The heavy elements (Z>30) are created in neutron-capture processes which happen at very different nucleosynthetic sites. To study them in an environment different from the Milky Way, we target these elements in RGB stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Using ESO VLT/FLAMES spectra, we measure the chemical abundances of Y, Ba, La, Nd, and Eu, in 98 stars covering $-2.4<\text{[Fe/H]}<-0.9$. This is the first paper in a series about the $n$-capture elements in dwarf galaxies, and here we focus on the relative and absolute timescales of the slow ($s$)- and rapid ($r$)-processes in Sculptor. From the abundances of the $s$-process element Ba and the $r$-process element Eu, it is clear that the $r$-process enrichment occurred throughout the entire chemical evolution history of Sculptor. Furthermore, there is no evidence for the $r$-process to have a significant time delay relative to core-collapse supernovae. Neutron star mergers are therefore unlikely the dominant (or only) nucleosynthetic site of the $r$-process. However, the products of the $s$-process only become apparent at $\text{[Fe/H]}\approx-2$ in Sculptor, and the $s$-process becomes the dominant source of Ba at $\text{[Fe/H]}\gtrsim-2$. We test the use of [Y/Mg] and [Ba/Mg] as chemical clocks in Sculptor. Similarly to what is observed in the Milky Way, [Y/Mg] and [Ba/Mg] increase towards younger ages. However, there is an offset, where the abundance ratios of [Y/Mg] in Sculptor are significantly lower than those of the Milky Way at any given age. This is most likely caused by metallicity dependence of yields from the $s$-process, as well as different relative contribution of the $s$-process to core-collapse supernovae in these galaxies. Comparisons of our data with that of the Milky Way and the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy furthermore show that these chemical clocks are both metallicity and environment dependent.
Winds are predicted to be ubiquitous in low-mass, actively star-forming galaxies. Observationally, winds have been detected in relatively few local dwarf galaxies, with even fewer constraints placed on their timescales. Here, we compare galactic outflows traced by diffuse, soft X-ray emission from Chandra Space Telescope archival observations to the star formation histories derived from Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the resolved stellar populations in six starburst dwarfs. We constrain the longevity of a wind to have an upper limit of 25 Myr based on galaxies whose starburst activity has a…
Observations of the low-mass satellites in the Local Group have shown high fractions of gas-poor, quiescent galaxies relative to isolated dwarfs, implying that the host halo environment plays an important role in the quenching of dwarf galaxies. In this work, we present measurements of the quenched fractions and quenching timescales of dwarf satellite galaxies in the DC Justice League suite of 4 high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of Milky Way-mass halos. We show that these simulations accurately reproduce the satellite luminosity functions of observed nearby galaxies, as well as …
Stellar feedback is fundamental to the modeling of galaxy evolution as it drives turbulence and outflows in galaxies. Understanding the timescales involved are critical for constraining the impact of stellar feedback on the interstellar medium (ISM). We analyzed the resolved star formation histories along with the spatial distribution and kinematics of the atomic and ionized gas of four nearby star-forming dwarf galaxies (NGC 4068, NGC 4163, NGC 6789, UGC 9128) to determine the timescales over which stellar feedback drives turbulence. The four galaxies are within 5 Mpc and have a range of prop…
The Alessandrini A$+$ indicator is a quantitative measure of star cluster dynamical evolution based on the mass-segregation of blue straggler stars. A$+$ is defined as the integral of the cumulative distribution of blue straggler stars with the radius measured in logarithmic scale, minus a term related to the reference population used. In a companion paper I introduced a simplified model of dynamical friction and calculated the A$+$ indicator analytically. Here I show further properties of the time evolution of A$+$, focusing in particular on the physical interpretation of its time derivative …
Stellar feedback in dwarf galaxies plays a critical role in regulating star formation via galaxy-scale winds. Recent hydrodynamical zoom simulations of dwarf galaxies predict that the periodic outward flow of gas can change the gravitational potential sufficiently to cause radial migration of stars. To test the effect of bursty star formation on stellar migration, we examine star formation observables and sizes of 86 local dwarf galaxies. We find a correlation between the R-band half-light radius (R$_e$) and far-UV luminosity (L$_{FUV}$) for stellar masses below 10$^8 $ M$_{\odot}$ and a weak …
We report the most rapid rate of period change measured to date for a pulsating DA (hydrogen atmosphere) white dwarf (WD), observed in the 292.9 s mode of WD 0111+0018. The observed period change, faster than 10^{-12} s/s, exceeds by more than two orders of magnitude the expected rate from cooling alone for this class of slow and simply evolving pulsating WDs. This result indicates the presence of an additional timescale for period evolution in these pulsating objects. We also measure the rates of period change of nonlinear combination frequencies and show that they share the evolutionary char…
We determine magnesium isotopic abundances of metal poor dwarf stars from the galactic halo, to shed light on the onset of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star nucleossynthesis in the galactic halo and constrain the timescale of its formation. We observed a sample of eight new halo K dwarfs in a metallicity range of -1.9 < [Fe/H] < -0.9 and 4200 < $T_{eff}$(K) < 4950, using the HIRES spectrograph at the Keck Observatory (R~10^5 and 200 < S/N < 300). We obtain magnesium isotopic abundances by spectral synthesis on three MgH features and compare our results with galactic chemical evolution models.…
