In this work recent advances in conditional adversarial networks are investigated to develop an end-to-end architecture based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to directly map realistic colours to an input greyscale image. Observing that existing colourisation methods sometimes exhibit a lack of colourfulness, this paper proposes a method to improve colourisation results. In particular, the method uses Generative Adversarial Neural Networks (GANs) and focuses on improvement of training stability to enable better generalisation in large multi-class image datasets. Additionally, the integration of instance and batch normalisation layers in both generator and discriminator is introduced to the popular U-Net architecture, boosting the network capabilities to generalise the style changes of the content. The method has been tested using the ILSVRC 2012 dataset, achieving improved automatic colourisation results compared to other methods based on GANs.
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are an arrange of two neural networks -- the generator and the discriminator -- that are jointly trained to generate artificial data, such as images, from random inputs. The quality of these generated images has recently reached such levels that can often lead both machines and humans into mistaking fake for real examples. However, the process performed by the generator of the GAN has some limitations when we want to condition the network to generate images from subcategories of a specific class. Some recent approaches tackle this \textit{conditional gene…
In this paper, we have developed a general-purpose architecture, Vit-Gan, capable of performing most of the image-to-image translation tasks from semantic image segmentation to single image depth perception. This paper is a follow-up paper, an extension of generator-based model [1] in which the obtained results were very promising. This opened the possibility of further improvements with adversarial architecture. We used a unique vision transformers-based generator architecture and Conditional GANs(cGANs) with a Markovian Discriminator (PatchGAN) (https://github.com/YigitGunduc/vit-gan). In th…
Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) comprises nearly 80% of all breast cancers. The detection of IDC is a necessary preprocessing step in determining the aggressiveness of the cancer, determining treatment protocols, and predicting patient outcomes, and is usually performed manually by an expert pathologist. Here, we describe a novel algorithm for automatically detecting IDC using semi-supervised conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs). The framework is simple and effective at improving scores on a range of metrics over a baseline CNN.
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a well-known technique that is trained on samples (e.g. pictures of fruits) and which after training is able to generate realistic new samples. Conditional GANs (CGANs) additionally provide label information for subclasses (e.g. apple, orange, pear) which enables the GAN to learn more easily and increase the quality of its output samples. We use GANs to learn architectural features of major cities and to generate images of buildings which do not exist. We show that currently available GAN and CGAN architectures are unsuited for this task and propose a…

Conditional generative models aim to learn the underlying joint distribution of data and labels to achieve conditional data generation. Among them, the auxiliary classifier generative adversarial network (AC-GAN) has been widely used, but suffers from the problem of low intra-class diversity of the generated samples. The fundamental reason pointed out in this paper is that the classifier of AC-GAN is generator-agnostic, which therefore cannot provide informative guidance for the generator to approach the joint distribution, resulting in a minimization of the conditional entropy that decreases …

Conditional generative adversarial networks have shown exceptional generation performance over the past few years. However, they require large numbers of annotations. To address this problem, we propose a novel generative adversarial network utilizing weak supervision in the form of pairwise comparisons (PC-GAN) for image attribute editing. In the light of Bayesian uncertainty estimation and noise-tolerant adversarial training, PC-GAN can estimate attribute rating efficiently and demonstrate robust performance in noise resistance. Through extensive experiments, we show both qualitatively and q…
Conditional generation is a subclass of generative problems where the output of the generation is conditioned by the attribute information. In this paper, we present a stochastic contrastive conditional generative adversarial network (InfoSCC-GAN) with an explorable latent space. The InfoSCC-GAN architecture is based on an unsupervised contrastive encoder built on the InfoNCE paradigm, an attribute classifier and an EigenGAN generator. We propose a novel training method, based on generator regularization using external or internal attributes every $n$-th iteration, using a pre-trained contrast…
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have been remarkably successful in learning complex high dimensional real word distributions and generating realistic samples. However, they provide limited control over the generation process. Conditional GANs (cGANs) provide a mechanism to control the generation process by conditioning the output on a user defined input. Although training GANs requires only unsupervised data, training cGANs requires labelled data which can be very expensive to obtain. We propose a framework for semi-supervised training of cGANs which utilizes sparse labels to learn the …
We examined the use of modern Generative Adversarial Nets to generate novel images of oil paintings using the Painter By Numbers dataset. We implemented Spectral Normalization GAN (SN-GAN) and Spectral Normalization GAN with Gradient Penalty, and compared their outputs to a Deep Convolutional GAN. Visually, and quantitatively according to the Sliced Wasserstein Distance metric, we determined that the SN-GAN produced paintings that were most comparable to our training dataset. We then performed a series of experiments to add supervised conditioning to SN-GAN, the culmination of which is what we…

Synthesizing a realistic image from textual description is a major challenge in computer vision. Current text to image synthesis approaches falls short of producing a highresolution image that represent a text descriptor. Most existing studies rely either on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) or Variational Auto Encoders (VAEs). GANs has the capability to produce sharper images but lacks the diversity of outputs, whereas VAEs are good at producing a diverse range of outputs, but the images generated are often blurred. Taking into account the relative advantages of both GANs and VAEs, we pr…

Conditionality has become a core component for Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for generating synthetic images. GANs are usually using latent conditionality to control the generation process. However, tabular data only contains manifest variables. Thus, latent conditionality either restricts the generated data or does not produce sufficiently good results. Therefore, we propose a new methodology to include conditionality in tabular GANs inspired by image completion methods. This article presents ciDATGAN, an evolution of the Directed Acyclic Tabular GAN (DATGAN) that has already been sh…

