We study bosons in a one-dimensional hard-wall box potential. In the case of contact interaction, the system is exactly solvable by the Bethe ansatz, as first shown by Gaudin in 1971. Although contained in the exact solution, the boundary energy in the thermodynamic limit for this problem is only approximately calculated by Gaudin, who found the leading order result at weak repulsion. Here we derive an exact integral equation that enables one to calculate the boundary energy in the thermodynamic limit at an arbitrary interaction. We then solve such an equation and find the asymptotic results for the boundary energy at weak and strong interactions. The analytical results obtained from the Bethe ansatz are in agreement with the ones found by other complementary methods, including quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We study the universality of the boundary energy in the regime of a small gas parameter by making a comparison with the exact solution for the hard rod gas.
We show that the system of Gaudin's equations for quasimomenta k_{j}, which describes a one-dimensional system of spinless point bosons with zero boundary conditions, has the unique real solution for each set of quantum numbers n_{j}.
We consider trapped bosons with contact interactions as well as Coulomb repulsion or gravitational attraction in one spatial dimension. The exact ground state energy and wave function are identified in closed form together with a rich phase diagram, unveiled by Monte Carlo methods, with crossovers between different regimes. A trapped McGuire quantum soliton describes the attractive case. Weak repulsion results in an incompressible Laughlin-like fluid with flat density, well reproduced by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with long-range interactions. Higher repulsion induces Friedel oscillation and …
The quantum dynamics of a one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junction is studied by solving the time-dependent many-boson Schrödinger equation numerically exactly. Already for weak interparticle interactions and on short time scales, the commonly-employed mean-field and many-body methods are found to deviate substantially from the exact dynamics. The system exhibits rich many-body dynamics like enhanced tunneling and a novel equilibration phenomenon of the junction depending on the interaction, attributed to a quick loss of coherence.
We consider a system of interacting non-relativistic bosons confined to a one-dimensional ring in the presence of a synthetic gauge field induced by a rotating barrier. Interactions are introduced as a constraint in field space, and the barrier is modeled by general boundary conditions. Within this setup, we compute the effective action and investigate the profile of the ground state and its sensitivity from rotational velocity and the properties of the barrier.
We carry out an extensive study of the phase diagrams of the extended Bose Hubbard model, with a mean filling of one boson per site, in one dimension by using the density matrix renormalization group and show that it contains Superfluid (SF), Mott-insulator (MI), density-wave (DW) and Haldane-insulator (HI) phases. We show that the critical exponents and central charges for the HI-DW, MI-HI and SF-MI transitions are consistent with those for models in the two-dimensional Ising, Gaussian, and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) universality classes, respectively; and we suggest that the SF-HI…
As is known, an elementary excitation of a many-particle system with boundaries is not characterized by a definite momentum. We obtain the formula for the quasimomentum of an elementary excitation for a one-dimensional system of $N$ spinless point bosons under zero boundary conditions (BCs). In this case, we use the Gaudin's solutions obtained with the help of the Bethe ansatz. We have also found the dispersion laws of the particle-like and hole-like excitations under zero BCs. They coincide with the known dispersion laws obtained for periodic BCs.
A zero range approach is used to model resonant two-body interactions between three identical bosons. A dimensionless phase parametrizes the three-body boundary condition while the scattering length enters the Bethe-Peierls boundary condition. The model is solved exactly at zero energy for any value of the scattering length, positive or negative. From this solution, an analytical expression for the rate of three-body recombination to the universal shallow dimer is extracted.
We investigate the formation of self-bound quantum droplets in a one-dimensional binary mixture of bosonic atoms, applying the method of numerical diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian. The excitation spectra and ground-state pair correlations signal the formation of a few-boson droplet when crossing the region of critical inter-species interactions. The self-binding affects the rotational excitations, displaying a change in the energy dispersion from negative curvature, associated with superfluidity in the many-body limit, to a nearly parabolic curvature indicative of rigid body rotation. W…
We consider a bosonic two-legged ladder whose two-band energy spectrum can be tuned in the presence of a uniform gauge field, to four distinct scenarios: degenerate or non-degenerate ground states with gapped or gapless energy bands. We couple the ladder to two baths at different temperatures and chemical potentials and analyze the efficiency and power generated in the linear as well as nonlinear response regime. Our results, obtained with the Green's function method, show that the maximum performance efficiency and generated power are strongly dependent on the type of the underlying energy sp…
We study the dynamical properties of a few bosons confined in an one-dimensional split hard wall trap with the interaction strength varying from the weakly to strongly repulsive regime. The system is initially prepared in one side of the double well by setting the barrier strength of the split trap to be infinity and then the barrier strength is suddenly changed to a finite value. Both exact diagonalization method and Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) approximation are used to study the dynamical evolution of the initial system. The exact results based on exact diagonaliztion verify the enhancement of …
We investigate the behaviour of hard-core bosons in one- and two-dimensional flat band systems, the chequerboard and the kagomé lattice and one-dimensional analogues thereof. The one dimensional systems have an exact local reflection symmetry which allows for exact results. We show that above the critical density an additional particle forms a pair with one of the other bosons and that the pair is localised. In the two-dimensional systems exact results are not available but variational results indicate a similar physical behaviour.
We show that Bogoliubov equations in one-dimensional systems with piecewise constant potentials can be always solved. In particular, we analyze in detail the case where the condensate wavefunction is a real-valued function, and give the explicit expressions for wavefunctions of Bogoliubov excitations. By means of these solutions, we consider transmission and reflection properties of Bogoliubov excitations for two types of potential, namely, a rectangular barrier and a potential step. The results yield simple and exact examples of anomalous tunneling effect and quantum evaporation.
We develop a new method that allows us to map models of interacting fermions onto bosonic models describing collective excitations in an arbitrary dimension. This mapping becomes exact in the thermodynamic continuous time limit. The boson models can be written either in the form of a model of non-interacting bosons in a fluctuating auxiliary field or in the form of a superfield theory of interacting bosons. We show how one can study the latter version using perturbation theory. Using the developed diagrammatic technique we compared the first two orders of perturbation theory with the correspon…
The exact solutions of a one-dimensional mixture of spinor bosons and spinor fermions with $δ$-function interactions are studied. Some new sets of Bethe ansatz equations are obtained by using the graded nest quantum inverse scattering method. Many interesting features appear in the system. For example, the wave function has the $SU(2|2)$ supersymmetry. It is also found that the ground state of the system is partial polarized, where the fermions form a spin singlet state and the bosons are totally polarized. From the solution of Bethe ansatz equations, it is shown that all the momentum, spin an…
Exact diagonalization techniques are a powerful method for studying many-body problems. Here, we apply this method to systems of few bosons in an optical lattice, and use it to demonstrate the emergence of interesting quantum phenomena like fragmentation and coherence. Starting with a standard Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we first revise the characterization of the superfluid to Mott insulator transitions. We then consider an inhomogeneous lattice, where one potential minimum is made much deeper than the others. The Mott insulator phase due to repulsive on-site interactions then competes with the…
We study the ground-state properties of an atomic-molecular boson conversion model through an exact Bethe Ansatz solution. For a certain range of parameter choices, we prove that the ground-state Bethe roots lie on the positive real-axis. We then use a continuum limit approach to obtain a singular integral equation characterising the distribution of these Bethe roots. Solving this equation leads to an analytic expression for the ground-state energy. The form of the expression is consistent with the existence of a line of quantum phase transitions, which has been identified in earlier studies. …
