We give a brief review of beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) extensions of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector. Going from very simple to more complicated models, our survey includes models with additional scalar singlet fields, the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) and the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We discuss the impact of current experimental results from LHC Higgs searches and measurements and the prospective reach of the LHC in the high-luminosity (HL) phase. We furthermore highlight possible new collider signatures within these models that have not been experimentally probed to date.
This article summarizes a talk given at Higgs Hunting 2014 on projections of the sensitivity of the ATLAS and CMS experiments to beyond Standard Model Higgs physics at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. We describe results on vector boson scattering, searches for additional neutral Higgs bosons in two Higgs doublet models and flavour changing neutral current top decays.
The search for evidence of beyond Standard Model Higgs bosons is an integral part of the Higgs boson studies at the LHC. This article reviews recent beyond Standard Model Higgs boson searches using Run I LHC proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector. In particular, searches for Higgs boson cascades, double Higgs boson production, scalar particles decaying to $γγ$ pairs, flavor changing neutral currents involving Higgs bosons, and Higgs bosons decaying to invisible particles are discussed. No significant deviations from the background expectations are found and corresponding c…
Charged Higgs boson can exist in many physics beyond the standard models (BSM) and it is the obvious BSM signal. We briefly describe why the 125GeV scalar discovered at the LHC must have (heavy) companion: the charged Higgs boson, in a new paradigm. We then focus on the charged Higgs phenomenology, especially on how to measure $\tanβ$ precisely utilizing the top quark polarization information.
The discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC opened up a new possibility to obtain a precise understanding of the origin of mass and the structure of the vacuum. Several theories beyond the Standard Model predict an extended Higgs sector, with additional scalar particles. We outline the complementary search possibilities for these beyond Standard Model Higgs bosons at the LHC and at possible future high-energy collider facilities.
Recent LHC highlights of searches for Higgs bosons beyond the Standard Model are presented. The results by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations are based on 2011 and 2012 proton-proton collision data at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. They test a wide range of theoretical models.
The present status of ATLAS searches for Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model (SM) is presented. This includes searches for the Higgs bosons of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM), the Minimal Supersymmetric Model (MSSM), the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model (NMSSM) and models with an invisibly decaying Higgs boson. A review of the phenomenology of the Higgs sectors of these models is given together with the search strategy and the resulting experimental constraints.
While the existence of a Higgs boson with a mass near 125 GeV has been clearly established, the detailed structure of the entire Higgs sector is yet unclear. Besides the Standard Model interpretation, various possibilities for extended Higgs sectors are being considered. The minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) features two Higgs doublets resulting in five physical Higgs bosons, which are subject to direct searches. Alternatively, more generic Two-Higgs Doublet models (2HDM) are used for the interpretation of results. The Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model (NMSSM) has a more complex Higgs…
These lectures start with a detailed pedagogical introduction to electroweak symmetry breaking in the Standard Model, including gauge boson and fermion mass generation and the resulting predictions for Higgs boson interactions. I then survey Higgs boson decays and production mechanisms at hadron and $e^+e^-$ colliders. I finish with two case studies of Higgs physics beyond the Standard Model: two-Higgs-doublet models, which I use to illustrate the concept of minimal flavor violation, and models with isospin-triplet scalar(s), which I use to illustrate the concept of custodial symmetry.
We study the Higgs sector of supersymmetric models containing two Higgs doublets with a light MSSM-like CP odd Higgs, $m_A \lesssim 10$ GeV, and $\tan β\lesssim 2.5$. In this scenario all of the Higgses resulting from two Higgs doublets: light and heavy CP even Higgses, $h$ and $H$, the CP odd Higgs, $A$, and the charged Higgs, $H^\pm$, could have been produced at LEP or the Tevatron, but would have escaped detection because they decay in modes that have not been searched for or the experiments are not sensitive to. Especially $H \to ZA$ and $H^\pm \to W^{\pm \star} A$ with $A \to c \bar c, τ^…
The non-minimal Higgs-gravity coupling, $ξH^\dagger H R$, can play an interesting role in particle physics. We utilize the available LHC Run-2 data to obtain the bound on the coupling $ξ$ and discuss the prospects of constraining it at CEPC, FCC-ee and ILC. Also, we investigate its implication on the naturalness.
