We experimentally study the dynamics of active particles (APs) in a viscoelastic fluid under various geometrical constraints such as flat walls, spherical obstacles and cylindrical cavities. We observe that the main effect of the confined viscoelastic fluid is to induce an effective repulsion on the APs when moving close to a rigid surface, which depends on the incident angle, the surface curvature and the particle activity. Additionally, the geometrical confinement imposes an asymmetry to their movement, which leads to strong hydrodynamic torques, thus resulting in detention times on the wall surface orders of magnitude shorter than suggested by thermal diffusion. We show that such viscoelasticity-mediated interactions have striking consequences on the behavior of multi-AP systems strongly confined in a circular pore. In particular, these systems exhibit a transition from liquid-like behavior to a highly ordered state upon increasing their activity. A further increase in activity melts the order, thus leading to a re-entrant liquid-like behavior.
The viscoelastic dynamics of nano-confined water is studied by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM). We observe a nonlinear viscoelastic behavior remarkably similar to that widely observed in metastable complex fluids. We show that the origin of the measured nonlinear viscoelasticity in nano-confined water is a strain rate dependent relaxation time and slow dynamics. By measuring the viscoelastic modulus at different frequencies and strains, we find that the intrinsic relaxation time of nano-confined water is in the range 0.1-0.0001 s, orders of magnitude longer than that of bulk water, and …
We study pattern formation during tensile deformation of confined viscoelastic layers. The use of a model system (PDMS with different degrees of crosslinking) allows us to go continuously from a viscous liquid to an elastic solid. We observe two distinct regimes of fingering instabilities: a regime called "elastic" with interfacial crack propagation where the fingering wavelength only scales with the film thickness, and a bulk regime called "viscoelastic" where the fingering instability shows a Saffman-Taylor-like behavior. We find good quantitative agreement with theory in both cases and pres…
The deformation and break-up of Newtonian/viscoelastic droplets are studied in confined shear flow. Our numerical approach is based on a combination of Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and finite difference schemes, the former used to model two immiscible fluids with variable viscous ratio, and the latter used to model the polymer dynamics. The kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with Peterlin's closure (FENE-P). We quantify the droplet response by changing the polymer relaxation time $τ…
The unique ability of a red blood cell to flow through extremely small microcapillaries depends on the viscoelastic properties of its membrane. Here, we study in vitro the response time upon flow startup exhibited by red blood cells confined into microchannels. We show that the characteristic transient time depends on the imposed flow strength, and that such a dependence gives access to both the effective viscosity and the elastic modulus controlling the temporal response of red cells. A simple theoretical analysis of our experimental data, validated by numerical simulations, further allows us…
We study theoretically the velocity cross-correlations of a viscous fluid confined in a slit between two viscoelastic media. We analyze the effect of these correlations on the motions of particles suspended in the fluid. The compliance of the confining boundaries gives rise to a long-ranged pair correlation, decaying only as $1/r$ with the interparticle distance $r$. We show how this long-ranged effect may be used to extract the viscoelastic properties of the confining media without embedding tracer particles in them. We discuss the remarkable robustness of such a potential technique with resp…
We propose numerical simulations of viscoelastic fluids based on a hybrid algorithm combining Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Differences (FD) schemes, the former used to model the macroscopic hydrodynamic equations, and the latter used to model the polymer dynamics. The kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbells with Peterlin's closure (FENE-P). The numerical model is first benchmarked by characterizing the rheological behaviour of dilute homogeneous solutions in various configurat…
The effects of elasticity on the break-up of liquid threads in microfluidic cross-junctions is investigated using numerical simulations based on the "lattice Boltzmann models" (LBM). Working at small Capillary numbers, we investigate the effects of non-Newtonian phases in the transition from droplet formation at the cross-junction (DCJ) and droplet formation downstream of the cross-junction (DC) (Liu & Zhang, ${\it Phys. Fluids.}$ ${\bf 23}$, 082101 (2011)). Viscoelasticity is found to influence the break-up point of the threads, which moves closer to the cross-junction and stabilizes. This is…
Intricate fluid displacement patterns, arising from the unstable growth of interfacial perturbations, can be driven by fluid viscoelasticity and surface tension. A soft glassy suspension ages, $i.e.$ its mechanical moduli evolve with time, due to the spontaneous formation of suspension microstructures. The shear and time-dependent rheology of an aging suspension can be exploited to generate a wide variety of interfacial patterns during its displacement by a Newtonian fluid. Using video imaging, we report a rich array of interfacial pattern morphologies: dense viscous, dendritic, viscoelastic f…
