Optical and electrical properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are strongly determined by their microstructure. Consequently, the visualization of spatial structural variations is of paramount importance for future applications. Here we demonstrate how grain boundaries, crystal orientation, and strain fields can unambiguously be identified with combined lateral force microscopy (LFM) and transverse shear microscopy (TSM) for CVD-grown tungsten disulfide (WS2) monolayers, on length scales that are relevant for optoelectronic applications. Further, angle-dependent TSM measurements enable us to acquire the fourth-order elastic constants of monolayer WS2 experimentally. Our results facilitate high-throughput and nondestructive microstructure visualization of monolayer TMDCs, insights into their elastic properties, thus providing an accessible tool to support the development of advanced optoelectronic devices based on such two-dimensional semiconductors.
The microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of friction stir welded (FSW) AA6061 aluminum alloys were investigated. Dynamic recrystallized structures were observed and grain sizes of nugget zone (NZ), thermomechanically-affected zone (TMAZ), heat-affected zone (HAZ), and base material (BM) were different. Hardness test indicated that the minimum and maximum hardness values wereobtained in the HAZ and BM, respectively. Tensile results showed that fracture occurred in the relatively weak regions in between TMAZ and HAZ. Polarization tests illustrated that the FSW process im…
Polycrystalline diamond films with systematic change in microstructure that varies from microcrystalline to nanocrystalline structure are synthesized on Si by hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The morphology and structural properties of the grown diamond films are analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The average roughness and grain size of the diamond films decrease with increase in CH4 to H2 ratio from 0.5 to 3 %. Also, structural disorder in these diamond films increases with decreas…
The response of materials to dynamical, or shock, loading is important to planetary science, aerospace engineering, and energetic materials. Thermal-activated processes, including chemical reactions and phase transitions, are significantly accelerated by the localization of the energy deposited into hotspots. These results from the interaction of a supersonic wave with the materials microstructure and are governed by complex, coupled processes, including the collapse of porosity, interfacial friction, and localized plastic deformation. These mechanisms are not fully understood and today we lac…
We have studied the internal friction and the relative change in the speed of sound of amorphous diamond-like carbon films prepared by pulsed-laser deposition from 0.3 K to room temperature. Like the most of amorphous solids, the internal friction below 10 K exhibits a temperature independent plateau. The values of the internal friction plateau, however, are slightly below the universal ``glassy range'' where the internal frictions of almost all amorphous solids lie. Similar observations have been made in our earlier studies in the thin films of amorphous silicon and amorphous germanium, and t…
We provide a simple and intuitive explanation for the interlayer sliding energy landscape of metal dichalcogenides. Based on the recently introduced registry index (RI) concept, we define a purely geometrical parameter which quantifies the degree of interlayer commensurability in the layered phase of molybdenum disulphide (2HMoS2). A direct relation between the sliding energy landscape and the corresponding interlayer registry surface of 2H-MoS2 is discovered thus marking the registry index as a computationally efficient means for studying the tribology of complex nanoscale material interfaces…
Two different precipitate hardening aluminium alloys processed by friction stir welding were investigated. The microstructure and the hardness of the as delivered materials were compared to that of the weld nugget. Transmission electron microscopy observations combined with three-dimensional atom probe analyses clearly show that β;" precipitates dissolved in the nugget of the Al-Mg-Si giving rise to some supersaturated solid solution. It is shown that the dramatic softening of the weld could be partly recovered by post-welding ageing treatments. In the Al-Mg-Sc alloy, Al3Sc precipitate size an…
An overview of computer simulations of tribology is presented. The chapter begins with a brief overview of simulation techniques and the special requirements for simulations of tribological processes. Then simple one-dimensional models of friction between crystalline surfaces are introduced to illustrate general features of friction, such as the importance of metastability and the effect of commensurability. Next two- and three-dimensional studies of dry sliding between crystalline surfaces are described, and compared to scanning probe experiments and measurements of the friction on adsorbed m…
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides are potential candidates for ultrathin solid-state lubricants in low-dimensional systems owing to their flatness, high in-plane mechanical strength, and low shear interlayer strength. Yet, the effects of surface topography and surface chemistry on the tribological properties of 2D layers are still unclear. In this work, we performed a comparative investigation of nanoscale tribological properties of ultra-thin highly-ordered PtSe2 layers deposited on the sapphire substrates with the in-plane and out-of-plane crystallographic orientation of …

The statement of the title is shown by numerical simulation of homogeneously sheared packings of frictionless, nearly rigid beads in the quasistatic limit. Results coincide for steady flows at constant shear rate γ in the limit of small γ and static approaches, in which packings are equilibrated under growing deviator stresses. The internal friction angle ϕ, equal to 5.76 $\pm$ 0.22 degrees in simple shear, is independent on the average pressure P in the rigid limit. It is shown to stem from the ability of stable frictionless contact networks to form stress-induced anisotr…
Coarse-grained, metallic materials undergo microstructure refinement during tribological loading. This in turn results in changing tribological properties, so understanding deformation under tribological load is mandatory when designing tribological systems. Single-trace experiments were conducted to understand the initiation of deformation mechanisms acting in various tribological systems. The main scope of this work was to investigate the influence of normal and friction forces as well as crystal orientations on the dominating deformation mechanism in a face-centred cubic concentrated solid …
The structure and mechanical properties of a simple two-dimensional model of a cohesive powder are investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. Micromechanical ingredients involve elasticity, friction, a short range attraction and, possibly, rolling resistance (RR) in contacts. The microstructure of the cohesive packing varies according to the assembling procedure, from rather densely packed if isolated particles are directly compressed to much looser if the formation of large aggregates is allowed prior to compression. A crucial parameter is the ratio P*= Pa/F0 of applied pressure P, actin…
Two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently attracted tremendous interest as potential valleytronic and nano-electronic materials, in addition to being well-known as excellent lubricants in the bulk. The interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling and low frequency phonon modes, and how they evolve with the number of layers, are important for both the mechanical and electrical properties of 2D TMDs. Here we uncover the ultra-low frequency interlayer breathing and shear modes in few-layer MoS2 and WSe2, prototypical layered TMDs, using both Raman spectroscopy …
