The properties of neutron stars are determined by the nature of the matter that they contain. These properties can be constrained by measurements of the star's size. We obtain stringent constraints on neutron-star radii by combining multimessenger observations of the binary neutron-star merger GW170817 with nuclear theory that best accounts for density-dependent uncertainties in the equation of state. We construct equations of state constrained by chiral effective field theory and marginalize over these using the gravitational-wave observations. Combining this with the electromagnetic observations of the merger remnant that imply the presence of a short-lived hyper-massive neutron star, we find that the radius of a $1.4\,\rm{M}_\odot$ neutron star is $R_{1.4\,\mathrm{M}_\odot} = 11.0^{+0.9}_{-0.6}~{\rm km}$ (90% credible interval). Using this constraint, we show that neutron stars are unlikely to be disrupted in neutron-star black-hole mergers; subsequently, such events will not produce observable electromagnetic emission.
In this work, we consider the consequences of phase transition in dense QCD on the properties of compact stars and implications for the observational program in gravitational wave and X-ray astrophysics. The key underlying assumption of our modeling is a strong first-order phase transition past the point where the hadronic branch of compact stars reaches the two-solar mass limit. Our analysis predicts ultracompact stars with very small radii - in the range of 6-9 km - living on compact star sequences that are entirely consistent with the current multimessenger data. We show that sequences feat…
We report the results of a study aimed at inferring direct information on the repulsive three-nucleon potential $V^R_{ijk}$\textemdash driving the stiffness of the nuclear matter equation of state at supranuclear densities\textemdash from astrophysical observations. Using a Bayesian approach, we exploit the measurements of masses, radii and tidal deformabalities performed by the NICER satellite and the LIGO/Virgo collaboration, as well as the mass of the heaviest observed pulsar, to constrain the strength of $V^R_{ijk}$. The baseline of our analysis is the widely employed nuclear Hamiltonian c…
The observation by the IceCube Collaboration of a high-energy ($E \gtrsim 200$ TeV) neutrino from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 and the coincident observations of enhanced $γ$-ray emissions from the same object by MAGIC and other experiments can be used to set stringent constraints on Lorentz violation in the propagation of neutrinos that is linear in the neutrino energy: $Δv = - E/M_1$, where $Δv$ is the deviation from the velocity of light, and $M_1$ is an unknown high energy scale to be constrained by experiment. Allowing for a difference in neutrino and photon propagation times …
In this work, we consider the properties of compact stars in which quark matter has low- and high-density phases that are separated by a first-order phase transition. Thus, unlike the commonly considered case of a single phase transition from hadronic to quark matter, our models of hybrid stars contain sequential phase transitions from hadronic matter to low- and then to high-density quark matter phases. We extend our previous study of the parameter space of hybrid stars with a single phase transition to those with sequential phase transitions, taking into account the constraints on the mass a…
On August 17, 2017 the LIGO-Virgo collaboration detected for the first time gravitational waves from the binary merger of two neutron stars (GW170817). Unlike the merger of two black holes, the associated electromagnetic radiation was also detected by a host of telescopes operating over a wide range of frequencies---opening a brand new era of multimessenger astronomy. This historical detection is providing fundamental new insights into the astrophysical site for the r-process and on the nature of dense matter. In this contribution we examine the impact of GW170817 on the equation of state of n…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) recently measured the mass and equatorial radius of the isolated neutron star PSR J0030+0451. We use these measurements to infer the moment of inertia, the quadrupole moment, and the surface eccentricity of an isolated neutron star for the first time, using relations between these quantities that are insensitive to the unknown equation of state of supranuclear matter. We also use these results to forecast the moment of inertia of neutron star A in the double pulsar binary J0737-3039, a quantity anticipated to be directly measured in the co…
The need of reconciling our understanding of the behavior of hadronic matter across a wide range of densities, especially at the time when data from multimessenger observations and novel experimental facilities are flooding in, has provided new challenges to the nuclear models. Particularly, the density dependence of the isovector channel of the nuclear energy functionals seems hard to pin down if experiments like PREX-II (or PREX) and CREX are required to be taken on the same footing. We put to test this anomaly in a semi-agnostic modelling technique, by performing a full Bayesian analysis of…
While the equation of state (EOS) of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) at suprasaturation densities has been relatively well constrained from heavy-ion collisions, the EOS of high-density neutron-rich matter is still largely uncertain due to the poorly known high-density behavior of the symmetry energy. Using the constraints on the EOS of SNM at suprasaturation densities from heavy-ion collisions together with the data of finite nuclei and the existence of $2M_\odot$ neutron stars from electromagnetic (EM) observations, we show that the high-density symmetry energy cannot be too soft, which leads…
We present an ensemble of unified neutron star crust and core equations of state, constructed using an extended Skyrme energy density functional through the crust and outer core, and appended by two piecewise polytropes at higher densities. The equations of state are parameterized by the first three coefficients in the density expansion of the symmetry energy $J,L$ and $K_{\rm sym}$, the moment of inertia of a 1.338 M$_{\odot}$ star $I_{1.338}$ and the maximum neutron star mass $M_{\rm max}$. We construct an ensemble with uniform priors on all five parameters, and then apply data filters to th…
Recent rapid progress in neutron-star (NS) observations offers great potential to constrain the properties of strongly interacting matter under the most extreme conditions. In order to fully exploit the current observational inputs and to study the impact of future observations of NS masses, radii, and tidal deformabilities, we analyze a large ensemble of randomly generated viable NS-matter equations of state (EoSs) and the corresponding rotating stellar structures. We discuss the compatibility and impact of various hypotheses and measurements on the EoS, including those involving the merger p…
We introduce a family of equations of state (EoS) for hybrid neutron star (NS) matter that is obtained by a two-zone parabolic interpolation between a soft hadronic EoS at low densities and a set of stiff quark matter EoS at high densities within a finite region of chemical potentials $μ_H < μ< μ_Q$. Fixing the hadronic EoS as the APR one and choosing the color-superconducting, nonlocal NJL model with two free parameters for the quark phase, we perform Bayesian analyses with this two-parameter family of hybrid EoS. Using three different sets of observational constraints that include the mass o…
A precise moment of inertia measurement for PSR J0737-3039A in the double pulsar system is expected within the next five years. We present here a new method of mapping the anticipated measurement of the moment of inertia directly into the neutron star structure. We determine the maximum and minimum values possible for the moment of inertia of a neutron star of a given radius based on physical stability arguments, assuming knowledge of the equation of state only at densities below the nuclear saturation density. If the equation of state is trusted up to the nuclear saturation density, we find t…

