Chorus-like whistler-mode waves that are known to play a fundamental role in driving radiation-belt dynamics are excited on the Large Plasma Device by the injection of a helical electron beam into a cold plasma. The mode structure of the excited whistler wave is identified using a phase-correlation technique showing that the waves are excited through a combination of Landau resonance, cyclotron resonance and anomalous cyclotron resonance. The dominant wave mode excited through cyclotron resonance is quasi-parallel propagating, whereas wave modes excited through Landau resonance and anomalous cyclotron resonance propagate at oblique angles that are close to the resonance cone. An analysis of the linear wave growth rates captures the major observations in the experiment. The results have important implications for the generation process of whistler waves in the Earth's inner magnetosphere.
We study the wave-particle interactions between lower band chorus whistlers and an anisotropic tenuous population of relativistic electrons. We present the first direct comparison of first-principle Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations with a quasi-linear diffusion code, in this context. In the PIC approach, the waves are self-consistently generated by a temperature anisotropy instability that quickly saturates and relaxes the system towards marginal stability. We show that the quasi-linear diffusion and PIC results have significant quantitative mismatch in regions of energy/pitch angle where th…
The role of large amplitude whistler waves in the energization and scattering of solar wind electrons has long been an interesting problem in Space Physics. To study this wave-particle interaction, we developed a vectorized test particle simulation with a variational calculation of the Lyapunov exponents. From using secular perturbation theory on this Hamiltonian system of wave and particle, we confirmed that the pitch angle diffusion of the particle was along the constant Hamiltonian surface and that it was driven by the interaction with the resonance surfaces. We also showed that oblique whi…
A range of nonlinear wave structures, including Langmuir waves, unipolar electric fields and bipolar electric fields, are often observed in association with whistler-mode chorus waves in the near-Earth space. We demonstrate that the three seemingly different nonlinear wave structures originate from the same nonlinear electron trapping process by whistler-mode chorus waves. The ratio of the Landau resonant velocity to the electron thermal velocity controls the type of nonlinear wave structures that will be generated.
Simultaneous observation of characteristic 3-dimensional (3D) signatures in the electron velocity distribution function (VDF) and intense quasi-monochromatic waves by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft in the terrestrial magnetosheath are investigated. The intense wave packets are characterised and modeled analytically as quasi-parallel circularly-polarized whistler waves and applied to a test-particle simulation in view of gaining insight into the signature of the wave-particle resonances in velocity space. Both the Landau and the cyclotron resonances were evidenced in the test-pa…
The role of solar wind expansion in generating whistler waves is investigated using the EB-iPic3D code, which models solar wind expansion self-consistently within a fully kinetic semi-implicit approach. The simulation is initialized with an electron velocity distribution function modeled after Parker Solar Probe observations during its first perihelion at 0.166 au, consisting of a dense core and an anti-sunward strahl. This distribution function is initially stable with respect to kinetic instabilities. Expansion drives the solar wind into successive regimes where whistler heat flux instabilit…
Thermalization and heating of plasma flows at shocks result in unstable charged-particle distributions which generate a wide range of electromagnetic waves. These waves, in turn, can further accelerate and scatter energetic particles. Thus, the properties of the waves and their implication for wave-particle interactions are critically important for modeling energetic particle dynamics in shock environments. Whistler-mode waves, excited by the electron heat flux or a temperature anisotropy, arise naturally near shocks and foreshock transients. As a result, they can often interact with supra-the…
The transition between non resonant (Weibel-type) and resonant (whistler) instabilities is investigated numerically in plasma configurations with an ambient magnetic field of increasing amplitudes. The Vlasov-Maxwell system is solved in a configuration where the fields have three components but depend only on one coordinate and on time. The nonlinear evolution of these instabilities is shown to lead to the excitation of electromagnetic and electrostatic modes at the first few harmonics of the plasma frequency and, in the case of a large ambient magnetic field, to a long-wavelength, spatial mod…
