We calculate the ultraviolet divergences in a weak field expansion of the Volkov propagator. This is done for the full Lorentz class of gauges. The expected gauge invariance of the vacuum mass shift in each sideband is recovered. However, the renormalisation of the background induced mass shift is shown to be gauge dependent. In particular, we show that it vanishes in Landau gauge. We find that only in that gauge does the vacuum renormalisation remove all ultraviolet divergences.
The perturbative description of an electron propagating in a plane wave background is developed and loop corrections analysed. The ultraviolet divergences and associated renormalisation are studied using the sideband framework within which the multiplicative form of the corrections becomes manifest. An additional renormalisation beyond that usually expected is identified and interpreted as a loop correction to the background induced mass term. Results for the strong field sector are conjectured.
Volkov states and Volkov propagator are the basic analytical tools to investigate QED processes occurring in the presence of an intense plane-wave electromagnetic field. In the present paper we provide alternative and relatively simple proofs of the completeness and of the orthonormality at a fixed time of the Volkov states. Concerning the completeness, we exploit some known properties of the Green's function of the Dirac operator in a plane wave, whereas the orthonormality of the Volkov states is proved, relying only on a geometric argument based on the Gauss theorem in four dimensions. In re…
The solution of the Dirac equation in the presence of an arbitrary plane wave, corresponding to the so-called Volkov states, has provided an enormous insight in strong-field QED. In [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{103}, 076011 (2021)] a new "fully quasiclassical" representation of the Volkov states has been found, which is equivalent to the one known in the literature but which more transparently shows the quasiclassical nature of the quantum dynamics of an electron in a plane-wave field. Here, we derive the corresponding expression of the propagator by constructing it using the fully quasiclassical for…
The electron propagator in a laser background has been shown to be made up of a series of sideband poles. In this paper we study this decomposition by analysing the impact of the residual gauge freedom in the Volkov solution on the sidebands. We show that the gauge transformations do not alter the location of the poles. The identification of the propagator from the two-point function is maintained but we show that the sideband structures mix under residual gauge transformations.
The quark propagator in presence of an arbitrary gluon field is calculated gauge and Lorentz covariantly order by order in terms of powers of gluon field and its derivatives. The result is independent of path connecting ends of propagator and leading order result coincides with the exact propagator in the trivial case of vanishing gluon field.
A formalism of gauge and Lorentz covariant Schwinger-Dyson equation is built up for fermion propagator in presence of arbitrary external gauge field within ladder approximation. Different type external electromagnetic field dependent trial solutions are investigated which spontaneously breaking chiral symmetry.
I discuss progress towards "bootstrapping" a Lorentz-violating gravity theory: namely, extending a linear Lorentz-violating theory of a rank-2 tensor to a non-linear theory by coupling this field to its own stress-energy tensor.
In this work we report new results concerning the question of dynamical mass generation in the Lorentz and PCT violating quantum electrodynamics. A one loop calculation for the vacuum polarization tensor is presented. The electron propagator, "dressed" by a Lorentz breaking extra term in the fermion Lagrangian density, is approximated by its first order: this scheme is shown to break gauge invariance. Then we rather consider a full calculation to second order in the Lorentz breaking parameter: we recover gauge invariance and use the Schwinger-Dyson equation to discuss the full photon propagato…
The propagators in axial-type, light-cone and planar gauges contain 1/(η\cdot k)^p-type singularities. These singularities have generally been treated by inventing prescriptions for them. In this work, we propose an alternative procedure for treating these singularities in the path integral formalism using the known way of treating the singularities in Lorentz gauges. To this end, we use a finite field-dependent BRS transformation that interpolates between Lorentz-type and the axial-type gauges. We arrive at the $ε$-dependent tree propagator in the axial-type gauges. We examine the singularity…
We decompose the quark propagator in the presence of an arbitrary gluon field with respect to a set of Dirac matrices. The four-dimensional integrals which arise in first order perturbation theory are rewritten as line-integrals along certain field lines, together with a weighted integration over the various field lines. It is then easy to transform the propagator into a form involving path ordered exponentials. The resulting expression is non-perturbative and has the correct behavior under Lorentz transformations, gauge transformations and charge conjugation. Furthermore it coincides with the…
We calculate a finite momentum-dependent part of the photon polarization operator in a simple model of Lorentz-violating quantum electrodynamics nonperturbatively at all orders of Lorentz-violating parameters. We sum one-particle reducible diagrams into the modified photon propagator, and determine the physical photon dispersion relation as the location of its pole. The photon dispersion relation, as well as its group velocity, acquires the one-loop momentum-dependent radiative correction. We constrain the Lorentz-violating parameters for heavy charged fermions (muon, $τ$-lepton, top-quark) fr…
We use the earlier results on the correlations of axial gauge Green's functions and the Lorentz gauge Green's functions obtained via finite field-dependent BRS transformations to study the question of the correct treatment of 1/(eta\cdot k)^p- type singularities in the axial gauge boson propagator. We show how the known treatment of the 1/(k^2)^n-type singularity in the Lorentz-type gauges can be used to write down the axial propagator via field transformation. We examine the singularity structure of the latter and find that the axial propagator so constructed has $no$ spurious poles, but a co…
The axial-gauge boson propagator contains 1/(n.k)^p-type singularities. These singularities have generally been treated by inventing prescriptions for them. We propose an alternative procedere for treating these singularities in the path-integral formalism using the known way of treating the 1/k^{2n}-type singularities in Lorentz-type gauges. For this purpose we use a finite field-dependent BRS transformation that inerpolates between the Lorentz and axial-type gauges. We arrive at the ε-dependent tree propagator in axial-type gauges.
