When thermal rate equations are derived for the evolution of slow variables, it is often practical to parametrize the right-hand side with chemical potentials. To close the system, the chemical potentials are subsequently re-expressed in terms of the slow variables, which involves the consideration of a "susceptibility". Here we study a non-relativistic situation in which chemical potentials are large compared with the temperature, as is relevant for late-time pair annihilations in dark matter freeze-out. An order-of-magnitude estimate and a lattice simulation are presented for a susceptibility dominated by bound states of stop-like mediators. After this "calibration", the formalism is applied to a model with Majorana singlet dark matter, confirming that masses up to the multi-TeV domain are viable in the presence of sufficient (though not beyond a limit) mass degeneracy in the dark sector.
Dark matter can capture in neutron stars from scattering off ultra-relativistic electrons. We present a method to calculate the capture rate on degenerate targets with ultra-relativistic momenta in a compact astronomical object. Our treatment accounts for the target momentum and the Fermi degeneracy of the system. We derive scaling relations for scattering with relativistic targets and confirm consistency with the non-relativistic limit and Lorentz invariance. The potential observation of kinetic heating of neutron stars has a larger discovery reach for dark matter-lepton interactions than con…
Dark matter models with light mediators featuring sizable interactions among dark particles enjoy an increasing attention in the model building community due to the elegance with which they can potentially explain the scaling relations governing galactic halos and clusters of galaxies. In the present work we continue our study of such models using non-relativistic and potential non-relativistic effective field theories (NREFTs and pNREFTs) and explore the properties of a Yukawa-type model with scalar and pseudoscalar interactions between a low-energetic scalar mediator and heavy dark matter fe…
Dark matter can capture in neutron stars and heat them to observable luminosities. We study relativistic scattering of dark matter on highly degenerate electrons. We develop a Lorentz invariant formalism to calculate the capture probability of dark matter that accounts for the relativistic motion of the target particles and Pauli exclusion principle. We find that the actual capture probability can be five orders of magnitude larger than the one estimated using a nonrelativistic approach. For dark matter masses $10~{\rm eV}\textup{--}10~{\rm PeV}$, neutron star heating complements and can be mo…
In this paper we present a novel mechanism for producing the observed Dark Matter(DM) relic abundance during the First Order Phase Transition (FOPT) in the early universe. We show that the bubble expansion with ultra-relativistic velocities can lead to the abundance of DM particles with masses much larger than the scale of the transition. We study this non-thermal production mechanism in the context of a generic phase transition and the electroweak phase transition. The application of the mechanism to the Higgs portal DM as well as the signal in the Stochastic Gravitational Background are disc…
The non-relativistic effective theory of dark matter-nucleon interactions depends on 28 coupling strengths for dark matter spin up to 1/2. Due to the vast parameter space of the effective theory, most experiments searching for dark matter interpret the results assuming that only one of the coupling strengths is non-zero. On the other hand, dark matter models generically lead in the non-relativistic limit to several interactions which interfere with one another, therefore the published limits cannot be straightforwardly applied to model predictions. We present a method to determine a rigorous u…
We investigate the interactions of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS) with nucleons in nuclear medium by taking into account the effect of nuclear dynamics. We derive the nonrelativistic effective operators starting from the relativistic mean-field approximation. Certain interactions receive non-negligible corrections, which may significantly change the sensitivities of WIMP-nucleus scattering cross section to these effective operators.

When dark matter particles only feebly interact with plasma constituents in the early universe, they never reach thermal equilibrium. As opposed to the freeze-out mechanism, where the dark matter abundance is determined at $T \ll M$, the energy density of a feebly interacting state builds up and increases over $T \gtrsim M$. In this work, we address the impact of the high-temperature regime on the dark matter production rate, where the dark and Standard Model particles are ultra-relativistic and nearly light-like. In this setting, multiple soft scatterings, as well as $2 \to 2$ processes, are …
We explore relativistic freeze-in production of scalar dark matter in gauged $B-L$ model, where we focus on the production of dark matter from the decay and annihilation of Standard Model (SM) and $B-L$ Higgs bosons. We consider the Bose-Einstein (BE) and Fermi-Dirac (FD) statistics, along with the thermal mass correction of the SM Higgs boson in our analysis. We show that in addition to the SM Higgs boson, the annihilation and decay of the $B-L$ scalar can also contribute substantially to the dark matter relic density. Potential effects of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) and thermal mass…

We study a scenario where both dark matter and heavy right handed neutrino (RHN) responsible for leptogenesis acquire masses by crossing the relativistic bubble walls formed as a result of a TeV scale supercooled first order phase transition (FOPT). While this leads to a large out-of-equilibrium abundance of right handed neutrino inside the bubble sufficient to produce the required lepton asymmetry, the dark matter being lighter can still remain in equilibrium with its relic being set by subsequent thermal freeze-out. A classical conformal symmetry ensures the origin of mass via FOPT induced b…
We consider, in general terms, the possible parameter space of thermal dark matter candidates. We assume that the dark matter particle is fundamental and was in thermal equilibrium in a hidden sector with a temperature $T'$, which may differ from that of the Standard Model temperature, $T$. The candidates lie in a region in the $T'/T$ vs. $m_{\rm dm}$ plane, which is bounded by both model-independent theoretical considerations and observational constraints. The former consists of limits from dark matter candidates that decoupled when relativistic (the relativistic floor) and from those that de…
We show that electron recoils induced by non-relativistic Dark Matter interactions can fit well the recently reported Xenon1T excess, if they are mediated by a light pseudo-scalar in the MeV range. This is due to the favorable momentum-dependence of the resulting scattering rate, which partially compensates the unfavorable kinematics that tends to strongly suppress keV electron recoils. We study the phenomenology of the mediator and identify the allowed parameter space of the Xenon1T excess which is compatible with all experimental limits. We also find that the anomalous magnetic moments $(g-2…
Quantum mechanics allows for states in macroscopic superpositions, but they ordinarily undergo rapid decoherence due to interactions with their environment. A system that only interacts gravitationally, such as an arrangement of dark matter (DM), may exhibit slow decoherence. In this Letter, we compute the decoherence rate of a quantum object within general relativity, focusing on superposed metric oscillations; a rare quantum general relativistic result. For axion DM in a superposition of the field's phase, we find that DM in the Milky Way is robust against decoherence, while a spatial superp…
Usually information from early eras such as reheating is hard to come by. In this paper we argue that, given the right circumstances, right-handed sterile neutrinos decaying to left-handed active ones at relatively late times can carry information from reheating by propagating freely over the thermal history. For not too small mixing angles, suitable right-handed neutrino masses are around ${\cal O}$(MeV-GeV). We identify the typical spectra and argue that they provide information on the ratio of the inflaton mass to the reheating temperature. This primordial neutrino signal can be strong enou…
We consider a cosmological scenario where a relativistic particle and a stable massive particle are simultaneously produced from the decay of a late-decaying particle after Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis but before matter-radiation equality. The relativistic and massive particles behave as dark radiation and warm dark matter, respectively. Due to a common origin, the warmness and abundances are closely related. We refer to the models that lead to such a scenario as Common Origin of Warm and Relativistic Decay Products (COWaRD). We show that COWaRD predicts a correlation between the amount of dark ra…
