One of the key questions in particle physics and astrophysics is the nature of dark matter, which existence has been confirmed in many astrophysical and cosmological observations. Besides direct and indirect detection experiments, collider searches for dark matter offer the unique possibility to not only detect dark matter particles but in case of discovery to also study their properties by making statements about the potential underlying theory. The search program for dark matter at the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider is comprehensive, and includes both supersymmetric dark matter candidates and other alternatives. This review presents the latest status in these searches, with special focus on supersymmetric dark matter particles.
This Resource Book reviews the physics opportunities of a next-generation e+e- linear collider and discusses options for the experimental program. Part 2 reviews the possible experiments on Higgs bosons and supersymmetric particles that can be done at a linear collider.
We review the status of searches for Supersymmetry at the Tevatron Collider. After discussing the theoretical aspects relevant to the production and decay of supersymmetric particles at the Tevatron, we present the current results for Runs Ia and Ib as of the summer of 1997. To appear in the book "Perspectives in Supersymmetry", edited by G.L. Kane, World Scientific.
We consider typical hadron collider detector signals sensitive to delayed decays of the lightest neutralino to photon plus goldstino and demonstrate the potential for substantially increasing the portion of the general parameter space of a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model that can be probed at the Tevatron.
Recently N. Arkani-Hamed and S. Dimopoulos proposed a supersymmetric model \cite{Arkani-Hamed:2004fb}, dubbed "Split Supersymmetry" in Ref. \cite{Giudice:2004tc}, which can remove most of the unpleasant shortcomings of TeV Supersymmetry. In this model all scalars except one finely tuned Higgs boson are ultra heavy while the neutralino and chargino might remain light in order to achieve gauge coupling unification and accord with the dark matter density. In this paper, we investigated the impact of this new model on chargino pair production at next generation linear colliders. Our numerical resu…
This paper discusses supersymmetry discovery potential of the upgraded DØexperiment at the Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider. Six final states with large transverse energy (momentum) leptons or photons (with or without large transverse momentum imbalances) are studied. These final states are expected to have small backgrounds and are thereby ideal for new physics searches. Implications of the analyses of these final states on Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking models are discussed for integrated luminosities of 2 and 30 1/fb. This study demonstrates that a large class of supersymmetry models can…
Experiments at particle colliders have reached center of mass energies well above 100 GeV, equivalent to temperatures which existed shortly after the big bang. These experiments, testing the initial conditions of the universe have, with great precision, established the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In contrast, the existence of the Higgs boson and perhaps Supersymmetry remain speculative, as todays searches have failed to find signs of their existence. However, the next generation of high energy collider experiments and especially CERN's 14 TeV LHC, expected to start operation in the yea…
This review summarizes the state of the art in searches for supersymmetry at colliders on the eve of the LHC era. Supersymmetry is unique among extensions of the standard model in being motivated by naturalness, dark matter, and force unification, both with and without gravity. At the same time, weak-scale supersymmetry encompasses a wide range of experimental signals that are also found in many other frameworks. We recall the motivations for supersymmetry and review the various models and their distinctive features. We then comprehensively summarize searches for neutral and charged Higgs boso…
We present a pedagogical introduction to supersymmetry and supersymmetric models and give an overview of the potential of the linear collider for studying them. If supersymmetry is found, its discovery will bring with it many more questions than answers. These include: -Are the newly discovered particles really superpartners? -If not all superpartners are discovered, where are the rest of them? -Do the electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces unify? -Is a supersymmetric particle the dark matter? -How are the supersymmetric flavor and CP problems solved? -What is the scale of supersymmetry brea…
Discovery of the Higgs boson and lack of discovery of superpartners in the first run at LHC are both predictions of split supersymmetry with thermal dark matter. We discuss what it would take to find gluinos at hadron supercolliders, including the LHC at 14 TeV center of mass energy, and future pp colliders at 100 TeV and 200 TeV. We generalize the discussion by re-expressing the search capacity in terms of gluino to lightest superpartner mass ratio, and apply results to other scenarios, such as gauge mediation and mirage mediation.