Neutron stars -- compact objects with masses similar to that of our Sun but radii comparable to the size of a city -- contain the densest form of matter in the universe that can be probed in terrestrial laboratories as well as in earth- and space-based observatories. The historical detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger has opened the brand new era of multimessenger astronomy and has propelled neutron stars to the center of a variety of disciplines, such as astrophysics, general relativity, nuclear physics, and particle physics. The main input required to study the …
Hyperon ($Y$) mixing in neutron-star matter brings about a remarkable softening of the equation of state (EoS) and the maximum mass is reduced to a value far less than $2M_{\odot}$. One idea to avoid this "hyperon puzzle in neutron stars" is to assume that the many-body repulsions work universally for every kind of baryons. The other is to take into account the quark deconfinement phase transitions from a hadronic EoS to a sufficiently stiff quark-matter EoS. In the present approach, both effects are handled in a common framework. As well as the hadronic matter, the quark matter with the two-b…
We discuss masses, radii, and tidal deformabilities of neutron stars constructed from the holographic Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model. Using the same model for crust and core of the star, we combine our theoretical results with the latest astrophysical data, thus deriving more stringent constraints than given by the data alone. For instance, our calculation predicts -- independent of the model parameters -- an upper limit for the maximal mass of the star of about 2.46 solar masses and a lower limit of the (dimensionless) tidal deformability of a 1.4-solar-mass star of about 277.
What can we learn about the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$ from precise measurements of the radius ($R_{\rm{1.4}}$) and/or tidal polarizability ($Λ_{1.4}$) of canonical neutron stars (NSs) with a mass of 1.4 M$_\odot$? With the $E_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$ parameterized using three parameters $L$, $K_{\rm{sym}}$, and $J_{\rm{sym}}$ which have the asymptotic meaning of being respectively the slope, curvature, and skewness of symmetry energy at saturation density, we found that, while both the $R_{\rm{1.4}}$ and $Λ_{1.4}$ depend strongly on the slope $L$, the $K_{\rm{sym}}$…
We combine equation of state of dense matter up to twice nuclear saturation density ($n_{\rm sat}=0.16\, \text{fm}^{-3}$) obtained using chiral effective field theory ($χ$EFT), and recent observations of neutron stars to gain insights about the high-density matter encountered in their cores. A key element in our study is the recent Bayesian analysis of correlated EFT truncation errors based on order-by-order calculations up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in the $χ$EFT expansion. We refine the bounds on the maximum mass imposed by causality at high densities, and provide stringent lim…

The first detection of a binary neutron star merger has opened the brand new era of multimessenger astronomy. This historic detection has been instrumental in providing constraints on the tidal polarizability of neutron stars. In turn, the tidal polarizability has been used to impose limits on stellar radii and ultimately on the equation of state (EOS). The tidal polarizability is also sensitive to the second tidal Love number k2. It is the main purpose of this work to perform a detailed study of k2 which, for a given compactness parameter, encodes the entire sensitivity of the tidal polarizab…

We show that the neutrino chirality flip, that can take place in the core of a neutron star at birth, is an efficient process to allow neutrinos to anisotropically escape, thus providing a to induce the neutron star kick velocities. The process is not subject to the {\it no-go theorem} since although the flip from left- to right-handed neutrinos happens at equilibrium, the reverse process does not take place given that right-handed neutrinos do not interact with matter and therefore detailed balance is lost. For simplicity, we model the neutron star core as being made of strange quark matter. …
We present Chandra ACIS-S sub-array observations of the quiescent neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries X7 and X5 in the globular cluster 47 Tuc. The large reduction in photon pile-up compared to previous deep exposures enables a substantial improvement in the spectroscopic determination of the neutron star radius and mass of these neutron stars. Modeling the thermal emission from the neutron star surface with a non-magnetized hydrogen atmosphere and accounting for numerous sources of uncertainties, we obtain for the neutron star in X7 a radius of $R=11.1^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ km for an assumed stella…
X-ray spectral analysis of quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) has been one of the most common tools to measure the radius of neutron stars (NSs) for over a decade. So far, this method has been mainly applied to NSs in globular clusters, primarily because of their well-constrained distances. Here, we study Chandra data of seven transient LMXBs in the Galactic plane in quiescence to investigate the potential of constraining the radius (and mass) of the NSs inhabiting these systems. We find that only two of these objects had X-ray spectra of sufficient quality to obtain reasonable constrai…
