Rewriting logic is naturally concurrent: several subterms of the state term can be rewritten simultaneously. But state terms are global, which makes compositionality difficult to achieve. Compositionality here means being able to decompose a complex system into its functional components and code each as an isolated and encapsulated system. Our goal is to help bringing compositionality to system specification in rewriting logic. The base of our proposal is the operation that we call synchronous composition. We discuss the motivations and implications of our proposal, formalize it for rewriting logic and also for transition structures, to be used as semantics, and show the power of our approach with some examples. This paper is under consideration in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP).
This paper addresses the issue of specifying, simulating, and verifying reactive systems in rewriting logic. It presents an executable semantics for probabilistic, timed, and spatial concurrent constraint programming -- here called stochastic and spatial concurrent constraint systems (SSCC) -- in the rewriting logic semantic framework. The approach is based on an enhanced and generalized model of concurrent constraint programming (CCP) where computational hierarchical spaces can be assigned to belong to agents. The executable semantics faithfully represents and operationally captures the highl…
The analysis of cyber-physical systems (CPS) is challenging due to the large state space and the continuous changes occurring in their constituent parts. Design practices favor modularity to help reducing this complexity. In a previous work, we proposed a discrete semantic model for CPS that captures both cyber and physical aspects as streams of discrete observations, which ultimately form the behavior of a component. This semantic model is denotational and compositional, where each composition operator algebraically models an interaction between a pair of components. In this paper, we propose…
Probabilistic specifications are fast gaining ground as a tool for statistical modeling of probabilistic systems. One of the main goals of formal methods in this domain is to ensure that specific behavior is present or absent in the system, up to a certain confidence threshold, regardless of the way it operates amid uncertain information. This paper presents a rewriting logic semantics for a probabilistic extension of Event-B, a proof-based formal method for discrete systems modeling. The proposed semantics adequately captures the three sources of probabilistic behavior, namely, probabilistic …
Reactive synthesis automatically derives a strategy that satisfies a given specification. However, requiring a strategy to meet the specification in every situation is, in many cases, too hard of a requirement. Particularly in compositional synthesis of distributed systems, individual winning strategies for the processes often do not exist. Remorsefree dominance, a weaker notion than winning, accounts for such situations: dominant strategies are only required to be as good as any alternative strategy, i.e., they are allowed to violate the specification if no other strategy would have satisfied…
Automatic and efficient verification of multiplier designs, especially through a provably correct method, is a difficult problem. We show how to utilize a theorem prover, ACL2, to implement an efficient rewriting algorithm for multiplier design verification. Through a basic understanding of the features and data structures of ACL2, we created a verified program that can automatically verify various multiplier designs much faster than the other state-of-the-art tools. Additionally, users of our system have the flexibility to change the specification for the target design to verify variations of…
We introduce a transition system based specification of cyber-physical systems whose semantics is compositional with respect to a family of algebraic products. We give sufficient conditions for execution of a product to be correctly implemented by a lazy expansion of the product construction. The transition system algebra is implemented in the Maude rewriting logic system, and we report a simple case study illustrating compositional specification.
We present TaDA Live, a concurrent separation logic for reasoning compositionally about the termination of blocking fine-grained concurrent programs. The crucial challenge is how to deal with abstract atomic blocking: that is, abstract atomic operations that have blocking behaviour arising from busy-waiting patterns as found in, for example, fine-grained spin locks. Our fundamental innovation is with the design of abstract specifications that capture this blocking behaviour as liveness assumptions on the environment. We design a logic that can reason about the termination of clients which use …
Compositional synthesis relies on the discovery of assumptions, i.e., restrictions on the behavior of the remainder of the system that allow a component to realize its specification. In order to avoid losing valid solutions, these assumptions should be necessary conditions for realizability. However, because there are typically many different behaviors that realize the same specification, necessary behavioral restrictions often do not exist. In this paper, we introduce a new class of assumptions for compositional synthesis, which we call information flow assumptions. Such assumptions capture a…
Derived datasets can be defined implicitly or explicitly. An implicit definition (of dataset $O$ in terms of datasets $\vec{I}$) is a logical specification involving the source data $\vec{I}$ and the interface data $O$. It is a valid definition of $O$ in terms of $\vec{I}$, if any two models of the specification agreeing on $\vec{I}$ agree on $O$. In contrast, an explicit definition is a query that produces $O$ from $\vec{I}$. Variants of Beth's theorem state that one can convert implicit definitions to explicit ones. Further, this conversion can be done effectively given a proof witnessing im…
Component-based design paradigm is of paramount importance due to prolific growth in the complexity of modern-day systems. Since the components are developed primarily by multi-party vendors and often assembled to realize the overall system, it is an onus of the designer to certify both the functional and non-functional requirements of such systems. Several of the earlier works concentrated on formally analyzing the behavioral correctness, safety, security, reliability and robustness of such compositional systems. However, the assurance for quality measures of such systems is also considered a…