We study the loop corrections to the scalar propagator and the fermionic self-energy for the mass dimension one fermionic dark matter with the Yukawa interaction. We find, in the former case, there is a non-vanishing Lorentz-violating term while the later is Lorentz-invariant. Our study of the fermionic loop correction shows that unitarity demands the fermionic mass must be at least half of the bosonic mass and that the Lorentz-violating term makes a non-trivial correction to the bosonic propagator. We discuss what these results mean in the context of the Standard Model and the possibility of …
The thermal self-energy of gluons generally depends on four Lorentz-invariant functions. Only two of these occur in the hard thermal loop approximation of Braaten and Pisarski because of the abelian Ward identity $K_μΠ^{μν}_{\rm htl}=0$. However, for the exact self-energy $K_μΠ^{μν}\neq 0$. In linear gauges the Slavnov-Taylor identity is shown to require a non-linear relation among three of the Lorentz-invariant self-energy function: $(Π_{C})^{2}=(K^{2}-Π_{L})Π_{D}$. This reduces the exact gluon propagator to a simple form containing only two types of poles: one that determines the behavior of…
We explore the possibility that the weak interaction violates Lorentz, and in particular rotational, invariance in neutron and allowed nuclear beta decay. A broad class of Lorentz-violating effects is considered, in which the standard propagator of the W-boson acquires an additional Lorentz-violating tensor. The general decay rate for allowed beta decay that incorporates such a modified propagator is derived. The resulting Lorentz-violating signals are discussed for the different types of beta-decay transitions, Fermi, Gamow-Teller, and mixed. We study the implications of our formalism for ded…
We consider gauge field theories in the presence of ensembles of vector backgrounds. While Lorentz invariance is explicitely broken in the presence of any single background, here, the Lorentz invariance of the theory is restored by averaging over a Lorentz invariant ensemble of backgrounds, i.e. a set of background vectors that is mapped onto itself under Lorentz transformations. This framewkork is used to study the effects of a non-trivial but Lorentz invariant vacuum structure or mass dimension two vector condensates by identifying the background with a shift of the gauge field. Up to now, t…
After imposing current conservation together with the Gauss law as initial conditions on the Abelian Nambu model, we prove that the resulting theory is equivalent to standard QED in the non-linear gauge $\left(A_{μ}A^{μ}-n^{2}M^{2}\right)=0$, to all orders in perturbation theory. We show this by writing both models in terms of the same variables, which produce identical Feynman rules for the interactions and propagators. A crucial point is to verify that the Faddeev-Popov ghosts arising from the gauge fixing procedure in the QED sector decouple to all orders. We verify this decoupling by follo…
The symmetries of a scalar field theory in multifractional spacetimes are analyzed. The free theory realizes the Poincaré algebra, and the associated symmetries are modifications of ordinary translations and Lorentz transformations. In the interacting case, the Poincaré algebra is broken by interaction terms. The Feynman propagator of the scalar field is computed and found to possess the usual mass poles. As a consequence of these findings, the mass of a particle is a well-defined concept at all scales, and a perturbative quantum theory can be constructed.
