We study the discovery prospect of different three body lepton number violating~(LNV) meson decays $M_{1}^{-}\to\ell_{1}^{-}\ell_{2}^{-}M_{2}^{+}$ in the framework of right handed~(RH) neutrino extended Standard Model~(SM). We consider a number of ongoing experiments, such as, NA62 and LHCb at CERN, Belle II at SuperKEK, as well as at the proposed future experiments, SHiP, MATHUSLA and FCC-ee. The RH Majorana neutrino $N$ mediating these meson decays provides a resonant enhancement of the rates, if the mass of $N$ lies in the range $(100\, \text{MeV}-6\, \text{GeV})$. We consider the effect of parent mesons velocity, as well as, the effect of finite detector size. Using the expected upper limits on the number of events for the LNV decay modes, $M_{1}^{-} \to\ell_1^{-}\ell_2^{-}π^{+}$~($M_{1}=B, B_c,D, D_{s}\,\text{and}\,K$), we analyze the sensitivity reach of the mixing angles $|V_{e N}|^{2}$, $|V_{μN}|^{2}$, $|V_{τN}|^{2}$, $|V_{e N}V_{μN}|$, $|V_{e N}V_{τN}|$ and $|V_{μN}V_{τN}|$ as a function of heavy neutrino mass $M_{N}$. We show that, inclusion of parent meson velocity can account to a large difference for active-sterile mixing, specially for $D$, $D_s$ meson decay at SHiP and $K$ meson decay at NA62. Taking into account the velocity of the $D_s$ meson, the future beam dump experiment SHiP can probe $|V_{eN}|^2 \sim 10^{-9}$. For RH neutrino mass in between 2 - 5 GeV, MATHUSLA can provide best sensitivity reach of active-sterile mixings.
We report on the recent results of searches for lepton-flavor-violating tau decays as well as lepton-number-violating B decays with the world-highest data samples accumulated at the Belle.
The possibility to discriminate between different operators contributing to lepton flavour violating tau decays is discussed within an effective field theory framework. Correlations among decay rates in different channels as well as differential distributions in many-body decays are considered. Recent developments in the determination of the hadronic form factors for $τ\rightarrow \ell ππ$ ($\ell = e, μ$) decays are incorporated in the analysis. The above issues are exemplified by considering a Higgs-like boson with lepton flavour violating couplings. Implications of the search for lepton flav…
A search for lepton flavor violating decays of the $τ$ lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a pseudoscalar meson has been performed using 339 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV by the BaBar detector at the SLAC PEP-II storage ring. No evidence of signal has been found, and upper limits on the branching fractions are set at $10^{-7}$ level.
We show that a detector placed near a beta-beam storage ring can probe lepton number violating interactions, as predicted by supersymmetric theories with R-parity non-conservation. In the presence of such interactions, nu_tau can be produced during beta-decay leading to tau leptons through weak interactions. Alternatively, electron neutrinos from beta-decay of radioactive ions can produce tau leptons in a nearby detector through these interactions. The muons from the decay of these tau leptons can be readily identified in a small iron calorimeter detector and will signal violation of R-parity.
In this work productions of charged and doubly charged scalars and their lepton flavor violating collider signals in the framework of littlest Higgs model at LHC are studied. In the allowed parameter region of the littlest Higgs model, the production rates of the scalars of littlest Higgs model via $pp \to ϕ^{++}ϕ^{-}$, $pp \to ϕ^+ϕ^-$ and $pp \to ϕ^{++}ϕ^{--}$ processes are calculated. We obtained that charged and doubly charged scalar pairs can be produced at LHC . Considering the possible lepton flavor violating decays of charged scalars found in literature, final state analysis is done. Th…
The present experimental status of searches for lepton flavor violating decays of the $τ$ lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon or a pseudoscalar meson is presented. The results obtained are from $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV by the \babar and the Belle detectors. In order to benefit from larger available datasets, the first $\babar-$Belle combinations of upper limits on the branching fractions of lepton flavor violating $τ$-decays are obtained.