We consider the possibility that supersymmetry is broken at a low scale, within one order of magnitude above the TeV scale. In such a case, the degrees of freedom associated with the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry, the goldstino fermion and its scalar superpartner (the sgoldstino), can have significant interactions with the Standard Model particles and their superpartners. We discuss some characteristic processes, involving the goldstino and the sgoldstino, and the collider signatures they give rise to. These signatures involve scalar resonances in the di-photon, di-jet, di-boson and di…
We study the pair-production and decay of right handed selectrons within a Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking Model in polarised $e^-e^-$ interaction. Detailed analyses of the possible signals and backgrounds are performed for a few selected points in the parameter space. A judicious choice for polarisation of the initial electron beam helps eliminate almost the entire Standard Model background. We also show that phase space distributions can be used to distinguish such a supersummetry breaking scheme from the supergravity inspired models.
A new contribution from pair-production of light gluinos, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks, helps to obtain a bottom-quark production rate in better agreement with hadron collider data. The masses of the gluino and bottom squark are further restricted by the ratio of like-sign to opposite-sign leptons at hadron colliders. Constraints on this scenario from other data are examined and predictions are made.
We contrast the experimental signatures of low energy supersymmetry and the model of Universal Extra Dimensions and discuss various methods for their discrimination at hadron colliders. We study the discovery reach of the Tevatron and the LHC for level 2 Kaluza-Klein modes, which would indicate the presence of extra dimensions. We find that with 100 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data the LHC will be able to discover the $γ_2$ and $Z_2$ KK modes as separate resonances if their masses are below 2 TeV. We also investigate the possibility to differentiate the spins of the superpartners and KK modes by means …
A review of the status of searches for Supersymmetry at the Tevatron Collider as of the Summer of 1997. This is a new version of the previous review, substantially shortened to fit editorial guidelines, and significantly different to warrant a separate posting. To appear in "Perspectives on Supersymmetry", ed. G.L. Kane (World Scientific, Singapore).
Universal extra dimensions and supersymmetry have rather similar experimental signatures at hadron colliders. The proper interpretation of an LHC discovery in either case may therefore require further data from a lepton collider. In this paper we identify methods for discriminating between the two scenarios at the linear collider. We study the processes of Kaluza-Klein muon pair production in universal extra dimensions in parallel to smuon pair production in supersymmetry, accounting for the effects of detector resolution, beam-beam interactions and accelerator induced backgrounds. We find tha…
Advantages of the e-e- option at linear colliders for the study of supersymmetry are highlighted. The fermion number violating process $e^- e^- \to \selectron^- \selectron^-$ provides unique opportunities for studies of slepton masses and flavor mixings. In particular, slepton mass measurements at the 100 MeV level through threshold scans of scalar pair production may be possible. Such measurements are over an order of magnitude better than those possible in e+e- mode, require far less integrated luminosity, and may lead to precise, model-independent measurements of $\tanβ$. Implications for s…
We analyze the prospects for discovering supersymmetry at the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LEP colliders in the scenario that the lightest supersymmetric particle is a gravitino of mass < 1 keV. We consider in particular the case that the lightest neutralino has a nearly 100% branching fraction into gravitino + photon within the detector. This implies that supersymmetric events should contain both missing (transverse) energy and two energetic photons. Therefore one can search for supersymmetry simply through inclusive production of superpartners. We consider the exclusion and reach capabilities …
We discuss the potential impacts on the CMSSM of future LHC runs and possible electron-positron and higher-energy proton-proton colliders, considering searches for supersymmetry via MET events, precision electroweak physics, Higgs measurements and dark matter searches. We validate and present estimates of the physics reach for exclusion or discovery of supersymmetry via MET searches at the LHC, which should cover the low-mass regions of the CMSSM parameter space favoured in a recent global analysis. As we illustrate with a low-mass benchmark point, a discovery would make possible accurate LHC …