The resonant interaction of relativistic electrons and whistler waves is an important mechanism of electron acceleration and scattering in the Earth radiation belts and other space plasma systems. For low amplitude waves, such an interaction is well described by the quasi-linear diffusion theory, whereas nonlinear resonant effects induced by high-amplitude waves are mostly investigated (analytically and numerically) using the test particle approach. In this paper, we develop a mapping technique for the description of this nonlinear resonant interaction. Using the Hamiltonian theory for resonan…
Plasma emission (PE), i.e., electromagnetic radiation at the plasma frequency and its second harmonic, is a general process occurring in both astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. The prevailing theory presents a multi-stage process attributed to the resonant coupling of beam-excited Langmuir waves with ion-acoustic waves. Here we examine another possibility of the fundamental PE induced by the resonant coupling of Z-mode and whistler (W) waves. Earlier studies have been controversial in the plausibility and significance of such process in plasmas. In this study we show that the matching condi…
We present a self-consistent Particle-in-Cell simulation of the resonant interactions between anisotropic energetic electrons and a population of whistler waves, with parameters relevant to the Earths radiation belt. By tracking PIC particles, and comparing with test-particle simulations we emphasize the importance of including nonlinear effects and time evolution in the modeling of wave-particle interactions, which are excluded in the resonant limit of quasi- linear theory routinely used in radiation belt studies. In particular we show that pitch angle diffusion is enhanced during the linear …
Effects of increasing whistler amplitude and propagation angle are studied through a variational test particle simulation and calculations of the resonance width. While high amplitude and oblique whistlers in typical 1 AU solar wind parameters are capable of forming an isotropic population without any additional processes, anomalous interactions with quasi-parallel whistlers may be essential to the process of halo formation near the Sun. High amplitude and quasi-parallel whistlers can scatter strahl electrons to low velocities (less than the wave phase velocity) to form a halo population, as l…
Magnetic holes are plasma structures that trap a large number of particles in a magnetic field that is weaker than the field in its surroundings. The unprecedented high time-resolution observations by NASA's Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission enable us to study the particle dynamics in magnetic holes in the Earth's magnetosheath in great detail. We reveal the local generation mechanism of whistler waves by a combination of Landau-resonant and cyclotron-resonant wave-particle interactions of electrons in response to the large-scale evolution of a magnetic hole. As the magnetic hole conver…
The kinetic damping mechanism of low frequency transverse perturbations propagating parallel to the magnetic field in a magnetized warm electron plasma is simulated by means of electromagnetic (EM) Vlasov simulations. The short-time-scale damping of the electron magnetohydrodynamic whistler perturbations and underlying physics of finite electron temperature effect on its real frequency are recovered rather deterministically, and analyzed. The damping arises from an interplay between a global (prevailing over entire phase-space) and the more familiar resonant-electron-specific kinetic damping m…
Rf plasma production in Whistler waves range of frequency f/fci >1 is applied on the compact helical system (CHS) in a steady state operation with low toroidal magnetic field strength, where f and fci are rf and ion cyclotron frequencies, respectively. Maximum rf power and pulse width are is170kW and 10 msec at 9MHz, respectively. The line averaged plasma density <ne> as high as 2x10^18 m-3 (He plasma) is produced in the region of toroidal magnetic field strength on magnetic axis B=100G~1.5kG and the electron temperature measured at plasma periphery is about 20eV. The wave magnetic field stren…
