We investigate the time evolution of the photon-detection probability at various output ports of an all-fiber coupled cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (cavity-QED) system. The setup consists of two atoms trapped separately in the field of two nanofiber cavities that are connected by a standard optical fiber. We find that the normal-mode picture captures well the main features of the dynamics. However, a more accurate description based on the diagonalization of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian reveals the origin of small yet significant features in the spontaneous emission spectra.
Direct optical excitation of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in nanodiamond by light via a nanofiber is of interest for all-fiber-integrated quantum applications. However, the background light induced by the excitation light via the nanofiber is problematic as it has the same optical wavelength as the emission light from the NV center. In this letter, we propose using a nanofiber Bragg cavity to address this problem. We numerically simulate and estimate the electric field of a nanodiamond induced by excitation light applied from an objective lens on a confocal microscope system, a nanofiber, an…
We have studied the coherent excitation of a strongly coupled QD/photonic crystal cavity system. Time-resolved reflectivity measurements show the vacuum Rabi oscillation of the dot in the cavity. Next, we considered the resonant driving of a cavity-detuned dot, which efficiently populates the cavity mode. This cavity-controlled read-out channel allows high-resolution single quantum dot spectroscopy. Autocorrelation measurements on the cavity mode show antibunching and suggest the use of the resonantly driven QD/cavity system as an on-demand source of single photons with potentially near-unity …
Indistinguishable single photons are necessary for quantum information processing applications. Resonant or quasiresonant excitation of single quantum dots provides greater single photon indistinguishability than incoherent pumping, but is also more challenging experimentally. Here, we demonstrate high signal to noise quasiresonant excitation of InP/InGaP quantum dots. The excitation is provided via second harmonic generated from a telecommunications wavelength laser resonant with the fundamental mode of a photonic crystal cavity, fabricated at twice the quantum dot transition wavelength. The …
Multipartite Quantum Correlations is one of the most relevant indicator of the quantumness of a system in many body systems. This remarkable feature is in general difficult to characterize and the known definitions are hard to measure. Besides the efforts dedicated to solve this problem, the question of which is the best approach remains open. In this work, we study the Global Quantum Discord, GQD, as a bipartite and multipartite measure. We also check the limits of this definitions and present an experimental scheme to determine the maximum of the GQD via the measurements of the system's exci…
We investigate the quantum interference effects of single photon transfer in two-atom cavity system caused by external excitation phase. In the proposed system, two identical atoms (with different positions in the optical cavity) are firstly prepared into a timed state by an external single photon field. During the excitation, the atoms grasp different phases which depend on the spatial positions of the atoms in the cavity. Due to strong resonant interaction between two atoms and optical cavity mode the absorbed input photon can be efficiently transferred from the atoms to the resonant cavity …
We report on the fast excitation of a single atom coupled to an optical cavity using laser pulses that are much shorter than all other relevant processes. The cavity frequency constitutes a control parameter that allows the creation of single photons in a superposition of two tunable frequencies. Each photon emitted from the cavity thus exhibits a pronounced amplitude modulation determined by the oscillatory energy exchange between the atom and the cavity. Our technique constitutes a versatile tool for future quantum networking experiments.
We propose a method to study the quantum nonlinearity and observe the multiphoton transitions in a multiatom CQED system. We show that by inducing simultaneously destructive quantum interference for the single-photon and two-photon excitations in the CQED system, it is possible to observe the direct three-photon excitation of the higher-order ladder states of the CQED system. We report an experiment with cold Rb atoms confined in an optical cavity and demonstrate such interference control of the multi-photon excitations of the CQED system. The observed nonlinear excitation of the CQED ladder s…
We compare the photoluminescence spectrum of an indium arsenide (InAs) quantum dot (QD) that is strongly coupled to a photonic crystal cavity under above band excitation (ABE) and quasi-resonant excitation (QRE). We show that off-resonant cavity feeding, which manifests itself in a bare cavity emission peak at the strong coupling point, is suppressed by as much as 40% under QRE relative to ABE. We attribute this suppression to a reduced probability of QD charging because electrons and holes are created in pairs inside the QD. We investigate the pump power dependence of the cavity feeding and s…
I theoretically study the behavior of strong pulses exciting emitters inside a cavity. The ensemble is supposed to be inhomogeneously broadened and the cavity matched finding application in quantum storage of optical or RF photons. My analysis is based on energy and pulse area conservation rules predicting important distortions for specific areas. It is well supported by numerical simulations. I propose a qualitative interpretation in terms of slow-light. The analogy with the free space situation is remarkable.
