We study the electronic structure change of yttrium trihydride $\mathrm{YH_3}$ by applying a hydrostatic pressure. At zero pressure, $\mathrm{YH_3}$ has the structure with energy favored symmetry group $P\bar{3}c1$ (165). From first principle calculation, we argue that the band crossings are caused by overlapping of an electron- and hole-like bands. Besides the space inversion symmetry ($\mathcal{I}$) and the time reversal symmetry, the band structure also exhibits an approximate particle-hole symmetry. Thus, $\mathrm{YH_3}$ can be viewed as a pseudo nodal surface semimetal belongs to class BDI of the ten-fold AZ+ $\mathcal{I}$ classifications of gapless topological matter. As pressure increases, the approximate particle-hole symmetry is gradually broken and the pseudo nodal surface turns into a nodal ring belonging to the class AI with fewer non-spatial symmetries. Also, the nodal ring is shrinking in the process. At about $31$ GPa, which is higher than the reported structure phase transition pressure $21$ GPa, the nodal ring shrinks to a nodal point. When above $31$ GPa, all band crossings are gapped out and $\mathrm{YH_3}$ becomes a trivial insulator eventually.
Tungsten ditelluride WTe$_2$ is a type-II Weyl semimetal with electronic properties highly sensitive to external pressure, as demonstrated by the superconductivity emerging under pressure. Here, we study the optical conductivity of the type-II Weyl semimetal WTe$_2$ under external pressure at room temperature. With increasing pressure, a pronounced spectral weight transfer occurs from the high-energy to the low-energy interband transitions, with drastic changes in the profile of the optical conductivity spectrum indicating a high sensitivity of the electronic band structure to external pressur…
Motivated by recent experimental observation of an hydrostatic pressure induced transition from semiconductor to semimetal in black phosphorus [Chen et al. in arXiv:1504.00125], we present the first principles calculation on the pressure effect of the electronic structures of black phosphorus. It is found that the band crossover and reversal at the Z point occur around the critical pressure Pc1=1.23 Gpa, and the band inversion evolves into 4 twofold-degenerate Dirac cones around the Z point, suggesting a 3D Dirac semimetal. With further increasing pressure the Dirac cones in the Gamma-Z line m…
We investigate the pressure evolution of the anomalous Hall effect in magnetic topological semimetal Co3Sn2S2 in diamond anvil cells with pressures up to 44.9-50.9 GPa. No evident trace of structural phase transition is detected through synchrotron x-ray diffraction over the measured pressure range of 0.2-50.9 GPa. We find that the anomalous Hall resistivity and the ferromagnetism are monotonically suppressed as increasing pressure and almost vanish around 22 GPa. The anomalous Hall conductivity varies non-monotonically against pressure at low temperatures, involving competition between origin…
We performed a series of high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and resistance measurements on the Weyl semimetal NbAs. The crystal structure remains stable up to 26 GPa according to the powder XRD data. The resistance of NbAs single crystal increases monotonically with pressure at low temperature. Up to 20 GPa, no superconducting transition is observed down to 0.3 K. These results show that the Weyl semimetal phase is robust in NbAs, and applying pressure is not a good way to get a topological superconductor from a Weyl semimetal.
The recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals are new members of topological materials. Starting from them, topological superconductivity may be achieved, e.g. by carrier doping or applying pressure. Here we report high-pressure resistance and X-ray diffraction study of the three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal Cd3As2. Superconductivity with Tc ~ 2.0 K is observed at 8.5 GPa. The Tc keeps increasing to about 4.0 K at 21.3 GPa, then shows a nearly constant pressure dependence up to the highest pressure 50.9 GPa. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a structure phase transition …
Topological semimetals generally contain heavy elements. Using density-functional theoretic calculations, we predict that three dense lithium polymorphs in the pressure range 200--360 GPa display nontrivial semimetallic electronic structure. Specifically, these high-pressure phases exhibit Fermi pockets which are degenerate over a loop in $\boldsymbol{k}$-space, around which an encircling $\bm k$-space path is threaded by $\pm π$ Berry phase. Accordingly, these dense lithium phases are topological nodal loop semimetals involving a single light element.