In this paper we consider signal-background interference effects in Higgs-mediated diphoton production at the LHC. After reviewing earlier works that show how to use these effects to constrain the Higgs boson total decay width, we provide predictions beyond NLO accuracy for the interference and related observables, and study the impact of QCD radiative corrections on the Higgs width determination. In particular, we use the so-called soft-virtual approximation to estimate interference effects at NNLO in QCD. The inclusion of these effects reduce the NNLO prediction for the total Higgs cross-sec…
In extended Higgs models, the Higgs boson may decay into a pair of light CP-odd scalars, with distinctive collider signatures. We study the ensuing Higgs signals at the upgraded Tevatron, considering the subsequent decays of the scalars into pairs of gluons or photons. For CP-odd scalars lighter than a few GeV, the Higgs boson manifests itself as a diphoton resonance and can be discovered up to masses of a few hundred GeV. For heavier CP-odd scalars the reach extends at most up to $M_h\sim 120$ GeV. We also discuss the capabilities of the LHC and lepton colliders in these channels.
We consider the momentum-dependent effects in Higgs couplings generated by physics beyond the standard model. We take a model-dependent approach, in which we can fully compute the non-local effects from physics not directly reachable by the LHC energy. We consider several scenarios, including composite Higgs models, additional scalars, and the continuum contributions of a quasi-conformal sector, as examples. For each specific model, we are able to obtain the form factor, with which it is then possible to fully simulate the effects in kinematics distributions. The momentum-dependent effects app…
We present an extension to the Mathematica package SARAH which allows for Higgs mass calculations at the two-loop level in a wide range of supersymmetric models beyond the MSSM. These calculations are based on the effective potential approach and include all two-loop corrections which are independent of electroweak gauge couplings. For the numerical evaluation Fortran code for SPheno is generated by SARAH. This allows the prediction of the Higgs mass in more complicated SUSY models with the same precision that most state-of-the-art spectrum generators provide for the MSSM.
Recent results from the Tevatron are reported on Higgs boson searches in models beyond the standard model (SM). The models include fermiophobic Higgs bosons, the extension of the SM to a fourth generation of fermions, supersymmetric scenarios and heavy Higgs boson cascade decays.
We make an updated review and a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the decays of Higgs bosons in the Standard Model (SM) and its three well-defined prototype extensions such as the complex singlet extension of the SM (cxSM), the four types of two Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs) without tree-level Higgs-mediated flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) and the minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM (MSSM). We summarize the theoretical predictions for the decay widths of the SM Higgs boson and those of Higgs bosons appearing in its extensions taking account of all possible decay modes. We i…
This is a compact overview of Higgs sectors in extensions of the MSSM. The focus is on the summary of the main features of models with additional singlets and triplets as well as of models with Dirac gauginos. In addition, also important aspects of models with an extended gauge sector are shown. Finally, I comment on available tools which can be used for an adequate study of non-minimal SUSY models.
The main Higgs production channel at hadron colliders is gluon fusion via heavy-quark loops. We present the results of a fully exclusive simulation of gluon fusion Higgs production based on the matrix elements for h + 0, 1, 2 partons including full heavy-quark loop dependence, matched to a parton shower. We consider a Higgs with standard model couplings as well as models where the Higgs has enhanced couplings to bottom quarks (b-philic). We study the most relevant kinematic distributions, such as jet and Higgs pT spectra and find that matched samples provide an accurate description of the fina…
The discovered Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV exhibits properties which are all in agreement with Standard Model predictions. However, the corresponding measurements still allow for a considerable non-Standard Model behavior of the h(125). Beyond Standard Model properties can show up in non-Standard Model decays of the h(125) or in anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson. This article presents four different analyses done at the CMS experiment with 2012 and 2016 data that search for properties of the discovered Higgs boson beyond the Standard Model. These include a search for lepton flavor …
In these proceedings I cover the latest results on the production and decay of the recently discovered Higgs boson. While the spin and properties of the new boson, such as its mass and couplings to bosons and fermions, are covered in a separate report, I focus on individual results in the main channels we use to study the properties of the new boson and to search for its possible cousins, with the focus on the latest results from the LHC and the Tevatron collaborations.