We study the photon generation from arbitrary initial state in cavity QED due to the combined action of the anti-rotating term present in the Rabi Hamiltonian and Lindblad-type dephasing. We obtain a simple set of differential equations describing this process and deduce useful formulae for the moments of the photon number operator, demonstrating analytically that the average photon number increases linearly with time in the asymptotic limit.
Whispering-gallery microcavity laser possesses ultralow threshold, whereas convenient free-space optical excitation and collection suffer from low efficiencies due to its rotational symmetry. Here we analytically study a three-dimensional microsphere coupled to a nano-sized scatterer in the framework of quantum optics. It is found that the scatterer is capable of coupling light in and out of the whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) without seriously degrading their high-Q properties, while the microsphere itself plays the role of a lens to focus the input beam on the scatterer and vice versa. Our a…
We study the quantum statistical properties of the collective excitations of an atomic ensemble inside a high-finesse cavity. In the large-detuning regime, it is found that the virtual photon exchange can induce a long-range interaction between atoms, which results in correlated excitations. In particular, the atomic blockade phenomenon occurs when the induced long-range interaction effectively suppresses the double atomic excitation, when the average photon number takes certain values, which makes the two nearest energy levels degenerate. We also show that quantum phase transitions occur in t…
We theoretically investigate an ensemble of three-level room-temperature atoms in a two-mode optical cavity, focusing on the case of counterpropagating light fields. We find that in the limit of large detunings the problem admits relatively simple and intuitive solutions. When a classical field drives one of the transitions, the system becomes equivalent to an ensemble of two-level atoms with suppressed Doppler broadening. In contrast, when the same transition is driven with a single photon, the system collectively behaves like a single two-level atom. This latter result is particularly releva…
Recent experiments have demonstrated an open system realization of the Dicke quantum phase transition in the motional degrees of freedom of an optically driven Bose-Einstein condensate in a cavity. Relevant collective excitations of this light-matter system are polaritonic in nature, allowing access to the quantum critical behavior of the Dicke model through light leaking out of the cavity. This opens the path to using photodetection based quantum optical techniques to study the dynamics and excitations of this elementary quantum critical system. We first discuss the photon flux observed at th…
A quantum dot coupled to an optical cavity has recently proven to be an excellent source of on-demand single photons. Typically, applications require simultaneous high efficiency of the source and quantum indistinguishability of the extracted photons. While much progress has been made both in suppressing background sources of decoherence and utilizing cavity-quantum electrodynamics to overcome fundamental limitations set by the intrinsic exciton-phonon scattering inherent in the solid-state platform, the role of the excitation pulse has been often neglected. We investigate quantitatively the f…
We study electronic excitations of a degenerate gas of atoms trapped in pairs in an optical lattice. Local dipole-dipole interactions produce a long lived antisymmetric and a short lived symmetric superposition of individual atomic excitations as the lowest internal on-site excitations. Due to the much larger dipole moment the symmetric states couple efficiently to neighbouring lattice sites and can be well represented by Frenkel excitons, while the antisymmetric dark states stay localized. Within a cavity only symmetric states couple to cavity photons inducing long range interactions to form …
We report the experimental demonstration of optomechanical light storage in a silica resonator. We use writing and readout laser pulses tuned to one mechanical frequency below an optical cavity resonance to control the coupling between the mechanical displacement and the optical field at the cavity resonance. The writing pulse maps a signal pulse at the cavity resonance to a mechanical excitation. The readout pulse later converts the mechanical excitation back to an optical pulse. The light storage lifetime is determined by the relatively long damping time of the mechanical excitation.