We consider a general class of models with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking in which the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. Several qualitatively different scenarios arise for the phenomenology of such models, depending on which superpartner(s) decay dominantly to the gravitino. At LEP2, neutralino pair production and slepton pair production can lead to a variety of promising discovery signals, which we systematically study. We investigate the impact of backgrounds for these signals and show how they can be reduced, and outline the effects of model parameter variations on …
Squarks and gluinos have been searched for at hadron colliders in events with multiple jets and missing transverse energy. No excess has been observed to date, and from a comparison of experimental cross section limits and theoretical cross section predictions one can deduce lower bounds on the squark and gluino masses. We present an improved analysis of squark and gluino mass bounds which is based on state-of-the-art cross section calculations including the summation of large threshold corrections. For illustration, we consider experimental data obtained by the CDF collaboration at the Fermil…
The discovery of the Higgs boson at $\sim 125$ GeV indicates that the scale of weak scale supersymmetry is higher than what was perceived in the pre-Higgs boson discovery era and lies in the several TeV region. This makes the discovery of supersymmetry more challenging and argues for hadron colliders beyond LHC at $\sqrt s=14$ TeV. The Future Circular Collider (FCC) study at CERN is considering a 100 TeV collider to be installed in a 100 km tunnel in the Lake Geneva basin. Another 100 km collider being considered in China is the Super proton-proton Collider (SppC). A third possibility recently…
We simulate precision measurements of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking (GMSB) parameters at a 500 GeV e+e- linear collider in the scenario where a neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. Information on the supersymmetry breaking and the messenger sectors of the theory is extracted from the measured sparticle mass spectrum and neutralino lifetime.
This document is a brief review of some of the most relevant searches for Supersymmetry carried out at the Tevatron and the LHC collider experiments, until the end of August 2011. Different final states covering R-parity conserving and violating scenarios have been scrutinized and no significant deviation from the Standard Model has been observed. As a result, new limits on the Supersymmetry parameter space have been established.
The Higgs boson, relic of the spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking, is one of the most important searches at current hadron colliders. This thesis wishes to present theoretical predictions for the inclusive production and decay of the Higgs boson(s) either in the context of the Standard Model (SM) or in its minimal supersymmetric extension (MSSM) where five Higgs bosons are present. We will focus on the two major hadron colliders, the Fermilab Tevatron collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which is running at 7 TeV. We will present the predictions for the dominant production a…
The existence of dark matter is currently one of the strongest motivations for physics beyond the standard model. Its implications for future colliders are discussed. In the case of neutralino dark matter, cosmological bounds do not provide useful upper limits on superpartner masses. However, in simple models, cosmological considerations do imply that for supersymmetry to be observable at a 500 GeV linear collider, some signature of supersymmetry must appear before the LHC.
Some theories of particle physics are so compelling that it is worth doing a comprehensive and systematic set of experimental searches to see if they are realized in nature. Supersymmetry is one such theory. This review focuses on the motivation for a broad set of cosmology-inspired search strategies at the Tevatron and on their implementation and results at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) with the first few fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity of data.
We discuss the possible signatures at the Large Hadron Collider in models where R-parity is spontaneously broken. In the context of the minimal gauge theory for R-parity, we investigate signals with multileptons which can provide an unique test of this theory. The possible impact of these ideas for the search of supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider is discussed. We also discuss the constraints coming from cosmology due to the existence of two light sterile neutrinos in the theory.