This paper introduces a novel and fully unsupervised framework for conditional GAN training in which labels are automatically obtained from data. We incorporate a clustering network into the standard conditional GAN framework that plays against the discriminator. With the generator, it aims to find a shared structured mapping for associating pseudo-labels with the real and fake images. Our generator outperforms unconditional GANs in terms of FID with significant margins on large scale datasets like ImageNet and LSUN. It also outperforms class conditional GANs trained on human labels on CIFAR10…

We introduce a new model for building conditional generative models in a semi-supervised setting to conditionally generate data given attributes by adapting the GAN framework. The proposed semi-supervised GAN (SS-GAN) model uses a pair of stacked discriminators to learn the marginal distribution of the data, and the conditional distribution of the attributes given the data respectively. In the semi-supervised setting, the marginal distribution (which is often harder to learn) is learned from the labeled + unlabeled data, and the conditional distribution is learned purely from the labeled data.…

Automatic analysis of spatio-temporal microscopy images is inevitable for state-of-the-art research in the life sciences. Recent developments in deep learning provide powerful tools for automatic analyses of such image data, but heavily depend on the amount and quality of provided training data to perform well. The method combines spatiotemporal statistical shape models of different cell cycle stages with a conditional GAN to generate time series of …
Contemporary Artificial Intelligence technologies allow for the employment of Computer Vision to discern good crops from bad, providing a step in the pipeline of selecting healthy fruit from undesirable fruit, such as those which are mouldy or gangrenous. State-of-the-art works in the field report high accuracy results on small datasets (<1000 images), which are not representative of the population regarding real-world usage. The goals of this study are to further enable real-world usage by improving generalisation with data augmentation as well as to reduce overfitting and energy usage throug…
Existing conditional image synthesis frameworks generate images based on user inputs in a single modality, such as text, segmentation, sketch, or style reference. They are often unable to leverage multimodal user inputs when available, which reduces their practicality. To address this limitation, we propose the Product-of-Experts Generative Adversarial Networks (PoE-GAN) framework, which can synthesize images conditioned on multiple input modalities or any subset of them, even the empty set. PoE-GAN consists of a product-of-experts generator and a multimodal multiscale projection discriminator…
Generative adversarial network (GAN) has greatly improved the quality of unsupervised image generation. Previous GAN-based methods often require a large amount of high-quality training data while producing a small number (e.g., tens) of classes. This work aims to scale up GANs to thousands of classes meanwhile reducing the use of high-quality data in training. We propose an image generation method based on conditional transferring features, which can capture pixel-level semantic changes when transforming low-quality images into high-quality ones. Moreover, self-supervision learning is integrat…

One of the most interesting challenges in Artificial Intelligence is to train conditional generators which are able to provide labeled adversarial samples drawn from a specific distribution. In this work, a new framework is presented to train a deep conditional generator by placing a classifier in parallel with the discriminator and back propagate the classification error through the generator network. The method is versatile and is applicable to any variations of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) implementation, and also gives superior results compared to similar methods.

Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) have enabled controllable image synthesis for many vision and graphics applications. However, recent cGANs are 1-2 orders of magnitude more compute-intensive than modern recognition CNNs. For example, GauGAN consumes 281G MACs per image, compared to 0.44G MACs for MobileNet-v3, making it difficult for interactive deployment. In this work, we propose a general-purpose compression framework for reducing the inference time and model size of the generator in cGANs. Directly applying existing compression methods yields poor performance due to the …
Recently, subsampling or refining images generated from unconditional GANs has been actively studied to improve the overall image quality. Unfortunately, these methods are often observed less effective or inefficient in handling conditional GANs (cGANs) -- conditioning on a class (aka class-conditional GANs) or a continuous variable (aka continuous cGANs or CcGANs). In this work, we introduce an effective and efficient subsampling scheme, named conditional density ratio-guided rejection sampling (cDR-RS), to sample high-quality images from cGANs. Specifically, we first develop a novel conditio…
Recovering badly damaged face images is a useful yet challenging task, especially in extreme cases where the masked or damaged region is very large. One of the major challenges is the ability of the system to generalize on faces outside the training dataset. We propose to tackle this extreme inpainting task with a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) that utilizes structural information, such as edges, as a prior condition. Edge information can be obtained from the partially masked image and a structurally similar image or a hand drawing. In our proposed conditional GAN, we pass th…
We propose a simple but effective modification of the discriminators, namely measure-conditional discriminators, as a plug-and-play module for different GANs. By taking the generated distributions as part of input so that the target optimum for the discriminator is stationary, the proposed discriminator is more robust than the vanilla one. A variant of the measure-conditional discriminator can also handle multiple target distributions, or act as a surrogate model of statistical distances such as KL divergence with applications to transfer learning.

In this paper, we propose a novel variational generator framework for conditional GANs to catch semantic details for improving the generation quality and diversity. Traditional generators in conditional GANs simply concatenate the conditional vector with the noise as the input representation, which is directly employed for upsampling operations. However, the hidden condition information is not fully exploited, especially when the input is a class label. Therefore, we introduce a variational inference into the generator to infer the posterior of latent variable only from the conditional input, …

This paper explores conditional image generation with a One-Vs-All classifier based on the Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Building on top of the success of generative adversarial networks (GANs), conditional GANs attempt to better direct the data generation process by conditioning with certain additional information. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have shown impressive results in both unconditional and conditional image generation. In recent literature, it is shown that pre-trained GANs, on a different dataset, can be transferred to improve the image generation from a small target data. The same, however, has not been well-studied in the case of conditional GANs (cGANs), which provides new opportunities for knowledge transfer compared to unconditional setup. In particular, the new classes may borrow knowledge from the related old classes, or share knowledge among themselves to improve the training.…

In recent years, unsupervised/weakly-supervised conditional generative adversarial networks (GANs) have achieved many successes on the task of modeling and generating data.