We study the lepton flavor violating process, $e+ T \to τ+T'$, at a few GeV. This process can be studied by experiments directing GeV scale electron or positron beams on internal or fixed targets. We study the effects of some low energy lepton flavor violating interactions on this process. We study the sensitivities of this process on these low energy lepton flavor violating interactions and compare them to the sensitivities of lepton flavor violating $τ$ decay processes. Comparing with $τ$ decay processes, this process provides another way to study the lepton flavor violating effects with $e-…
We argue that lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays $M \to \ell_1 \overline \ell_2$ of quarkonium states $M$ with different quantum numbers could be used to put constraints on the Wilson coefficients of effective operators describing LFV interactions at low energy scales. We note that restricted kinematics of the two-body quarkonium decays allows us to select operators with particular quantum numbers, significantly reducing the reliance on the single operator dominance assumption that is prevalent in constraining parameters of the effective LFV Lagrangian. We shall also argue that studies of ra…
In this paper, the lepton flavor violating $τ\to \ell P(V)$ ($P,V= π^0, η, η^{\prime}, ρ^0, ω, ϕ$) and $τ\to 3\ell$ ($\ell = e, μ$) decays are studied in the framework of the type-III seesaw model, in which new triplet fermions with a zero hypercharge (Y=0) interact with ordinary lepton doublets via Yukawa couplings, and affect tree-level leptonic Z-boson couplings. We investigate the experimental bound from the leptonic Z decay to get contraint on the exsiting parameters space. We predict that the upper limits on the branching ratios of $τ\to \ell P(V)$ and $τ\to 3\ell$ can reach the experime…
The experimental observation of lepton-number violating processes would unambiguously indicate the Majorana nature of neutrinos. Various $ΔL$ = 2 processes for pseudoscalar meson $M_1$ decays to another pseudoscalar meson $M_2$ and two charged leptons $\ell_1$, $\ell_2$ ($M_1^+\to \ell_1^+\ell_2^+M_2^-$) have been studied extensively. Extending the existing literature on the studies of these kinds of processes, we consider the rare decays of heavy mesons to a vector meson or a pseudoscalar meson. These processes have not been searched for experimentally, while they may have sizable decay rates…
We argue that lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays $M \to \ell_1 \overline{\ell}_2$ of meson states $M$ with different quantum numbers could be used to put constraints on the Wilson coefficients of effective operators describing LFV interactions at low energy scales. We note that the restricted kinematics of the two-body decay of quarkonium or a heavy quark meson allows us to select operators with particular quantum numbers, significantly reducing the reliance on the $single \ operator \ dominance$ assumption that is prevalent in constraining parameters of the effective LFV Lagrangian. The discovery of a non-zero rate for a lepton flavor violating decay mode of the Higgs boson would definitely be an indication of New Physics. We review the prospects for such signal in Two Higgs Doublet Models, in particular for Higgs boson decays into $τμ$ final states. We will show that this scenario contains all the necessary ingredients to provide large flavor violating rates and still be compatible with the stringent limits from direct searches and low-energy flavor experiments.
Using a three neutrino framework we investigate bounds for the effective Majorana neutrino mass matrix. The mass measured in neutrinoless double beta decay is its (11) element. Lepton-number and -flavor violating processes sensitive to each element are considered and limits on branching ratios or cross sections are given. Those processes include $μ^- e^+$ conversion, $K^+ \to π^- μ^+ μ^+$ or recently proposed high-energy scattering processes at HERA. Including all possible mass schemes, the three solar solutions and other allowed possibilities, there is a total of 80 mass matrices. The obtaine…
Lepton flavor-violating processes offer interesting possibilities to probe new physics at multi-TeV scale. We discuss those in the framework of effective field theory, emphasizing the role of gluonic operators. Those operators are obtained by integrating out heavy quarks that are kinematically inaccessible at the scale where low-energy experiments take place and make those experiments sensitive to the couplings of lepton flavor changing neutral currents to heavy quarks. We discuss constraints on the Wilson coefficients of those operators from the muon conversion $μ^- + (A,Z) \to e^- + (A,Z)$ a…
We examine the lepton flavor-changing processes in R-parity violating MSSM. First, we update the constraints on the relevant R-violating couplings by using the latest data on the rare decays l_i->l_j γ. We find that the updated constraints are much stronger than the old ones from rare Z-decays at LEP. Then we calculate the processes Z->l_i l_j and γγ->l_i l_j. We find that with the updated constraints the R-violating couplings can still enhance the rates of these processes to the sensitivity of GigaZ and photon-photon collision options of the ILC.
We introduce a new method to search for the lepton-flavor violating Higgs decays $h\rightarrowτμ$ and $h\rightarrowτe$ in the leptonic $τ$ decay channel. In particular, the Standard Model background is estimated in a fully data driven way. The method exploits the asymmetry between electrons and muons in the final state of signal events and is sensitive to differences in the rates of the two decays. Using this method, we investigate the LHC sensitivity to these processes. With 20 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV, we expect a $3σ$ sensitivity for observing branching ratios of order $0…
We briefly review the lepton flavor violating Z-decays at GigaZ as a probe of supersymmetry by focusing on $Z \to \ell_i \overline{\ell}_j$ in two representative supersymmetric models: the minimal supersymmetric model without R-parity and the supersymmetric seesaw model. We conclude that under the current experimental constraints from LEP and $\ell_i\to \ell_j γ$, these rare decays can still be enhanced to reach the sensitivity of the GigaZ. Therefore, supersymmetry can be probed via these decays at GigaZ.