The ability to generate mode-engineered single photons to interface with disparate quantum systems is of importance for building a quantum network. Here we report on the generation of a pulsed, heralded single photon source with a sub-GHz spectral bandwidth that couples to indium arsenide quantum dots centered at 942 nm. The source is built with a type-II PPKTP down-conversion crystal embedded in a semi-confocal optical cavity and pumped with a 76 MHz repetition rate pulsed laser to emit collinear, polarization-correlated photon pairs resonant with a single quantum dot. In order to demonstrate…
We investigate the cavity excitation spectrum and the photon number distribution in a cavity QED system driven by a broadband squeezed vacuum. In an empty cavity, we show that only states with even number of photons can be measured under resonant condition since the squeezed vacuum consists of states with even number of photons only. When a single atom is trapped in the cavity, the strong coupling between the atom and cavity results in energy splittings of the system, and there exist two peaks in the cavity excitation spectrum at two-photon transition frequencies. At the central frequency, how…
We study the coupling between a photonic crystal cavity and an off-resonant quantum dot under resonant excitation of the cavity or the quantum dot. Linewidths of the quantum dot and the cavity as a function of the excitation laser power are measured. We show that the linewidth of the quantum dot, measured by observing the cavity emission, is significantly broadened compared to the theoretical estimate. This indicates additional incoherent coupling between the quantum dot and the cavity.
We study the resonant electronic excitation dynamics for ultracold atoms trapped in a deep optical lattice prepared in a Mott insulator state. Excitons in these artificial crystals are similar to Frenkel excitons in Noble atom or molecular crystals. They appear when the atomic excited state line width is smaller than the exciton band width generated by dipole-dipole coupling. When the atoms are placed within a cavity the electronic excitations and the quantized cavity mode get coupled. In the collective strong coupling regime excitations form two branches of cavity polaritons with Rabi splitti…
In quantum field theory, bare particles are dressed by a cloud of virtual particles to form physical particles. The virtual particles affect properties such as the mass and charge of the physical particles, and it is only these modified properties that can be measured in experiments, not the properties of the bare particles. The influence of virtual particles is prominent in the ultrastrong-coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), which has recently been realized in several condensed-matter systems. In some of these systems, the effective interaction between atom-like transitio…
The Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard (JCH) system describes a network of single-mode photonic cavities connected via evanescent coupling. Each cavity contains a single two level system which can be tuned in resonance with the cavity. Here we explore the behavior of single excitations (where an excitation can be either photonic or atomic) in the linear JCH system, which describes a coupled cavity waveguide. We use direct, analytic diagonalization of the Hamiltonian to study cases where inter-cavity coupling is either uniform or varies parabolically along the chain. Both excitations located in a single c…
We predict ground state cooling of a micro-mechanical oscillator, i.e. a vibrating end-mirror of an optical cavity, by resonant coupling of mirror vibrations to a narrow internal optical transition of an ensemble of two level systems. The particles represented by a collective mesoscopic spin model implement, together with the cavity, an efficient, frequency tailorable zero temperature loss channel which can be turned to a gain channel of pump. As opposed to the case of resolved-sideband cavity cooling requiring a small cavity linewidth, one can work here with low finesses and very small cavity…
Photonic condensates are complex systems exhibiting phase transitions due to the interaction with their molecular environment. Given the macroscopic number of molecules that form a reservoir of excitations, numerical simulations are expensive, even for systems with few cavity modes. We present a systematic construction of molecular excitation profiles with a clear hierarchical ordering, such that only modes in the lowest order in the hierarchy directly affect the cavity photon dynamics. In addition to a substantial gain in computational efficiency for simulations of photon dynamics, the explic…
We consider a superconducting qubit coupled to the nonstationary transmission line cavity with modulated frequency taking into account energy dissipation. Previously, it was demonstrated that in the case of a single nonadiabatical modulation of a cavity frequency there are two channels of a two-level system excitation which are due to the absorption of Casimir photons and due to the counterrotating wave processes responsible for the dynamical Lamb effect. We show that the parametric periodical modulation of the resonator frequency can increase dramatically the excitation probability. Remarkabl…
We report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation into the normal modes of an all-fiber coupled cavity-quantum-electrodynamics system. The interaction between atomic ensembles and photons in the same cavities, and that between the photons in these cavities and the photons in the fiber connecting these cavities, generates five non-degenerate normal modes. We demonstrate our ability to excite each normal mode individually. We study particularly the `cavity dark mode', in which the two cavities coupled directly to the atoms do not exhibit photonic excitation. Through the observat…
The single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide, coupled to a cavity embedded with a two-leval atom is analyzed. The single-photon transmission and reflection amplitudes, as well as the cavity and the atom excitation amplitudes, are solved exactly via a real-space approach. It is shown that the dissipation of the cavity and of the atom respectively affects distinctively on the transport properties of the photons, and on the relative phase between the excitation amplitudes of the cavity mode and the atom.