Energy transfer from electrons to phonons is an important consideration in any Weyl or Dirac semimetal based application. In this work, we analytically calculate the cooling power of acoustic phonons, i.e. the energy relaxation rate of electrons which are interacting with acoustic phonons, for Weyl and Dirac semimetals in a variety of different situations. For cold Weyl or Dirac semimetals with the Fermi energy at the nodal points, we find the electronic temperature, $T_e$, decays in time as a power law. In the heavily doped regime, $T_e$ decays linearly in time far away from equilibrium. In a…
Single crystal and polycrystalline samples of MoP$_4$ with a black-phosphorus-derived structure have been successfully synthesized by a high-pressure technique. The polycrystalline samples show a large positive magnetoresistance and a small negative Seebeck coefficient at low temperatures, reflecting a semi-metallic nature with high-mobility electrons. Consistent with the transport properties, the band structure calculation reveals a semi-metallic state with the presence of two types of Dirac nodes slightly below the Fermi level. The Dirac node along the $Γ$-X direction normal to the phosphoru…
We demonstrate that a theoretical framework fully incorporating intra-atomic correlations and multiplet structure of the localized 4f states is required in order to capture the essential physics of rare-earth semiconductors and semimetals. We focus in particular on the rare-earth semimetal erbium arsenide (ErAs), for which effective one-electron approaches fail to provide a consistent picture of both high and low-energy electronic states. We treat the many-body states of the Er 4f shell within an atomic approximation in the framework of dynamical mean-field theory. Our results for the magnetic…
Synergic effect of electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling is an emerging topic in topological materials. Central to this rapidly developing area are the prototypes of strongly correlated heavy-fermion systems. Recently, some Ce-based compounds are proposed to host intriguing topological nature, among which the electronic properties of CeSb are still under debate. In this paper, we report a comprehensive study combining magnetic and electronic transport measurements, and electronic band structure calculations of this compound to identify its topological nature. Quantum oscillations are …
We investigated the electronic properties of epitaxially stabilized perovskite SrIrO3 and demonstrated the effective strain-control on its electronic structure. Comprehensive transport measurements showed that the strong spin-orbit coupling renders a novel semimetallic phase for the J_eff=1/2 electrons rather than an ordinary correlated metal, elucidating the nontrivial mechanism underlying the dimensionality-controlled metal-insulator transition in iridates. The electron-hole symmetry of this correlated semimetal was found to exhibit drastic variation when subject to bi-axial strain. Under co…
PbTaSe$_2$ is a unique topological material, in which the number of nodal lines is expected to change at the structural transition between the lower temperature/pressure "L" phase and the higher temperature/pressure "H" phase. We report the anomalous Nernst effect attributed to the Berry curvature of nodal lines and its change with the structural transition. In the L phase, the Nernst coefficient ($S_{yx}$) shows the step-like magnetic field dependence reminiscent of the anomalous Nernst effect of nonmagnetic Dirac/Weyl semimetals. By applying hydrostatic pressure, we discovered that the ampli…
We found that a high mobility semimetal 1T'-MoTe2 shows a significant pressure-dependent change in the cryogenic thermopower in the vicinity of the critical pressure, where the polar structural transition disappears. With the application of a high pressure of 0.75 GPa, while the resistivity becomes as low as 10 μΩcm, thermopower reached the maximum value of 60 μVK-1 at 25 K, leading to a giant thermoelectric power factor of 300 μWK-2cm-1. Based on semiquantitative analyses, the origin of this behavior is discussed in terms of inelastic electron-phonon scattering enhanced by the softening of zo…
Topological magnetic Weyl semimetals have been proposed to host controllable chiral domain walls which bear a great prospect in device applications. To exploit them in applications, it is important to have a proper way to tune and manipulate these domain walls. One possible means is through magnetoelastic coupling. The involvement of rare earth in the lately proposed $R$Al$X$ ($R$=rare earth, $X$=Si and Ge) family magnetic Weyl semimetals may provide such a platform. Here we present transport and thermodynamic properties of CeAlGe under hydrostatic pressure. We find that pressure enhances the …