Lorentz violation emerged from a fundamental description of nature may impact, at low energies, the Maxwell sector, so that contributions from such new physics to the electromagnetic vertex would be induced. Particularly, nonbirefringent $CPT$-even effects from the electromagnetic sector modified by the Lorentz- and $CPT$-violating Standard Model Extension alter the structure of the free photon propagator. We calculate Lorentz-violating contributions to the electromagnetic vertex, at the one-loop level, by using a modified photon propagator carrying this sort of effects. We take the photon off…
We study the two-point function for the gauge boson in the axial-type gauges. We use the exact treatment of the axial gauges recently proposed that is intrinsically compatible with the Lorentz type gauges in the path-integral formulation and has been arrived at from this connection and which is a ``one-vector'' treatment. We find that in this treatment, we can evaluate the two-point functions without imposing any additional interpretation on the axial gauge 1/(n.q)^p-type poles. The calculations are as easy as the other treatments based on other known prescriptions. Unlike the ``uniform-prescr…
We study radiative corrections on the photon propagator from the electroweak sector of the minimal Lorentz- and $CPT$-violating Standard Model Extension. We derive the most general Lorentz-violating ghost sector from BRST symmetry and renormalization theory. We introduce a Lorentz-violating nonlinear gauge that simplifies both the Higgs and gauge-sector extensions, which can be helpful in radiative corrections. At one loop, these sectors contribute to the $CPT$-even part of the photon propagator, characterized by the Riemann-type tensor $(k_F)_{αβμν}$. We give exact results for the contributio…
We illustrate a duality relation between one-loop integrals and single-cut phase-space integrals. The duality relation is realised by a modification of the customary +i0 prescription of the Feynman propagators. The new prescription regularizing the propagators, which we write in a Lorentz covariant form, compensates for the absence of multiple-cut contributions that appear in the Feynman Tree Theorem. The duality relation can be extended to generic one-loop quantities, such as Green's functions, in any relativistic, local and unitary field theories.
We analyze the pattern of normal modes in linearized Lorentz-violating massive gravity over the 5-dimensional moduli space of mass terms. Ghost-free theories arise at bifurcation points when the ghosts get out of the spectrum of propagating particles due to vanishing of the coefficient in front of ω^2 in the propagator. Similarly, the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (DVZ) discontinuities in the Newton law arise at another type of bifurcations, when the coefficient vanishes in front of \vec k^2. When the Lorentz invariance is broken, these two kinds of bifurcations get independent and one can easily f…
Analyticity of gluon and Faddeev--Popov ghost propagators and their form factors on the complex momentum-squared plane is exploited to continue analytically the ultraviolet asymptotic form calculable by perturbation theory into the infrared non-perturbative solution. We require the non-perturbative multiplicative renormalizability to write down the renormalization group equation. These requirements enable one to settle the value of the exponent characterizing the infrared asymptotic solution with power behavior which was originally predicted by Gribov and has recently been found as approximate…
The chirally symmetric Overlap quark propagator is explored in Coulomb gauge. This gauge is well suited for studying the relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, since confinement can be attributed to the infrared divergent Lorentz-vector dressing function. Using quenched gauge field configurations on a $20^4$ lattice, the quark propagator dressing functions are evaluated, the dynamical quark mass is extracted and the chiral limit of these quantities is discussed. By removing the low-lying modes of the Dirac operator, chiral symmetry is artificially restored. Its effect on th…
We reinvestigate the problem of Gribov ambiguities within the Landau (or Lorentz) gauge for the ghost and gluon propagators in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We make use of the full symmetry group of the action taking into account {\it large}, i.e. non-periodic $\mathbb{Z}(2)$ gauge transformations leaving lattice plaquettes invariant. Enlarging in this way the gauge orbits for any given gauge field configuration the Landau gauge can be fixed at higher local extrema of the gauge functional in comparison with standard (overrelaxation) techniques. This has a clearly visible effect not only for…
The light-front (LF) quantization of QCD in light-cone (l.c.) gauge is discussed. The Dirac method is employed to construct the LF Hamiltonian and theory quantized canonically. The Dyson-Wick perturbation theory expansion based on LF-time ordering is constructed. The framework incorporates in it simultaneously the Lorentz gauge condition as an operator equation as well. The propagator of the dynamical $ψ_+$ part of the free fermionic propagator is shown to be causal while the gauge field propagator is found to be transverse. The interaction Hamiltonian is re-expressed in the form closely resem…
We obtain modified dispersion relations by requiring the vanishing of determinant of inverse of modified photon propagators in Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) theory. Inspired by these dispersion relations, we give a more general dispersion relation with less assumption and apply it to the recent observed gamma-ray burst GRB090510 to extract various constraints on LIV parameters. We find that the constraint on quantum gravity mass is slightly larger than the Planck mass but is consistent with the other recent observations, so the corresponding LIV coefficient $ξ_1$ has reached the natural o…
The operator-product expansion(OPE) could be employed to obtain the lowest-order, nonlocal quark scalar condensate component of gluon vacuum polarization. In particular, nonlocal quark scalar condensate can be calculated by solving Dyson-Schwinger Equation(DSE) of QCD. Then, field-theoretic aspects of the gluon vacuum polarization and nonperturbative gluon propagator will be considered in the Landau gauge of the Lorentz gauge fixing. The gluon propagator we obtained is finite in the infrared domain where the single gluon mass $m_g$ can be determined. Our results of the ratio $m_{g}/Λ_{QCD}$ th…