We formulate a Bardeen-Cooper-Schriffer (BCS) theory of quasiparticles in a degenerate Fermi gas strongly coupled to photons in a optical cavity. The elementary photonic excitations of the system are cavity polaritons, which consist of a cavity photon and an excitation of an atom within the Fermi sea. The excitation of the atom out of the Fermi sea leaves behind a hole, which together results in a loosely bound Cooper pair, allowing for the system to be written by a BCS wavefunction. As the density of the excitations is increased, the excited atom and hole become more strongly bound, crossing …
We demonstrate a single-photon collection efficiency of $(44.3\pm2.1)\%$ from a quantum dot in a low-Q mode of a photonic-crystal cavity with a single-photon purity of $g^{(2)}(0)=(4\pm5)\%$ recorded above the saturation power. The high efficiency is directly confirmed by detecting up to $962\pm46$ kilocounts per second on a single-photon detector on another quantum dot coupled to the cavity mode. The high collection efficiency is found to be broadband, as is explained by detailed numerical simulations. Cavity-enhanced efficient excitation of quantum dots is obtained through phonon-mediated ex…
We address the problem of two interacting atoms of different species inside a cavity and find the explicit solutions of the corresponding eigenvalues and eigenfunctions using a new invariant. This model encompasses various commonly used models. By way of example we obtain closed expressions for concurrence and purity as a function of time for the case where the cavity is prepared in a number state. We discuss the behaviour of these quantities and and their relative behaviour in the concurrence-purity plane.
The transmission spectrum of two dipole-dipole coupled atoms interacting with a single-mode optical cavity in strong coupling regime is investigated theoretically for the lower and higher excitation cases, respectively. The dressed states containing the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) are obtained by transforming the two-atom system into an effective single-atom one. We found that the DDI can enhance the effects resulting from the positive atom-cavity detunings but weaken them for the negative detunings cases for lower excitation, which can promote the spectrum exhibiting two asymmetric peaks …
We study the excitation dynamics of an inhomogeneously broadened spin ensemble coupled to a single cavity mode. The collective excitations of the spin ensemble can be described in terms of generalized spin waves and, in the absence of the cavity, the free evolution of the spin ensemble can be described as a drift in the wave number without dispersion. In this article we show that the dynamics in the presence of coupling to the cavity mode can be described solely by a modified time evolution of the wave numbers. In particular, we show that collective excitations with a well- defined wave number…
Core-excitations on different atoms are highly localized and therefore decoupled. By placing molecules in an X-ray cavity the core-transitions become coupled via the exchange of cavity photons and form delocalized hybrid light-matter excitations known as core-polaritons. We demonstrate these effects for the two inequivalent carbon atoms in 1,1-difluoroethylene. Polariton signatures in the X-ray absorption, two-photon absorption, and multidimensional four-wave mixing, signals are predicted.

