We report observations of electromagnetic electron holes (EHs). We use multi-spacecraft analysis to quantify the magnetic field contributions of three mechanisms: the Lorentz transform, electron drift within the EH, and Cherenkov emission of whistler waves. The first two mechanisms account for the observed magnetic fields for slower EHs, while for EHs with speeds approaching half the electron Alfvén speed, whistler waves excited via the Cherenkov mechanism dominate the perpendicular magnetic field. The excited whistlers are kinetically damped and typically confined within the EHs.
We present waveform observations of electromagnetic lower hybrid and whistler waves with f_ci << f < f_ce downstream of four supercritical interplanetary (IP) shocks using the Wind search coil magnetometer. The whistler waves were observed to have a weak positive correlation between \partialB and normalized heat flux magnitude and an inverse correlation with T_eh/T_ec. All were observed simultaneous with electron distributions satisfying the whistler heat flux instability threshold and most with T_{perp,h}/T_{para,h} > 1.01. Thus, the whistler mode waves appear to be driven by a heat flux inst…
Whistler mode wave is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves are a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyse data with the high time resolution from the multi-scale magnetospheric spacecraft in the weak magnetic environment (i.e., foreshock) enabling a relatively long gyro-period of whistler mode wave. Moreover, we develop a novel approach to separa…
We investigate the attenuation of whistler waves generated by hypotetical venusian lightning occurring at the altitude of the cloud layer under different ionospheric conditions. We use the Stanford Full Wave Method (FWM) for stratified media of \cite{Lehtinen2008/JGR} to model wave propagation through the ionosphere of Venus. This method calculates the electromagnetic field created by an arbitrary source in a plane-stratified medium (i.e. uniform in the horizontal direction). We see that the existence of holes in electronic densities and the magnetic field configuration caused by solar wind pl…
We report on the nonlinear turbulent processes associated with electromagnetic waves in plasmas. We focus on low-frequency (in comparison with the electron gyrofrequency) nonlinearly interacting electron whistlers and nonlinearly interacting Hall-magnetohydrodynamic (H-MHD) fluctuations in a magnetized plasma.
Whistler Wave Observations by \textit{Parker Solar Probe} During Encounter $1$: Counter-Propagating Whistlers Collocated with Magnetic Field Inhomogeneities and their Application to Electric Field Measurement Calibration
Efficient energy transfer from electromagnetic waves to ions has been demanded to control laboratory plasmas for various applications and could be useful to understand the nature of space and astrophysical plasmas. However, there exists a severe unsolved problem that most of the wave energy is converted quickly to electrons, but not to ions. Here, an energy conversion process to ions in overdense plasmas associated with whistler waves is investigated by numerical simulations and theoretical model. Whistler waves propagating along a magnetic field in space and laboratories often form the standi…
The observed sub-proton scale turbulence spectrum in the solar wind raises the question of how that turbulence originates. Observations of keV energetic electrons during solar quite-time suggest them as possible source of free energy to drive the turbulence. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we explore how free energy in energetic electrons, released by an electron two-stream instability drives Weibel-like electromagnetic waves that excite wave-wave interactions. Consequently, both kinetic Alfvénic and whistler waves are excited that evolve through inverse and forward magnetic energy cascade…
Thermalization and heating of plasma flows at shocks result in unstable charged-particle distributions which generate a wide range of electromagnetic waves. These waves, in turn, can further accelerate and scatter energetic particles. Thus, the properties of the waves and their implication for wave-particle interactions are critically important for modeling energetic particle dynamics in shock environments. Whistler-mode waves, excited by the electron heat flux or a temperature anisotropy, arise naturally near shocks and foreshock transients. As a result, they can often interact with supra-the…
The goal of our study is to detect and characterize the electromagnetic waves that can modify the electron distribution functions, with a special attention to whistler waves. We analyse in details the electric and magnetic field fluctuations observed by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft during its first orbit around the Sun between 0.5 and 1 AU. Using data of the Search Coil Magnetometer and electric antenna, both parts of the Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) instrumental suite, we detect the electromagnetic waves with frequencies above 3 Hz and determine the statistical distribution of their amplitude…