Though the minimal model of anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking has been significantly constrained by recent experimental and theoretical work, there are still allowed regions of the parameter space for moderate to large values of $\tanβ$. We show that these regions will be comprehensively probed in a ${\sqrt s} =1$ TeV $e^+e^-$ linear collider. Diagnostic signals to this end are studied by zeroing in on a unique and distinct feature of a large class of models in this genre: a neutral winolike Lightest Supersymmetric Particle closely degenerate in mass with a winolike chargino. The pair pr…
In this review we discuss constraints on minimal supersymmetric models of particle physics implied by the recent astrophysical observations of WMAP. Although the prospects of detecting supersymmetry increase and 90 percent of the available MSSM parameter space can safely be reached by the sensitivity of future colliders, nevertheless we pay particular emphasis on discussing regions of the appropriate phase diagrams, which -if realized - would imply that detection of supersymmetry, at least in the context of minimal models, could be out of colliders reach. We also discuss the importance of a pr…
Supersymmetry may be discovered at high energy colliders, through low energy precision measurements, and by dark matter searches. We present a comprehensive analysis of all available probes in minimal supergravity. This work extends previous analyses by including the focus point branch of parameter space and the full array of promising indirect dark matter searches. We find that particle and astrophysical searches underway are highly complementary: each separately provides only partial coverage of the available parameter space, but together they probe almost all models. Cosmology does {\em not…
A long-standing discrepancy between the bottom-quark production cross section and predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics is addressed. We show that pair production of light gluinos, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks, yields a bottom-quark production rate in agreement with hadron collider data. We examine constraints on this scenario from low-energy data and make predictions that may be tested at the next run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider.
In this note we discuss a characteristic collider signature of models of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in which the selectron and smuon are mass-degenerate co-NLSP. In these models, all processes involving superpartners give rise to two NLSP selectrons or smuons, each of which subsequently decays to a nearly massless LSP gravitino and an electron or a muon. In a large region of the parameter space, the NLSPs travel macroscopic distances, of the order 0.1-1000 mm, before they decay. Hence, these models give rise to collider signatures involving charged tracks that end at vertices, which…
We introduce a set of CMSSM benchmark scenarios that take into account the constraints from LEP, Tevatron, $b \to s γ$, $g_μ- 2$ and cosmology. The benchmark points are chosen to span the range of different generic possibilities, including focus-point models, points where coannihilation effects on the relic density are important, and points with rapid relic annihilation via direct-channel Higgs poles, as well as points with smaller sparticle masses. We make initial estimates of the physics reaches of different accelerators, including the LHC, and $e^+ e^-$ colliders in the sub- and multi-TeV r…
In Profumo di SUSY, we presented evidence that CMS&ATLAS may have already registered a handful of deftly camouflaged supersymmetry events at the LHC in the multijet channels. Here, we explore the prospect for corroboration of this suggestion from 5 additional CMS&ATLAS search strategies targeting the production of light stops & gluinos at lower jet counts, which variously depend on heavy flavor tagging and the inclusion or exclusion of associated leptons. The current operating phase of the 7TeV LHC is highly conducive to the production of gluinos & light stops, given the supersymmetric particl…
We consider the phenomenology of a class of gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking (GMSB) models at a e+e- Linear Collider (LC) with c.o.m. energy up to 500 GeV. In particular, we refer to a high-luminosity (L ~ 3 x 10^34 cm^-2 s^-1) machine, and use detailed simulation tools for a proposed detector. Among the GMSB-model building options, we define a simple framework and outline its predictions at the LC, under the assumption that no SUSY signal is detected at LEP or Tevatron. Our focus is on the case where a neutralino (N1) is the next-to-lightest SUSY particle (NLSP), for which we dete…
It has been known for a long time that the cross section for bottom-quark $b$ production at hadron collider energies exceeds theoretical expectations. An additional contribution from pair-production of light gluinos $\tilde{g}$, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks $\tilde{b}$, helps to obtain a $b$ production rate in better agreement with data. The masses of the $\tilde{g}$ and $\tilde{b}$ are restricted further by the ratio of like-sign to opposite-sign leptons at hadron colliders. Constraints on this scenario from other data are examined, an…
Motivated by future collider proposals that aim to measure the Higgs properties precisely, we study the partial decay widths of the lightest Higgs boson in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with an emphasis on the parameter region where all superparticles and heavy Higgs bosons are not accessible at the LHC. Taking account of phenomenological constraints such as the Higgs mass, flavor constraints, vacuum stability, and perturbativity of coupling constants up to the grand unification scale, we discuss how large the deviations of the partial decay widths from the standard model predictio…
We examine the experimental signatures for the production of gluinos at colliders and in cosmic rays within the split supersymmetry scenario. Unlike in the MSSM, the gluinos in this model are relatively long-lived due to the large value of the squark masses which mediate their decay. Searches at colliders are found to be sensitive to the nature of gluino fragmentation as well as the gluino-hadron interactions with nuclei and energy deposition as it traverses the detector. We find that the worst-case scenario, where a neutral gluino-hadron passes through the detector with little energy depositi…
Supersymmetry (SUSY) remains one of the leading candidates for physics beyond the Standard Model, and the search for SUSY will be a central focus of future collider experiments. Complementary information on the viability and character of SUSY can be obtained via the analysis of precision electroweak measurements. In this review, we discuss the prospective implications for SUSY of present and future precision studies at low energy.
