We introduce a novel mechanism where processes that preserve the number density of the dark sector set the relic density of a thermal particulate dark matter. In a relatively degenerate multipartite dark sector if there is a considerable time lapse between the freeze out of various species then a process like exchange between dark sector constituents can play the pivotal role of driving freeze out and setting dark matter relic density. As a proof of principle, we present simple scalar models with viable dark matter in the GeV scale to demonstrate this phenomenon.
We point out an earlier implementation of the "freeze-in" mechanism for the production of very weakly-interacting dark matter. We also clarify a footnote given in 0911.1120 regarding this eariler paper.
Using a mechanism which allows naturally small Dirac neutrino masses and its linkage to a dark gauge $U(1)_D$ symmetry, a realistic Dirac neutrino mass matrix is derived from $S_3$. The dark sector naturally contains a fermion singlet having a small seesaw mass. It is thus a good candidate for freeze-in dark matter from the decay of the $U(1)_D$ Higgs boson.
We present an extension of the Standard Model, containing a fermion dark matter candidate and two real scalar singlets, where the observed dark matter abundance is produced via freeze-out before the electroweak phase transition. We show that in this case the dark matter annihilation channels determining its freeze-out are different from those producing indirect detection signal. We present a benchmark model where the indirect annihilation cross-section differs from the freeze-out one. The model also has a gravitational wave signature due to the first order electroweak phase transition.
In this work we consider a simple model for dark matter and identify regions of parameter space where the relic abundance is set via kinematic thresholds, which open and close due to thermal effects. We discuss instantaneous freeze-out, where dark matter suddenly freezes-out when the channel connecting dark matter to the thermal bath closes, and decaying dark matter, where dark matter freezes-out while relativistic and later decays when a kinematic threshold temporarily opens. Dark matter (DM) that interacts too weakly with the Standard Model (SM) to reach full thermodynamic equilibrium can be still be created in significant amounts by rare SM collisions. This mechanism, called freeze-in, can proceed through a renormalizable connector operator with a very small coefficient, or a non-renormalizable connector operator suppressed by a large mass scale. We propose a new thermal dark matter candidate whose abundance is determined by the freezeout of inverse decays. The relic abundance depends parametrically only on a decay width, while matching the observed value requires that the coupling determining the width-and the width itself-should be exponentially small. The dark matter is therefore very weakly coupled to the Standard Model, evading conventional searches. This INverse DecaY ('INDY') dark matter can be discovered by searching for the long-lived particle that decays into the dark matter at future planned experiments.

We examine a scenario for freeze-in production of dark matter, which occurs due to the large thermal correction to the mass of a decaying mediator particle present in the thermal bath of the early Universe. We show that the decays, which are kinematically forbidden otherwise, can open up at very high temperatures and dominate the dark matter production. We explore such forbidden production of dark matter in the minimal $U(1)_{B-L}$ model, comparing dark matter phenomenology in the context of forbidden frozen-in with the standard picture.
We present a thorough analysis of the sequential freeze-in mechanism for dark matter production in the early universe. In this mechanism the dark matter relic density results from pair annihilation of mediator particles which are themselves produced by thermal collisions of standard model particles. Below some critical value of the mediator coupling to standard model fields, this sequential channel dominates over the usual freeze-in where dark matter is directly produced from thermal collisions, even when the mediator is not in thermal equilibrium. In this paper, we analyze whether freeze-in can be used to account for the dark matter in the so-called singlet fermionic model. We present a new paradigm of dark matter freeze-out, where the annihilation of dark matter particles is catalyzed. We discuss in detail the regime that the depletion of dark matter proceeds via $2χ\to 2A'$ and $3A' \to 2χ$ processes, in which $χ$ and $A'$ denote dark matter and the catalyst respectively. In this regime, the dark matter number density is depleted polynomially rather than exponentially (Boltzmann suppression) as in classic WIMPs and SIMPs. Radiative Dirac neutrino masses and their mixing are linked to dark matter through the non-Abelian discrete symmetry $A_5$ of the 4-dimensional pentatope, softly broken to $A_4$ of the 3-dimensional tetrahedron. We study the free-streaming effect in a light freeze-in dark matter model. Naturally in the dark sector one can find dark matter related coupling, and such coupling may induce dark matter self-scattering. In case that such scattering is subdominant, the dark matter partition function is not thermal but determined by the freeze-in process, yet its high momentum side is generally also Boltzmann suppressed. Dark matter (DM) interacting only gravitationally with the standard model could have been produced in the early universe by Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes (PBH). This mechanism is viable in a large range of DM mass, spanning up to the Planck scale. However, DM is also unavoidably produced by the irreducible UV gravitational freeze-in. We show that the latter mechanism sets strong bounds, excluding large regions of the parameter space favored by PBH production.