We argue that radiative lepton flavor violating (RLFV) decays $P \to γ\ell_1 \overline{\ell}_2$ of $P =B^0_q$, $\bar{D}^0$, and $K^0$ meson states are robust probes of new physics models. In particular, they could be used to put constraints on the Wilson coefficients of effective operators describing lepton flavor-changing neutral current interactions at low energy scales. We set up a generic framework for describing these transitions and review new physics constraints from $P \to \ell_1 \bar \ell_2$ decays. There is discussion of how RLFV transitions provide access to the operators that canno…
The lepton flavor violating process $J/ψ\to ll' (l\neq l')$ serves as an ideal place to probe the unparticle theory. Such process can only occur at loop level in the Standard model (SM), so that should be very suppressed, by contrast in unparticle scenario, it happens at tree level and its contribution may be sizable for practical measurement. Moreover, the BESIII will offer the largest database on $J/ψ$ which makes more accurate measurements possible. Furthermore, for such purely leptonic decays background is relatively low and signal would be cleaner. Our work carefully investigates the poss…
We perform the first search for lepton-number-violating B+->D-l+l'+ decays, where l and l' stand for e or mu, using 772 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. No evidence for these decays has been found. Assuming uniform three-body phase space distributions for the D-l+l+ decays, we set the following upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level: Br(B+ -> D-e+e+) < 2.6x10^-6, Br(B+ -> D-e+mu+) < 1.8x10^-6 and Br(B+ -> D-mu+mu+) < 1.0x10^-6.
We present a comprehensive update of the bounds on R-Parity violating supersymmetric couplings from lepton-flavour- and lepton-number-violating decay processes. We consider tau and mu decays as well as leptonic and semi-leptonic decays of mesons. We present several new bounds resulting from tau, eta and Kaon decays and correct some results in the literature concerning B-meson decays.
Now the bounds on the lepton-flavor violating (LFV) decay modes of tau lepton are being improved by the Belle experiment in the KEK B factory. In this paper the LFV decay of tau lepton is discussed in the supersymmetric seesaw model, using the current neutrino oscillation data.
We propose a new mechanism to explain neutrino masses with lepton number conservation, in which the Dirac neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level involving a dark matter candidate. In this model, branching ratios of lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson can be much larger than those of lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons. If lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson are observed at future collider experiments without detecting lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons, most of the models previously proposed for tiny neutrino masses are excl…
Simple "unitarity inspired" relations between two- and three-body lepton flavor violating decays are noted and discussed. In the absence of cancellations, the existing strong bounds on $μ\to 3e$ and $ μ\to eγγ$ severly constrain two-body lepton flavor violating decays.
We study the radiative lepton flavor violating l_i -> l_jγdecays in the two Higgs doublet model, respecting the Randall Sundrum scenario and estimate the contributions of the KK modes of left (right) handed charged lepton doublets (singlets) on the branching ratios. We observe that the branching ratios are sensitive to the contributions of the charged lepton KK modes.
We analyze four-lepton contact interactions that lead to lepton flavor violating processes, with violation of individual family lepton number but total lepton number conserved. In an effective Lagrangian framework, the assumption of gauge invariance leads to relations among branching ratios and cross sections of lepton flavor violating processes. In this paper, we work out how to use these relations systematically. We also study the consequences of loop-induced processes.
Supposing only Lorentz and the gauge invariances of the Lagrangian, we derive energy and angular distributions for $τ^\pm \to μ^\pm μ^\pm μ^\mp$ lepton flavor violating decay process. Using these results, we discuss methods to determine the parameters associated with the lepton flavor violating interactions.
We study the lepton flavor violating $μ^- \to e^{-}2γ$ decay induced by the mediation of heavy leptons such as the excited and fourth generation leptons. We have examined the effects of these leptons in the $μ^- \to e^{-}2γ$ decay. We have found that branching ratio of this decay is very sensitive to excited and fourth generation leptons. Furthermore, we have obtained the bounds on model parameters by using the current experimental limit of this decay.
