For a smooth, stationary, planar Gaussian field, we consider the number of connected components of its excursion set (or level set) contained in a large square of area $R^2$. The mean number of components is known to be of order $R^2$ for generic fields and all levels. We show that for certain fields with positive spectral density near the origin (including the Bargmann-Fock field), and for certain levels $\ell$, these random variables have fluctuations of order at least $R$, and hence variance of order at least $R^2$. In particular, this holds for excursion sets when $\ell$ is in some neighbourhood of zero, and it holds for excursion/level sets when $\ell$ is sufficiently large. We prove stronger fluctuation lower bounds of order $R^α$, $α\in [1,2]$, in the case that the spectral density has a singularity at the origin. Finally, we show that the number of excursion/level sets for the Random Plane Wave at certain levels has fluctuations of order at least $R^{3/2}$, and hence variance of order at least~$R^3$. We expect that these bounds are of the correct order, at least for generic levels.
The aim of this paper is to present a self-similar growth-fragmentation process linked to a Brownian excursion in the upper half-plane $\mathbb{H}$, obtained by cutting the excursion at horizontal levels. We prove that the associated growth-fragmentation is related to one of the growth-fragmentation processes introduced by Bertoin, Budd, Curien and Kortchemski.
We prove the existence of phase transitions in the global connectivity of the excursion sets of planar symmetric shot noise fields. Our main result establishes a phase transition with respect to the level for shot noise fields with symmetric log-concave mark distributions, including Gaussian, uniform, and Laplace marks, and kernels that are positive, symmetric, and have sufficient tail decay. Without the log-concavity assumption we prove a phase transition with respect to the intensity of positive marks.
Nazarov and Sodin have shown that the number of connected components of the nodal set of a planar Gaussian field in a ball of radius $R$, normalised by area, converges to a constant as $R\to \infty $. This has been generalised to excursion/level sets at arbitrary levels, implying the existence of functionals $c_{ES}(\ell )$ and $c_{LS}(\ell )$ that encode the density of excursion/level set components at the level $\ell $. We prove that these functionals are continuously differentiable for a wide class of fields. This follows from a more general result, which derives differentiability of the fu…
The Nazarov-Sodin constant describes the average number of nodal set components of Gaussian fields on large scales. We generalise this to a functional describing the corresponding number of level set components for arbitrary levels. Using results from Morse theory, we express this functional as an integral over the level densities of different types of critical points, and as a result deduce the absolute continuity of the functional as the level varies. We further give upper and lower bounds showing that the functional is at least bimodal for certain isotropic fields, including the important s…
We study properties of occupation times by Brownian excursions and Brownian loops in two-dimensional domains. This allows for instance to interpret some Gaussian fields, such as the Gaussian Free Fields as (properly normalized) fluctuations of the total occupation time of a Poisson cloud of Brownian excursions when the intensity of the cloud goes to infinity.
Area fluctuations of a Brownian excursion are described by the Airy distribution, which found applications in different areas of physics, mathematics and computer science. Here we generalize this distribution to describe the area fluctuations on a \emph{subinterval} of a Brownian excursion. In the first version of the problem (Model 1) no additional conditions are imposed. In the second version (Model 2) we study the distribution of the area fluctuations on a subinterval given the excursion area on the whole interval. Both versions admit convenient path-integral formulations. In Model 1 we obt…
Permutations that avoid given patterns are among the most classical objects in combinatorics and have strong connections to many fields of mathematics, computer science and biology. In this paper we study the scaling limits of a random permutation avoiding a pattern of length 3 and their relations to Brownian excursion. Exploring this connection to Brownian excursion allows us to strengthen the recent results of Madras and Pehlivan, and Miner and Pak as well as to understand many of the interesting phenomena that had previously gone unexplained.
It is known that after scaling a random Motzkin path converges to a Brownian excursion. We prove that the fluctuations of the counting processes of the ascent steps, the descent steps and the level steps converge jointly to linear combinations of two independent processes: a Brownian motion and a Brownian excursion. The proofs rely on the Laplace transforms and an integral representation based on an identity connecting non-crossing pair partitions and joint moments of an explicit non-homogeneous Markov process.
