concentration of potassium in modern Earth from 1\% to 4\% of the Earth mass. We calculated contribution of $^{40}$K geo-antineutrino interactions in single Borexino events for these concentrations. This contribution is comparable to the contribution from the interaction of CNO neutrinos. We discuss the reasons for using the Hydridic Earth model.
Since the beginning of 2012, the Borexino collaboration has been reporting precision measurements of the solar neutrino fluxes, emitted in the proton-proton chain and in the Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen cycle. The experimental sensitivity achieved in Phase-II and Phase-III of the Borexino data taking made it possible to detect the annual modulation of the solar neutrino interaction rate due to the eccentricity of Earth's orbit, with a statistical significance greater than 5$σ$. This is the first precise measurement of the Earth's orbital parameters based solely on solar neutrinos and an additional s…
Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector located at the Laboratori Nazionale del Gran Sasso, Italy with the main goal to measure solar neutrinos. The experiment recently provided the first direct experimental evidence of CNO-cycle neutrinos in the Sun, rejecting the no-CNO signal hypothesis with a significance greater than 5$σ$ at 99\%C.L. The intrinsic $^{210}$Bi is an important background for this analysis due to its similar spectral shape to that of CNO neutrinos. $^{210}$Bi can be measured through its daughter $^{210}$Po which can be distinguished through an event-by-event basis via puls…
Cosmogenic radio-nuclei are an important source of background for low-energy neutrino experiments. In Borexino, cosmogenic $^{11}$C decays outnumber solar $pep$ and CNO neutrino events by about ten to one. Highly efficient identification of this background is mandatory for these neutrino analyses. We present here the details of the most consolidated strategy, used throughout Borexino solar neutrino measurements. It hinges upon finding the space-time correlations between $^{11}$C decays, the preceding parent muons and the accompanying neutrons. This article describes the working principles and …
Neutrino produced in a chain of nuclear reactions in the Sun starting from the fusion of two protons, for the first time has been detected in a real-time detector in spectrometric mode. The unique properties of the Borexino detector provided an oppurtunity to disentangle pp-neutrino spectrum from the background components. A comparison of the total neutrino flux from the Sun with Solar luminosity in photons provides a test of the stability of the Sun on the 10$^{5}$ years time scale, and sets a strong limit on the power production in the unknown energy sources in the Sun of no more than 4\% of…
The techniques researched, developed and applied towards the measurement of radioisotope concentrations at ultra-low levels in the real-time solar neutrino experiment BOREXINO at Gran Sasso are presented and illustrated with specific results of widespread interest. We report the use of low-level germanium gamma spectrometry, low-level miniaturized gas proportional counters and low background scintillation detectors developed in solar neutrino research. Each now sets records in its field. We additionally describe our techniques of radiochemical ultra-pure, few atom manipulations and extractions…
We present the most recent results from the two currently running solar neutrino experiments, Borexino at the Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy and SuperK at Kamioka mine in Japan. SuperK has released the most precise yet measurement of the 8B solar neutrino interaction rate, with a precision better than 2\%, consistent with a constant solar neutrino emission over more than a decade. Borexino has released refined measurements of all neutrinos produced in the pp fusion chain. For the first time, one single detector has measured the entire range of solar neutrinos at once. Borexino is an organic liquid scintillator detector located in the underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). It is devoted mainly to the real time spectroscopy of low energy solar neutrinos via the elastic scattering on electrons in the target mass. The data taking campaign started in 2007 and led to key measurements of 7}Be and 8B solar neutrinos as well as antineutrinos from the earth (geo-neutrinos) and from nuclear power reactors. Borexino is also a powerful tool for the study of cosmic muons that penetrate the Gran Sasso rock coverage and thereby induced signals such as neutrons…
A search for the solar neutrino effective magnetic moment has been performed using data from 1291.5 days exposure during the second phase of the Borexino experiment. No significant deviations from the expected shape of the electron recoil spectrum from solar neutrinos have been found, and a new upper limit on the effective neutrino magnetic moment of $μ_ν^{eff}$ $<$ 2.8$\cdot$10$^{-11}$ $μ_{B}$ at 90\% c.l. has been set using constraints on the sum of the solar neutrino fluxes implied by the radiochemical gallium experiments.Using the limit for the effective neutrino moment, new limits for the…
The Sun is fueled by a series of nuclear reactions that produce the energy that makes it shine. The primary reaction is the fusion of two protons into a deuteron, a positron and a neutrino. These neutrinos constitute the vast majority of neutrinos reaching Earth, providing us with key information about what goes on at the core of our star. Several experiments have now confirmed the observation of neutrino oscillations by detecting neutrinos from secondary nuclear processes in the Sun; this is the first direct spectral measurement of the neutrinos from the keystone proton-proton fusion. This ob…