We analyse the possibility to create two-mode spin squeezed states of two separate spin ensembles by inverting the spins in one ensemble and allowing spin exchange between the ensembles via a near resonant cavity field. We investigate the dynamics of the system using a combination of numerical and analytic calculations, and we obtain squeezing for a wide range of parameters. We also investigate the transfer of the squeezing properties to the cavity field and to an output mode from the cavity. Finally, we investigate how the squeezing is affected by effects of inhomogeneities which would be pre…
The control of light transmission through a Fabry-Perot cavity containing atoms is theoretically investigated, when the cavity mode beam and an intersecting control beam are both close to specific atomic resonances. A four-level atomic system is considered and its interaction with the cavity mode is studied by solving for the time dependent cavity field and atomic state populations. The conditions for optical bistability of the atom-cavity system are obtained in steady state limit. For an ensemble of atoms in the cavity mode, the response of the intra-cavity light intensity to the intersecting…
We present a detailed study to analyse the Dicke quantum phase transition within the thermodynamic limit for an optomechanically driven Bose-Einstein condensates in a cavity. The photodetection-based quantum optical measurements have been performed to study the dynamics and excitations of this optomechanical Dicke system. For this, we discuss the eigenvalue analysis, fluorescence spectrum and the homodyne spectrum of the system. It has been shown that the normal phase is negligibly affected by the mechanical mode of the mirror while it has a significant effect in the superradiant phase. We hav…

The identification of new solid-state defect qubit candidates in widely used semiconductors has the potential to enable the use of nanofabricated devices for enhanced qubit measurement and control operations. In particular, the recent discovery of optically active spin states in silicon carbide thin films offers a scalable route for incorporating defect qubits into on-chip photonic devices. Here we demonstrate the use of 3C silicon carbide photonic crystal cavities for enhanced excitation of color center defect spin ensembles in order to increase measured photoluminescence signal count rates, …
Vacuum induced coherence in a strongly coupled cavity consisting of a three-level system is studied theoretically. The effects of the strong coupling to electromagnetic field vacuum are examined by solution of an open-system quantum master equation. The numerical results show that the system exhibits population trapping, and the numerical results are interpreted with analytical expressions derived from a new basis in the weak excitation regime. We further show that the generated effects can be probed with weak external fields. Moreover, it is shown that the induced coherence can be controlled …
Vacuum excitation by time-varying boundary conditions is not only of fundamental importance but also has recently been confirmed in a laboratory experiment. In this paper, we study the vacuum excitation of a scalar field by the instantaneous appearance and disappearance of a both-sided Dirichlet wall in the middle of a 1D cavity, as toy models of bifurcating and merging spacetimes, respectively. It is shown that the energy flux emitted positively diverges on the null lines emanating from the appearance and disappearance events, which is analogous to the result of Anderson and DeWitt. This resu…
We present a microscopic theory describing the stimulated scattering of intersubband polariton excitations in a microcavity-embedded two-dimensional electron gas. In particular, we consider the polariton scattering induced by the spontaneous emission of optical phonons. Our theory demonstrates the possibility of final-state stimulation for the scattering of such composite excitations, accounting for the deviations from perfect bosonicity occurring at high excitation densities. By using realistic parameters for a GaAs semiconductor system, we predict how to achieve a quantum degenerate regime, …
A major challenge in generating single photons with a single emitter is to excite the emitter while avoiding laser leakage into the collection path. Ideally, any scheme to suppress this leakage should not result in a loss in efficiency of the single-photon source. Here, we investigate a scheme in which a single emitter, a semiconductor quantum dot, is embedded in a microcavity. The scheme exploits the splitting of the cavity mode into two orthogonally-polarised modes: one mode is used for excitation, the other for collection. By linking experiment to theory, we show that the best population in…
We analyze an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a high-Q optical cavity driven by a feeble optical field, a situation formally analogous to the central paradigm of cavity optomechanics [Brennecke et al., Science, 322, 235 (2008)]. We account for two-body interactions via a two-fluid model that retains the intuitive appeal of the optomechanical two-mode description. The Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of this system comprises a gapped upper branch and a lower branch that can include an unstable excitation mode.
The time-reversal mirror (TRM) prescribes the reverse playback of a signal to focalize an acoustic excitation as a Loschmidt echo. In the quantum domain, the perfect inverse filter (PIF) processes this signal to ensure an exact reversion provided that the excitation originated outside the cavity delimited by the transducers. We show that PIF takes a simple form when the initial excitation is created inside this cavity. This also applies to the acoustical case, where it corrects the TRM and improves the design of an acoustic bazooka. We solve an open chaotic cavity modeling a quantum bazooka an…
We investigate a double cavity optomechanical system(OMS) generating single and double Fano resonance(multi Fano). By altering a single parameter, the tunneling rate $g$ of the middle mirror, we are able to switch between single and double Fano line shapes. The first spectral line shape is stronger in the case of multi Fano than in the case of single Fano. Also the behaviour of steady state value of the displacement of the middle mirror with respect to $g$, heavily influences the behaviour of double Fano lines in our scheme. This tunability along-with using a single pump and signal/probe laser…