Scalars with lepton number violating interactions decaying into lepton pairs, as those mediating the see-saw of type II, always include doubly-charged components. If these are observed at the LHC, their electro-weak quantum numbers can be determined through their leptonic decays in pair and single production.
Lepton flavor violating decays $Z \to μτ$ and $J/Ψ, Υ\to μτ$ are considered. It is shown that these decays can reach sizeable magnitudes if some specific lepton-flavor violating 4-fermion operators are generated by low scale quantum gravity effects, or by some other new physics at a TeV scale.
We summarized our report on leptonic flavor violating Higgs decay into mu + tau under the scheme of a generic supersymmetric standard model without R parity. With known experimental constraints imposed, important combinations of R-parity violating parameters which can give notable branching ratios are listed.
We propose a new mechanism to generate a lepton asymmetry based on the vacuum CP-violating phase transition (CPPT). This approach differs from classical thermal leptogenesis as a specific seesaw model, and its UV completion, need not be specified. The lepton asymmetry is generated via the dynamically realised coupling of the Weinberg operator during the phase transition. This mechanism provides a connection with low-energy neutrino observables.
We derive the upper bounds on certain products of R-parity- and lepton-flavor-violating couplings from the decays of the neutral $B$ meson into two charged leptons. These modes of $B^0$ decays can constrain the product combinations of the couplings with one or more heavy generation indices. We find that most of these bounds are stronger than the previous ones.
We study baryogenesis through lepton number violation in left-right symmetric models. In these models the lepton number and CP violating interactions of the triplet higgs scalars can give rise to lepton number asymmetry through non-equilibrium decays of the $SU(2)_L$ triplet higgs and the right handed neutrinos. This in turn generates baryon asymmetry during the electroweak anomalous processes.
In this paper we study lepton flavor violating semileptonic decays of heavy baryons in a framework of a model with large extra dimensions and a single generation . Resulting branching ratios for these decays mediated by Kaluza-Klein modes of photon and Z-boson are presented in a model-independent form.
We discuss the effects of lepton number violating interactions namely, R-parity violation and leptoquarks on top quark pair production at the upcoming $e^+ e^-$ linear colliders. Effects of SU(2) singlet, doublet and triplet leptoquark interactions are investigated. R-parity violating minimal supersymmetric standard model also allows certain kinds of lepton number violating interactions which are same as singlet leptoquarks with left-handed interactions. We have calculated the cross-section of $e^+ e^- \to t \bar t$ in presence of the above interactions. With conservative values of lepton numb…
In the supersymmetric model with local gauged baryon and lepton numbers(BLMSSM), the CP violating effects are considered to study the lepton electric dipole moment(EDM). The CP violating phases in BLMSSM are more than those in the standard model(SM) and can give large contributions. The analysis of the EDMs for the leptons $e,μ, τ$ is shown in this work. It is in favour of exploring the source of CP violation and probing the physics beyond SM.
We show that the predictions for lepton flavor violating decays, in the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos, change drastically when we include in the computation the high-energy phases present in the matrix of neutrino Yukawa couplings.
In the standard model (SM), lepton flavor violating (LFV) Higgs decay is absent at renormalizable level and thus it is a good probe to new physics. In this article we study a type of new physics that could lead to large LFV Higgs decay, i.e., a lepton-flavored dark matter (DM) model which is specified by a Majorana DM and scalar lepton mediators. Different from other similar models with similar setup, we introduce both left-handed and right-handed scalar leptons. They allow large LFV Higgs decay and thus may explain the tentative Br$(h\raτμ)\sim1\%$ experimental results from the LHC. In partic…
Exotic Higgs decays are promising channels to discover new physics in the near future. We present a simple model with a new light scalar that couples to the Standard Model through a charged lepton-flavor violating interaction. This can yield exciting new signatures, such as $h \to e^+ e^+ μ^-μ^-$, that currently have no dedicated searches at the Large Hadron Collider. We discuss this model in detail, assess sensitivity from flavor constraints, explore current constraints from existing multi-lepton searches, and construct a new search strategy to optimally target these exotic, lepton-flavor vio…
We study the contribution of the tensor unparticle mediation to the branching ratios of the radiative lepton flavor violating decays and predict a restriction region for free parameters of the scenario by using experimental upper limits. We observe that the branching ratios of the radiative lepton flavor violating decays are sensitive to the fundamental mass scales of the scenario and to the scale dimension of antisymmetric tensor unparticle. We obtain a more restricted set for the free parameters in the case of the μ\rightarrow e γdecay
We present a study of charged lepton mass matrix diagonalization in R-parity violating SUSY. The case in which the bilinear couplings $μ_i$ have large values is given special attention.
