Sarcasm Detection has enjoyed great interest from the research community, however the task of predicting sarcasm in a text remains an elusive problem for machines. Past studies mostly make use of twitter datasets collected using hashtag based supervision but such datasets are noisy in terms of labels and language. To overcome these shortcoming, we introduce a new dataset which contains news headlines from a sarcastic news website and a real news website. Next, we propose a hybrid Neural Network architecture with attention mechanism which provides insights about what actually makes sentences sarcastic. Through experiments, we show that the proposed model improves upon the baseline by ~ 5% in terms of classification accuracy.

The existence of multiple datasets for sarcasm detection prompts us to apply transfer learning to exploit their commonality. The adversarial neural transfer (ANT) framework utilizes multiple loss terms that encourage the source-domain and the target-domain feature distributions to be similar while optimizing for domain-specific performance. However, these objectives may be in conflict, which can lead to optimization difficulties and sometimes diminished transfer. We propose a generalized latent optimization strategy that allows different losses to accommodate each other and improves training d…
In this paper, we propose hybrid building/floor classification and floor-level two-dimensional location coordinates regression using a single-input and multi-output (SIMO) deep neural network (DNN) for large-scale indoor localization based on Wi-Fi fingerprinting. The proposed scheme exploits the different nature of the estimation of building/floor and floor-level location coordinates and uses a different estimation framework for each task with a dedicated output and hidden layers enabled by SIMO DNN architecture. We carry out preliminary evaluation of the performance of the hybrid floor class…
Since their inception, transformer-based language models have led to impressive performance gains across multiple natural language processing tasks. For Arabic, the current state-of-the-art results on most datasets are achieved by the AraBERT language model. Notwithstanding these recent advancements, sarcasm and sentiment detection persist to be challenging tasks in Arabic, given the language's rich morphology, linguistic disparity and dialectal variations. This paper proffers team SPPU-AASM's submission for the WANLP ArSarcasm shared-task 2021, which centers around the sarcasm and sentiment p…

We propose a two-stage hybrid approach with neural networks as the new feature construction algorithms for bankcard response classifications. The hybrid model uses a very simple neural network structure as the new feature construction tool in the first stage, then the newly created features are used as the additional input variables in logistic regression in the second stage. The model is compared with the traditional one-stage model in credit customer response classification. It is observed that the proposed two-stage model outperforms the one-stage model in terms of accuracy, the area under …
Machine learning-based applications are increasingly prevalent in IoT devices. The power and storage constraints of these devices make it particularly challenging to run modern neural networks, limiting the number of new applications that can be deployed on an IoT system. A number of compression techniques have been proposed, each with its own trade-offs. We propose a hybrid network which combines the strengths of current neural- and tree-based learning techniques in conjunction with ternary quantization, and show a detailed analysis of the associated model design space. Using this hybrid mode…

When people try to understand nuanced language they typically process multiple input sensor modalities to complete this cognitive task. It turns out the human brain has even a specialized neuron formation, called sagittal stratum, to help us understand sarcasm. We use this biological formation as the inspiration for designing a neural network architecture that combines predictions of different models on the same text to construct robust, accurate and computationally efficient classifiers for sentiment analysis and study several different realizations. Among them, we propose a systematic new ap…
Bayesian neural networks provide a direct and natural way to extend standard deep neural networks to support probabilistic deep learning through the use of probabilistic layers that, traditionally, encode weight (and bias) uncertainty. In particular, hybrid Bayesian neural networks utilize standard deterministic layers together with few probabilistic layers judicially positioned in the networks for uncertainty estimation. A major aspect and benefit of Bayesian inference is that priors, in principle, provide the means to encode prior knowledge for use in inference and prediction. However, it is…
The recent advent of `Internet of Things' (IOT) has increased the demand for enabling AI-based edge computing. This has necessitated the search for efficient implementations of neural networks in terms of both computations and storage. Although extreme quantization has proven to be a powerful tool to achieve significant compression over full-precision networks, it can result in significant degradation in performance. In this work, we propose extremely quantized hybrid network architectures with both binary and full-precision sections to emulate the classification performance of full-precision …
Neural Architecture Search has shown potential to automate the design of neural networks. Deep Reinforcement Learning based agents can learn complex architectural patterns, as well as explore a vast and compositional search space. On the other hand, evolutionary algorithms offer higher sample efficiency, which is critical for such a resource intensive application. In order to capture the best of both worlds, we propose a class of Evolutionary-Neural hybrid agents (Evo-NAS). We show that the Evo-NAS agent outperforms both neural and evolutionary agents when applied to architecture search for a …
Model quantization is a widely used technique to compress and accelerate deep neural network (DNN) inference, especially when deploying to edge or IoT devices with limited computation capacity and power consumption budget. The uniform bit width quantization across all the layers is usually sub-optimal and the exploration of hybrid quantization for different layers is vital for efficient deep compression. In this paper, we employ the meta learning method to automatically realize low-bit hybrid quantization of neural networks. A MetaQuantNet, together with a Quantization function, are trained to…

We describe a hybrid meta-architecture -- the CHAMELEON -- for session-based news recommendation that is able to leverage a variety of information types using Recurrent Neural Networks. We evaluated our approach on two public datasets, using a temporal evaluation protocol that simulates the dynamics of a news portal in a realistic way. Our results confirm the benefits of modeling the sequence of session clicks with RNNs and leveraging side information about users and articles, resulting in significantly higher recommendation accuracy and catalog coverage than other session-based algorithms.

The key to electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) lies in neural decoding, and its accuracy can be improved by using hybrid BCI paradigms, that is, fusing multiple paradigms. However, hybrid BCIs usually require separate processing processes for EEG signals in each paradigm, which greatly reduces the efficiency of EEG feature extraction and the generalizability of the model. Here, we propose a two-stream convolutional neural network (TSCNN) based hybrid brain-computer interface. It combines steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) and motor imagery (MI) paradigms…

Neural networks are largely black boxes. A neural network trained to classify fruit may classify a picture of a giraffe as a banana. A neural network watchdog's job is to identify such inputs, allowing a classifier to disregard such data. We investigate whether the watchdog should be separate from the neural network or symbiotically attached. We present empirical evidence that the symbiotic watchdog performs better than when the neural networks are disjoint.