In the Local Group, nearly all of the dwarf galaxies (M_star < 10^9 M_sun) that are satellites within 300 kpc (the virial radius) of the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) have quiescent star formation and little-to-no cold gas. This contrasts strongly with comparatively isolated dwarf galaxies, which are almost all actively star-forming and gas-rich. This near dichotomy implies a rapid transformation of satellite dwarf galaxies after falling into the halos of the MW or M31. We combine the observed quiescent fractions for satellites of the MW and M31 with the infall times of satellites from th…
Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) merging in dwarf galaxies will be detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) in the mid-2030s. Previous cosmological hydrodynamic simulations have shown the prediction of massive black holes merging in dwarf galaxies, but these simulations are limited by their resolution and cannot follow black hole pairs all the way to coalescence. We calculate the delay time between black hole pairing and merger based on the properties of the black holes and their host galaxies, and use these properties to calculate gravitational wave strains for eleven diffe…
We report the discovery of an ultrafaint dwarf (UFD) galaxy, Pegasus W, located on the far side of the Milky Way-M31 system and outside the virial radius of M31. The distance to the galaxy is 915 (+60/-91) kpc, measured using the luminosity of horizontal branch (HB) stars identified in Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging. The galaxy has a half-light radius (r_h) of 100 (+11/-13) pc, M_V = -7.20 (+0.17/-0.16) mag, and a present-day stellar mass of 6.5 (+1.1/-1.4) x 10^4 Msun. We identify sources in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) that may be younger than ~500 Myr suggesting late-time star …
The abundance ratios [Y$/$Mg], [Y$/$Al], [Y$/$Si], [Y$/$Ca], and [Y$/$Ti] have been suggested as chemical clocks for solar-metallicity dwarf stars in the field as well as for giant stars in open clusters. To verify this last hypothesis, we derive these abundances ratios of 50 giant stars belonging to seven open clusters. To calculate the abundances, we analyze FEROS spectra assuming the LTE-hypothesis. We confirm that [Y$/$Mg], [Y$/$Al], [Y$/$Si], [Y$/$Ca], and [Y$/$Ti] work as chemical clocks for field dwarf stars at the local region (d $<$ 1 kpc) whereas for the field giants the [Y$/$Mg], [Y…
The duration of a starburst is a fundamental parameter affecting the evolution of galaxies yet, to date, observational constraints on the durations of starbursts are not well established. Here we study the recent star formation histories (SFHs) of three nearby dwarf galaxies to rigorously quantify the duration of their starburst events using a uniform and consistent approach. We find that the bursts range from ~200 - ~400 Myr in duration resolving the tension between the shorter timescales often derived observationally with the longer timescales derived from dynamical arguments. If these three…
The dynamical friction timescale of massive globular clusters (GCs) in the inner regions of cuspy dark haloes in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies can be much shorter than the Hubble time. This implies that a small fraction of the GCs is expected to be caught close to the centre of these galaxies. We compare the radial distribution of GCs predicted in simple Monte Carlo models with that of a sample of $38$ spectroscopically confirmed GCs plus 17 GC candidates, associated mainly to low-luminosity dSph galaxies. If dark matter haloes follow an NFW profile, the observed number of off-center GCs at…

Metal mixing plays critical roles in the enrichment of metals in galaxies. The abundance of elements such as Mg, Fe, and Ba in metal-poor stars help us understand the metal mixing in galaxies. However, the efficiency of metal mixing in galaxies is not yet understood. Here we report a series of $N$-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of dwarf galaxies with different efficiencies of metal mixing using turbulence-induced mixing model. We show that metal mixing apparently occurs in dwarf galaxies from Mg and Ba abundance. We find that the scaling factor for metal diffusion larger than…
We present optical light curves from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) for the archetypical dwarf active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the nearby galaxy NGC 4395 hosting a $\sim 10^5\,M_\odot$ supermassive black hole (SMBH). Significant variability is detected on timescales from weeks to hours before reaching the background noise level. The $\sim$month-long, 30 minute-cadence, high-precision TESS light curve can be well fit by a simple damped random walk (DRW) model, with the damping timescale $τ_{\rm DRW}$ constrained to be $2.3_{-0.7}^{+1.8}$~days ($1σ$). NGC 4395 lies almost exac…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are the smallest known stellar systems where under Newtonian interpretations, a significant amount of dark matter is required to explain observed kinematics. In fact, they are in this sense the most heavily dark matter dominated objects known. That, plus the increasingly small sizes of the newly discovered ultra faint dwarfs, puts these systems in the regime where dynamical friction on individual stars starts to become relevant. We calculate the dynamical friction timescales for pressure supported isotropic spherical dark matter dominated stellar systems, yielding $τ_…
The S stars near the Galactic centre and any pulsars that may be on similar orbits, can be modelled in a unified way as clocks orbiting a black hole, and hence are potential probes of relativistic effects, including black hole spin. The high eccentricities of many S stars mean that relativistic effects peak strongly around pericentre; for example, orbit precession is not a smooth effect but almost a kick at pericentre. We argue that concentration around pericentre will be an advantage when analysing redshift or pulse-arrival data to measure relativistic effects, because cumulative precession w…