We demonstrate the existence of model independent one-to-one correspondence relations between different lepton flavor violating processes (LFV). Applying the criterion of naturalness, based on the idea of "custodial symmetry", we show that all the LFV processes, independently of specific mechanisms behind them, but with the same external leptons, have a priori comparable amplitudes modulo their kinematics and involved form factors.
Many models for physics beyond the Standard Model predict lepton-flavour violating decays of charged leptons at a level which may become observable very soon. In the present paper we investigate the decays of a Tau into three charged leptons in a generic way, based on effective-field-theory methods, where the relevant operators are classified according to their chirality structure. We work out the decay distributions and discuss phenomenological implications.
The dimension-six CP-violating SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1) invariant operators involving the tau lepton are studied. The constraints from the available experimental data on tau dipole moments are derived. Under the current constraints, the induced CP-violating effects could possibly be observed in tau -> 3πν_τ at the future tau-charm factory.
The most general model independent expressions for the CP-violating asymmetry, longitudinal, transversal and normal polarizations of leptons are derived. Application of these general results to the concrete models such as Standard model and three different types of two Higgs doublet model is discussed.
We predict the branching ratios of the lepton flavor violating Higgs decays H^0->e^{\pm} μ^{\pm}, H^0-> e^{\pm} τ^{\pm} and H^0->μ^{\pm} τ^{\pm} in the case that the lepton flavor violation is carried by the scalar unparticle mediation. We observe that their branching ratios are strongly sensitive to the unparticle scaling dimension and they can reach to the values of the order of $10^{-4}$, for the heavy lepton flavor case and for the small values of the scaling dimension.
A minimal particle content supersymmetric model with a discrete Z_3 symmetry, allowing lepton number violating terms, is studied. Within this model, the neutrino masses and mixing can be generated by lepton number violating couplings. Choosing parameters which correctly describe both the masses and mixing in the neutrino sector, we consider their repercussions in flavour violating radiative lepton decays, l --> l' gamma. Such decays have not been observed and, accordingly, soon to be improved, upper bounds on their branching ratios exist. We do not assume dominance of either the bilinear or tr…
We study the effects of dimension six effective operators on the flavour violating production and decay of leptons at the International Linear Collider. Analytic expressions for the cross sections, decay widths and asymmetries of all flavour changing processes will be presented, as well as an analysis of the feasibility of their observation at the ILC.
We report results obtained with the first complete event generator for electroweak baryon and lepton number violating interactions at supercolliders. We find that baryon number violation would be very difficult to establish, but lepton number violation can be seen provided at least a few hundred L violating events are available with good electron or muon identification in the energy range 10 GeV to 1 TeV.
We present the results of an extensive analysis of lepton flavour violating decays in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT). As lepton flavour violation is highly suppressed in the Standard Model by small neutrino masses, the LHT effects turn out to be naturally huge and could be seen in the near future experiments.
We calculate the cross sections of the baryon and lepton number violating processes. The proper valley method enables us to calculate the multi-boson processes, which have the possibility to observation. The mass corrections of the gauge boson, Higgs particle and top quark are evaluated and the group integration and the phase space integration are performed analytically and numerically.
We study the branching ratios of the lepton flavor violating processes μ-> e γ, τ-> e γand τ-> μγin the split fermion scenario, in the framework of the two Higgs doublet model. We observe that the branching ratios are relatively more sensitive to the compactification scale and the Gaussian widths of the leptons in the extra dimensions, for two extra dimensions and especially for the τ-> μγdecay.
We study the one-loop supersymmetric contributions to lepton-flavor violating $Z$ -boson decays in a fully left-right symmetric model. In addition to right-handed scalar neutrinos, the decays could receive important contributions from doubly-charged triplet Higgsinos which couple to leptons only. We find that the decay widths reach present experimental bounds and discuss mass constraints for the contributing supersymmetric partners.
The non-leptonic two body decays of D mesons are studied in the framework of an improved factorization approximation. The final state interaction effects are taken into account assuming them dominated by nearby resonances. The agreement with experimental data is quite good. CP-violating asymmetries are predicted.
If the massive neutrinos are identified to be the Majorana particles via a convincing measurement of the neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay, how to determine the Majorana CP-violating phases in the 3 x 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix U will become a desirable experimental question. The answer to this question is to explore all the possible lepton-number-violating (LNV) processes in which the Majorana phases really matter. In this paper we carry out a systematic study of CP violation in neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, whose CP-conserving parts involve six independent 0νββ-like mass terms <…