The electrons are an essential particle species in the solar wind. They often exhibit non-equilibrium features in their velocity distribution function. These include temperature anisotropies, tails (kurtosis), and reflectional asymmetries (skewness), which contribute a significant heat flux to the solar wind. If these non-equilibrium features are sufficiently strong, they drive kinetic micro-instabilities. We develop a semi-graphical framework based on the equations of quasi-linear theory to describe electron-driven instabilities in the solar wind. We apply our framework to resonant instabilit…
When a wave packet composed of short wavelength lower hybrid modes traveling in an homogeneous plasma region encounters an inhomogeneity, it can resonantly excite long wavelength whistler waves via a linear mechanism known as mode conversion. An enhancement of lower hybrid/whistler activity has been often observed by sounding rockets and satellites in the presence of density depletions (striations) in the upper ionosphere. We address here the process of linear mode conversion of lower hybrid to whistler waves, mediated by a density striation, using a scalar-field formalism (in the limit of col…
The influence of wave frequency variation on the anomalous cyclotron resonance $ω=ω_{Be}+kv_{\|}$ interaction (ACRI) of energetic electrons with a ducted finite amplitude whistler-mode wave propagating through the so-called transient plasma layer (TPL) in the magnetosphere or in the ionosphere is studied both analytically and numerically. The anomalous cyclotron resonance interaction takes place in the case when the whistler-mode wave amplitude $B_{W}$ is consistent with the gradient of magnetic field $\overrightarrow{B_0}$. The region of phase space occupied by anomalously interacting energet…
Transport of energetic electrons in the heliosphere is governed by resonant interaction with plasma waves, for for electrons with sub-GeV kinetic energies specifically with dispersive modes in the whistler regime. We have performed Particle in Cell simulations of kinetic turbulence with test-particle electrons. The pitch-angle diffusions coefficients of these test-particles have been analyzed and compared to an analytical model for left- and right-handed polarized wavemodes.
Employing linearized Vlasov-Maxwell system, the Weibel instability embedded in an ambient magnetic field is discussed for a semi-relativistic bi-Maxwellian distribution hoping such a scenario occurs in some relativistic environments e.g., gamma-ray burst sources and relativistic jet sources, supernovae, and galactic cosmic rays where the perpendicular temperature is much dominated over the parallel . The dispersion relations are analyzed analytically along with the graphical representation and the estimates of the growth rate are presented along with the instability threshold condition in the …
The dynamics of weakly magnetized collisionless plasmas in the presence of an imposed temperature gradient along an ambient magnetic field is explored with particle-in-cell simulations and modeling. Two thermal reservoirs at different temperatures drive an electron heat flux that destabilizes off-angle whistler-type modes. The whistlers grow to large amplitude, $δB / B_{0} \simeq 1$, and resonantly scatter the electrons, significantly reducing the heat flux. A surprise is that the resulting steady state heat flux is largely independent of the thermal gradient. The rate of thermal conduction is…
Kinetic instabilities in a dense plasma of a continuous ECR discharge in a mirror magnetic trap at the GISMO setup are studied. We experimentally define unstable regimes and corresponding plasma parameters, where the excitation of electromagnetic emission is observed, accompanied by the precipitation of energetic electrons from the magnetic trap. Comprehensive experimental study of the precipitating electron energy distribution and plasma electromagnetic emission spectra, together with theoretical estimates of the cyclotron instability increment proves that under the experimental conditions th…
In this paper, we develop a model to describe the generalized wave-particle instability in a quasi-neutral plasma. We analyze the quasi-linear diffusion equation for particles by expressing an arbitrary unstable and resonant wave mode as a Gaussian wave packet, allowing for an arbitrary direction of propagation with respect to the background magnetic field. We show that the localized energy density of the Gaussian wave packet determines the velocity-space range in which the dominant wave-particle instability and counter-acting damping contributions are effective. Moreover, we derive a relation…
In this study we consider the Hamiltonian approach for the construction of a map for a system with nonlinear resonant interaction, including phase trapping and phase bunching effects. We derive basic equations for a single resonant trajectory analysis and then generalize them into the map in the energy/pitch-angle space. The main advances of this approach are the possibility to consider effects of many resonances and to simulate the evolution of the resonant particle ensemble on long time ranges. For illustrative purposes we consider the system with resonant relativistic electrons and field-al…
