Conventional metals, in general, do not exhibit strong photoluminescence. 2H-TaSe$_2$ is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide that possesses metallic property with charge density wave characteristics. Here we show that 2H-TaSe$_2$ exhibits a surprisingly strong optical absorption and photoluminescence resulting from inter-band transitions. We use this perfect combination of electrical and optical properties in several optoelectronic applications. We show a seven-fold enhancement in the photoluminescence intensity of otherwise weakly luminescent multi-layer MoS$_2$ through non-radiative resonant energy transfer from TaSe$_2$ transition dipoles. Using a combination of scanning photocurrent and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, we also show that the hot electrons generated by light absorption in TaSe$_2$ have a rather long lifetime unlike conventional metals, making TaSe$_2$ an excellent hot electron injector. Finally, we show a vertical TaSe$_2$/MoS$_2$/graphene photodetector demonstrating a responsivity of $>10$ AW$^{-1}$ at $0.1$ MHz - one of the fastest reported photodetectors using MoS$_2$.
The bilayer heterostructures composed of an ultrathin ferromagnetic metal (FM) and a material hosting strong spin-orbit (SO) coupling are principal resource for SO torque and spin-to-charge conversion nonequilibrium effects in spintronics. We demonstrate how hybridization of wavefunctions of Co layer and a monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)---such as semiconducting MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ or metallic TaSe$_2$---can lead to dramatic transmutation of electronic and spin structure of Co within some distance away from its interface with TMD, when compared to the bulk of Co or its su…
We have observed a metal-insulator transition of a quasi-two dimensional electronic system in transition metal dichalcogenide $2H$-TaSe$_2$ caused by doping iron. The sheet resistance of $2H$-Fe$_x$TaSe$_2$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.120$) single crystals rises about $10^6$ times with the increasing of $x$ at the lowest temperature. We investigated the temperature dependence of the resistance and found a metal-insulator transition with a critical sheet resistance $11.7 \pm 5.4$ k$\rmΩ$. The critical exponent of the localization length $ν$ is estimated $0.31 \pm 0.18$. The values of the critical sheet r…
Plasmonics currently faces the problem of seemingly inevitable optical losses occurring in the metallic components that challenges the implementation of essentially any application. In this work we show that Ohmic losses are reduced in certain layered metals, such as the transition metal dichalcogenide TaS$_2$, due to an extraordinarily small density of states for scattering in the near-IR originating from their special electronic band structure. Based on this observation we propose a new class of band structure engineered van der Waals layered metals composed of hexagonal transition metal cha…
Materials composed of two dimensional layers bonded to one another through weak van der Waals interactions often exhibit strongly anisotropic behaviors and can be cleaved into very thin specimens and sometimes into monolayer crystals. Interest in such materials is driven by the study of low dimensional physics and the design of functional heterostructures. Binary compounds with the compositions MX2 and MX3 where M is a metal cation and X is a halogen anion often form such structures. Magnetism can be incorporated by choosing a transition metal with a partially filled d-shell for M, enabling fe…
The isolation of graphene and transition metal dichalcongenides has opened a veritable world to a great number of layered materials which can be exfoliated, manipulated, and stacked or combined at will. With continued explorations expanding to include other layered materials with unique attributes, it is becoming clear that no one material will fill all the post-silicon era requirements. Here we review the properties and applications of layered, quasi-one dimensional transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs) as novel materials for next generation electronics and optoelectronics. The TMTCs pres…
The discovery of graphene has spurred vigorous investigation of 2D materials, revealing a wide range of extraordinary properties and functionalities. 2D heterostructural materials have recently been fabricated by assembling isolated planes layer-by-layer in a desired sequence. Unusual properties and novel physical phenomena have been unveiled in such layered heterostructures. For example, Hofstadter's butterfly, an intriguing pattern of the energy states of Bloch electrons, was predicted several decades ago to be observable only under unfeasibly strong magnetic fields in conventional materials…
It is shown, that the monotonic part of interlayer electronic conductivity strongly decreases in high magnetic field perpendicular to the conducting layers. We consider only the coherent interlayer tunnelling, and the obtained result strongly contradicts the standard theory. This effect appears in very anisotropic layered quasi-two-dimensional metals, when the interlayer transfer integral is less than the Landau level separation.