A review of theoretical and experimental studies of the electronic structure, electronic and magnetic properties of various systems of Heusler alloys in the states of a half-metallic ferromagnet, a spin gapless semiconductor, and a topological semimetal is presented. These substances have unusual, highly sensitive to external influences, magnetic and electronic characteristics, which is associated with the presence of energy gaps and exotic excitations in them. The features of the behavior and evolution of the electronic structure and properties in each of these states, as well as during the t…
We studied the effect of external pressure on the optical response of the nodal-line semimetal candidate ZrSiTe by reflectivity measurements. At pressures of a few GPa, the reflectivity, optical conductivity, and loss function are strongly affected in the whole measured frequency range (200-16500 cm$^{-1}$), indicating drastic changes in the electronic band structure. The pressure-induced shift of the electronic bands affects both the intraband and interband transitions. We find anomalies in the pressure dependence of several optical parameters at the pressures $P_{c1}$$\approx$4.1 GPa and $P_…
The antiferromagnet and semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$ has recently attracted a lot of attention due to a wealth of topological phases arising from the interplay of topology and magnetism. In particular, the presence of a single pair of Weyl points is predicted for a ferromagnetic configuration of Eu spins along the $c$-axis in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. In the search for such phases, we investigate here the effects of hydrostatic pressure in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. For that, we present specific heat, transport and $μ$SR measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim\,2.5\,$GPa, combined with {\it ab initio} dens…
We report on the pressure evolution of the Fermi surface topology of the Weyl semimetal NbP, probed by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the magnetoresistance combined with ab-initio calculations of the band-structure. Although we observe a drastic effect on the amplitudes of the quantum oscillations, the frequencies only exhibit a weak pressure dependence up to 2.8 GPa. The pressure-induce variations in the oscillation frequencies are consistent with our band-structure calculations. Furthermore, we can relate the changes in the amplitudes to small modifications in the shape of the Fermi surfa…
High quality hexagon plate-like Na3Bi crystals with large (001) plane surfaces were grown from a molten Na flux. The freshly cleaved crystals were analyzed by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), allowing for the characterization of the three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal (TDS) behavior and the observation of the topological surface states. Landau levels (LL) were observed, and the energy-momentum relations exhibited a linear dispersion relationship, characteristic of the 3D TDS nature of Na3Bi. In transport measurements …
The noncentrosymmetric ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi with simultaneous space-inversion (SI) and time-reversal (TR) symmetry breaking provides a unique platform for the exploration of novel topological states. Here, by employing electrical and thermoelectrical transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), high-pressure techniques, and band calculations, we demonstrate that magnetism and pressure can serve as efficient parameters to tune the positions of Weyl nodes in CeAlSi. At ambient pressure, an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and an anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) arise in t…
TaAs as one of the experimentally discovered topological Weyl semimetal has attracted intense interests recently. The ambient TaAs has two types of Weyl nodes which are not on the same energy level. As an effective way to tune lattice parameters and electronic interactions, high pressure is becoming a significant tool to explore new materials as well as their exotic states. Therefore, it is highly interesting to investigate the behaviors of topological Weyl fermions and possible structural phase transitions in TaAs under pressure. Here, with a combination of ab initio calculations and crystal …
Most recently, Bykov and coworkers reported the successful synthesis of layered structure of BeN4. Followed by the experimental report, Bafekry and coworkers published their first-principles results on the stability, electronic, optical and elastic constants of BeN4 monolayer. In the aforementioned work, authors made numerous wrong claims and reported erroneous results.