A review is given for cyclotron resonant interactions in space plasmas. After giving a simple formulation for the test particle approach, illustrative examples for resonant interactions are given. It is shown that for obliquely propagating whistler waves, not only fundamental cyclotron resonance, but also other resonances, such as transit-time resonance, anomalous cyclotron resonance, higher-harmonic cyclotron resonance, and even subharmonic resonance can come into play. A few recent topics of cyclotron resonant interactions, such as electron injection in shocks, cyclotron resonant heating of …
We report a numerical investigation of three dimensional, incompressible, Hall magnetohydrodynamic turbulence with a relatively strong mean magnetic field. Using helicity decomposition and cross-bicoherence analysis, we observe that the resonant three--wave coupling is substantial among ion cyclotron and whistler waves. A detailed study of the degree of non-linearity of these two populations shows that the ion cyclotron component experiences a transition from weak to strong wave turbulence going from large to small scales, while the whistler fluctuations display a weak wave turbulence characte…
The effects of kinetic whistler-wave instabilities on the runaway-electron (RE) avalanche is investigated. With parameters from DIII-D experiments, we show that RE scattering from excited whistler waves can explain several poorly understood experimental results seen in a variety of tokamaks. We find an increase of the avalanche growth rate and threshold electric field, bringing the present model much closer to observations than previous results. The excitation of kinetic instabilities and the scattering of resonant electrons are calculated self-consistently using a quasilinear model. We also e…
Long-term simulations of energetic electron fluxes in many space plasma systems require accounting for two groups of processes with well separated time-scales: microphysics of electron resonant scattering by electromagnetic waves and electron adiabatic heating/transport by mesoscale plasma flows. Examples of such systems are Earth's radiation belts and Earth's bow shock, where ion-scale plasma injections and cross-shock electric fields determine the general electron energization, whereas electron scattering by waves relax anisotropy of electron distributions and produces small populations of h…
Understanding the thermodynamic state of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) in a galaxy cluster requires a knowledge of the plasma transport processes, especially thermal conduction. The basic physics of thermal conduction in plasmas with ICM-like conditions has yet to be elucidated, however. We use particle-in-cell simulations and analytic models to explore the dynamics of an ICM-like plasma (with small gyroradius, large mean-free-path, and strongly sub-dominant magnetic pressure) driven by the diffusive heat flux associated with thermal conduction. Lin- ear theory reveals that whistler waves …
In JT-60U, simultaneous excitation of n = 1 helical cores (HCs) and m/n = 2/1 Tearing Modes (TMs) was observed [T. Bando et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 61 115014 (2019)]. In this paper, we have investigated the excitation mechanism of n = 1 HCs with m/n = 2/1 TMs based on the experimental observations and a simple quasi-linear MHD model. In the previous study, it was reported that a "coupling" on the phase of the MHD mode is observed between n = 1 HCs and m/n = 2/1 TMs. In this study, it is found that the coupling is observed with the mode frequency from several Hz to 6 kHz. This indicat…
A comprehensive two-fluid nonlinear theory of magnetic reconnection driven at a single, tearing-stable, rational surface embedded in an H-mode tokamak plasma is presented. The surface is assumed to be resonant with one of the dominant helical harmonics of an applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP). The theory described in this paper is highly relevant to the problem of understanding the physics of RMP-induced edge localized mode (ELM) suppression in tokamak plasmas.

In more than one spatial dimension, resonant linear conversion from one wave type to another can have a more complex geometry than the familiar 'avoided crossing' of one-dimensional problems. In previous work we have shown that helical ray shapes are generic in a mathematical sense. Here we briefly describe how the local field structure can be computed.
