IoT Supply Chain Security: Overview, Challenges, and the Road Ahead

Muhammad Junaid Farooq, Quanyan Zhu

英文摘要：

Supply chain is emerging as the next frontier of threats in the rapidly evolving IoT ecosystem. It is fundamentally more complex compared to traditional ICT systems. We analyze supply chain risks in IoT systems and their unique aspects, discuss research challenges in supply chain security, and identify future research directions.

The New Threats of Information Hiding: the Road Ahead

Compared to cryptography, steganography is a less discussed domain. However, there is a recent trend of exploiting various information hiding techniques to empower malware, for instance to bypass security frameworks of mobile devices or to exfiltrate sensitive data. This is mostly due to the need to counteract increasingly sophisticated security mechanisms, such as code analysis, runtime countermeasures, or real-time traffic inspection tools. In this perspective, this paper presents malware exploiting information hiding in a broad sense, i.e., it does not focus on classical covert channels, bu…

Vessels Cybersecurity: Issues, Challenges, and the Road Ahead

Vessels cybersecurity is recently gaining momentum, as a result of a few recent attacks to vessels at sea. These recent attacks have shacked the maritime domain, which was thought to be relatively immune to cyber threats. The cited belief is now over, as proved by recent mandates issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). According to these regulations, all vessels should be the subject of a cybersecurity risk analysis, and technical controls should be adopted to mitigate the resulting risks. This initiative is laudable since, despite the recent incidents, the vulnerabilities and…

Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien)（维也纳工业大学（TU Wien））；University of Cyprus（塞浦路斯大学）；ETH Zürich（苏黎世联邦理工学院）；Hanyang University（汉阳大学）

Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been rapidly adopted by smart Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) due to their powerful decision-making capabilities. However, they are vulnerable to various security and reliability threats, at both hardware and software levels, that compromise their accuracy. These threats get aggravated in emerging edge ML devices that have stringent constraints in terms of resources (e.g., compute, memory, power/energy), and that therefore cannot employ costly security and reliability measures. Security, reliability, and vulnerability mitigation t…

"On the Road" - Reflections on the Security of Vehicular Communication Systems

Vehicular communication (VC) systems have recently drawn the attention of industry, authorities, and academia. A consensus on the need to secure VC systems and protect the privacy of their users led to concerted efforts to design security architectures. Interestingly, the results different project contributed thus far bear extensive similarities in terms of objectives and mechanisms. As a result, this appears to be an auspicious time for setting the corner-stone of trustworthy VC systems. Nonetheless, there is a considerable distance to cover till their deployment. This paper ponders on the ro…