We report on the electronic transport properties of black phosphorus and analyze them using a two-carrier model in a wide range of pressure up to 2.5 GPa. In semiconducting state at 0.29 GPa, the remarkable non-linear behavior in the Hall resistance is reasonably reproduced by assuming the coexistence of two kinds of hole with different densities and mobilities. On the other hand, two-carrier analyses of the magnetotransport properties above 1.01 GPa suggest the coexistence of high mobility electron and hole carriers that have almost the same densities, i.e., nearly compensated semimetallic na…
ZrSiS is a nodal-line semimetal, whose electronic band structure contains a diamond-shaped line of Dirac nodes. We carried out a comparative study on the optical conductivity of ZrSiS and related compounds ZrSiSe, ZrSiTe, ZrGeS, and ZrGeTe by reflectivity measurements over a broad frequency range combined with density functional theory calculations. The optical conductivity exhibits a distinct U shape, ending at a sharp peak at around 10000~cm$^{-1}$ for all studied compounds, except for ZrSiTe. The U shape of the optical conductivity is due to transitions between the linearly dispersing bands…
The application of pressure has been demonstrated to induce intriguing phase transitions in topological nodal-line semimetals. In this work we analyze how uniaxial pressure affects the topological character of BaSn2 , a Dirac nodal-line semimetal in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. Using calculations based on the density functional theory and a model tight-binding Hamiltonian, we find the emergence of a second nodal line for pressures higher than 4 GPa. We examine the topological features of both phases demonstrating that a nontrivial character is present in both of them. Thus, providing ev…
We report an experimental study of the magnetic order and electronic structure and transport of the layered pnictide EuMnSb$_2$, performed using neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and magnetotransport measurements. We find that the Eu and Mn sublattices display antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Eu} = 21(1)$ K and $T_\mathrm{N}^\mathrm{Mn} = 350(2)$ K respectively. The former can be described by an A-type AFM structure with the Eu spins aligned along the $c$ axis (an in-plane direction), whereas the latter has a C-type AFM structure w…
ZrSiS-type materials represent a large material family with unusual coexistence of topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. As a special group of ZrSiS-family, LnSbTe (Ln = Lanthanide rare earth) compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore new quantum phases due to the intrinsic magnetism induced by Ln. Here we report the single crystal growth and characterization of NdSbTe, a previously unexplored LnSbTe compound. NdSbTe has an antiferromagnetic ground state with field-driven metamagnetic transitions similar to other known LnSbTe, but exhibits distinct enhanced …

The combination of magnetic symmetries and electronic band topology provides a promising route for realizing topologically nontrivial quasiparticles, and the manipulation of magnetic structures may enable the switching between topological phases, with the potential for achieving functional physical properties. Here, we report measurements of the electrical resistivity of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ under pressure, which show an intriguing insulating dome at pressures between $p_{\rm c1}\sim1.0$~GPa and $p_{\rm c2}\sim2.0$~GPa, situated between two regimes with metallic transport. The insulating state can b…
The ZrSiS-type materials have attracted intensive attention due to the existence of various topological fermions. The magnetic version of the ZrSiS-type materials, LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanides), is an ideal candidate to explore novel exotic states due to the interaction between magnetism and topology. In this work, we report the experimental study on structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and electronic properties for SmSbxTe2-x with various Sb content. The revealed evolutions of these properties with tuning the compositions would provide useful insights for the fundamental topological physics and t…
Ab initio molecular dynamic method within the framework of density functional theory is applied to analyze the structural and electronic properties of crystalline molecular hydrogen at temperature 100\,K. Pressure, pair correlation function and band structure are calculated. The crossover of molecular crystalline hydrogen from the state of a semiconductor to a semimetallic and metallic state is observed upon compression in the pressure range of 302-626\,GPa. At pressures below 361\,GPa, the molecular crystal with the C2/c structure is a semiconductor with an indirect gap. In the pressure range…
There has been an upsurge in the discovery of topological quantum materials, where various topological insulators and semimetals have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed. However, only very few of them contains silicon, the most widely used element in electronic industry. Recently, ternary compound CaAl2Si2 has been predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal, hosting Lorentz-symmetry-violating quasiparticles with a strongly tilted conical band dispersion. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigated the compre…