The topologies arising from the production of supersymmetric particles at the LEP collider are briefly reviewed recalling detector requirements, simulation and other experimental issues.
We propose a new set of supersymmetric benchmark scenarios, taking into account the constraints from LEP, b to s gamma, g_mu - 2 and cosmology. We work in the context of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal soft supersymetry-breaking masses and assume that R parity is conserved. We propose benchmark points that exemplify the different generic possibilities, including focus-point models, points where coannihilation effects on the relic density are important, and points with rapid relic annihilation via direct-channel Higgs poles. We discuss the principal decays and signatures of the diff…
An overview of supersymmetry searches is presented, covering collider experiments, direct and indirect searches for supersymmetric dark matter. Recent LHC experimental results are reviewed, and the constraints from B-meson decays are reported. Implications for supersymmetry of the latest direct and indirect searches are thoroughly discussed. The focus is on the complementarity of the various probes -- particle and astrophysical -- for constraining Supersymmetry.
After an introduction recalling that we expect low energy supersymmetry to be part of our description of nature because of considerable indirect evidence and successful predictions, and a discussion of the essential role of data for formulating and testing string theory, these lectures focus on the role of the supersymmetry soft-breaking Lagrangian in connecting experiment and string theory. How to measure tan$β$ and the soft parameters is examined via a number of applications, and the difficulty of measuring tan$β$ at hadron colliders is explained. In each case the important role of soft phas…
The D0 and CDF experiments at the proton-antiproton collider Tevatron have extensively searched for the Higgs boson and signals of supersymmetry using a wide range of signatures. The status of these searches is reviewed with a focus on recent measurements.
The results for searches for Supersymmetry (SUSY) at the Tevatron Collider are summarized in this paper. We focus here on searches for trileptons and the lightest stop, as well as scenarios with R-parity violation and split supersymmetry. No significant excesses with respect to the Standard Model were observed and constraints are set on the SUSY parameter space.
Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the most interesting and comprehensively studied models for new physics beyond the Standard Model. If SUSY exists in nature the Large Hadron Collider will provide excellent opportunities to search for SUSY. SUSY discovery strategies of the ATLAS and CMS experiments are presented with a focus on early data. SUSY mass measurement techniques and determination of SUSY model parameters are also demonstrated.
Searches for R-parity violating supersymmetry performed at the H1 experiment are presented. Emphasis is put on searches for squarks, which may be resonantly produced at the HERA $ep$ collider in supersymmetry where R-parity is violated. The preliminary results presented here were obtained using data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 320 GeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 63 pb$^{-1}$.
This article presents recent results of searches for Supersymmetry using the CDF and the D$\not$O detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Described are the Tevatron searches for third generation scalar quarks and for supersymmetric signatures involving photons. All the reported results have been obtained assuming theoretical models in which $\mathcal{R}$-parity is conserved.