We study dark matter freeze-in scenarios where the mass of the mediator particle that couples dark matter to the Standard Model is larger than the reheat temperature, TRH, in the early Universe. In such setups, the standard approach is to work with an effective field theory (EFT) where the mediator is integrated out. We examine the validity of this approach in various generic s- and t-channel mediator frameworks. The mirror twin Higgs (MTH) addresses the little hierarchy problem by relating every Standard Model (SM) particle to a twin copy, but is in tension with cosmological bounds on light degrees of freedom. In canonical thermal DM scenarios, the DM abundance falls exponentially as the temperature drops below the mass of DM, until thermal freezeout occurs. The properties of the dark matter that determine its thermal relic abundance can be very different from the dark matter properties today. We investigate this possibility by coupling a dark matter sector to a scalar that undergoes a phase transition after the dark matter freezes out. We study the Singlet-Doublet dark matter model in the regime of feeble couplings, where the dark matter abundance is obtained via the freeze-in mechanism. As a consequence of the small couplings, the heavier particles in the model are long-lived with decay length at typical scales of collider experiments. We analyse the collider signatures of the model, characterised by displaced $h$ and $Z$ bosons plus missing momentum, employing current LHC searches for displaced vertices and missing energy to significantly constrain the parameter space of the model. In the framework of seesaw neutrino masses from heavy fermion triplets $(Σ^+,Σ^0,Σ^-)$, the addition of a light fermion singlet $N$ and a heavy scalar triplet $(ρ^+,ρ^0,ρ^-)$ has some important consequences. The new particles are assumed to be odd under a new $Z_2$ symmetry which is only broken softly, both explicitly and spontaneously. With $N-Σ^0$ mixing, freeze-in long-lived dark matter through Higgs decay becomes possible. At the same time, the $W$ mass is shifted slightly upward, as suggested by a recent precision measurement.

We study the effects of modifying the expansions history of the Universe on Dark Matter freezeout. We derived a modified Boltzmann equation for freeze-out for an arbitrary energy density in the early Universe and provide an analytic approach using some approximations. We then look at the required thermally averaged cross sections needed to obtain the correct relic density for the specific case where the energy density consists of radiation plus one extra component which cools faster. A classically scale-invariant scalar singlet can be a MeV-scale dark matter, with a feeble Higgs portal coupling at $\mathcal{O}(10^{-10})$. Besides, an $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ self-interaction coupling could further serve to alleviate the small-scale problems in the Universe. We show that, such a dark matter candidate can naturally arise in the warped extra dimension, with the huge span of parameter space predicted well within $\mathcal{O}(1)$ fundamental parameters.
We explore the possibility that dark matter is a pair of vector-like fermionic $\mathrm{SU}(2)_{\rm L}$ doublets and propose a novel mechanism of dark matter production that proceeds through the confinement of the weak sector of the Standard Model. At high energies, the dark sector is described by a gauge theory flowing towards a Banks-Zaks fixed point, coupled to the standard model via a non-renormalizable portal interaction.