In BaNiS2 a Dirac nodal-line band structure exists within a two-dimensional Ni square lattice system, in which significant electronic correlation effects are anticipated. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we discover signs of correlated-electron behavior, namely electronic nematicity appearing as a pair of C2-symmetry striped patterns in the local density-of-states at ~60 meV above the Fermi energy. In observations of quasiparticle interference, as well as identifying scattering between Dirac cones, we find that the striped patterns in real space stem from a lifting of degeneracy among elec…
In nodal-line semimetals linearly dispersing states form Dirac loops in the reciprocal space, with high degree of electron-hole symmetry and almost-vanishing density of states near the Fermi level. The result is reduced electronic screening and enhanced correlations between Dirac quasiparticles. Here we investigate the electronic structure of ZrSiSe, by combining time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) complemented by an extended Hubbard model (DFT +U +V). We show that electronic correlations are reduced on an ultrashort timescale by o…
By means of the first-principles calculations combined with the tight-binding approximation, the strain-induced semiconductor-semimetal transition in graphdiyne is discovered. It is shown that the band gap of graphdiyne increases from 0.47 eV to 1.39 eV with increasing the biaxial tensile strain, while the band gap decreases from 0.47 eV to nearly zero with increasing the uniaxial tensile strain, and Dirac cone-like electronic structures are observed. The uniaxial strain-induced changes of the electronic structures of graphdiyne come from the breaking of geometrical symmetry that lifts the deg…
We study the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetotransport properties of the zirconium pentatelluride. The magnitude of resistivity anomaly gets enhanced with increasing pressure, but the transition temperature $T^{\ast}$ is almost independent of it. In the case of H $\parallel$ $b$, the quasi-linear magnetoresistance decreases drastically from 3300$\%$ (9 T) at ambient pressure to 400$\%$ (14 T) at 2.5 GPa. Besides, the change of the quantum oscillation phase from topological nontrivial to trivial is revealed around 2 GPa. Both demonstrate that the pressure breaks the accidental Dira…
High pressure Raman spectroscopy of bulk 2H-MoTe$_2$ upto $\sim$ 29 GPa is shown to reveal two phase transitions (at $\sim$ 6 and 16.5 GPa), which are analyzed using first-principles density functional theoretical calculations. The transition at 6 GPa is marked by changes in the pressure coefficients of A$_{1g}$ and E$^{1}_{2g}$ Raman mode frequencies as well as in their relative intensity. Our calculations show that this is an isostructural semiconductor to a semimetal transition. The transition at $\sim$ 16.5 GPa is identified with the changes in linewidths of the Raman modes as well as in t…
Electronic structure properties of nanowires (NW) with diameters of 1.5 nm and 3 nm based on semimetallic $α$-Sn are investigated by employing density functional theory and perturbative $GW$ methods. We explore the dependence of electron affinity, band structure and band gap values with crystallographic orientation, NW cross-sectional size and surface passivants of varying electronegativity. We consider four chemical terminations in our study: methyl ($\rm{CH_3}$), hydrogen ($\rm{H}$), hydroxyl ($\rm{OH}$), and fluorine ($\rm{F}$). Results suggest a high degree of elasticity of Sn-Sn bonds wit…
The high pressure phase diagrams of TaAs family (NbP, NbAs, TaP and TaAs) are explored systematically using crystal structure search together with first-principles calculations. Our calculations show that NbAs and TaAs have similar phase diagrams and possess the same structural phase transition sequence of I41md $\rightarrow$ P-6m2 $\rightarrow$ P21/c $\rightarrow$ Pm-3m, with a bit different transition pressures. The phase transition sequence of NbP and TaP are somewhat different from that of NbAs and TaAs. In which new structures emerge, for instance, the Cmcm structure in NbP and the Pmmn s…
The anisotropic optical response of the layered, nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS at ambient and high pressure is investigated by frequency-dependent reflectivity measurements for the polarization along and perpendicular to the layers. The highly anisotropic optical conductivity is in very good agreement with results from density functional theory calculations and confirms the anisotropic character of ZrSiS. Whereas the in-plane optical conductivity shows only modest pressure-induced changes, we found strong effects on the out-of-plane optical conductivity spectrum of ZrSiS, with the appearance of t…
Raman scattering in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 shows an intricate interplay of electronic and phonon degrees of freedom. We observe resonant phonon scattering due to interband transitions, an anomalous anharmonicity of phonon frequency and intensity, as well as quasielastic (E~0) electronic scattering. The latter two effects are governed by a characteristic temperature scale T* ~ 100 K that is related to mutual fluctuations of lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. A refined analysis shows that this characteristic temperature corresponds to the energy of optical phonons w…
We investigate systematically the bulk and surface electronic structure of the candidate nodal-line semimetal CaAgAs by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations. We observed a metallic, linear, non-$k_z$-dispersive surface band that coincides with the high-binding-energy part of the theoretical topological surface state, proving the topological nontriviality of the system. An overall downshift of the experimental Fermi level points to a rigid-band-like $p$-doping of the samples, due possibly to Ag vacancies in the as-grown crystals.