In this paper, a surprising connection is described between a specific brand of random lattices, namely planar quadrangulations, and Aldous' Integrated SuperBrownian Excursion (ISE). As a consequence, the radius r_n of a random quadrangulation with n faces is shown to converge, up to scaling, to the width r=R-L of the support of the one-dimensional ISE. More generally the distribution of distances to a random vertex in a random quadrangulation is described in its scaled limit by the random measure ISE shifted to set the minimum of its support in zero. The first combinatorial ingredient is an e…
We investigate the asymptotic variance of Gaussian nodal excursions in the Euclidean space, focusing on the case where the spectral measure has incommensurable atoms. This study requires to establish fine recurrence properties in 0 for the associated irrational random walk on the torus. We show in particular that the recurrence magnitude depends strongly on the diophantine properties of the atoms, and the same goes for the variance asymptotics of nodal excursions. More specifically, if the spectral measures contains atoms which ratios are well approximable by rationals, the variance is likely …
Two fundamental theorems by Spitzer/Erickson and Kesten/Maller on the fluctuation type (positive divergence, negative divergence or oscillation) of a real-valued random walk $(S_{n})_{n\ge 0}$ with iid increments $X_{1},X_{2},\ldots$ and the existence of moments of various related quantities like the first passage into $[x,\infty)$ and the last exit time from $(-\infty,x]$ for arbitrary $x\in\mathbb{R}_{\geqslant}$ are studied in the Markov-modulated situation when the $X_{n}$ are governed by a positive recurrent Markov chain $M=(M_{n})_{n\ge 0}$ on a countable state space $\mathcal{S}$, thus …
We consider the 2D delta-Bose gas by a smooth mollification of the delta potential, where the coupling constant is in the critical window. The main result proves that for two particles, the approximate semigroups on $\mathscr B_b(\Bbb R^2)$ for the Schrödinger operator with singular interaction at the origin converge pointwise in the initial condition. This convergence extends earlier functional analytic results for the convergence in the $L_2$-norm resolvent sense. The central methods introduced here apply the excursion theory of the 2D Bessel process and the ergodicity of the winding number …
We prove $\sqrt{\log n}$ lower bounds on the order of growth fluctuations in three planar growth models (first-passage percolation, last-passage percolation, and directed polymers) under no assumptions on the distribution of vertex or edge weights other than the minimum conditions required for avoiding pathologies. Such bounds were previously known only for certain restrictive classes of distributions. In addition, the first-passage shape fluctuation exponent is shown to be at least $1/8$, extending previous results to more general distributions.
We study random bipartite planar maps defined by assigning nonnegative weights to each face of a map. We prove that for certain choices of weights a unique large face, having degree proportional to the total number of edges in the maps, appears when the maps are large. It is furthermore shown that as the number of edges $n$ of the planar maps goes to infinity, the profile of distances to a marked vertex rescaled by $n^{-1/2}$ is described by a Brownian excursion. The planar maps, with the graph metric rescaled by $n^{-1/2}$, are then shown to converge in distribution toward Aldous' Brownian tr…
This paper presents some new results on Parisian ruin under Levy insurance risk process, where ruin occurs when the process has gone below a fixed level from the last record maximum, also known as the high-water mark or drawdown, for a fixed consecutive periods of time. The law of ruin-time and the position at ruin is given in terms of their joint Laplace transforms. Identities are presented semi-explicitly in terms of the scale function and the law of the Levy process. They are established using recent developments on fluctuation theory of drawdown of spectrally negative Levy process. In cont…
We consider an i.i.d. random environment with a strong form of transience on the two dimensional integer lattice. Namely, the walk always moves forward in the y-direction. We prove a functional CLT for the quenched expected position of the random walk indexed by its level crossing times. We begin with a variation of the Martingale Central Limit Theorem. The main part of the paper checks the conditions of the theorem for our problem.