We present threshold enhanced QCD corrections to rapidity distributions of di-leptons in the Drell-Yan process and of Higgs particles in both gluon fusion and bottom quark annihilation processes using Sudakov resummed cross sections. We have used renormalisation group invariance and the mass factorisation theorem that these hard scattering cross sections satisfy as well as Sudakov resummation of QCD amplitudes. We find that these higher order threshold QCD corrections stabilise the theoretical predictions under scale variations.
We study angular observables in the $e^+e^-\to Z H\to \ell^+ \ell^-\,b\bar{b}$ channel at future circular $e^+ e^-$ colliders such as CEPC and FCC-ee. Taking into account the impact of realistic cut acceptance and detector effects, we forecast the precision of six angular asymmetries at CEPC (FCC-ee) with center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} =$ 240 GeV and 5 (30) ${\rm ab}^{-1}$ integrated luminosity. We then determine the projected sensitivity to a range of operators relevant for the Higgs-strahlung process in the dimension-6 Higgs EFT. Our results show that angular observables provide complementa…
We study in a bottom-up approach the theoretically consistent description of additional resonances in the electroweak sector beyond the discovered Higgs boson as simplified models. We focus on scalar and tensor resonances. Our formalism is suited for strongly coupled models, but can also be applied to weakly interacting theories. The spurious degrees of freedom of tensor resonances that would lead to bad high-energy behavior are treated using a generalization of the Stuckelberg formalism. We calculate scattering amplitudes for vector-boson and Higgs boson pairs. The high-energy region is regul…
Recent developments in prospects of searching for Higgs particles and testing their properties at the LHC and at TeV e+e- linear colliders are summarized. The discovery limits of supersymmetric particles at the LHC are presented and the accuracy is explored with which the fundamental SUSY parameters in the context of supergravity models can be determined at high-luminosity linear colliders. Finally, new discovery limits for gauge bosons in left-right symmetric models at the LHC are presented.
In this talk I discuss the status and future prospects of testing the Higgs self-couplings at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) as well as several Beyond Standard Model (BSM) scenarios that could be probed via Higgs pair production in the coming years.
One-loop electroweak corrections to the annihilation cross-sections of dark matter in the Higgs resonance region of the inert doublet model (IDM) are investigated. The procedure of how to implement the width of the Higgs in order to regularise the amplitude both at tree-level and at one-loop together with the renormalisation of a key parameter of the model, are thoroughly scrutinised. The discussions go beyond the application to the relic density calculation and also beyond the IDM so that addressing these technical issues can help in a wider context. We look in particular at the dominant chan…
In this talk, I will discuss possible new physics effects that modify the interaction of Higgs boson(s) with top and bottom quarks, and discuss how to detect such effects in current and future high energy colliders.
It is shown that the inherent quadratic divergence of the Higgs mass renormalization of the standard model may be avoided in the well-studied scotogenic model of radiative neutrino mass as well as other analogous extensions.
After the discovery of the Higgs boson particle on the 4th of July of 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider, sited at the european CERN laboratory, we are entering in a fascinating period for Particle Physics where both theorists and experimentalists are devoted to fully understand the features of this new particle and the possible consequences for High Energy Physics of the Higgs system both within and beyond the Standard Model of fundamental particle interactions. This paper is a summary of the lectures given at the third IDPASC school (Santiago de Compostela, Feb. 2013, Spain) addressed to PhD …
We present a calculation of the loop-induced processes gg -> HH and gg -> HHH, and investigate the observability of multi-Higgs boson production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. While the SM cross sections are too small to allow observation at the LHC, we demonstrate that physics beyond the SM can lead to amplified, observable cross sections. Furthermore, the applicability of the heavy top quark approximation in two- and three-Higgs boson production is investigated. We conclude that multi-Higgs boson production at the SuperLHC is an interesting pro…
The study of the Higgs couplings following its discovery is the priority of future LHC runs. A hint of anomalous nature will be exhibited via its coupling to the Standard Model(SM) particles and open up new domain of phenomenological study of physics beyond the Standard Model. The enhanced statistics from next LHC runs will enable entry into the precision era to study the properties of Higgs with greater details. In this paper we present how one can extract Higgs couplings in future LHC runs at 14 TeV via $H \rightarrow Z Z^* \rightarrow 4 \ell$, using observables constructed from angular dist…
Detection of a signal in one of the standard LHC Higgs search channels does not guarantee that the particle discovered is the Standard Model (SM) Higgs. In this talk I survey some general classes of alternatives and ways to tell them apart.