The effect of the perturbed ion polarization current on the stability of neoclassical tearing modes is calculated using an improved, neoclassical, four-field, drift-MHD model. The calculation involves the self-consistent determination of the pressure and scalar electric potential profiles in the vicinity of the associated magnetic island chain, which allows the chain's propagation velocity to be fixed. Two regimes are considered. First, a regime in which neoclassical ion poloidal flow damping is not strong enough to enhance the magnitude of the polarization current (relative to that found in s…
The SWEAP instrument suite on Parker Solar Probe (PSP) has detected numerous proton beams associated with coherent, circularly polarized, ion-scale waves observed by PSP's FIELDS instrument suite. Measurements during PSP Encounters 4-8 revealed pronounced complex shapes in the proton velocity distribution functions (VDFs), in which the tip of the beam undergoes strong perpendicular diffusion, resulting in VDF level contours that resemble a `hammerhead.' We refer to these proton beams, with their attendant `hammerhead' features, as the ion strahl. We present an example of these observations occ…
A new class of static magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) magnetic island bifurcations is identified in rotating spherical tokamak plasmas during single- and two-fluid resistive MHD simulations. As the magnitude of an externally applied non-axisymmetric magnetic field perturbation is increased in these simulations, the internal flux surfaces that make up a sub-set of the resonant helical magnetic islands in the plasma gradually elongate and undergo heteroclinic bifurcations. The bifurcation results in the creation of a new set of hyperbolic-elliptic fixed points as predicted by the Poincaré-Birkoff fixe…
This work addresses the question of the relation between strike-point splitting and magnetic stochasticity at the edge of a poloidally diverted tokamak in the presence of externally imposed magnetic perturbations. More specifically, ad-hoc helical current sheets are introduced in order to mimic a hypothetical screening of the external resonant magnetic perturbations by the plasma. These current sheets, which suppress magnetic islands, are found to reduce the amount of splitting expected at the target, which suggests that screening effects should be observable experimentally. Multiple screening…
Energetic particle populations in nuclear fusion experiments can destabilize Alfv\' en Eigenmodes through inverse Landau damping and couplings with gap modes in the shear Alfv\' en continua. We use the reduced MHD equations to describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system, coupled with equations of density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles. We add the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects by a closure relation. We apply the model to study the Alfv\' en modes stability in Large Helical Dev…
Runaway electron distributions are strongly anisotropic in velocity space. This anisotropy is a source of free energy that may destabilize electromagnetic waves through a resonant interaction between the waves and the energetic electrons. In this work we investigate the high-frequency electromagnetic waves that are destabilized by runaway electron beams when the electric field is close to the critical field for runaway acceleration. Using a runaway electron distribution appropriate for the near-critical case we calculate the linear instability growth rate of these waves and conclude that the o…
The nature of solar wind turbulence in the dissipation range at scales much smaller than the large MHD scales remains under debate. Here a two-dimensional model based on the hybrid code abbreviated as A.I.K.E.F. is presented, which treats massive ions as particles obeying the kinetic Vlasov equation and massless electrons as a neutralizing fluid. Up to a certain wavenumber in the MHD regime, the numerical system is initialized by assuming a superposition of isotropic Alfvén waves with amplitudes that follow the empirically confirmed spectral law of Kolmogorov. Then turbulence develops and ener…
An analytic theory of edge localized mode (ELM) suppression in an H-mode tokamak plasma via the application of a static, externally generated, resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) is presented. This theory is based on the plausible hypothesis that mode penetration at the top of the pedestal is a necessary and sufficient condition for the RMP-induced suppression of ELMs. The theory also makes use of a number of key insights gained in a recent publication (Fitzpatrick R 2019). The first insight is that the response of the plasma to a particular helical component of the RMP, in the immediate vici…

Using linear Vlasov theory of plasma waves and quasi-linear theory of resonant wave-particle interaction, the dispersion relations and the electromagnetic field fluctuations of fast and Alfven waves are studied for a low-beta multi-ion plasma in the inner corona. Their probable roles in heating and accelerating the solar wind via Landau and cyclotron resonances are quantified. We assume that (1) low-frequency Alfven and fast waves have the same spectral shape and the same amplitude of power spectral density; (2) these waves eventually reach ion cyclotron frequencies due to a turbulence cascade…
Alfven Eigenmodes (AE) can be destabilized by energetic particles in neutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasmas through inverse Landau damping and couplings with gap modes in the shear Alfven continua. We describe the linear evolution of the poloidal flux and the toroidal component of the vorticity in a full 3D system using the reduced MHD equations, density and parallel velocity moments for the energetic particles as well as the geodesic acoustic wave dynamics. A closure relation adds the Landau damping and resonant destabilization effects in the model. We apply the model to study the Alfven…