We study the periodic buckling patterns that emerge when elastic shells are subjected to geometric confinement. Residual swelling provides access to range of shapes (saddles, rolled sheets, cylinders, and spherical sections) which vary in their extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures. Our experimental and numerical data show that when these structures are radially confined, a single geometric parameter -- the ratio of the total shell radius to the amount of unconstrained material -- predicts the number of lobes formed. We then generalize our model to account for a relaxation of the in-plane constra…
We investigate the break-up of Newtonian/viscoelastic droplets in a viscoelastic/Newtonian matrix under the hydrodynamic conditions of a confined shear flow. Our numerical approach is based on a combination of Lattice-Boltzmann models (LBM) and Finite Difference (FD) schemes. LBM are used to model two immiscible fluids with variable viscosity ratio (i.e. the ratio of the droplet to matrix viscosity); FD schemes are used to model viscoelasticity, and the kinetics of the polymers is introduced using constitutive equations for viscoelastic fluids with finitely extensible non-linear elastic dumbbe…

We study geometrically-controlled twist transitions of a nematic confined between a sinusoidal grating and a flat substrate. In these cells the transition to the twisted state is driven by surface effects. We have identified the mechanisms responsible for the transition analytically and used exact numerical calculations to study the range of surface parameters where the twist instability occurs. Close to these values the cell operates under minimal external fields or temperature variations.
Most biological fluids are viscoelastic, meaning that they have elastic properties in addition to the dissipative properties found in Newtonian fluids. Computational models can help us understand viscoelastic flow, but are often limited in how they deal with complex flow geometries and suspended particles. Here, we present a lattice Boltzmann solver for Oldroyd-B fluids that can handle arbitrarily-shaped fixed and moving boundary conditions, which makes it ideally suited for the simulation of confined colloidal suspensions. We validate our method using several standard rheological setups, and …
In order to investigate the rheological properties of viscoelastic fluids by mesoscopic hydrodynamics methods, we develop a multi-particle collision dynamics (MPC) model for a fluid of harmonic dumbbells. The algorithm consists of alternating streaming and collision steps. The advantage of the harmonic interactions is that the integration of the equations of motion in the streaming step can be performed analytically. Therefore, the algorithm is computationally as efficient as the original MPC algorithm for Newtonian fluids. The collision step is the same as in the original MPC method. All part…
We present an entirely microscopic formulation of viscoleasticity of a fluid starting from the microscopic Stokes-Oldroyd B Model assuming instantaneous hydrodynamic friction, and show that linearization leads to a form for the frequency dependent viscosity that can be directly applied to the Langevin equation. Interestingly, the calculated expression of viscosity can be directly mapped to the Jeffreys' model which is essentially macroscopic in nature with the bulk viscoelasticity of the fluid being characterized by a complex elastic modulus G(ω). Further, we demonstrate that the concerned Gre…
We study the behavior of fluids, confined by geometrically structured substrates, upon approaching a critical point at T = Tc in their bulk phase diagram. As generic substrate structures periodic arrays of wedges and ridges are considered. Based on general renormalization group arguments we calculate, within mean field approximation, the universal scaling functions for order parameter profiles of a fluid close to a single structured substrate and discuss the decay of its spatial variation into the bulk. We compare the excess adsorption at corrugated substrates with the one at planar walls. The…
Using event-driven molecular dynamics simulations, we quantify how the self diffusivity of confined hard-sphere fluids depends on the nature of the confining boundaries. We explore systems with featureless confining boundaries that treat particle-boundary collisions in different ways and also various types of physically (i.e., geometrically) rough boundaries. We show that, for moderately dense fluids, the ratio of the self diffusivity of a rough wall system to that of an appropriate smooth-wall reference system is a linear function of the reciprocal wall separation, with the slope depending on…
We study stochastic dynamics of a point and extended inclusion within a one dimensional confined active viscoelastic gel. We show that the dynamics of a point inclusion can be described by a Langevin equation with a confining potential and multiplicative noise. Using a systematic adiabatic elimination over the fast variables, we arrive at an overdamped equation with a proper definition of the multiplicative noise. To highlight various features and to appeal to different biological contexts, we treat the inclusion in turn as a rigid extended element, an elastic element and a viscoelastic (Kelvi…