Large-area thin films of topological Dirac semimetal Na$_3$Bi are grown on amorphous SiO$_2$:Si substrates to realise a field-effect transistor with the doped Si acting as back gate. As-grown films show charge carrier mobilities exceeding 7,000 cm$^2$/Vs and carrier densities below 3 $\times $10$^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$, comparable to the best thin-film Na$_3$Bi. An ambipolar field effect and minimum conductivity are observed, characteristic of Dirac electronic systems. The results are quantitatively understood within a model of disorder-induced charge inhomogeneity in topological Dirac semimetals. Du…
Based on first-principles calculations, we reported that external pressure can induce topological phase transition in alkaline-earth hexaborides, XB6 (X=Ca, Sr, Ba). It was revealed that XB6 is transformed from trivial semiconductors to topological node-line semimetals under moderate pressures when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored. The band inversion between B px (pz) and py orbitals at X point is responsible for the formation of node-line semimetals. Three node-line rings around X point are protected by the combination of the time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetries, and the drumhea…
We investigated the pressure evolution of the electrical transport in the almost compensated Weyl semimetal TaP. In addition, we obtained information on the modifications of the Fermi-surface topology with pressure from the analysis of pronounced Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations present in the Hall-effect and magnetoresistance data. The simultaneous analysis of the Hall and longitudinal conductivity data in a two-band model revealed an only weak decrease in the electron- and hole charge-carrier densities up to 1.2 GPa, while the mobilities are essentially pressure independent along…
Using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations we studied the low-energy electronic structure of bulk ZrTe$_2$. ARPES studies on ZrTe$_2$ demonstrate free charge carriers at the Fermi level, which is further confirmed by the DFT calculations. An equal number of hole and electron carrier density estimated from the ARPES data, points ZrTe$_2$ to a semimetal. The DFT calculations further suggest a band inversion between Te $p$ and Zr $d$ states at the $Γ$ point, hinting at the non-trivial band topology in ZrTe$_2$. Thus, our studies for th…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological semimetals represent a new class of topological matters. The study of this family of materials has been at the frontiers of condensed matter physics, and many breakthroughs have been made. Several topological semimetal phases, including Dirac semimetals (DSMs), Weyl semimetals (WSMs), nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs), and triple-point semimetals, have been theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated. The low-energy excitation around the Dirac/Weyl nodal points, nodal line, or triply degenerated nodal point can be viewed as emergent relativistic fermi…
We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetotransport properties of the Weyl semimetal NbAs. Subtle changes can be seen in the $ρ_{xx}(T)$ profiles with pressure up to 2.31 GPa. The Fermi surfaces undergo an anisotropic evolution under pressure: the extremal areas slightly increase in the $\mathbf{k_x}$-$\mathbf{k_y}$ plane, but decrease in the $\mathbf{k_z}$-$\mathbf{k_y}$($\mathbf{k_x}$) plane. The topological features of the two pockets observed at atmospheric pressure, however, remain unchanged at 2.31 GPa. No superconductivity can be seen down to 0.3 K for all the pressures…
Following the intense studies on topological insulators, significant efforts have recently been devoted to the search for gapless topological systems. These materials not only broaden the topological classification of matter but also provide a condensed matter realization of various relativistic particles and phenomena previously discussed mainly in high energy physics. Weyl semimetals host massless, chiral, low-energy excitations in the bulk electronic band structure, whereas a symmetry protected pair of Weyl fermions gives rise to massless Dirac fermions. We employed scanning tunneling micro…
Topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSMs) are materials whose conduction and valence bands cross each other, meeting a topologically-protected closed loop rather than discrete points in the Brillouin zone (BZ). The anticipated properties for TNLSMs include drumhead-like nearly flat surface states, unique Landau energy levels, special collective modes, long-range Coulomb interactions, or the possibility of realizing high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, SrAs3 has been theoretically proposed and then experimentally confirmed to be a TNLSM. Here, we report high-pressure experiments on Sr…
The three dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetal, which has been predicted theoretically, is a new electronic state of matter. It can be viewed as 3D generalization of graphene, with a unique electronic structure in which conduction and valence band energies touch each other only at isolated points in momentum space (i.e. the 3D Dirac points), and thus it cannot be classified either as a metal or a semiconductor. In contrast to graphene, the Dirac points of such a semimetal are not gapped by the spin-orbit interaction and the crossing of the linear dispersions is protected by crystal symmetry. In co…