A theory for boson-assisted tunneling via randomly distributed resonant states in a layered metals is developed. As particular examples, we consider the electron-phonon interaction and the interaction between localized and conduction electrons. The theory is applied to explain a non-monotonic variation of the out-plane resistivity with temperature observed in quasi-two-dimensional metals.
The transition between different states in manganites can be driven by various external stimuli. Controlling these transitions with light opens the possibility to investigate the microscopic path through which they evolve. We performed femtosecond (fs) transmission electron microscopy on a bi-layered manganite to study its response to ultrafast photoexcitation. We show that a photoinduced temperature jump launches a pressure wave that provokes coherent oscillations of the lattice parameters, detected via ultrafast electron diffraction. Their impact on the electronic structure are monitored via…
We provide a simple and intuitive explanation for the interlayer sliding energy landscape of metal dichalcogenides. Based on the recently introduced registry index (RI) concept, we define a purely geometrical parameter which quantifies the degree of interlayer commensurability in the layered phase of molybdenum disulphide (2HMoS2). A direct relation between the sliding energy landscape and the corresponding interlayer registry surface of 2H-MoS2 is discovered thus marking the registry index as a computationally efficient means for studying the tribology of complex nanoscale material interfaces…
Metals composed of weakly-coupled, stacked layers possess a Fermi surface that slightly varies in size along the stacking direction. This appears in de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations of the magnetisation with magnetic field as two close frequencies, corresponding to the two extremal Fermi surface cross-sectional areas. We show that, for layered materials of sufficiently high mobility, Coulomb interactions can have a dramatic effect on the form of the dHvA oscillations: there is also generically an oscillation at the small difference of the two large frequencies. We determine the size and …
We investigate the conductivity in layered metals in magnetic field in the weakly incoherent limit, when the interlayer transfer integral is smaller than the Landau level broadening due to the impurity potential, but the interlayer electron tunnelling conserves the intralayer momentum. It is shown that the impurity potential has much stronger effect in this regime, than in the quasi-2D metals in the coherent limit. The weakly incoherent regime has several new qualitative features, not found in the previous theoretical approaches. The background interlayer magnetoresistance in this regime monot…
Pt/Co/heavy metal (HM) tri-layered structures with interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are currently under intensive research for several emerging spintronic effects, such as spinorbit torque, domain wall motion, and room temperature skyrmions. HM materials are used as capping layers to generate the structural asymmetry and enhance the interfacial effects. For instance, the Pt/Co/Ta structure attracts a lot of attention as it may exhibit large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. However, the dependence of magnetic properties on different capping materials has not been systematic…
The thermal response of a Cu-Ti double-layered film is investigated after laser irradiation with ultrashort pulses (pulse duration τp=50fs, 800nm laser wavelength) in submelting conditions by including the influence of nonthermal electrons. A revised two-temperature model is employed to account for the contribution of nonthermal electron distribution while the variation of the optical properties of the material during the laser beam irradiation is also incorporated into the model. Theoretical results can provide significant insight into the physical mechanism that characterize electron dynamic…
We derive expressions for the electromagnetic Green's function for a layered system using a transfer matrix technique. The expressions we arrive at makes it possible to study symmetry properties of the Green's function, such as reciprocity symmetry, and the long-range properties of the Green's function which involves plasmon waves as well as boundary waves, also known as Norton waves. We apply the method by calculating the light scattering cross section off a chain of nanoholes in a thin Au film. The results highlight the importance of nanohole interactions mediated by surface plasmon propagat…
The angle-dependent interlayer magnetoresistance of the layered organic metal $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ is found to undergo a dramatic change from the classical conventional behavior at low magnetic fields to an anomalous one at high fields. This field-induced crossover and its dependence on the sample purity and temperature imply the existence of two parallel channels in the interlayer transport: a classical Boltzmann conductivity $σ_{c}$ and an incoherent channel $σ_{i}$. We propose a simple model for $σ_{i}$ explaining its metallic temperature dependence and low sensitivity to the inpl…