This paper presents a new approach to study the effects of temperature on the poro- elastic and viscoelastic behavior of articular cartilage. Biphasic solid-fluid mixture theory is applied to study the poro-mechancial behavior of articular cartilage in a fully saturated state. The balance of linear momentum, mass, and energy are considered to describe deformation of the solid skeleton, pore fluid pressure, and temperature distribution in the mixture. The mechanical model assumes both linear elastic and viscoelastic isotropic materials, infinitesimal strain theory, and a time-dependent response…
We report an investigation of the equilibrium and dynamic properties of polyelectrolyte solutions confined between platinum surfaces with a dynamic Surface Force Apparatus. The polyelectrolyte adsorbs on the surfaces in a dense compact layer bearing a surface charge in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The flow of the solution on this charged adsorbed layer is probed over four decades of spatial scales and one decade of frequency by dynamic measurements. At distances larger than the hundredth of nanometers, the flow of the viscoelastic solution is well described by a partial sli…
The aim of this paper is to calculate the time dependence of the mean position (and orientation) of a fluid particle when a fluid system at thermodynamic equilibrium is submitted to a mechanical action. The starting point of this novel theoretical approach is the introduction of a mechanical energy functional. Then using the notions of inertial modes and action temperature, and assuming a mechanical energy equipartition principle per mode, the model predict the existence of a dynamic phase transition where the rheological behavior of the medium evolves from a solid-like to a liquid-like regime…
We consider the dynamics of a charged inertial active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in a viscoelastic suspension under the action of an uniform magnetic field. With the help of both numerical simulation and analytical framework, we exactly investigate the viscoelastic response of the particle to the magnetic field by means of particle trajectories, mean displacement, and mean square displacement (MSD) calculations. The simulated particle trajectories and MSD calculations reveal that the steady state response of a confined harmonic particle to the magnetic field show interesting features due to t…
We investigate a model for a Stirling-like engine consisting of a passive Brownian particle confined by a harmonic potential and interacting with a suspension of active Brownian particles that self-propel in a viscous solvent, which cyclically operates under isothermal conditions by means of temporal variations of the trap stiffness and the self-propulsion speed of the active particles. We derive an effective stochastic equation of motion of the trapped Brownian particle, which includes a friction memory kernel as well as thermal and active fluctuating forces due to its coupling with the activ…

We study analytically the dynamics and the micro-structural changes of a host medium caused by a driven tracer particle moving in a confined, quiescent molecular crowding environment. Imitating typical settings of active micro-rheology experiments, we consider here a minimal model comprising a geometrically confined lattice system -- a two-dimensional strip-like or a three-dimensional capillary-like -- populated by two types of hard-core particles with stochastic dynamics -- a tracer particle driven by a constant external force and bath particles moving completely at random. Resorting to a dec…
A geometrically polar granular rod confined in 2-D geometry, subjected to a sinusoidal vertical oscillation, undergoes noisy self-propulsion in a direction determined by its polarity. When surrounded by a medium of crystalline spherical beads, it displays substantial negative fluctuations in its velocity. We find that the large deviation function (LDF) for the normalized velocity is strongly non-Gaussian with a kink at zero velocity, and that the antisymmetric part of the LDF is linear, resembling the fluctuation relation known for entropy production, even when the velocity distribution is cle…
Inspired by recent experiments on the dynamics of particles and polymers in artificial cytoskeletons and in cells, we introduce a modified Langevin equation for a particle in an environment that is a viscoelastic medium and that is brought out of equilibrium by the action of active fluctuations caused by molecular motors. We show that within such a model, the motion of a free particle crosses over from superdiffusive to subdiffusive as observed for tracer particles in an {\it in vitro} cytoskeleton or in a cell. We investigate the dynamics of a particle confined by a harmonic potential as a si…
Spontaneous emergence of correlated states such as flocks and vortices are prime examples of remarkable collective dynamics and self-organization observed in active matter. The formation of globally correlated polar states in geometrically confined systems proceeds through the emergence of a macroscopic steadily rotating vortex that spontaneously selects a clockwise or counterclockwise global chiral state. Here, we reveal that a global vortex formed by colloidal rollers exhibits state memory. The information remains stored even when the energy injection is ceased and the activity is terminated…