These lecture notes review the theoretical background to the Higgs boson, provide an introduction to its phenomenology, and describe the experimental tests that lead us to think that "beyond any reasonable doubt, it is a Higgs boson". Motivations for expecting new physics beyond the Standard Model are recalled, and the Standard Model effective field theory is advocated as a tool to help search for it. The phenomenology of $N = 1$ and $N = 2$ supersymmetric Higgs bosons is reviewed, and the prospects for possible future Higgs factories are previewed.
We review activities in the field of theoretical, phenomenological and experimental studies related to the production of the Higgs boson in central exclusive processes at LHC in models beyond Standard Model. Prospects in the context of the Higgs boson discovery at LHC in 2012 and of proposals to build forward proton detectors at ATLAS and CMS side are summarized.
Latest results from the combined data of the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL on Higgs boson searches in extensions of the Standard Model (SM) are presented.
In this thesis, we discuss theoretical properties of various Higgs sectors, and we analyze constraints from current experimental data, and then we study collider signatures in each Higgs sector. In Part I, we focus on the phenomenology of various extended Higgs sectors such as the two Higgs doublet model, the Higgs triplet model and Higgs sectors in supersymmetric standard models. In Part II, we discuss new physics models at the TeV scale, in which the Higgs sector is extended, and neutrino masses, dark matter and/or baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be explained.
In this contribution a brief review about the status of higher order corrections to Higgs boson production within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is given. Furthermore the first activities towards third-order corrections in the Standard Model (SM) are discussed.
Extensive searches for Higgs bosons and other new phenomena predicted by extensions of the Standard Model have been performed at LEP. A summary is given reviewing the principal aspects and presenting a selection of results.
Exotic decays of the Standard Model-like Higgs boson into beyond-the-Standard Model particles are predicted in a wide range of well-motivated theories. The enormous samples of Higgs bosons that have been and will be produced at the Large Hadron Collider thus constitute one of the key discovery opportunities at that facility, particularly in the upcoming high-statistics high-luminosity run. Here we review recent theoretical work on models that predict or accommodate exotic Higgs decays, the status of current experimental searches, and look forward to future capabilities at dedicated Higgs facto…
Some possibilities to test the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at the LHC and future $e^+e^-$ colliders are discussed. This includes precision coupling strength measurements, the search for additional Higgs bosons as well as their decay to supersymmetric particles.
If electroweak symmetry breaking arises via strong dynamics, electroweak precision tests and flavour physics experiments suggest that the minimal model should closely resemble the Standard Model at the LHC. I describe two directions going beyond the minimal model that result in radically different physics at the LHC. One direction extends the Higgs sector and the other involves composite leptoquark states.
The ongoing searches for Higgs-boson signals in data taken at the CERN LHC and the Fermilab Tevatron crucially rely on the decay channels H -> Z l l and H -> W l nu. We present a precision study of the partial widths of these decay channels including the full one-loop electroweak corrections and the dominant contributions at two and three loops, of O(G_F^2 m_t^4), O(G_F m_t^2 alpha_s), and O(G_F m_t^2 alpha_s^2). Since the invariant mass of the off-shell intermediate boson is relatively low in the mass window 115 GeV < m_H < 129 GeV of current interest, lepton mass effects are relevant, especi…
The new particle recently discovered at the Large Hadron Collider has properties compatible with those expected for the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson. However, this does not exclude the possibility that the discovered state is of non-standard origin, as part of an elementary Higgs sector in an extended model, or not at all a fundamental Higgs scalar. We review briefly the motivations for Higgs boson scenarios beyond the SM, discuss the phenomenology of several examples, and summarize the prospects and methods for studying interesting models with non-standard Higgs sectors using current and f…
We evaluate dominant two-loop corrections to the triple Higgs coupling and strength of a first-order electroweak phase transition in the inert Higgs doublet model. It is found that sunset diagrams can predominantly enhance the former and reduce the latter. As a result, the triple Higgs coupling normalized by the standard model value at two-loop level is more enhanced than the corresponding one-loop value.