We analyze the beating behavior of the magnetic quantum oscillations in a layered metal under the conditions when the cyclotron energy $\hbar ω_c $ is comparable to the interlayer transfer energy $t$. We find that the positions of the beats in the interlayer resistance are considerably shifted from those in the magnetization oscillations, and predict that the shift is determined by the ratio $\hbar ω_c/t$. A comparative study of the Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effects in the quasi-two-dimensional organic metal $β$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$IBr$_2$ appears to be consistent with the theoretical…
For electronic and photoelectronic devices based on GeSe, an emergent two dimensional monochalcogenide with many exciting properties predicted, good electrical contacts are of great importance for achieving high device performances and exploring the intrinsic physics of GeSe. In this article, we use temperature-dependent transport measurements and thermionic emission theory to systematic investigate the contact-barrier heights between GeSe and six common electrode metals, Al, Ag, Ti, Au, Pt and Pd. These metals cover a wide range of work functions (from ~ 3.6 eV to ~ 5.7 eV). Our study indicat…
Layered systems shows anisotropic transport properties. The interlayer conductivity show a general temperature dependence for a wide class of materials. This can be understood if conduction occurs in two different channels activated at different temperatures. We show that the characteristic temperature dependence can be explained using a polaron model for the transport. The results show an intuitive interpretation in terms of coherent and incoherent quasi-particles within the layers. Further, we extract results for the magnetoresistance, thermopower, spectral function and optical conductivity …
The recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) magnetic insulator CrI$_3$ is an intriguing case for basic research and spintronic applications since it is a ferromagnet in the bulk, but an antiferromagnet in bilayer form, with its magnetic ordering amenable to external manipulations. Using first-principles quantum transport approach, we predict that injecting unpolarized charge current parallel to the interface of bilayer-CrI$_3$/monolayer-TaSe$_2$ van der Waals heterostructure will induce spin-orbit torque (SOT) and thereby driven dynamics of magnetization on the first monolayer of CrI$_3$ in d…
In ReS$_2$ a layer-independent direct band-gap of 1.5 eV implies a potential for its use in optoelectronic applications. ReS$_2$ crystallizes in the 1T$^{\prime}$-structure which leads to anisotropic physical properties and whose concomitant electronic structure might host a non-trivial topology. Here, we report an overall evaluation of the anisotropic Raman response and the transport properties of few-layered ReS$_2$ field-effect transistors. We find that ReS$_2$ exfoliated on SiO$_2$ behaves as an $n$-type semiconductor with an intrinsic carrier mobility surpassing $μ_i$ ~30 cm$^2$/Vs at $T …
Studies of angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) in the interlayer conductivity of layered metals have generally considered semi-classical electron transport. We consider a quantum correction to the semi-classical conductivity that arises from what can be described as an interlayer Cooperon. This depends on both the disorder potential within a layer and the correlations of the disorder potential between layers. We compare our results with existing experimental data on organic charge transfer salts that are not explained within the standard semi-classical transport picture. In p…
Layered singlet paired superconductors with disorder and broken time reversal symmetry are studied. The phase diagram demonstrates charge-spin separation in transport. In terms of the average intergrain transmission and the interlayer tunnelling we find quantum Hall phases with spin Hall coefficients of 0 and 2 separated by a spin metal phase. We identify a spin metal-insulator localization exponent as well as a spin conductivity exponent of ~0.9. In presence of a Zeeman term an additional phase with spin Hall coefficient of 1 appears.
The magnetic field-induced changes in the conductivity of metals are the subject of intense interest, both for revealing new phenomena and as a valuable tool for determining their Fermi surface. Here, we report a hitherto unobserved magnetoresistive effect in ultra-clean layered metals, namely a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance that is capable of overcoming their very pronounced orbital one. This effect is correlated with the inter-layer coupling disappearing for fields applied along the so-called Yamaji angles where the inter-layer coupling vanishes. Therefore, it is intrinsically asso…