In space plasmas kinetic instabilities are driven by the beaming (drifting) components and/or the temperature anisotropy of charged particles. The heat-flux instabilities are known in the literature as electromagnetic modes destabilized by the electron beams (or strahls) aligned to the interplanetary magnetic field. A new kinetic approach is proposed here in order to provide a realistic characterization of heat-flux instabilities under the influence of electrons with temperature anisotropy. Numerical analysis is based on the kinetic Vlasov-Maxwell theory for two electron counter-streaming (cor…
Electron velocity distributions in the solar wind are known to have field-aligned skewness, which has been characterized by the presence of secondary populations such as the halo and strahl. Skewness may provide energy for the excitation of electromagnetic instabilities, such as the whistler heat-flux instability (WHFI), that may play an important role in regulating the electron heat-flux in the solar wind. Here we use kinetic theory to analyze the stability of the WHFI in a solar-wind-like plasma where solar wind core, halo and strahl electrons are described as a superposition of two distribu…
We present the first quantified measure of the rate of energy dissipated per unit volume by high frequency electromagnetic waves in the transition region of the Earth's collisionless bow shock using data from the THEMIS spacecraft. Every THEMIS shock crossing examined with available wave burst data showed both low frequency (< 10 Hz) magnetosonic-whistler waves and high frequency (> 10 Hz) electromagnetic and electrostatic waves throughout the entire transition region and into the magnetosheath. The waves in both frequency ranges had large amplitudes, but the higher frequency waves, which are …
Reconstruction of Polarization Properties of Whistler Waves From Two Magnetic and Two Electric Field Components: Application to Parker Solar Probe Measurements
Solar wind electrons play an important role in the energy balance of the solar wind acceleration by carrying energy into interplanetary space in the form of electron heat flux. The heat flux is stored in the complex electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs) shaped by expansion, Coulomb collisions, and field-particle interactions. We investigate how the suprathermal electron deficit in the anti-strahl direction, which was recently discovered in the near-Sun solar wind, drives a kinetic instability and creates whistler waves with wave vectors that are quasi-parallel to the direction of the…
Resonances with electromagnetic whistler-mode waves are the primary driver for the formation and dynamics of energetic electron fluxes in various space plasma systems, including shock waves and planetary radiation belts. The basic and most elaborated theoretical framework for the description of the integral effect of multiple resonant interactions is the quasi-linear theory, that operates through electron diffusion in velocity space. The quasi-linear diffusion rate scales linearly with the wave intensity, D(QL) is proportional to Bw2, which should be small enough to satisfy the applicability c…
There is wide observational evidence that electron velocity distribution functions (eVDF) observed in the solar wind generally present enhanced tails and field-aligned skewness. These properties may induce the excitation of electromagnetic perturbations through the whistler heat-flux instability (WHFI), that may contribute to a non-collisional regulation of the electron heat-flux values observed in the solar wind via wave-particle interactions. Recently, a new way to model the solar wind eVDF has been proposed: the core-strahlo model. This representation consist in a bi-Maxwellian core plus a …
It is demonstrated that in high temperature collisionless plasmas the propagation of high-frequency electromagnetic waves is naturally subject to a classical Higgs mechanism which in some cases generates a very small though finite mass on the otherwise massless photons. Though this has no further obvious consequence for any plasma processes, it is very satisfactory because it explains the retardation and cut-off of electromagnetic waves when encountering plasmas. Interestingly, low frequency electromagnetic plasma waves (Alfvén waves and whistlers) remain carried by confined massless photons. …
By employing a local two-fluid theory, we investigate an obliquely propagating electromagnetic instability in the lower hybrid frequency range driven by cross-field current or relative drifts between electrons and ions. The theory self-consistently takes into account local cross-field current and accompanying pressure gradients. It is found that the instability is caused by reactive coupling between the backward propagating whistler (fast) waves in the moving electron frame and the forward propagating sound (slow) waves in the ion frame when the relative drifts are large. The unstable waves we…