Smooth random Gaussian functions play an important role in mathematical physics, a main example being the random plane wave model conjectured by Berry to give a universal description of high-energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on generic compact manifolds. Our work is motivated by questions about the geometry of such random functions, in particular relating to the structure of their nodal and level sets. We study four discretisation schemes that extract information about level sets of planar Gaussian fields. Each scheme recovers information up to a different level of precision, and each req…
In this paper, we consider isotropic and stationary real Gaussian random fields defined on $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and we investigate the asymptotic behavior, as $T\rightarrow +\infty$, of the empirical measure (excursion area) in $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ at any threshold, covering both cases when the field exhibits short and long memory, i.e. integrable and non-integrable temporal covariance. It turns out that the limiting distribution is not universal, depending both on the memory parameters and the threshold. In particular, in the long memory case a form of Berry's cancellation…
We study here the random fluctuations in the number of critical points with values in an interval $I\subset \mathbb{R}$ for Gaussian spherical eigenfunctions $\left\{f_{\ell }\right\} $, in the high energy regime where $\ell \rightarrow \infty $. We show that these fluctuations are asymptotically equivalent to the centred $L^{2}$-norm of $\left\{ f_{\ell }\right\} $ times the integral of a (simple and fully explicit) function over the interval under consideration. We discuss also the relationships between these results and the asymptotic behaviour of other geometric functionals on the excursio…
We consider a planar Brownian loop $B$ that is run for a time $T$ and conditioned on the event that its range encloses the unusually high area of $πT^2$, with $T$ being large. We study the deviation of the range of the conditioned process $X$ from a circle of radius $T$, as a model for the fluctuation of a phase boundary. This deviation is measured by means of the inradius and outradius of the region enclosed by the range of $X$. We prove that in a typical realization of the conditioned measure, each of these quantities differs from $T$ by at most $T^{2/3 + ε}$.
The dimer model on a planar bipartite graph can be viewed as a random surface measure. We study these fluctuations for a dimer model on the square grid with two different classes of weights and provide a condition for their equivalence. In the thermodynamic limit and scaling window, these height fluctuations are shown to be non-Gaussian. They are also rotationally invariant for a certain choice of weights. Finally, we show that the height difference between any two points is Gaussian for a specific choice of weights.
We study scaling limits of a family of planar random growth processes in which clusters grow by the successive aggregation of small particles. In these models, clusters are encoded as a composition of conformal maps and the location of each successive particle is distributed according to the density of harmonic measure on the cluster boundary, raised to some power. We show that, when this power lies within a particular range, the macroscopic shape of the cluster converges to a disk, but that as the power approaches the edge of this range the fluctuations approach a critical point, which is a l…
We study the fluctuations of the outer domain of Hastings-Levitov clusters in the small particle limit. These are shown to be given by a continuous Gaussian process $\mathcal{F}$ taking values in the space of holomorphic functions on $\{ |z|>1 \}$, of which we provide an explicit construction. The boundary values $\mathcal{W}$ of $\mathcal{F}$ are shown to perform an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process on the space of distributions on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$, which can be described as the solution to the stochastic fractional heat equation \[ \frac{\partial}{\partial t} \mathcal{W} (t,\vartheta ) …
We consider a planar Coulomb gas in which the external potential is generated by a smeared uniform background of opposite-sign charge on a disc. This model can be seen as a two-dimensional Wigner jellium, not necessarily charge neutral, and with particles allowed to exist beyond the support of the smeared charge. The full space integrability condition requires low enough temperature or high enough total smeared charge. This condition does not allow at the same time, total charge neutrality and determinantal structure. The model shares similarities with both the complex Ginibre ensemble and the…
We introduce the framework of discrete holomorphic functions on t-embeddings of weighted bipartite planar graphs; t-embeddings also appeared under the name Coulomb gauges in a recent paper arXiv:1810.05616. We argue that this framework is particularly relevant for the analysis of scaling limits of the height fluctuations in the corresponding dimer models. In particular, it unifies both Kenyon's interpretation of dimer observables as derivatives of harmonic functions on T-graphs and the notion of s-holomorphic functions originated in Smirnov's work on the critical Ising model. We develop an a p…
The Gaussian entire function is a random entire function, characterised by a certain invariance with respect to isometries of the plane. We study the fluctuations of the increment of the argument of the Gaussian entire function along planar curves. We introduce an inner product on finite formal linear combinations of curves (with real coefficients), that we call the signed length, which describes the limiting covariance of the increment. We also establish asymptotic normality of fluctuations.
We derive the limiting distribution of the barycenter $b_n$ of an i.i.d. sample of $n$ random points on a planar cone with angular spread larger than $2π$. There are three mutually exclusive possibilities: (i) (fully sticky case) after a finite random time the barycenter is almost surely at the origin; (ii) (partly sticky case) the limiting distribution of $\sqrt{n} b_n$ comprises a point mass at the origin, an open sector of a Gaussian, and the projection of a Gaussian to the sector's bounding rays; or (iii) (nonsticky case) the barycenter stays away from the origin and the renormalized fluct…
