This note is a written and extended version of the Shannon Lecture I gave at 2019 International Symposium on Information Theory. It gives an account of the original ideas that motivated the development of polar coding and discusses some new ideas for exploiting channel polarization more effectively in order to improve the performance of polar codes.

In this paper, we revisit the forward, backward and bidirectional Bahl-Cocke-Jelinek-Raviv (BCJR) soft-input soft-output (SISO) maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) decoding process of rate-1 binary convolutional codes. In this work, we propose a fully differentiable graph neural network (GNN)-based architecture for channel decoding and showcase a competitive decoding performance for various coding schemes, such as low-density parity-check (LDPC) and BCH codes. In this work, we consider efficient maximum-likelihood decoding of linear block codes for small-to-moderate block lengths. The presented approach is a branch-and-bound algorithm using the cutting-plane approach of Zhang and Siegel (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2012) for obtaining lower bounds. In this paper, we present a novel decoding algorithm of a polar code, named SC-Fano decoding, by appropriately incorporating the Fano sequential decoding into the standard successive-cancellation (SC) decoding. Inspired by recent advances in deep learning, we propose a novel iterative BP-CNN architecture for channel decoding under correlated noise. This architecture concatenates a trained convolutional neural network (CNN) with a standard belief-propagation (BP) decoder.