We examine the interplay between Higgs mediation of dark matter annihilation and scattering on one hand, and the invisible Higgs decay width on the other, in a generic class of models utilizing the Higgs portal. We find that, while the invisible width of the Higgs to dark matter is now constrained for a minimal singlet scalar WIMP by experiments such as XENON100, this conclusion is not robust within more generic examples of Higgs mediation. We present a survey of simple WIMP scenarios with m_{DM} < m_h/2 and Higgs portal mediation, where direct detection signatures are suppressed, while the Hi…
The production of pairs of Higgs bosons at hadron colliders provides unique information on the Higgs sector and on the mechanism underlying electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). Most studies have concentrated on the gluon fusion production mode which has the largest cross section. However, despite its small production rate, the vector-boson fusion channel can also be relevant since even small modifications of the Higgs couplings to vector bosons induce a striking increase of the cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the Higgs boson pair. In this work, we exploit this unique sign…
We interpret the current experimental limit on the lightest Higgs boson mass to suggest that if nature is supersymmetric, there are additional interactions beyond those of the MSSM coming from new degrees of freedom around the TeV scale. Within an effective field theory analysis, the leading order corrections to the MSSM are described in terms of only two operators. This provides a highly constrained description of Beyond MSSM (BMSSM) physics. The scalar Higgs spectrum as well as the chargino and neutralino spectrum and couplings are modified in a distinctive way. These operators can be genera…
A study of two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDM) in the decoupling limit reveals the existence of parameter configurations with a large triple-Higgs self-coupling as the only low-energy trace of a departure from a Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector. This observation encourages attempts to search for double Higgs production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its luminosity upgrade (SLHC) even in mass regions which have been shown to be very hard to probe in the context of SM-like Higgs self-couplings. In a scenario where only an Intermediate Mass Higgs (IMH) boson, with 120 GeV <= m_h <= 140 GeV, i…
Higgs physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) is presented in the context of an underlying strong dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) as given by composite Higgs models. Subsequently, the study of New Physics (NP) effects in a more model-independent way through the effective Lagrangian approach is briefly sketched before moving on to the investigation of NP through Higgs coupling measurements. Depending on the precision on the extracted couplings, NP scales up to the TeV range can be probed at the high-luminosity option of the LHC, if the coupling deviations arise from mixing effec…
One Higgs was found. Are there more? In this work we discuss simple extension of the scalar sector of the Standard Model (SM) used as benchmark models by ATLAS and CMS in the searches for new scalars at the LHC. We discuss how much the discovered 125 GeV Higgs at the LHC resembles the SM Higgs and how will our understanding of the Higgs nature improve at future electron-positron colliders. Models with extended Higgs sectors provide very interesting scenarios, from the existence of charged Higgs bosons to CP-violating scalars that can be probed by the experimental collaborations at the LHC. Com…
We consider the H to gamma gamma decay process and the gluon fusion production of a light Higgs, and provide a general framework for testing models of new physics beyond the Standard Model. We apply our parametrisation to typical models extending the Standard Model in 4 and 5 dimensions, and show how the parametrisation can be used to discriminate between different scenarios of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider and at future Linear Colliders.
The Higgs boson physics reach of the CMS detector with 300(0) fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 14 TeV is presented. Precision measurements of the Higgs boson properties, Higgs boson pair production and self-coupling, rare Higgs boson decays, and the potential for additional Higgs bosons are discussed.
The Higgs spectrum of the minimal composite Higgs model, based on the SO(5)/SO(4) coset, consists of a unique Higgs doublet whose phenomenology does not differ greatly from the Standard Model (SM). Nevertheless, extensions beyond this minimal coset structure exhibit a richer Higgs spectrum and therefore very different Higgs physics. We explore one of these extensions, the SO(6)/SO(5) model, whose Higgs spectrum contains a CP-odd singlet scalar, eta, in addition to the Higgs doublet. Due to the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone nature of these Higgs bosons, their physical properties can be derived from sy…
The BaBar, Belle, and LHCb collaborations have reported evidence for new physics in $B\to Dτν$ and $B\to D^*τν$ of approximately $3.8σ$. There is also the long lasting discrepancy of about $3σ$ in the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and the branching ratio for $τ\toμνν$ is $1.8σ$ ($2.4σ$) above the Standard Model expectation using the HFAG (PDG) values. Furthermore, CMS found hints for a non-zero decay rate of $h\toμτ$. Interestingly, all these observations can be explained by introducing new scalars. In this article we consider these processes within a lepton-specific two-Higgs doublet…
